Lester Adams, 54, of Water Valley died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1, at 2 p.m. at Springhill North M.B. Church in Water Valley. Rev. Preston Gleaton officiated the service. Interment was in Pleasant Green M.B. Church cemetery in Water Valley. Nicholson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Adams, son of Cleala Adams of Water Valley and the late George Washington Adams, was born icon July 6, 1947 in Yalobusha County.

He was disabled and a member of Pleasant Green M.B. Church.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include four daughters Velisha Adams, Debbie Adams, Tammy Adams and Stephanie Adams, all of Water Valley; three sons James Adams and Casey Adams, both of Water Valley and David Phillips of Grand Rapid, Michigan; two sisters Mildred Judson of Water Valley and Minnie Douglass of Chicago; one brother George W. Adams of Rock Island, Illinois; and five grandchildren.

Adams, Lois
Lois Adams, 75, of Clarksdale, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Beverly Health Care in Batesville, of cancer.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. at National Funeral Chapel in Clarksdale. Bro. Robert Rawson and Bro. Michael Bates officiated the service. Burial was in Memorial Gardens cemetery. National Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Adams was born icon July 18, 1926, in Belmont. She was a store clerk for William's Drug Store and Haggard Drug Store, and a member of Batesville Church of Christ. She was the widow of the late Floyd M. "Red" Adams.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Foster of Batesville; a son, Mike Adams of Amory; a sister, Mildred Flint of San Diego, California; a step-sister, Etta Lester of Jonesboro, Arkansas; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Allen, Effie Bell
Effie Bell Allen, 89, of Oxford, died Sunday, August 25, 2002, at her home of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 27, at 2 p.m. at Dickins Chapel. Rev. Bryan Bailey officiated the service. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Dickins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Allen, daughter of the late John E. and Anne B. Bradford Taylor, was born icon April 6, 1913, in Panola County. She was a housewife and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oxford. She was the widow of the late Lawrence P. Allen.

Survivors include three sons, Lawrence E. Allen of Memphis, Tennessee, Bobby Allen of Jackson and John Allen of Courtland; two daughters, Betty Conner of Oxford and Lorene Knight of Madison; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Alred, Barbara Lynn
Barbara Lynn Alred, 26, of Courtland, died Sunday, September 15, 2002, at The Med in Memphis, Tennessee, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 18, at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. E. K. Gordon officiated the service. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Alred, daughter of Junior and Sue Darby Alred of Courtland, was born icon October 7, 1975, in Batesville to Robert Lee and Sue Darby Alred. She was a waitress at Country Catfish in Oakland and a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Survivors, other than her parents, include a son, Clayton Niles Harget of Courtland; three sisters, Tammy Lynn Alred Blakely and Nancy N. Alred Pitcock, both of Batesville, and Tina Marie Alred Redwine of Pope; three brothers, Thomas Reed Alred and Bobby Wayne Alred, both of Batesville, and Cory Lee Alred of Sardis; and grandparents, A.D. Darby and Elvin Alred, Sr., both of Batesville.

Allen, James Earl
James Earl Allen, 45, of Como, died Sunday, August 11, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital - DeSoto in Southaven of heart failure.

Graveside services were held Thursday, August 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Cold Springs cemetery in Batesville. Hal Johnson of Sardis Church of Christ, officiated the service. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Allen, son of J.C. Allen and Laverne Perkins Allen, both of Como, was born icon January 18, 1957, in Panola County. He was a shipping clerk for Barnes and Noble and a member of Harmontown Baptist Church.

Survivors, other than his parents, include two daughters, Amber Harris of Dyersburg, Tennessee, and Jessica Allen of Senatobia; a son, Carson Harris of Washington, Missouri; four sisters, Veneda Ruby of Como, Pat Stokes of Charleston, Kathy Carson of Millington, Tennessee, and Mary Webb of Mid City, Oklahoma; two brothers, David Rhymes of Millington, and Lynn Rhymes of Waterford; and one grandchild.

Alvanos, Charles Marion
Charles Marion Alvanos, 50, of Sardis, died Thursday, May 30, 2002.

There were no funeral services. The family greeted friends, Saturday, June 1, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home.

Alvanos, son of the late Pondo and Dorothy Carpenter Alvanos, was born icon January 3, 1952, in Aiken, South Carolina. He was a radio technician for Integrated Communications.

Survivors include a son, Nicholas Alvanos of Belveldere, South Carolina; a sister, Ponda Caldwell of Inman, South Carolina; and a companion, Diane Beasley of Sardis.

Anderson, Velma Lucille
Velma Lucille Anderson, 73, of Ackerman, died Monday, April 29, 2002, in Eupora of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 1, a 2 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Roger Miller officiated the service. Burial was in Blythe Creek cemetery. Welch Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Anderson was born icon in Choctaw County. She was a homemaker and a member of Blythe Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Cleve "Hap" Anderson and Robert "Bud" Anderson, both of Ackerman; a brother, William Fondren of Atlantic, Virginia; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Anderson, Vera
Vera Anderson, 86, of Sardis, died Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at Sardis Community Nursing Home of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 8, at 11 AM at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jerry Sanford officiated the service. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery in Sardis. Moore Funeral Home Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Anderson, daughter of the late Al and Corinne Langston Anderson, was born icon December 16, 1915, in Sardis. She was a retired second grade teacher and a former member of the Sardis Woman's Club. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sardis, where she served as secretary in the 1940s.

She has no survivors.

Anthony, Marlyn Louise
Marlyn Louise Walters Anthony, 70, of Pope, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at the Sardis Nursing Home of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 15, at 11 AM at Chapel Hill Methodist Church in Pope. Rev. William Johnson and Rev. Sam B. Godfrey officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Anthony, daughter of the late Milton O. and Lenora Elizabeth Cooper Walters, was born icon March 17, 1931, in Panola County. She was a homemaker and a member of Chapel Hill Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Hayden E. Anthony of Pope; two daughters, Agnes Anthony Allen and Debbi Anthony Allday, both of Pope; three sisters, Elizabeth Anderson Goodwin of Carolton, Pauline Walters Lewis of Batesville, and Jean Walters Taylor of Denver, Colorado; a brother, Benny E. Walters of Hernando; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Chapel Hill Methodist Church and Chapel Hill cemetery.

Arnold, Nora Ellen
Nora Ellen Arnold, 90, of Sardis, died Wednesday, August 7, 2002, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Sardis United Methodist Church. Dr. Doyce Gunter and Rev. Eric Morris officiated the service. Burial was in Wesley Chapel cemetery near Sardis. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Arnold, daughter of the late Willie W. and Myrtle Crowe Chance, was born icon February 29, 1912, in Tate County. She was a housewife and a member of Sardis United Methodist Church and the Sardis Woman's Club. She was the widow of the late Marvin Arnold.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Morris of Yukon, Oklahoma; two sons, Darrel Arnold of Sardis and Ray Arnold of Hawkins, Texas; a sister, Willie Mae Bland of Coldwater; 13 grandchildren, Mindy A. Grimes, Gwen A. Long, Tracey A. Childress, Jill A. Watson, Gregory A. Morris, Keith Morris, Eric Morris, Lisa M. Hulsizer, Debbie A. Mehan, Amy A. Sullivan, Bryan Arnold, Chris Sheley and Craig Sheley; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Arnold, James D.
James D. "Jack" Arnold, 44, of Crowder, died Saturday, October 12, 2002, on Dummy Line Road in Batesville from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 15, at 10 a.m. at National Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens cemetery. National Funeral Home in Clarksdale has charge of arrangements.

Arnold, son of Mona Arnold of Lyon and the late James "J.D." Arnold, was born icon December 31, 1957, in Clarksdale. He was a welder and a Baptist.

Survivors, other than his mother, include three daughters, Jamie Frances Cross of Lu-Rand, Meagan Lynn Arnold of Clarksdale, and Jordan Danielle Arnold of Greenville, Tennessee; three sisters, Carolyn Freeman of Clarksdale, Donna Hardin of Myrtle and Barbara Walton of Moon Lake; an aunt, Frances Borgognoni of Clarksdale; a special friend, Ann Kent of Crowder; and several nieces and nephews.

Ashmore, Bobby Gene "Pete"
Bobby Gene Ashmore, 69, of Holly Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at his home of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 20, 11 a.m. at Bethel Methodist Church. Newson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Ashmore was born icon Aug. 27, 1933. He was disabled. He was preceded in death by a son Mark Ashmore.

Survivors include his wife Nettie Frances Ashmore of Holly Springs; two daughters, Patricia Waldrup of Daisy, Okla., and Ann Pace of Carrie; three step-daughters, Pateicia Bowling of Kingsport, Tenn., Toni Hood of Memphis, Tenn., and Judy Browning of Bartlett, Tenn.; one son, Wayne Ashmore of Ovett; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Askew, John W.
John W. Askew, 60, of Sardis, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Sardis Community Nursing Home of heart failure.

Graveside services were held Thursday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill cemetery. Rev. Ed Spencer officiated the service. Moore Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Askew, son of the late William Boyce and Edith Mae Griste Askew, was born icon September 18, 1941, in Sardis. He was disabled and a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. He had no survivors.
