Ronnie Scruggs
Ronnie Scruggs, 72, of Independence, Miss., passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at his home.
He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and was a retired dairy farmer for over 40 years.
He was a founding member and volunteer caretaker of Independence Community Center and was instrumental in starting youth baseball and softball teams in the Independence community, where he coached for many years.
He adored his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Poo Poo”. He will be remembered as a loving son, husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Scruggs is survived by his wife of 54 years, Frances Dhority Scruggs of Independence; one daughter, Gail Alexander (Richard) and one son, Brad Scruggs, all of Independence; his mother, Vera Embrey Scruggs, of Senatobia; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Scruggs and his father, Russell Morgan Scruggs.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 16, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Independence. Visitation was from 1-2 p.m. at the church, preceding the funeral service. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery.

Eddie B. Woods
Eddie B. Woods, 67, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Coldwater, passed away on January 8, 2015. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 17 at 1 p.m. at Thyatira Life Center in Senatobia.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Woods; daughters, Felicia Woods and Angela Jackson both of Senatobia; sons, Alonzo Harris, Reginald Woods and Clarence Freeman, all of Chicago, Ill.; sisters, Lizzie Pelp and Ann Woods of Chicago, Ill., Shelia Woods and Izella Malone, of Senatobia; brothers, Ezell Woods of Chicago, Ill., Warren Woods of Memphis, Tenn., University Woods and Anthony Woods both of Coldwater; 12 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Lillie Bell Boyd
Lillie Bell Boyd, 84, of Coldwater, Miss., passed away on January 2, 2015. Funeral services were held at New Independence MB Church in Coldwater on Saturday, January 10 at 12 noon. Burial followed in New Garden Church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, John Boyd of Coldwater; three daughters, Lucy Smith of Farmington Hills, Mich., Bobbie Boyd of Livonia, Mich., and Sharon Boyd of Coldwater; two sons, John Boyd Jr. of Detroit, Mich. and Aaron Boyd of Coldwater; grandson, Eric Boyd of Coldwater; six sisters, Willie Mae Frazier of Memphis, Tenn., Hazeltean Hicks of Memphis, Tenn., Jessie Tanksley of Novi, Mich., Josie Moore of Nashville, Tenn., Versie Barber of Detroit, Mich. and Babie Eason of Frazier, Tenn.; one brother, Eddie B. Reed of Coldwater; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.

John Samuel Dickson
John Samuel “Sam” Dickson, 61, of Senatobia, Miss., passed away peacefully on January 5, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett, Tenn.
He was a loving son, father, brother, and uncle. He enjoyed playing cards, swimming, fishing, and cheering for Mississippi State.
He was preceded in death by his parents Nolan and Sarah Dickson and sisters, Sally D. Simmons and Alicia D. Goodnight.
He is survived by his daughter, Erin Dickson of Carbondale, Ill.; sisters, Margaret D. Leggett of Memphis, Tenn., and Ann D. Newman of Sardis; brothers, Stuart Dickson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jimmy Dickson of Sardis, Will Dickson of Memphis, Tenn., and Tom Dickson of Senatobia.
He was a member of Coldwater Church of Christ.
Memorials may be sent to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Services were held Thursday, January 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial followed in Bethesda cemetery.
Thurman Lee Farmer
Thurman Lee Farmer, 59, of Senatobia, Miss., passed away on January 3, 2015. Funeral services were held at Paradise MB Church in Senatobia on Saturday, January 10 at 12 noon. Interment followed in Senatobia Memorial cemetery.
He is survived by a daughter, Takendra Banks-Culp of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Diane A. Todd and Deborh Walton both of Senatobia; a brother, Joe Lee Allen Jr. of Senatobia; and one grandchild.

Joe Eddie Johnson
Joe Eddie Johnson, 71, of Hickory Flat, Miss., formerly of Coldwater, died on December 20, 2014. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 10 at 2:30 p.m.
He is survived by two daughters, Lakeitcha Johnson of Hickory Flat and Chorlete Bassett of Forrest City, Ark.; a son, Kent Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Walker Lewis
Mary Elizabeth Walker Lewis died peacefully at home with her family on January 7, 2015 in Senatobia, Miss., at the age of 95.
Mary was born
on September 21, 1919 in Independence, to the late Caswell C. Walker and Willie Ruth Crenshaw. She attended school at Independence where she met her husband, Morris C. Lewis. They were married
on November 1, 1936. He joined the U.S. Army in January, 1940. After serving in World War II he began pilot training. He was killed in a plane crash, May 3, 1949.
Mary moved back to Tate County in May, 1949 to live. She opened a nursery for the children of working mothers.
In 1957, she began teaching four and five year olds at First Baptist Church where she was a member, in Senatobia. It was a position she would hold for 25 years. She taught the children the golden rule, to do unto others as they would have others do unto them she said. She tried to teach them how to get along with others, to share, and to take turns.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Caroline Brownlee, her great grandson, Jason Lewis, two sisters, Ruth Evelyn Ferguson Wallace and Dimple Williams; three brothers, Harry, Caswell and Bob Walker.
She is survived by her sister, Ruby Gay Ferguson (Maise), her daughter, Nancey Dodson (Bill) and three sons, Morris C. Jr. (Linda), Eddie (Judy) and Aaron (Ruby); 10 grandchildren, Cindy Martin (Tim), Susan Ellison (Dale), Jeff Brownlee (Christine) John Brownlee (Allison), Jared Brownlee (Roseanne), Monica Redman (Eric), Stephanie Hauser (Sean), Angela Weeks (Mickey), Christy Dye (Chris), Brian Lewis (Gail); 27 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Pallbearers for the service are Jeff Brownlee, Jared Brownlee, John Brownlee, Brian Lewis, Caleb Ellison, Hunter Martin, Nolan Weeks, Lance Dye and Ethan Lewis.
Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, Senatobia or to the Mary Elizabeth Walker Lewis Endowment Scholarship at Northwest Mississippi Community College, Senatobia, MS.

Services were held Sunday, January 11, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Senatobia. Burial followed in Mt. Zion cemetery in Independence, MS.

Loyd “Kelly” McNeal
Loyd “Kelly” McNeal, 63, welder, died on January 3, 2015. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Independence-Tyro M.B. Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Tokeytha Wooten of Senatobia and Tamara McNeal of Olive Branch; two sons, Terrian McNeal of Collierville, Tenn. and Deshaun McNeal of Oxford; eight sisters, Effie Mae Jackson, Dorothy Faulkner, Varrie Richmond, Gwen Dowl, Alice Jackson and Donnie McNeal, all of Senatobia, LM Green of Chicago, Ill. and Carolyn Todd of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Huce McNeal Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.

Magnolia B. Avent
Magnolia B. Avent, 79, homemaker, of Como, Miss., passed away on December 1, 2014. Funeral services were held at Ebenezer M.B. Church in Como on Saturday, December 6 at 12 noon. Burial followed at Ebenezer M.B. Church cemetery in Como.
She is survived by two daughters, Bernestine Hibbler of Senatobia and Lueida Freeman of Horn Lake; a son, Jeral Avent of Como; two sisters, Idaline Carpenter of Memphis, Tenn. and AT Malone of Horn Lake; nine grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Hilton Bowen
Hilton Bowen, 75, of Coldwater, Miss., passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014. He was a retired pressman for Qubecore Printing.
Mr. Bowen is survived by his wife, Victoria Bowen; daughter, Angie Harrison; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, December 4, at 2:00 p.m. at Arkabutla Baptist Church. Burial followed in Surrette cemetery.

G. S. Brassfield
Mr. G.S. “Red” Brassfield, 75, of Coldwater, Miss., passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Mr. Brassfield was born
in New Albany, Miss. on February 27, 1939, to the late Minnie Rakestraw Brassfield and Ernest J. Brassfield.
He was a retired elevator constructor and was a member of Bett Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. In his own words, Red described himself as a “Blessed man, ” and when asked how he was doing, would always reply “I’m better than I deserve.” He was strong in his faith and in his beliefs and will be missed by his loving family and many friends.
Mr. Brassfield is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Holt Brassfield; two daughters, Donna Brassfield Gates (Howard) and Gaye A. Brassfield; one son, Terry Lee Brassfield (Jinna), all of Independence; two sisters, Mary Todd and Hazel Smith, both of Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was held for Mr. Brassfield on Sunday, December 7, at 3 p.m. in Bett Baptist Church. Bro. Alvin Whitehead officiated. Visitation was held in the church on Sunday from 1-3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bett Baptist Church Building Fund.
