Nelson, Edgar "Buddy"
Edgar "Buddy" Nelson, 59, of Batesville, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, Baptist Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford.

Services were Saturday at C.O. Pate Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial is at Longtown cemetery in Longtown. C.O. Pate Funeral Home had charge.

Nelson was a carpenter.

Survivors include his wife Yvonne Nelson of Batesville; three daughters, Sherry Morrow of Hernando, Charlotte Weniger of Batesville and Shelia Lee of Courtland; three sisters, Jeanette Taylor of Batesville, Sue Pittman of Charleston and Renee Brewer of Batesville; one brother Donald Nelson of Batesville and five grandchildren.

Nelson, Margaret Schultz
Margaret Schultz Nelson, 86, of Sardis, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Thursday at Dickins Chapel. Burial was at Batesville-Magnolia cemetery. Rev. Don Bishop and Rev. Martin Case officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Nelson, born icon Feb. 11, 1917, to the late James Ivy Schultz and the late Lottie Mae George Schultz, was a homemaker, a member of The First United Methodist Church, a member of The Homemaker's Club, a Girl Scout Leader and also taught Sunday School at The First United Methodist Church for many years.

Survivors include one daughter Rebecca "Becky" Irvine of Denison, Iowa; two sisters, Elsye Johnson and Virginia Humphreys, both of Memphis and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 797, Batesville, Miss. 38606.

Newman, Mary Alice Tapper
Mary Alice Tapper Newman, 68, of Southaven died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at her residence in Southaven of pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services are Thursday, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Southaven and at 1 p.m. at Chapel Hill Methodist Church in Pope. Visitation is Wednesday at First Baptist is Southaven from 4-9 p.m. Burial will be in Chapel Hill cemetery in Pope. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Newman, born icon April 13, 1935, to the late Grafton O. and Mary Cosby Tapper, was a retired administrative assistant for National Linen Service, a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Southaven.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, William A. Tapper, Dacey D. Tapper and Acey L. Tapper and one sister Emmie Kathryn Crouch.

Survivors include her husband Oscar Vernon "Sonny" Newman of Southaven; two sons, Rusty E. Newman of Germantown, Tenn. and Randall A. Newman of Southaven and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be sent to Chapel Hill cemetery Fund c/o Union Planters Bank, Pope, or First Baptist Church Building Fund in Southaven.

Newton, Connie Pinion
Connie Pinion Newton, 32, of Clarksdale, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Services are Wednesday at 11 a.m. at National Funeral Chapel. Visitation is today from 6-8 p.m. Burial is at Forrest Hill Memorial cemetery. Rev. Bill Tidwell and Rev. Phillip Tidwell will officiate. National Funeral Home has charge.

Newton, born icon Oct. 30, 1970, to Billy Fred and Bonnie Pinion of Clarksdale, graduated from Coahoma County High School in 1998, a graduate of Mississippi Delta Jr. College where she was a drum majorette and a member of Gateway Baptist Church-Lu-Rand.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents Marilyn Marteen and J.W. Willis Jr. and Dave and Elsie Pinion.

Survivors include her parents, Billy Fred and Bonnie Pinion of Clarksdale; one daughter Marley Marteen Newton of Clarksdale; one brother B. Freddie Pinion Jr. of Oxford and her fiancé Keith Johnson of Inverness.

Memorials may be sent to Gateway Baptist Church-Lu-Rand.

Nickles, Haddie Pauline "Polly"
Haddie Pauline "Polly" Nickles, 84, of Sardis, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Gulfport Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.

Graveside services are today at 11 a.m. at Batesville Magnolia cemetery. Burial is at Batesville Magnolia cemetery. Moore Funeral Home has charge.

Nickles, born icon Nov. 30, 1918, to the late David Newt Hardin and the late Gladys McMinn Hardin, was a member of Peach Creek Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas D. "Nick" Nickles.

Survivors include three sons, Forrest H. Pope of Calhoun, David Nickles of Diamondhead and Steve Nickles of Southaven; three sisters, Jo Harpole of Gulfport, Ro Paslay of Dallas and Fay Getzinger of Kansas City, Kansas and three grandchildren.

Nichols, Veribie L.
Veribie L. Nichols, 80, of Batesville, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville.

Services will be Tuesday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Batesville at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Springhill ASA cemetery in Courtland. Cooley's Mortuary, Inc. has charge.

Nichols, born icon June 15, 1922, to the late Elbert Thomas and the late Lottie Lee McFarling, was a retired daycare worker and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include one sister, Lugene Hill of Batesville; two brothers, Izear Thomas of Batesville and Willie C. Sergent of Harvey, Ill.

Nolan, Hepsy Pate
Hepsy Pate Nolan, 97, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare in Batesville of heart failure.

Services were Monday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Magnolia cemetery in Batesville. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Nolan, born icon Dec. 11, 1905, to James W. Pate and Lillie Clark Pate of Houston, Miss., was a homemaker and a member of the Locke Station Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Douglas W. Nolan of Tunica; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Norwood, Bertha C.
Bertha C. Norwood, 91, of Batesville, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare of heart failure.

Services were Sunday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Norwood, born icon April 9, 1912, to the late Lewis and the late Ruth Mae Dees Anderson, was a homemaker and a member of Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter Julia N. Harris of Sikeston, Mo.; one son Earl T. Norwood of Cordova, Tenn.; one sister Elsie Anderson Johnson of Henderson, Tenn.; one brother Jimmy Anderson of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Oliver, Bernice
Bernice Oliver, 73, of Batesville, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Viney Creek M.B. Church in Sardis. Rev. Ozine Thomas officiated the services. Interment was held at Viney Creek cemetery. Cooley's Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Oliver, born icon March 29, 1929, to the late Lynn Fondren and the late Annie Mae Speed, was a retired laborer and a member of Viney Creek M.B. Church in Sardis. She was a missionary and a choir member.

Survivors include four sisters, Gladys Branch of Memphis, Tenn., Lenrene Thomas and Hazel Speed, both of Gary, Ind., and Betty Washington of Oklahoma, Neb.; five brothers, Elbert Fondren and Erby Fondren, both of Memphis, Tenn., Clarence Fondren of Chicago, Ill., Albert Fondren of Gary and Robert Fondren of Chicago.

Overall, Helene Marie
Helene Overall, 80, died Jan. 26, 2003, at Senatobia Convalescent Center of heart failure.

Services were at Moore Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Longtown cemetery in Crenshaw. Rev. John Parker officiated.

Overall, born icon March 16, 1922, to the late James A. Jones and Mullie Pittman Jones, was a homemaker and member of Sledge Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Juanita Goodwin of Crenshaw, Shirley A. Lantrip of Sardis, Linda Carpenter of Nesbitt and Joyce Elaine Carlisle of Strayhorn; two sons, John W. Overall of Southhaven and Billy E. Overall of Sledge; one sister, Agnes Taber of Abbeville; one brother, David Jones of Pleasant Grove. She was preceded in death by one son William Clyde Overall. She also leaves 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Owens, David A.
David A. Owens, 47, of Oxford, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Services were at South Hopewell MB Church in Coldwater. Burial followed in Browning cemetery in Oxford. Henderson Funeral Home in Sardis was in charge.

Owens was born icon Oct. 25, 1955, to Andrew Owens and Marie Booker.

Survivors include one daughter, Raven Harris of Oxford; two sons, Rodney Cook of Jackson and Jeremy Cook of Oxford; and one brother, Harold J. Owens of South Carolina.

Norwood, Jake Edward
Jake Edward Norwood, 73, of Oxford died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford.

Funeral services are today at Waller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford at 11 a.m. Burial is at Tula cemetery in Oxford. Rev. Damon Plummer will officiate. Waller Funeral Home has charge.

Survivors include his wife Martha Ella Norwood of Oxford; four daughters, Reba Hamblin of Courtland, Sherry Crossnoe of Cleveland, Donna Mason of Oxford and Janet Norwood of Enid; five sons, Mitchell Raines of Batesville, Wayne Norwood of Marked Tree, Ark., Jerry Raines of Oxford, Jake Norwood, Jr., of Pope and Joe Glenn Raines of Woodville; two sisters, Helen Cox of McComb and Mary Jane Norwood of Pennsylvania; one brother Ronnie Norwood of Greenville; 13 grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
