Virgil "Bud" Lanham
Virgil Leo “Bud” Lanham of Sullivan passed away on Friday, September 1, 2000 at his sister’s home in Belleville, Illinois after a long illness, having attained the age of 76 years.
Mr. Lanham was born on February 10, 1924 in Bourbon, Missouri to the late Leo and Beulah Mae (Abshire) Lanham. As a young man, he entered the United States Army and honorably served his country during World War II. On June 20, 1945 he was joined in marriage to Elizabeth Violet Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri. “Bud,” as he was fondly known to family and friends, worked over 35 years in highway and bridge construction. He was a member of Carpenter’s Local 169 of East St. Louis, Illinois, and also a member of the American Legion Post of St. Clair, Missouri. “Bud” and Elizabeth moved to Sullivan in 1981. His favorite pastime was fishing, but he also enjoyed watching football, baseball, and boxing. When he was able, he found pleasure in gardening. As a lover of animals, “Bud” often supported shelters for abused and homeless animals. He was known as a quiet and generous man who enjoyed his family. As a young boy, he was baptized a Christian, and continued throughout his life to value the Pentecostal faith.
He is survived by one daughter, Sharon Whiteside and husband, Tony, of O’Fallon, Illinois; one brother, Richard Hurst and wife, Bernie, of Redbud, Illinois; four sisters, Elizabeth Clark and husband, James, Delores Siebecker and husband, Wayne, and Glenda Haddock and husband, Billy, all of Belleville, Illinois, and Gloria Cummins of Caseyville, Illinois; one grandson, Hugh Thomas Campbell, Jr. of Sullivan; two step-grandchildren, Cindy Lill and Tania Scales; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, on March 8, 1989.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Alfred Morgan officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery.
James W. Mayberry
James W. Mayberry of Sullivan passed away on Friday, September 1, 2000 at the age of 77 years.
Mr. Mayberry was born on April 3, 1923 in Goodwater, Missouri to the late Walter Steven and Ida Viola (Denis) Mayberry. After being raised in the Goodwater area, he moved to St. Louis as a young man. In 1946 he enlisted in the United States Army, and honorably served his country during the close of World War II. On March 3, 1946 he was united in marriage to Rosalie R. Pratt in St. Louis. Soon thereafter, Mr. Mayberry went to work as a union truck driver and continued in this field for over 38 years. He was last employed by Gordon Transport from 1960 through 1983. He moved to the Bourbon area in 1970. On September 3, 1983 his wife, Rosalie, preceded him in death. Five years later Mr. Mayberry remarried by taking Helen (Isgriggs) Pennock as his wife on October 9, 1988. He enjoyed square dancing, camping, traveling, and spending time with his family. He was known as an easy-going man with a great sense of humor who simply loved life and deeply loved people. Mr. Mayberry was a member of the Lions Club and also a retired member of Teamsters Local 600. Most importantly, he surrendered his life to Christ prior to his death.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Mayberry of Sullivan; one son, Charles Mayberry and special friend, Beverly Brueggemann of Bourbon; one daughter, Melody Buehrle and husband, Mike of Wildwood, Missouri; three stepsons, Kenneth Lee Pennock and wife, Carol of Roseman, California, Michael Allen Pennock and wife, Pat of Bourbon, and Mark Gregory Pennock and wife, Leigh of Grand Rapids, Michigan; four stepdaughters, Georgia Buff and husband, Larry of Granite Shouls, Texas, Vera Ray and husband, Bill of St. Louis, Rhonda Armstrong and husband, Leroy of Bourbon, and Brenda Dotson and husband, Darrell of Sullivan; three brothers, Victory Mayberry and wife, Peggie of Rochelle, Illinois, Walter Steven Mayberry, Jr. and wife, Mary of Arnold, Missouri, and Joy Luke Mayberry and wife, Ophelia of Stillman Valley, Illinois; one sister, Mary Ann Wood and husband, Walter of Florissant, Missouri; three grandchildren, Natasha Joy Thurmond, Rosalie Ann Mayberry, and Brian James Buehrle; twenty step-grandchildren, forty-four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to those already listed, Mr. Mayberry was preceded in death by two brothers, Elwin and Melvin Mayberry, and three grandchildren, Kevin and Keith Mayberry and Amanda Buehrle.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 4, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Marvin Ivie officiating. Interment was in Hill Cemetery at Bourbon, Missouri. If desired, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or to Missouri Baptist Medical Center I.C.U. of St. Louis in memory of Mr. James W. Mayberry.
Margaraet Mary Rohrer
Margaret Mary Rohrer of Bourbon, Missouri, passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 at the age of 84 years.
Mrs. Rohrer was born May 13, 1916 in Bourbon to the late Edmund L. and Edith Bertha (Franklin) Casey. She was a life long resident of the Bourbon area and in December of 1938 she was married to Walter C. “Bud” Rohrer in Little Rock, Arkansas. Mrs. Rohrer was a business lady in the community for several years having operated a furniture store, Laundromat and rental property.
She is survived by two nieces, Rhonda Puebla of Sullivan, Missouri and Mary Pineda of Bourbon, great-nieces and nephews, Colby Williams, Chris McCance, Shelby Boehmer, Kelly McCance, Darci Paul, Daxell Puebla and a special great-niece, Rachelle (Boobie)VanLue other relatives and special friends, Donna Lindaman, Doris Coffel and Inge Lovell. Mrs. Rohrer was prededed in death by her husband “Bud” Rohrer in 1965 and later by her brother Edmund Casey, Jr., and a sister Ollie Casey.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 9, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with the Rev. Father Robert Duesdieker officiating. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery. If desired memorials to the Kidney Foundation may be made in the name of Margaret Mary Rohrer.
Thelma Mae Quaife
Thelma M. Quaife of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Thursday, September 7, 2000 at the age of 83 years.
Tahelma was born January 14, 1917 at High Gate, Missouri to to the late Louie and Lula (Simpson) Spurgeon. As a young lady, she was baptized into the Baptist faith at High Gate. She found pleasure in fishing and gardening and especially cooking. Thelma was a Nurses Aide at Doctor’s Hospital in Poplar Bluff, Missouri for twenty years. She enjoyed family gatherings and did the cooking and provided the love and tenderness only a mother could give.
She is survived by four daughters, Janet Venson of Sullivan, Jerris Kelley of Sierra Visa, Arizona, Pat Parks of Davis, Oklahoma and Peggy Blogg of Doniphan, Missouri, two sons, Johnny Reeves of Fenton, Missouri and Jim Reeves of Belton, Missouri, one brother, George Spurgeon of Clarksville, Tennessee, three sisters, Cema Garrison of Rolla, Missouri, Rozel Salts of St. James, Missouri, and Genora Jost of Sullivan, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husbands, Thelma was preceded in death by one son Jackie Armstrong, four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m. Sunday, September 10, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with her nephew Kenny Salts officiating. Interment was in High Gate Cemetery, St. James, Missouri.
Harold “Hal” Vedder
Harold William “Hal” Vedder of Ellisville, Missouri, formerly of Sullivan, passed away at the family home on Saturday, June 24, 2000 at the age of 75 years.
“Hal,” as he was known to his family and friends, was born on November 17, 1924 in St. Clair to the late William Frank and Esther May (nee Bay) Vedder. He was raised in St. Clair, graduating from St. Clair High School in 1942. Graduating in the midst of the World War II era, Hal soon enlisted in the United States Army, in which he honorably served until December 30, 1945. He saw service in the Pacific war theatre in the Northern Solomons, New Guinea, Luzon and the Southern Philippine campaigns, and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
On June 29, 1947 he was married to Elizabeth Anna Jean Dace in Rolla. Hal and Ann had two children, Ronald William and Pamela Darlene. Hal and Ann lived in Claremore, Oklahoma for a time after their marriage. They returned to Missouri in 1948. They made their home in St. Clair, then in Sullivan for a number of years, before moving to Ellisville in 1961, where they had since made their home. Hal was a purchasing agent for Precision Automotive Components Corporation (PAACO) of Sullivan and Ballwin, and later worked as a contract specialist for the United States Government a number of years. Hal was active in community events in Ellisville. He was past president and founder of the Ellisville Citizens League. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Lafayette Baptist Church in Ellisville. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, most precious memories are the times he spent with his family. Hal Vedder will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; his son, Ron and wife, Debbie of Pacific; two grandchildren, Christa Pamela Vedder, and Matthew Boyer and wife, Jodie of the U.S. Air Force in Abilene, Texas; a special niece, Diana Richards of Munroe Falls, Ohio who was raised in the Vedder home, and husband, Dave; one brother, Vernon and wife, Margaret of St. Louis; one aunt, Pauline Bay of Pacific; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. In addition to his parents, a daughter, Pamela Darlene Boyer, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Reverend Jimmy Ray Dace officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery with military honors. If desired, memorials may be made to Home Health Plus Hospice of St. Louis, Missouri.
Barbara Duba
Barbara Lee Watson Duba of Sullivan, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2000 at the age of 58 years.
Barbara was born October 21, 1941 to the late Miles and Marie (Cain) Watson at Sullivan, Missouri. She attended and graduated from Sullivan High School, class of 1960. Barbara was employed in factory work and later as a cook until ill health forced her retirement. She enjoyed music, reading, puzzles, sewing, and crafts, and was described as a woman with many dreams. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by one son, James Schoenfeld and wife, Marky of Owensville, Missouri, one sister, Frances Kays and husband, Pat of Sullivan, three grandchildren, Rebecca, Beth, and Cory Schoenfeld all of Owensville, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Lee Schoenfeld, and one brother, Bud Watson.
A gathering of family and friends was held from 2:00 –5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 17, 2000 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the family in memory of Barbara Watson Duba.
Clark E. Strauser, Sr.
Clark Eugene Strauser, Sr., of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away at his home on Sunday, September 10, 2000 at the age of 75 years.
Mr. Strauser was born June 25, 1925 at Kansas City, Kansas to the late Robert B. and Carrie Etta (Bates) Strauser. He has lived in the Kansas City area until the age of 4 years when he then moved to St. Louis. After a short while, the family then moved to the Sullivan area where they farmed for many years. In his youth, Clark was baptized into the Baptist faith in the Bourbeuse River. He was married to Eileen Cameron on May 20, 1945. She preceded him in death in July of 1961. On November 29, 1963 Clark married Lorna Lee Vassalli Blum. Clark was self-employed the majority of his life in the construction trade and service station equipment business and recently was a real estate agent for Century 21 Reality. In his younger days, Clark enjoyed pheasant hunting and later was a member of Sullivan Lodge #69 A.F. & A.M. He was a loving husband and father, grandfather and uncle who will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Lorna, two sons, Clark Strauser, Jr. and Jerry Strauser both of Sullivan, one step-son, Dan Blum of Sullivan, two daughters, Connie Hager and Lori Heidbrink both of Sullivan, one step-daughter, Ricki Shafferkoetter of Sullivan, one sister, Goldie Tacchi of Ellisville, Missouri, 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Strauser was also preceded in death a great-grandson, Charles Matthew Holtz, by three brothers, Clarence, Everett (Bud), and Paul (Junior) Strauser and a sister Loraine Carey.
Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor David Earls officiating. Interment was in Cave Spring Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Clark Strauser was held from 4:30 until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Masonic Services were conducted at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home under the auspices of Sullivan Lodge #69 A.F. & A.M. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the Diabetes Foundation.
Laura Littlefield
Laura Mae Littlefield of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2000 at the age of 84 years.
Mrs. Littlefield was born October 22, 1915 at West Memphis, Tennessee to the late Mansfield and Launvangy (Goodman) Bosheres. She came to Missouri in October of 1940 and had lived in St. Louis until 1990 when she then made her home in Sullivan. On December 4, 1932 she was married to Leslie Lee Littlefield and to this marriage 12 children were born of which a daughter Betty Stranze preceded her in death. Her devotion and dedication to her children caused her to become a very caring and loving mother. She enjoyed her family and her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren which is estimated at over 100 individuals. As a young lady, she was baptized into the Baptist faith.
She is survived by six sons: Lecil Lee Littlefield and wife Carol of Villa Ridge, Missouri, George Earl Littlefield and wife Christine of Sullivan, Donald Littlefield and wife Beverly of Barnhart, Missouri, James, Ricky and Michael Littlefield all of Sullivan, five daughters, Myra Carter of Ellsinore, Missouri, Billie Jean Casby and husband Bill of St. Louis, Martha Chambers and husband David of Arnold, Missouri, Joyce Rieken and Adele Hudson and husband Sonny all of Sullivan, a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a special grandson, Michael Littlefield, Jr., whom she loved as her own, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Along with her daughter, Mrs. Littlefield was preceded in death by her husband Leslie in June of 1960, and one brother, Gilbert Bosheres.
Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Rev. G. Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
