George T. Kinard
MADISON -- George T. Kinard, 83, a retired insurance company manager and former professional football player, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, of Alzheimer's disease at Whitfield Nursing Home.
Services were held Saturday from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland with Dr. Dennis Johnsey and the Rev. John Pulley officiating and interment in Lakewood Memorial Park.
A Crystal Springs native, Mr. Kinard was a graduate of Central High School and Ole Miss. Those who knew him said he loved football, having played four years at Central and four years at Ole Miss. He then played four years as a pro with the New York Yankees Football and then Brooklyn Dodgers Football. He was a member of the M-Club and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Kinard was a longtime member of Broadmoor Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He had retired as manager of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama for Home Insurance Co.
Honorary pallbearers were Dick Miller, Arnold Hammond, Elmo Albright, J.T. Phail, Bill Barnes, Ed May, Thomas Oswald, Clint VanDever and W.T. Shepard. Pallbearers were Bill Shanks, Steve Rimmer, Frank Kinard, Stephen Rimmer, Art Payne and Bubba Shanks.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Kinard of Madison; daughter, Virginia Neal Kinard of Pensacola, Fla.; son, George Michael Kinard of Goose Creek, S.C; sister, Nora Dean Chisholm of Jackson; brother, Billy R. Kinard of Ft. Payne, Ala.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Lt. Col. Dixon Leroy Pyles
FLORENCE -- Lt. Col. Dixon Leroy Pyles, 87, an attorney, died Monday, March 20, 2000, of heart failure at St. Dominic Hospital.
Services were held last Thursday at Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Madison County with entombment in Lakewood Memorial Park. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Jackson handled arrangements.
A North Little Rock, Ark., native, Lt. Col. Pyles was graduated from Central High School in 1930 and completed his degree in history at Millsaps College in 1933. In 1939, he received his juris doctorate from Jackson School of Law. He practiced law in Jackson for 52 years and taught at the Jackson School of Law. His legal files are archived at the University of Southern Mississippi.
A World War II veteran, he was awarded with five battle stars and had command of the eagle's nest in Berchtegarten, Germany. He commanded the only unit in the Battle of the Bulge in which every man in the unit was awarded a silver star. A monument commemorating this event stands at Ft. Knox, Ky.
He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Bar Association and the Mississippi Bar Association.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Missouri Davis Pyles of Florence; sons, Dixon L. Pyles Jr. and Todd M. Pyles, both of Jackson; daughter, Courtenay Stringer of Jackson; step-sons, Robert J. Smith of Laurel and Joseph E. Smith of Boston, Mass.; step-daughter, Carolyn Tronia Sexton of Richland; four grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren.

Brandon Patterson
RIDGELAND -- Brandon Patterson, 17, a student, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson from injuries sustained in an automobile accident at Hanging Moss and Oak Forest Drive in Jackson.
Services were held Monday from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland with Dr. John Temple officiating and interment in Jessamine cemetery in Ridgeland.
A Houston, Texas, native, Mr. Patterson was raised in Ridgeland. He attended First Baptist Church of Madison.
Pallbearers were Ken Collins, Jimmy Stringer, Travis Patterson, Ryan McGehee, Chip Burns, Kenny Pilgrim, Jeff McDonald and Clifton Papizan.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Tammy Patterson.
Survivors include his parents, Scott and Regina Patterson of Ridgeland; sister, Natalie Patterson of Ridgeland; brothers, Travis and Preston Patterson, both of Ridgeland; maternal grandparents, Wyman and Belinda Tidwell of Bellville, Texas, and Bobby and Maetta Dees of Brandon; and paternal grandmother, Doris Patterson of Jackson.

Imogene Thames McNair
JACKSON -- Mrs. Imogene Thames McNair, 71, formerly of the Buford Yerger Retirement Center, a retired state employee, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, of chronic lung disease at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Services were held Sunday in Trinity Chapel Mausoleum at Parkway Memorial cemetery in Ridgeland. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
The eulogy was given by her daughter, Sharon Showalter Moore, and Charlie V. Dulany.
A Marion County native, Mrs. McNair was reared in Morgantown. She was formerly of Bay Springs but had been a resident of Jackson for 30 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She had retired from the State of Mississippi Department of Parks and Recreation.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Showalter Moore of Canton; granddaughter, Amy Jeanne Showalter of Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters, Elaine Raybon of Hattiesburg and Ercelle Scott of Jackson; step-children, Jimmy Thames of Jackson and Joan Howse of Meridian; and seven step-grandchildren.
Cleta Lavell Ray Stewart
ISOLA -- Cleta Lavell Ray Stewart, 89, a retired insurance agent, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, of heart failure at her home in Isola.
Services were held March 22 at First Baptist Church of Isola with interment in Green Crest cemetery in Belzoni. Breeland Funeral Home of Canton handled arrangements.
An Attala County native, Mrs. Stewart had lived in Drew before moving to Isola in 1945. She was a retired insurance agent having worked for William and Lord's Funeral Home for 33 years. Those who knew her said she enjoyed painting.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Isola, where she taught Sunday school.
Survivors include her son, Clarence A. Stewart of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; daughters, Arelene Stewart Walker of Isola, Charlene Stewart Kilpatrick of Belzoni and Betti Bervaldi of Key West, Fla.; sisters, Inez Ozbourne of Jackson and Zeta Mae Pollan of Lexington; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Harry W. Stout
RIDGELAND -- Mr. Harry W. Stout, 85, a retired operational engineer, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, of heart disease at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Services were held Feb. 9 in Parkway Memorial cemetery in Ridgeland with the Rev. Jerry Clark officiating. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
A Jonesborough, Tenn., native, Mr. Stout was a longtime resident of the Jackson area. He had attended Madison-Ridgeland High School and Millsaps College.
He was a deacon and charter member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and later a member of First Baptist Church of Ridgeland. He worked for 27 years with MP&L and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was a civil engineer on the construction of the Natchez Trace Parkway and an engineer in the synthetic rubber plant of Port Neches, Texas, during World War II.
Pallbearers were Kristopher Carlson, Justin Stout, Doug Baker Jr., Douglas Baker, Jim Woodyard and John Baker.
Survivors include his wife, Allie Stout of Ridgeland; son, Jerry Stout of Ridgeland; five grandchildren; sisters, Mary S. Cooper of Garland, Texas, and Flora O. Woodyard of Pine Bluff, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth R. Coup
CANTON -- Kenneth R. Coup, 83, a retiree of the U.S. Corps of Engineers, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, of cancer at his home in Canton.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Danner Funeral Home in Abilene, Kan., with the Rev. Kerry Coup officiating and interment in Prariemound cemetery in Solomon, Kan. Mark E. Seepe Funeral Home and Crematorium of Jackson handled arrangements.
A Manchester, Kan., native, Mr. Coup was the son of William and Harriet Vickers Coup. He received his formidable education in the Manchester and Hope, Kan., communities. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served from 1944 until 1947.
He was associated with the U.S. Corps of Engineers and worked on several projects such as the Sam Rayburn Reservoir in east Texas. He retired in 1970.
On May 2, 1981, he married
Hope O'Cain. The majority of their married
life was spent in Oklahoma before moving to Canton in 1991. He worshiped in the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Hope O'Cain Coup of Canton; daughters, Annis Elaine Dick of Norman, Okla., and Celia Jane Worley of Oklahoma City, Okla.; step-daughter, Jane Elizabeth Gauf of Belzoni; step-sons, Danny Joe O'Cain of Canton and Jimmy "Jim" O'Cain of Diamond Head; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mary Belle Watford Sowell Harrell
CANTON -- Mary Belle Watford Sowell Harrell, 83, a homemaker, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, of heart failure at Madison County Medical Center in Canton.
Services were held Friday at Old Madison Presbyterian Church in Canton with interment in Canton cemetery. Breeland Funeral Home of Canton handled arrangements.
A McKenzie, Ala., native, Mrs. Harrell had lived in Madison County since 1935. She was an LPN and was involved with the farming activities of her husband, Grady Sowell, until his death in 1960. She was a member of Old Madison Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her sons, Larry Sowell of Hernando, Wayman Sowell and James Leslie Sowell, both of Canton, and Jerry Dean Sowell of Shalimar, Fla.; daughter, Mary Jane Boutwell of Canton; brother, Fred Watford of Jackson; sisters, Myrtle Hartley of Evergreen, Ala., and Elma Riley of Andalusia, Ala.; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

John A. Hinders
RIDGELAND -- John A. Hinders, 54, a business owner, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, of heart failure at St. Dominic/Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Services were held Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Dayton, Ohio, with interment in Calvary cemetery there. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Jackson handled local arrangements, with Westbrook Funeral Home of Dayton handling arrangements in Ohio.
A Dayton, Ohio, native, Mr. Hinders had lived in Ridgeland for 14 years. He was to be married
to his fiance, Judy Goolsby of Brandon, in April. He owned and operated McDonald's restaurants in Brandon and Flowood.
Survivors include his mother, Thelma Hinders; brother, Jim Hinders; and sisters, Joan Reinhard, Judy Reynolds, Joyce Stamps, Jennifer Peterson and Jane Olsen, all of Dayton, Ohio.
Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.
Zelda Byrd Winstead
JACKSON -- Mrs. Zelda Byrd Winstead, 73, a homemaker, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, of heart failure at Whispering Pines Hospice in Jackson.
Services were held Feb. 10 at Natchez Trace cemetery in Madison. Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home of Ridgeland handled arrangements.
A Bluefield, W. Va., native, Mrs. Winstead moved to Jackson in 1946. She was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and of the Eastern Star. She also taught cosmetology.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ted Winstead, who died in 1997.
Survivors include her son, R.M. "Bobby" Winstead of Jackson; daughters, Sandra W. Goodson of Florence and Patricia W. Thornton of Madison; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Don E. Carpenter
MADISON -- Dr. Don E. Carpenter, 44, a neurologist, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, from drowning at his home in Madison.
Services were held Saturday at First Baptist Church of McComb with the Rev. Frank Pollard officiating and interment in Hollywood cemetery in McComb. Hartman Funeral Home of McComb handled arrangements.
A Hattiesburg native, Dr. Carpenter was a member of First Baptist Church of Jackson. He was also a member of the Easter Seal Society, Better Business Bureau and Mississippi Neurological Society.
Pallbearers were Joe Brabham, Jack Brabham, Mack Brabham, Billy Smith, Rick Day and David Penton.
Survivors include his parents, Elton I. and Zula Day Carpenter of Brookhaven; special friend, Diane Taylor of Madison; and numerous cousins.
