Beatrice Guthrie
Beatrice B. Guthrie of Leslie, Missouri passed away at her home on Monday, February 12, 2001 at the age of 77 years.
Mrs. Guthrie was born January 9, 1924 at St. Louis, Missouri to the late Benjamin Harrison and Mary Alice (Fowler) Seaton. She lived in the St. Louis area until her marriage in 1941 to Luther Guthrie. They made their home in the Leslie area where she found pleasure in flower gardening and bird watching. Mrs. Guthrie also enjoyed arts and crafts and was a member of New Testament Baptist Church of Sullivan.
She is survived by three daughters, Brenda Setzler and husband Dave of Sullivan, Kit Lahmann and husband Dan of Sullivan, and Judi Guthrie of Stuart, Florida, one brother, C. Oren Seaton of Sullivan, one sister, Alice Parmentier of Union, Missouri, 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Mrs. Guthrie was preceded in death by her husband Luther, one son, Gregory Guthrie, one brother Lloyd Seaton, two sisters, Earlene Weirick and Delores Counts, and a grandson Donald Teems.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2001 in Evergreen Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri with Mr. Stan Briggs officiating. Per Mrs. Guthrie’s request, there was no visitation. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan.
Arnold Woodcock, Sr.
Arnold Lee Woodcock, Sr. of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Monday at the age of 55 years.
He is survived by a son, Arnie Woodcock, Jr. of Sullivan, three brothers, David Woodcock and wife Pat of St. Louis, Frank Woodcock of Stanton and Kenneth Woodcock of the state of Pennsylvania, two sisters, Pauline Ferry of High Ridge, Missouri, and Darlene Dace and husband Don of Bourbon, Missouri, a close personal friend and caregiver, Annie Blankenship of Sullivan, Missouri other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Stanton Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Arnold Woodcock will be from 4:30 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. V.F.W. Memorial services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Those who desire may make memorials to the Stanton Cemetery Fund.
Elizabeth (Beth) Kimker
Elizabeth Ann (Beth) Kimker of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at the age 61 years.
She is survived by her husband Gene Kimker, two sons, Stephen Kimker and wife Erica of Sullivan, and Kevin Kimker of St. Louis, Missouri, one daughter, Jeanette Rabbjohns and husband Simon of Bourbon, Missouri, her parents, James T. and Ruthene Harrison of Bourbon, three brothers, Bob Harrison of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Bill and Dave Harrison both of Bourbon, one sister, Sue Kline of Alton, Illinois, one granddaughter, Emily Kimker, other grandchildren, Eric Tucker and Kelly Farrar whom she loved as her own, other relatives and friends.
Memorial funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001 from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1898 S. Service Road between Sullivan and Bourbon. Those who desire may make memorials to the Kingdom Hall or the family of Elizabeth Ann Kimker. Arrangements are under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Dolly Lahmann
Dolly S. Lahmann of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Friday, March 2, 2001 at the age of 85 years.
Mrs. Lahmann was born on April 1, 1915 in Sullivan to the late John and Susan (West) Studdard, and continued to live the majority of her life in the Sullivan area. On September 3, 1934 she was joined in marriage to Chester Lahmann at Steelville, Missouri and to their union six children were born. In addition to serving her family, Dolly worked for several years at the International Shoe Company, and also for over twenty-four years at the Sullivan Community Hospital as a nurses aide in the nursery. She enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, fishing, and horseback riding. Dolly was a member of the Reedville Baptist Church. She will be remembered and cherished as an extremely loving mother whose life revolved around her family.
She is survived by five sons, Dan Lahmann and wife, Kit, David Lahmann and wife, Wanda, Chester Lahmann and wife, Bonnie, William Lahmann and wife, Rosemary, all of Sullivan, and Donald Lahmann and wife, Nancy of Berryville, Arkansas; one daughter, Margaret Wagner and husband, Allan of Prescott Valley, Arizona; two brothers, Pat Studdard and wife, Martha of Sullivan and Asa Studdard of Doolittle, Missouri; one sister, Frances O’Neill of Sullivan; twenty-six grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lahmann was preceded in death by her husband, Chester in 1987; four brothers, Fred, Bill, Jeff, and Roy Studdard; three sisters, Grace Duffield, Lilly Warden, and a sister in infancy; one grandson, Michael David Lahmann, and one great-grandson, John Meade.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Chester Lahmann, Jr. officiating. Interment was in Reedville Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children in memory of Mrs. Dolly Lahmann.
Maxine Neil
Maxine Neil of Cuba, Missouri passed away Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Missouri Baptist Hospital of Sullivan at the age of 75 years.
Mrs. Neil was born October 3, 1925 at Eureka, Missouri to Ferd and Virginia (Godbey) Butts. She was raised in the St. Louis area and had made her home in various parts of Missouri, Illinois and Iowa. On August 20, 1956 she was married to Don Neil at St. Louis. For a time Maxine worked outside of the home but her true vocation was that of a homemaker. She took an interest in sports, especially baseball and stock car racing. She also found pleasure in gardening and reading. She was known as a woman with a strong character and will who will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Betty Dean of San Antonio, Texas, one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Gary Taylor of East Moline, Illinois, one brother, William Butts and wife Kathy of St. Louis, Missouri, three grandchildren, Michael and Laura Taylor and Joey Dean other relatives and friends.
Memorial funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until time of services at 2:00 p.m. at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. In lieu of flowers memorials to the American Heart or Lung Association are desired.
David Lee Farrell
David Lee Farrell, born March 9, 1957 in St. Louis, MO. Passed away March 12, 2001 in Dixon, MO at the age of 44 years and 3 days.
He was the loving paternal son of Janet Lee Love of Marian, NC and Gilbert Lee Farrell of Arkansas. Loving adopted son of Gilbert Edward and Dorothy Ruth Farrell of St. Louis, MO. Loving grandson of Edna Pearl White and the late Joseph Lyle White of Sullivan, MO. Dear brother of Diana Lee Yokley (Tony) of Sullivan, MO, Debra Lamkins of Arkansas, Terry and Steve Love and Emily Diane McKinney all of North Carolina. Dear father of Michael Paul Farrell of Massachusetts, Nicholas Lyle Farrell of Winfeld, MO and David Edward Farrell of St. Peters, MO Beloved grandfather of Joshua Farrell of Massachusetts. Special friend to Paula, Terry, Vicki Grable and Gary Stewart. Loving master to pet dog, Sadie Mae. Our loving uncle, brother-in-law, cousin and friend.
Mr. Farrell was raised in the St. Louis area and was self-employed in the home construction trade until ill health caused his early retirement. He found great pleasure in stock car and drag racing and also motorcycles. His true love however, was his dog Sadie Mae. He was an honorary member of Wounded Sons and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001 from the EATON Funeral Home, Sullivan, MO Interment will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Bellefontaine, MO. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday evening at the Eaton Funeral Home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in memory of David Farrell to Diana Yokley, in care of the Eaton Funeral Home.
Patricia O'Neal
Patricia L. O'Neal of Steelville, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital, Kirkwood, Missouri at the age of 51 years.
She is survived by her parents, Stanley and Jetty O'Neal of Bourbon, Missouri, her soul-mate Mark McDermott of Steelville, one brother, Larry O'Neal of Centertown, Missouri, three sisters, Peggy Voisey and Sandra Fisher, both of Cuba, Missouri and Faye Garrett of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Ms. O'Neal was also preceded in death by a niece Jennifer O'Neal.
Patricia was born January 24, 1950 at St. Louis, Missouri and for a time was raised in East Carondelet, Illinois. She moved to the Sullivan area with her parents and had attended the Bourbon School District. She was an outgoing individual, who enjoyed entertaining others by singing and writing songs. She will long be remembered by her many friends as a special lady who cared for others by opening her heart to them.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Buffalo Cemetery. Visitation for Patricia O'Neal will be from 5 until 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 12 noon until time of service at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Julia Faye Sullivan Azbell
Julia Faye Azbell passed away at home in Santa Barbara, California after a brief illness on March 4th. Born and raised in Sullivan, founded by her great-great-grandfather, Stephen Sullivan, she was proud of her pioneer ancestors who traveled with Daniel Boone to settle Sullivan. Among her family’s relation was Phoebe Apperson Hearst, mother of William Randolph Hearst. One of five children of the late Stephen and Susan Sullivan, Faye graduated as valedictorian of Sullivan High School in 1933, where she excelled in many activities, including pianist for the school orchestra. Following graduation, she attended college in St. Louis for three years and was employed for five years for an investment firm.
On December 19, 1941 Faye married William (Bill) Azbell at St. Peter’s Naval Chapel, Mare Island, California, just 12 days after the Pearl Harbor disaster of WWII. Faye’s new husband already was in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard a submarine based at Mare Island. Their only child, Shelley, also was born there.
In 1948, the family moved to Santa Barbara when Bill was assigned as Navy Recruiting Officer. Faye and Bill enjoyed life together there and their activities as members of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club. Bill retired from the Navy and became interested in real estate and Faye spent many; years working as a volunteer for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Historical Museum, PTA, the Cancer Foundation, Lobero Theatre, the Republican Women’s Organization of Santa Barbara and Southern California, an officer of the Republican Central Committee of Santa Barbara County, and an associate member of the Republican State Central Committee. She also served as the first woman president of La Mesa Improvement Association, during which time she was instrumental in a city-wide bond initiative to establish Shoreline Park.
One her most memorable life experiences was to be honored in 1956 by the Long Beach Fleet Reserve Association, when she was chosen from more than 200,000 entries and one of 30 candidates from around the world vying for the title of Mrs. United States Navy. This was not a beauty pageant, but was based on a written composition on why women were proud to be Navy wives. The highlight of the event was reviewing the Navy’s 1st Fleet. While on board the cruiser USS St. Paul, 75 warships filed by in formation, while the Navy's Blue Angels flew overhead. During another part of the 10-day event, more than 3,000 sailors and Marines thrilled spectators with precision marching down Long Beach Boulevard.
The family became world travelers, following Bill’s retirement from the Navy. The enjoyed visiting Europe, Mexico, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan and China. Nevertheless, Santa Barbara and Sullivan, Missouri remained Faye’s favorites.
Faye is survived by her husband Bill and daughter Shelley Redford Azbell, her brother Warren A. Sullivan and wife Thelma, formerly of Goleta, CA and now of Las Vegas, NV, her sister-in-law, Mattie Sullivan, formerly of Sullivan, MO and now of Tucson, AZ; three nieces and three nephews, Sydney Sullivan Knott of Las Vegas, NV, Susan Sullivan Perkins of Colton, CA, Sally Ann Murray Bocklage of Washington, MO, Judge Walter Murray of Union, MO, John Sullivan of Tucson, AZ and Dr. Donald Azbell of Bradenton, FL. A brother, John Leo Sullivan and sisters Ruth Sullivan Murray and Edwin Sullivan preceded her in death.
A private service will be held in Sullivan in August. Friends who wish may contribute to the Faye Sullivan Valedictorian Fund c/o Bank of Sullivan, PO Box 489, Sullivan, MO 63080. Each year since 1996, the valedictorian of Sullivan High School’s senior class has received a scholarship check in the Sullivan name from the fund.
Faye chose to view the world through the eyes of an optimist and that “footprint” touched all who knew her. Though absent, her print will leave a deep and lasting impression.
Randall L. Bacon
Randall L. Bacon of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Thursday, March 22, 2001 at the age of 85 years. Mr. Bacon was born August 31, 1915 at Bourbon, Missouri to Cebert and Mabel (Garrett) Bacon. He had lived his entire life in the Sullivan area. Mr. Bacon honorably served his country during W.W. II with the U.S. Navy. On October 5, 1940 he was married to Frana M. Sherman at Fredericktown, Missouri and to this marriage one child was born. Mr. Bacon’s vocation was that of a commercial truck driver for various companies. He last drove for Peterson Oil Company in Sullivan, a position he had held for thirty years. Mr. Bacon found pleasure in the game of golf. He was a member of the Sullivan Country Club and was club champion in 1971. Also, he was a 60 year member of Sullivan Oddfellows Lodge # 156. Mr. Bacon joined the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department in 1938 and was active in his duties until his death. His membership in the department spanned 63 years and he was quite possibly the oldest active firefighter in the state of Missouri, if not the nation. He had the privilege of having ladder truck 812 dedicated to his honor in February of 1996. He was a beloved comrade of the fire district and will be affectionately remembered for his contributions and unwavering service to the Sullivan community.
He is survived by his son Randy Bacon and wife Doris of Sullivan, three sisters, Mabel King and Mary Sue Waltee both of Sullivan and Betty Farrar of the state of Iowa, two grandchildren, Stacey Tyree and Eric Bacon, five great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Callee and Blane Tyree, Joshua and Benjamin Bacon, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Bacon was preceded in death by his wife Frana in January of 1997, two brothers, Bud and Bert Bacon, and two sisters, Thelma Davis and Lilly McConnell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday from the Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan with interment in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Randall Bacon will be from 4:30 – 9:00 p.m. on Friday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan and from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 at Grace Untied Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family desires memorials be made to the Grace United Methodist Church.
