Gayle McCormick Smith, 64, of Bruce, died Monday, October 6, 2008 at her home. She was born
February 2, 1944 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Buford Shaw “Boots” and Mildred Irene Simpson McCormick. She was a retired assistant teacher at Bruce Elementary School, and was a member of Mt. Comfort Baptist Church, and Gideons Auxiliary.
James Robert Sims
James Robert Sims, 66, of Nesbit, retired educator for 42 years, died October 4, 2008. Mr. Sims began his career at Horn Lake High School where he served as an English teacher, guidance counselor, and Assistant Principal. He was principal at Southaven Elementary School and Southaven High School. He served as Director of Curriculum for Desoto County Schools. He retired as principal of Hernando Middle School. He was active in Habitat for Humanity and North Mississippi Mental Health Commission.
Larry Silas
Larry Silas died July 19, 2008. He was born
July 18, 1953, the son of Frank Silas Jr. and Virgie Silas. He was a member of Zion Springs Church. Rev. Tommie Goodwin officiated at the funeral service. Pallbearers were Bernard Harper, Anthony Harper, Phillip Jackson, Steve Wilson, Tommy Bean, Tom Earl Jones and Maurnico Pearson. Honorary pallbearers were Reginald Welch, Bobby Gaston, Jerome Glaspie, Steve Wilson and Rufus Jameson Jr.
Loretta McGonagill
Loretta Jan McGonagill, 41, of Columbus, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2008 at her residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 6, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Sammy Crawford, officiating, and Bro. Kenny Johnson and Rev. Danny Spratlin. Interment was in New El Bethel Baptist Church cemetery, Lafayette County.

Thomas Darrell Parks, 33, died September 19, 2008 at Greenwood General Hospital in Greenwood. He was born
August 25, 1978. Burial was in Clear Springs cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Chris Campbell, Benard Harper, Andre Anderson, Rico Zinn, Marc Harper, Sean Bobo, Joseph Jackson and Maurnico Pearson.

July 6, 1976 in Dallas, Tx. He was a graduate of Grenada High School.

February 10, 1933 in Jacksboro, Tx., the daughter of Farris Pounds and Hazel Gillam.

October 28, 1946 in Bruce, the daughter of Lucious H. and Martha Bess Shields Camp. She was a member of Sardis Lake Baptist Church, Pilot Club of Grenada and Batesville Homemakers’ Club. She was a restaurant owner/manager.

Nona W. Freeman, 90, of Sarepta, died Monday, December 8, 2008 at Calhoun Health Services Nursing Home in Calhoun City. She was born
April 20, 1918 in Buckhorn community, the daughter of Marshall and Lucy Austin Wilson. She was a homemaker and member of Sarepta Baptist Church.

December 10, 1957 in Greenville. She was a homemaker and previously worked at North Ms. Regional Center in Oxford. She was a graduate of Bruce High School and MUW in Columbus, and was a member of Bruce United Methodist Church.

Mary Finnell Denton Mallory, 76, of Calhoun City, died Sunday, December 7, 2008 at her home. She was born
October 2, 1932 in Dentontown community of Calhoun County, the daughter of Claude L. and Susie Louise Dorroh Denton. She was a retired employee of the Department of Human Services, and was a member of Sabougla Baptist Church.

Clares L. “Bill” James, 89, of Bruce, died Friday, December 5, 2008 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born
February 3, 1919 in Calhoun County, the son of Robert Wash and Eva Bennett James. He was retired from Memphis Hardwood as a boiler operator and was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

August 13, 1924 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Earl and Jettie Tutor Murphree. She was a homemaker and member of Bruce Church of Christ.

Johnny “Whop” Wayne Woffard, 54, died Wed-nesday, November 26, 2008 in Pittsboro. His funeral service was Friday at 1 p.m. at Belle Memorial Chapel in Bruce with Pastor Ishmel Campbell officiating. Burial was in Midway cemetery in Vardaman.

November 6, 1919 in Alabama, the daughter of Virgil Estes and Irene Owen Morgan. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Calhoun City and was the retired owner of Kimzey Furniture.

Phil Hayden Ray, 68, of Houston, Tx. and formerly of Calhoun City, died Friday, November 28, 2008 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He was born
August 13, 1940, the son of Jim Tom and Jimmie Lee Wilson Ray. He was a piping designer for a mechanical design firm, was a member of National Guard, Veteran, and he was a Baptist.
Rick Logan
John (Rick) Logan, 73, passed away April 6, 2008 in Munford, TN. His funeral service was in Forest Hill Funeral Home. He was originally from Memphis and grew up next to Elvis Presley and his parents. Their parents were close friends, and John and Elvis were in the same high school graduating class. He was also a classmate of his wife of 56 years, Juanita. His other survivors include their three children and six grandchildren. Logan’s cousin, Miriam Brower Sneed, formerly of Calhoun City, enjoyed many visits at his home with him, her aunt and uncle, and Elvis.

June 23, 1925 in Leflore County, the son of John B. and Mary C. Bailey. He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church, and he was a farmer.

Ruthell Hardin Skiles, 88, of Ponchatoula, La., died Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at her home. She was born
July 27, 1920, the daughter of Henry Hartwell and Susie Rhodes Hardin. She was a retired bookkeeper for Howard Clinic, and was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Slidell, La., and member of Eastern Star.
B.J. Shaw Clements
B.J. Shaw Clements, 80, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital - DeSoto. Formerly of Como he was born
in Slate Springs and grew up in Bruce. He served in the U.S. Navy as radarman aboard the U.S.S.?Juneau during which time he was called to the Baptist ministry. He was ordained February 10, 1957 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Senatobia. He served as pastor of Union Baptist Church, Pilgrim’s Rest Baptist Church and Sylva Rena Baptist Church.

November 26, 1947 in Calhoun City. She was a bookkeeper for Cannon Motor Co. in Calhoun City. She was a member of College Hill Baptist Church where she played the piano for many years. She loved to sing.

Elsie Cook Parker, 85, died Monday, April 20, 2009 at her residence in Bruce. She was born
in Chickasaw County to Vass and Ella Cook. She was a member of West Grove M.B. Church in Houlka, where she served on the Home Committee. She loved to cook, watch TV, listen to gospel music, and eat fish and watermelon. She was the widow of Willie Parker.

February 15, 1933 in Bruce, the son of James Albert and Mamie Doris Bray Sanders. He was a truck driver and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

May 5, 1919, the son of W.L. and Jennie Adams Bevill. He was a retired employee of Pennaco, and was a member of Reedy’s Chapel Baptist Church. A WWII?Army Veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post 50 and V.F.W.

November 14, 1920 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Earnest Carroll and Elizabeth White. She was a homemaker and former employee of Garan, Inc. textile factory in Lambert. She was a member of Heighland Baptist Church in Senatobia.

August 20, 1942 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Howard and Vivian McKelroy Taylor. A homemaker, she was a member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, and was a volunteer for American Red Cross. She loved to play Bridge.
