Ruth M. Williams

Ruth M. Williams of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at the age of 89 years.

Mrs. Williams was born June 29, 1911 at Danville, Illinois to the late Samuel Herbert and Mary Jane (Johnson) Gaines. She was raised in the Danville area and graduated high school there. On June 20, 1936 she was married to Donald Ray Williams at Danville and to this marriage two daughters were born. In 1941 the family moved to California where Ruth became employed as a Congressional Secretary in government offices in Los Angeles. In June of 1987, Ruth came to the Sullivan area to make her home. While in California she was involved with several women’s clubs and Seniors groups. As a young girl, she was baptized into the Baptist faith and was active in her church work until recent years.

She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Williams and Donna Isgriggs both of Sullivan, two grandchildren, Cindy Garner and husband Carl of Sullivan and Debra Mercer and husband Bobby of Sullivan, 6 great-grandchildren, Johnathan and Michael Garner, Jamie Isgriggs, Jessica, Alyssa and Jacob Mercer, other relatives and friends.

Visitation for Mrs. Ruth Williams will be from 3 until 5 p.m. on Thursday at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Interment with private family services will be held Monday, April 23rd at Rose Hills Memorial Gardens in Whittier, California.

Gladys M. Orton

Gladys M. Orton of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2001 at the age of 80 years.

Mrs. Orton was born on July 13, 1920 in Jonesville, Virginia to the late David V. and Dollie (Pendelton) Orick. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Gideon, Missouri, and later in her life to the Sullivan area. On May 30, 1942 she was united in marriage to James Orton. Her primary occupation throughout her adult years was that of serving her family as a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker. Gladys enjoyed sewing, quilting, puzzles, yard work, and especially being “Grannie” to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also was a member of the Cuba Church of Christ. Mrs. Orton will be remembered and cherished as a humble, caring, and giving person who found great pleasure and contentment in serving others.

She is survived by three sons, Roy Watson and wife, Pat of Sullivan, Barry Orton and wife, Theodora of Leasburg, and John Orton and wife, Becky of Bourbon; two daughters, Gertie Tourville and husband, John of Sullivan, and Connie Roskowske and husband, Douglas of St. James; one brother, Herbert Orick and wife, Jean of Bourbon; one sister, Mary Ary and husband, Ralph of St. James; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Orton was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Glen, and Bay Orick.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Dr. Vance S. Davis, Minister officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery.

Vincent (V.J.) Gann

Vincent Jackson (V.J.) Gann of Sullivan, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2001in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 64 years.

V.J. was born on September 21, 1936 in Sullivan, Missouri to the late Vincent and Alice (Jackson) Gann. He was raised and lived his entire life in Sullivan. He attended Sullivan Public School and was a graduate of the class of 1954. As a small boy, the family raise milk cows and he ould fall asleep at school because his milk delivery day started at 4:30 a.m. In the spring of 1949 the Gann’s built a restaurant and service station on the southeast Route 66 and Elmont corner of the farm. They named the business Gann’s Cafe and Service Station. In 1951, they built a snack bar adjoining the restaurant and sold ice cream and root beer. On July 6, 1957 V.J. was married to Margaret Wilkerson at Sullivan and to this union three children were born. Together, they owned and operated a Gulf service station where the 185 Mobil is today. In later years, the restaurant was renamed to Du Kum Inn and Joe and Nell Krygiel became a part of the Gann family. In 1989 V.J. and Margaret sold the Gulf station to Wallis Oil. In 1992 they built Vin Gann Storage and MarGann Outlet and also became a U-Haul dealer in 1999.

V.J. received his Associate Degree in Automotive Engineering from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He honorably served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserve. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and before his discharge, was Mess Sergeant for Company C, 407th Infantry Brigade. His cooking ability was the envy of many of the other units in the Army of that time. V.J. was a member of Temple Baptist Church where he along with Margaret were Sunday School teachers of the Beginner Department for 17 years. He was an avid Boy Scout leader having received the Order of the Arrow along with his son, Brian. He served as President of the Sullivan Boy’s Khoury League and coached several years Little League ball. His fondest experiences of raising his children were the many camping trips they took along with their Grandma and Grandpa Gann. He loved sports car racing and rebuilt several vehicles. V.J. was a bus driver for the Sullivan C-2 School District for many years and truly loved all the children on his route. He greatly enjoyed taking the Band and Chorus groups on their many trips. One never wanted to ask him about his daughter, Laurie’s coaching and her basketball team because he never would quit talking. During his serious illness; just mention basketball and you got a smile. For any excuse he could come up with, he would say he was going to see Valerie and cook her a meal. His children were his every thought and loved trips to Tulsa to see Brian and Billie and his only grandchildren, Jonathan and Jacob.

He is survived by his wife Margaret of the home, one son Brian Gann and his wife Billi of Tulsa, Oklahoma, two daughters, Laurie Gann of Linn, Missouri and Valerie Gann of Mason City, Iowa, 2 grand sons, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday from the Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan with interment in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. VJ Gann will be from 4:30 until 9 p.m. from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan and from 9 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at Temple Baptist Church. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to Temple Baptist Church.

Violet S. Cartwright

Violet S. Cartwright of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the age of 84 years.

She is survived by two sons, Clyde Cartwright and wife, Janice of Bourbon, Missouri and Dennis Cartwright of High Ridge, Missouri; one sister, Ida Thurmond of Sullivan; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Stanton Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Violet Cartwright will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Homer S. Allison

Homer Allison of Cuba, Missouri passed away at his home on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the age of 83 years.

Mr. Allison was born at Illiopolis, Illinois on March 12, 1918 to the late Charley and Margaret Etter Allison. He was raised in that area until the age of 12 when the family moved to the Hinch area near Bourbon. On September 14, 1940 he was married to Ethel Troutt at Bourbon and to this marriage one son was born. Mr. Allison was employed for a time at Paramount Cap in Bourbon and later Long Year Drilling Company. In 1945 he and Ethel moved to the St. Louis area where he became employed at Carter Carburetor Company as an assembler. He retired from there after 35 years of service in January of 1980. Mr. Allison was a member of UAW Local 819 and the First Missionary Baptist Church of Bourbon.

He is survived by his wife Ethel nee Troutt of the home, one son and daughter-in-law Rev. Larry and Lana Allison of DeSoto, Missouri, one grandson, Tod Allison and wife Karen of DeSoto, sisters-in-law Velma Allison of Steelville, Missouri and Helen Higgins and husband Leland of Leasburg, Missouri, a brother-in-law J.C. Troutt of Steelville, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Allison was preceded in death by two brothers Otis and Steven Allison.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday from First Baptist Church in Bourbon with interment in Crossroads Cemetery, Leasburg, Missouri. Visitation for Mr. Home Allison will be from 5 – 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon and Sunday from 1 p.m. until time of service at the church.

Donald E. Holt

Donald E. Holt of Leslie, Missouri passed away on April 23, 2001 at the age of 45 years.

Donald was born March 14, 1956 at Cape Giradeau, Missouri to Ulva Mae Smith Holt and the late Grant Holt. He was raised in Cape Girardeau and graduated Cape Central High School, class of 1974. He was employed on the shipping barges in St. Louis for a time and on July 15, 1989 was married to Marcia Schmidt at Cape Girardeau. In 1990, he and Marcia moved their family to the Leslie, Missouri area where Donald became employed with Mullen Machine Company in St. Clair, Missouri. He found pleasure in fishing and had a great passion for music, especially the “oldies”. As an adult, he was baptized and was a member of Word of Life Worship Center in Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia Holt of Leslie; two sons, Dereck Curtis and Joshua Holt, both of Leslie; one daughter, Jessica Holt of St. Louis; his mother, Ulva Holt of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; parents-in-law, Neil and Shirley Schmidt of Leslie; two brothers, one sister, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation for Donald E. Holt will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2001 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Seline Britton

Seline J. Britton of Sullivan, passed away Tuesday at the age of 65 years.

She is survived by her husband, Junior Britton of the home, four sons, David Britton and wife Rhonda of Stanton, Missouri, Dennis and wife Robin of Sullivan, Scott and wife Sue of Sullivan and Larry and wife Katie of Stanton, two daughters, Elsie Brake and husband Ronald of Bourbon and Teresa Bousawa (BOO-SAW) of Armistead, Kentucky, two brothers, Billy Coplin of Sullivan and Douglas Coplin of Bourbon, four sisters, Geneva Pyatt of Bourbon, Bonnie Hollingshead of Sullivan, Connie Mercer of Sullivan, and Shirley Meyers of Booneville, Missouri, 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in Cave Spring Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Seline Britton will be from 4:30 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Robert C. Held

Robert C. Held of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2001 at the age of 79 years. Mr. Held was born on August 25, 1921 in Sandborn, Indiana to the late Carl and Aleda (Strate) Held.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita (Alexander) Held of Sullivan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Annette and Don Heasman of Canada, Phyllis and Bill Coppage of Sullivan, and Bobbie and Pete Berga of Anchorage, Alaska; two brothers, Herbert Held of Freelandville, Indiana and Richard Held and wife, Lucy of Gary, Indiana; three sisters, Dorothy Pitts of Caseyville, Illinois, Margaret Jackson of Vincennes, Indiana and Mary Harris of San Diego, California; one sister-in-law, Rosemary Held of Caseyville, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Held was preceded in death by his son, Billy Carl Held and two brothers, John and Bruce Held.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 from the First Presbyterian Church in Sullivan. Interment with Graveside Committal Service and Military Honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2001 at the Bethel United Church of Christ Cemetery in Freelandville, Indiana. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan and from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sullivan. If desired, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Sullivan in memory of Mr. Robert C. Held.

Traci L. Schuler

Teresa “Traci” Leahnohealani (Hawaiian meaning Heavenly Gift from God and is pronounced “Laya No Heya Lani”) Schuler of Washington, Missouri, formerly of Sullivan, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2001 at the age of 22 years.

“Traci,” as she was fondly known to family and friends, was born on July 8, 1978 in Wahiawa, Hawaii to Patrick Campbell and Glenda Graham Bates. As a young girl, she moved to the Bourbon and Sullivan area, and graduated from the Bourbon High School in 1996. She was accepted into East Central College’s nursing program and inducted into Chi Delta, the Phi Theta Kappa Chapter of the National Honor Society of ECC. Her biography was also published in the National Dean’s List. “Traci” had a heart for handicapped people, and therefore worked as an aide and caregiver for various group homes. She was presently working at the Emmaus House, Home for the Autistic and was a volunteer at Phoenix House. She recently was furthering her education as a student at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL). She currently held a 3.9 GPA and had received several scholarships which included the Dotti Betz Memorial Nursing Scholarship, Temple Baptist Church of Sullivan and Missouri Baptist Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship. She was also a teaching student at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL). “Traci” especially found pleasure in spending time with her son, Paul David, at the St. Louis Zoo, Grant’s Farm, and area parks. Other employment included part-time work at Shoney’s restaurant and as an AVON representative. “Traci” was also a Board Member of the Franklin County Board for the Handicapped. She attended the First Assembly of God in Bourbon, and will be remembered and cherished as a beautiful, caring person with a kind and giving heart.

She is survived by her son, Paul David Schuler, Jr. and his father, Paul Schuler, both of Sullivan; her mother, Glenda Bates and her fiancee, Lee Davis, both of Sullivan; her stepfather, Floyd Bates of Alton, Missouri; her father, Patrick Campbell of the state of New York; two brothers, Matt Bates and Carl Alexander, both of Sullivan; one sister, Kawehi Campbell of Honolulu, Hawaii; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2001 from the First Assembly of God in Bourbon, Missouri with Pastor Harold Harrison and Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Sullivan. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Mary M. Kellett

Mary Marie Kellett of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2001 at the age of 66 years.

Mrs. Kellett was born on February 5, 1935 in Ravenden Springs, Arkansas and was raised in that community by A. E. and Dicie Guntharp. On February 5, 1949 she was joined in marriage to Jerry D. Kellett in Ravenden Springs, and to this union three children were born. In addition to serving her family as a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, Mary worked in the container manufacturing industry for approximately 25 years. She found pleasure in shopping and spending time with her family, especially spoiling her grandchildren. She was a member of the McAroy Church of Christ in Ravenden Springs, and will be remembered and cherished as a woman of love and the hub of her family.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Kellett of Sullivan; two sons, Cary Kellett and wife, Patricia of Cedar Hill, Missouri and Terry Kellett of Stanton, Missouri; one daughter, Judy Forester and husband, John of Sullivan; six grandchildren, Chip Forester and wife, Angela, Aaron Forester, and Stephaine, Kimberly, Justin, and Krystal Kellett; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Michaela Forester; three sisters, Lorraine Morrison and husband, Roy of House Springs, Missouri, Betty Farris and husband, Bud of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Bernice Nessin of Rockford, Illinois; many nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Kellett was preceded in death by two brothers, Kent and Daily Stacy.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Minister Terry Frizzell officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery.
