Thelma Carter

JACKSON -- Thelma Carter, 91, a retired VA nurse, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, of heart failure at Crawford Nursing Home in Jackson.

Services were held Monday at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Ridgeland with interment in Lakewood South cemetery in Jackson.

A Noxapater native, Ms. Carter had moved to Jackson in 1961. She was a retired Veterans Administration nurse and a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Winston County.

Survivors include her sister, Mary Frank Carter of Madison.

Ferrill D. Battley

MADISON -- Ferrill D. Battley, 85, died Feb. 22, 2000, from the effects of metastatic liver cancer in Pascagoula.

Services were held last Thursday from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland with interment in Jessamine cemetery.

Mr. Battley spent his boyhood in Ridgeland with his parents, William and Blanche Battley, and sister, Virginia Battley Adcock. He was an accounting graduate of Mississippi State University and is an honored donor to that institution.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked with the IRS, then as a public accountant and retired after a career as a municipal bond broker.

Those who knew him said he is remembered with high regard as a dedicated family man and person of the highest moral value. Family and friends said they lost a beacon of honesty and integrity.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elsa Morewood Battley of Madison; daughter, Jane Lee of Hattiesburg; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Shirley Battley and Ted and Priscilla Battley, all of Pascagoula; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also served as a mentor to his sister's children, Elise, Anita and Jeff.

Elma D. Cotten

CAMDEN -- Mrs. Elma D. Cotten, 87, a homemaker, died of heart failure Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Magnolia Hospital in Corinth.

Services were held Sunday at Camden Methodist Church with interment in Camden cemetery. Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home of Canton handled arrangements.

A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, she was a member of the Camden Baptist Church in Camden. She was the widow of J.D. Cotten.

Survivors include sons, William Brooks and Richard Brooks, both of Camden; daughter, Shirley Walker of Corinth; brother, Ambus Cauthen of Philadelphia; sisters, Louise Pigg of Carthage and Dixie Elrod, of Refugiro, Tex.as; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

P.W. "Minnie" Bozeman

MADISON -- Mrs. P.W. "Minnie" Bozeman, 78, a homemaker, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, of pulmonary fibrosis at her home in Madison.

Services were held Saturday from Madison United Methodist Church with interment in Montgomery Memorial cemetery in Madison. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland handled arrangements.

A Nesbit native, Mrs. Bozeman has lived in Florence for many years before moving to Madison 40 years ago. She was a member of Madison United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, P.W. Bozeman, in 1991.

Survivors include her daughter, Pat Skinner of Madison; foster daughter, Nancy Jennings Armstrong of Ft. Worth, Texas; son, Dudley R. Bozeman of Flora; grandchildren, Prentiss Webster Bozeman 2nd, Janice Skinner Reilly, Richard Skinner, Joy Skinner Luke, Dudley Richard Bozeman Jr., Harvey Cox Bozeman and Minnie Elizabeth Skinner; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Madison United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1696, Madison, MS 39130; or Sta-Home Hospice, 406 Briarwood Drive, Jackson, MS 39206.

Sara Rhymes Flannes

MADISON -- Sara Rhymes Flannes, 81, a homemaker, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, of heart failure at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held Saturday at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church with interment in Lakewood Memorial Park. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson handled arrangements.

A Crystal Springs native, Mrs. Flannes was raised in Monticello. She had been a longtime resident of Jackson and graduated from Millsaps College. While at Millsaps, she was an active member of Phi Mu sorority. She was an active member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Las Comaradas Social Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin P. Flannes.

Survivors include her sons, Michael Flannes of Jackson and J. Timothy Flannes of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Kathy Flannes of Rincon, Puerto Rico; sisters, Mrs. Frank Everitt of Waynesboro, Mrs. Thomas Clay of Monticello and Mrs. Louis Navarro of Jackson; brother, John Warren Rhymes of Monticello; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church, 305 North Congress Street, Jackson, MS 39201; or the American Cancer Society, 1380 Livingston Road, Jackson, MS 39212.

William L. "Lee" Eubank, Sr.

RIDGELAND -- William L. "Lee" Eubank Sr., 90, a businessman, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at his home in Ridgeland.

Services were held Friday at Tupelo Memorial Park with the Rev. Hershel Wiygul and the Rev. Brad Eubank officiating. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors of Tupelo handled arrangements.

Mr. Eubank had lived in Tupelo most of his life, being part-owner and operator of Long's Laundry and Cleaners for more than 35 years. He moved to Ridgeland slightly more than three years ago.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Chapman Men's Bible Class. Those who knew him said he was an avid hunter, fisherman and skeet shooter.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Kate Lee Eubank of Ridgeland; son, Bill Eubank, and wife, Sandra, of Madison; sisters, Bernice Blaylock and husband, Harold, of Ololona, and Florine Johnson of Dundee; brother, Jack Eubank, and wife, Luna, of Tupelo; and grandsons, Brett Eubank and wife, Denise, of St. Louis, Mo., the Rev. Brad Eubank of Baton Rouge, La., and Bryan Eubank and wife, Cyndee, of Clinton.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 854, Tupelo, MS 38802, or to a favorite charity.

Joey Lane Darby

FLORA -- Joey Lane Darby, 33, a maintenance supervisor, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, of complications of meningitis at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held last Thursday from Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Ridgeland with interment in Flora City cemetery.

A Mississippi native, Mr. Darby had moved to Madison County 31 years ago. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for Jitney Jungle stores of America and attended the South Madison Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Darby, and a sister, Darlene Darby.

Survivors include his wife, Angela Darby of Flora; sons, Allen M. Darby, Matthew Waldrop and Bryan Waldrop, all of Flora; mother, Janice Stanley of Jackson; brothers, J.D. Darby of Batesville, Steve Darby of Brighton, Tenn., Eddie Darby of Southaven, Dennis Darby of Miami, Fla., Kenneth Mason of Southaven and Randal Stanley of Jackson; sisters, Debbie Krantz of Southaven, Dianne Darby of Brighton, Tenn., Tammy Johnakin of Memphis, Tenn., and Ladonna Beam of Munford, Tenn.; and grandmother, Syble Synder of Pittsboro.

Etta Beasley

MADISON - Mrs. Etta Beasley, 101, a housewife and retired newspaper correspondent, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, of heart failure at St. Catherine's Village.

Services were held Friday from the Chapel of Wright and Ferguson in Jackson.

"Mama Beasley was a resident of Copiah County for 86 years before moving to Jackson to be closer to her family.

In August 1994, she moved to St. Catherine's Village.

She had previously worked as a correspondent for the Haslehurst Courier for 37 years. She was a member of Galilee Baptist Church in Rockport.

Family and friends said she had an extraordinary memory at 101. She loved people and was in turn shown care and love by many.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Beasley; a daughter, Bobbie Sawaya; and son, Horace Beasley.

Survivors include her daughters, Margaret Pace, Jean Bauer and Nell Vernamonti, all of Pearl, Claude Jackson of Ruleville and Ruth Farr of Edwards; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Wilma Watts of Jackson.

Hazel Coker Burns

RIDGELAND - Mrs. Hazel Coker Burns, 88, a homemaker, died of pneumonia Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at River Oaks Hospital.

Services were held Friday at First United Methodist Church of Ridgeland with interment in Lakewood Memorial Park, Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland handled the arrangements.

Pallbearers were Mack Holmes, James A. Burns, Charles Burland, Danny Holmes, Tim Dawson, Dustin Newton, Brandon Chapman and Mike Burns.

Mrs. Burns was a pioneer Jacksonian. She was a founding member of the Liberty Grove Home Demonstration Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ridgeland.

Survivors include her daughters, Delores Hammons of Lake Lorman, Peggy Burns of Ridgeland, Hazel Holmes of Canton and Carol Burland of Fair Hope, Ala.; sons, Clyde W. Burns of Cherokee, Ark., James C. Burns of Crystal Springs and Gary H. Burns of Ridgeland; sisters, Florence Prouty of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mamie Box of Houston, Texas; brother, Harry S. Corker Sr. of Flowood; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Officiating at the services were the Reverends Warren Black, John Garrott and Percy Campbell.

Robert H. 'Bobby' Jurgens

RIDGELAND - Robert H. 'Bobby' Jurgens, 77, a retired wholeale chrysanthemum grower and long-time alderman, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, of cancer at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held Jan. 29 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home with interment in Jessamine cemetery.

A native of Chicago, Ill, , Mr. Jurgens had served on the Ridgeland Board of Aldermen for 20 years, from the early 1950's through the early 1970's. Much of that time he served as mayor pro tempore of the board.

He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a member of the 489th Bomber Group. He was a member and former Commander of VFW Post No. 6473. He was a Shriner and a member of the Pearl Lodge No. 0023. He was also a member of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society and American Legion Henry H. Graves Post No. 1.

He was an Episcopalian. He had served as president of the Madison-Ridgeland Optimists Club and was remembered for heavy involvement in the 1960's with the Dixie Youth Baseball Program which operated at that time in Madison and Ridgeland.

Survivors include his daughters, Gayle McMurtrey of Jackson and Karen Knight and Lisa Jurgens, both of Ridgeland; sisters, Katherine Jurgens of Ridgeland and Doris Mae Yandell of Canton; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

John H. Brown

RIDGELAND -- John H. Brown, 85, a painter, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, of respiratory failure at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.

Services were held at Lakeover Funeral Home Chapel in Jackson Saturday with interment in New Hope Grove cemetery in Madison County.

A native of Madison County, Mr. Brown accepted Christ at an early age and joined New Hope Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

He served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.

He was educated at Wells Rosenwall School and Tougaloo College in Madison County.

He was also a member of Cornerstone Lodge No. 190, works under the jurisdiction of M.W. King Hiram Grand Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Fa___ Brown of Ridgeland; sons, Ross Brown of Jackson, Harry Wells, Tougaloo, and Melvin C. Wells, Louisville; brother, Matthew Brown, Jackson; 14 grandchildren, 15 grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Martha Rankin Schoonover

FLORA - Martha Rankin Schoonover, 64, a retired insurance representative, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, of cancer at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held Monday at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mendenhall with interment in Popular Springs cemetery in Mendenhall.

A native of Mendenhall, Mrs. Schoonover was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She resided in Flora the time of her death.

Survivors include her two sons, Mark Schoonover of Flora and Chip Schoonover of Vicksburg; one daughter, Windy T. Schoonover; three brothers, James Rankin, Troy Rankin and David Rankin, all of Mendenhall; and one sister, Bessie Moran of Mobile, Ala.
