DOWNEY
James E. "Jim" Downey Jr., 70, Surprise, Ariz., formerly of Jefferson City, died June 29, 2002, at his home.
He was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Joplin, a son of J. Everett and Betty Smith Downey. He was married May 11, 1958, in Jefferson City, to Ruth Walz, who survives at the home.
He attended Southwest Missouri State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in speech and sociology. He worked with the Missouri Department of Health before serving as assistant manager of the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce. He served as the manager of the Chamber of Commerce in Portales, N.M., and Ponca City, Okla., before moving to Santa Fe, N.M. to serve as the tourism director for the New Mexico Department of Development. After eight years in Santa Fe, he moved to Corpus Christi, Texas . He owned and operated his own company, Adept Apartment Finders, retiring in 1991. In 2000, he retired to Surprise. He was active in the Jefferson City Jaycees. He was president of the Civitan Club of Santa Fe, receiving the Civitan of the year award. He was a member of the Methodist church. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include: three sons, Dave Downey, Corpus Christi, Texas , Don Downey, Surprise, and Doug Downey, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. Wendell Stoneburner will officiate. Graveside services with military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
GEERS
Mary Angeline Geers, 89, Taos, died June 30, 2002, at Capital Region Medical Center.
She was born March 25, 1913, in Taos, a daughter of Frank A. and Mary Josephine Toebben Huhn. She was married Oct. 29, 1930, in Taos, to Louis Eugene Yoegler, who died Sept. 29, 1942. She was married Aug. 26, 1959, in St. Louis, to Herman William Geers, who died in 1972. She was married June 15, 1985, in Taos, to Hubert Bernard Bernskoetter, who died in 1996.
She was a practical nurse in St. Louis and worked for a private physician in St. Louis. She performed home care for children in St. Louis and was a housekeeper for priests. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She attended and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Taos.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Taos. The Rev. David Maher will officiate. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Parish Cemetery, Taos.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Buescher Memorial Home.
GOLLER
Barbara Graham Goller, 54, Jefferson City, died July 1, 2002, at her home.
She was born Oct. 25, 1947, in Peoria, Ill., a daughter of Carrol C. and Dorothy Alice Kehl Graham. She was married Aug. 26, 1989, in Jefferson City, to David R. Goller, who survives at the home.
She was a 1964 graduate of Peoria Central High School and a 1966 graduate of Rush Presbyterian -- St. Luke's School of Nursing in Chicago. She worked at Rush Medical Center, Cook County Hospital, Oeschner Foundation Clinic and Boone County Hospital. She began working in real estate in 1979 and owned the Real Estate Company in Jefferson City. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
Other survivors include: one daughter, D'Arcy Lynn Graham, Jefferson City; one son, Jonathan R. Graham, Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; and one sister, Beverly "Becky" Lynn Graham, Naples, Fla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Harvel R. Sanders will officiate. Private family burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors.
Memorials are suggested to Grace Episcopal Church or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
KROLL
William Allen Kroll, 50, Gravois Mills, died July 1, 2002, at his home.
He was born Aug. 2, 1951, in Helena, Mont., a son of Donald A. and Virginia Loretta Robinette Kroll.
He worked at Quality Industries in Versailles.
Survivors include: two daughters; one brother, Donald Arthur Kroll, Jefferson City; three half-brothers, Robert Madison, Richard Madison and Michael Madison; one sister, Deborah Schmidt, Laurie; four half-sisters, Rita Ansenman, Marsha Pinkerman, Linday Lampe and Phyllis Neidert; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie. The body was cremated.
MAXWELL
Quinton Maxwell, 80, Rocky Mount, died June 30, 2002, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach.
Arrangements are at Hedges Funeral Home, Osage Beach.
STARKE
Micah Allison Starke, 18, Chamois, died June 30, 2002, as a result of an automobile-train collision in Chamois.
She was born Dec. 23, 1983, a daughter of Thomas and Sheryl Nolte Starke. Her parents survive in Chamois.
She was a 2002 graduate of Chamois High School, where she was class salutatorian. She participated in volleyball, track, softball, cheerleading, basketball and band. She led the band as drum major for four years.
Other survivors include: two sisters, Ashley Starke and Caitlin Starke, both of the home; one brother, Jordan Starke, of the home; paternal grandmother Laverne Starke, Jefferson City; and maternal grandparents Shirley and Henry Nolte, Chamois.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Chamois. The Rev. Pat Dowling will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the church, with an ecumenical wake service and rosary at 8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church for the purchase of a new organ in her memory.
Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer-Hilke-Millard Funeral Home, Chamois.
WILDE
Catherine L. Wilde, Osage Beach, died July 1, 2002, at Osage Beach Health Care Center.
She was married in 1953 in St. Louis, to Wallace Wilde, who survives in Osage Beach.
She was a graduate of Loretta Academy and Webster University. She was a homemaker.
Other survivors include: two sons, Stephen Wilde, Ozark, and David Wilde, Eldon; two daughters, Elizabeth Bilgere, St. Louis, and Sarah Wilde Ertel, Burton, Mich.; one sister, Dorothy Sumner, St. Louis; and five grandchildren.
Two sons, Jeffery Wilde and Eric Wilde, preceded her in death.
Services will be at noon Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Westphalia. The Rev. Robert A. Kurwicki will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hedges Funeral Home, Osage Beach.
BRUMLEY
Shannon Brumley, 25, Brumley, died July 1, 2002, at his home.
He was born Sept. 16, 1976, in Tuscumbia, a son of Douglas and Judy Winters Brumley. His father and stepmother, Doug and Pam Brumley, survive in Iberia. His mother, Judy Harmon, survives in Ulman.
He was a 1995 graduate of Iberia High School.
Other survivors include: his fiancŽe, Burgandy Baker, Brumley; two brothers, Harrison Brumley and Cody Brumley, both of Cabot, Ark.; two stepbrothers, Michael Byrd and Daniel Byrd, both of Iberia; one stepsister, Kyla Byrd, Dixon; paternal grandparents Bob and Eunice Brumley, Brumley; and step grandparents Francis and Vivian Humphrey, Iberia.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. Ralph Byrd will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Union Cemetery near Brumley.
Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Thursday.
ECKLUND
Mary Ann Ecklund, 70, Jefferson City, died July 2, 2002, at St. Marys Health Center.
She was born July 26, 1931, in Jefferson City, a daughter of Thomas H. and Helen Drechsler Ferguson. She was married Aug. 24, 1952, in Jefferson City, to Charles A. Ecklund, who survives at the home.
A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, she was a 1949 graduate of Jefferson City High School. She was a homemaker and worked for the Missouri Department of Education from 1949-1952. She received a life membership to the Order of the Rainbow Girls. She was a charter member of the Jefferson City Music Society and was a church choir member for most of her life. She was active in the Girl Scouts, serving as Brownie and Junior Scout troop co-leader, day camp music director, Heart of Missouri Girl Scout council program committee member and Jefferson City Girl Scout project chairman. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the American Red Cross, and Capital Region Medical Center. She was a member of the Gideons International Auxiliary and the PEO, Chapter FS.
She was a former member of the First Baptist Church and Memorial Baptist Church. She currently was a member of Concord Baptist Church, where she taught at vacation Bible school for many years. She was a sponsor for youth groups at church camp. She organized and lead the Acteen group for young girls, where she helped girls reach out the the community by visits to nursing homes, hospital geriatric wards and underprivileged families. She served on many church committees and was in charge of the food closet and was chairman of the prayer chain at Concord Baptist Church. She participated in music ministry to the women's prison and organized and directed a young children's choir at church. She was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class at Concord Baptist.
Other survivors include one daughter, Helen Shade, St. Joseph, and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Jim Carter and the Rev. Jim Vest will officiate. Private graveside services will be in Riverview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the parlor of the First Baptist Church.
Memorials are suggested to the Gideons International or the charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
PALMER
Services were Monday for Clara LeHew Palmer, 91, Galena, Ill., formerly of Jefferson City, who died June 27, 2002, at Galena-Strauss Hospital.
She was born July 17, 1930, in Chicago, a daughter of William C. and Clara Bell Michaud LeHew. She was married June 4, 1950, to Gilbert Palmer, who died May 14, 1978.
She was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson City High School and lived in Jefferson City for most of her life.
Survivors include: two sons, Darrel E. Palmer, Lake Villa, Ill., and Terry L. Palmer, Savanna, Ill.; one sister, Vilarah M. Steinman, Jefferson City; seven grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren .
Graveside services were in Evergreen Cemetery in Hanover, Ill.
Arrangements were under the direction of Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover.
