Dorothy J. (Dottie) Backues, 88, of Sweet Springs, MO, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at The Lutheran Nursing Home in Concordia, MO.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Sweet Springs. Cremation with inurnment will be held at a later date in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Dunksburg, MO. Memorials may be made to The Lutheran Good Shepherd Home or Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Born November 14, 1924, in Hardin, MO, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Wilson Meador and Ida Meryl Reardon Meador. On April 16, 1983, she married Clyde A. Backues, Sr., who preceded her in death on June 27, 2001. She had lived most of her life in Sweet Springs.
Survivors include one son, Mitchell Calvin Miller and wife Brenda Lee of Jackson, GA; one daughter, Lana Miller Caywood and husband Tom of Platteville, WI; two grandsons, Elijah Caywood and wife Katharine, and Nathan Caywood; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Reva Moore, Bea Duffey and her twin sister in infancy, Martha Jane Meador; and three brothers, Cedric Meador, Lemer Meador and Junior Meador in infancy.
Norma Oetting

Norma Oetting, 92, of Concordia, MO, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at The Lutheran Nursing Home in Concordia.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2013 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Concordia with Rev. R. Lee Hagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or The Lutheran Good Shepherd Home.
Born July 1, 1920 in Alma, MO, she was the daughter of the late John Peters and Anna Franz Peters. On March 31, 1940, in Alma, she married Erich H. Oetting who preceded her in death on September 20, 2004. Norma lived in the Concordia area most of her life where she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid #3. She worked in the church Braille Ministry, served as a 4-H Leader, was a member of the Extension Club, and was a volunteer aid for The Lutheran Good Shepherd Home.
Survivors include three daughters, Lynette Burton and husband Bill of Carrollton, Dorothy Kindle and husband Phil of Blue Springs, Janice Renno of rural Concordia; one daughter-in-law, Donna Oetting of rural Concordia; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Jordyn (Jordy) Leigh Heldstab
Jordyn (Jordy) Leigh Heldstab, 7 weeks, of Thayer, Mo., died Dec. 21, 2008, at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
She was born Nov. 3, 2008, in West Plains, Mo., the daughter of Gary and Amanda Heldstab.
She is survived by: three siblings, Grace, Hannah, and Isaiah Heldstab; her grandparents, Richard and Jena Price of Oklahoma and Terry and Mary Blankinship of Missouri; and many other relatives including aunts; uncles; cousins; and friends.
Loretta Ida Dawson
Loretta Ida Dawson, 82, of Peculiar, Mo., died Nov. 24, 2008, at The Rehabilitation Center of Raymore in Raymore, Mo.
Loretta was born Dec. 26, 1925, in Salem, Ark., the daughter of Robert and Roxie (Rosier) Foster.
She married Norman Dawson on Dec. 1, 1945, in Salem. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Peculiar, a homemaker and she had previously worked at Montgomery Ward.
She is survived by: her husband, Norman Dawson, of the home; one son, Duane Dawson of Stillwell, Kan.; one daughter, Sheila Hunt, of Raymore, Mo.; two brothers, David Foster of Hardy, Ark., and James Foster, of Belton, Mo.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were held Nov. 26 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville, officiated by Rev. John Roeder of United Methodist Church in Peculiar, Mo., and Rev. Jim Vest, of South Haven Baptist Church in Belton, Mo.
Burial followed in Peculiar Cemetery in Peculiar.
Pallbearers were Dan Jonas, Ryan Dawson, Ron Hunt, Bob Bozeman, Dick Harris and Jimmie Vannordstrand.
Arrangements were under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville.

Shirley Ann Jackman
Shirley Ann Jackman, 65, of Alton, Mo., was born Oct. 6, 1943, in Alton, Mo., and died Dec. 2, 2008, at the Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains.
Survivors include: two sisters, Laura Warren and husband Clifford of Alton, Mo., Fonda Repp and husband Clarence of O'Fallon, Mo.; one brother, Fred Jackman and wife Flossie of Alton, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Carmelee (Risenhoover) Lewallen, Martinsburg, Mo.; numerous nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Ollie and Alpha Jackman; five brothers, Russell Jackman, Lonnie Jackman, Ronnie Jackman, Ray Gene Jackman and Leo Risenhoover; two sisters, Leatrice Jackman-Johnson and Anetha Jackman-Alberson.
Services were held Dec. 6 in the Clary Chapel with Bro. Jobe Steele and Bro. Tommy Boyd officiating. Burial followed in the Cave Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Alton. Memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd's View Residential Care.
Franklin D. Carter
Franklin D. Carter, 75, of Sainte Genevieve, Mo., was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Viola, Ark., the son of John Carter and Macy Batterton Carter. He died Nov. 27, 2008, at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Couer, Mo.
He was married to Janet F. Moss of St. Genevieve, Mo. May 29, 1960.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 150; served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran; a member of County Teachers Association, Missouri State Teachers Association, American Federation of Teachers, retired from Ste. Genevieve School District and taught in Ste. Genevieve County from 1964, until 1992, when he was the basketball coach in West Plains, Mo. Several of their teams qualified to go to state.
Survivors include: his wife, Janet F. (Moss) Carter; a son, Mark A. Carter and Heather, of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandchildren, Dallas and Logan Carter; and a sister, Faye Hunter of West Plains, Mo.
He was preceded in death by: his father, John Carter; his mother, Macy Batterton Carter, brothers Ewell Carter, John Carter Jr., Austin Carter and Haskel Carter; and three sisters, Ruby Teel, Jean Harrell and Lurene Bradbury.
Funeral services were held at the graveside at Crestlawn Cemetery Dec. 1 with Everett Easley officiating. Burial followed at the cemetery in Ste. Genevieve, Mo. with full military honors by VFW Post 2210.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Helen Skelley
Helen Marie Pauline Skelley was born March 5, 1927, in Cresaptown, Md., daughter of James Shepherd and Pansy Pearl Robison Shepherd and died Dec. 16, 2008, in West Plains, Mo., at the age of 81.
She was united in marriage March 5, 1946, in Cumberland, Md., to Harold Skelley who preceded her in death Nov. 5, 1987.
She was employed by Carr Lowry Glass Company in Baltimore, Md., as an assembly line worker, and after moving to the Ozarks, worked at the Puritan Garment Factory in Thayer. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Free Will Baptist Church.
She is survived by: one son, David Skelley and wife, EmmaLea of Thayer, Mo.; one daughter, Linda Honeycutt and husband, David of Thayer; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Crawford and husband, Heath, John Skelley and wife, Delisa, Sara Huffman and husband, Dave, Bill Honeycutt and wife, Carrie, Steve Honeycutt and wife, Lisa, and Davie Honeycutt and Stacy Zook; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul E. Shepherd of Waxahachie, Texas; two sisters, Lucy Wagner of Cresaptown, Md., and Carol VanMeter of Cumberland, Md.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; one grandson, Michael David Skelley; and two brothers, Robert Shepherd and Junior Shepherd.
Funeral services were held Dec. 19, in Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Rev. Wayne Cloven officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Thayer with arrangements under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home of Thayer., Mo.
