Edna Helms Lambing
Edna Helms Lambing of Branson, Missouri formerly of Sullivan/Bourbon area, passed away Friday, August 24, 2001 at the age of 89 years.
Edna was born May 14, 1912 to the parents of Barbara “Annie” Tutterrow Garner Helms and Thomas Helms. She was born and grew up in rural Franklin County, Missouri, near an area called Cave Springs. Her memories of growing up on a farm surrounded by a loving extended family, including her grandmother, Sarah Riche Helms, was the fabric of many of a bedtime story for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Edna’s ambitions for her life pushed her to complete high school and pass the exam to receive a teaching certificate in 1930. She had the distinction of teaching for 2 years in the one-room schoolhouse. There she was paid extra for undertaking the task of lighting and keeping a fire stoked in the school’s single wood stove. Her teaching days, with her life surrounded by children would set the model for the rest of her life. In her life, she happily would undertake the role of mother, grandmother, nanny, foster mother; she was a pair of loving hands and heart ready for any child.
Her teaching days ended with her marriage to Michael F. Lambing on April 2, 1932. She often said she met Mike Lambing at church and she thought he was strange because he stared at her all through church and came down from St. Louis with her “alcoholic” cousin.” However, he managed to charm her and from early on in their courtship she knew he was the one she wanted to marry. After their marriage the young couple moved to Mike’s family home in St. Louis County and began their family. The young family survived the depression era in St. Louis by working together with the neighbors to share food, aided by the federal government through the nearby WPA project at the River Des Peres. During this time Edna made a brush with fame which she would talk about for the rest of her life. A very young Victor Mature, who later became a well-known actor, was a clerk she knew at a local grocery store.
In the early nineteen forties Edna, Mike, and their growing family would move back to rural Franklin County on a farm they purchased. The home they made there would ever after be referred too simply as “the farm.” Also during this time period Edna would lose her oldest son Donald in 1945 of a weakened heart. However, she and Mike worked on their family into the 1950’s when the youngest of their children, Thelma Kay was born. Mike and Edna had eight children in all; they are in order of their birth, Mary Ann Whitecotton, Donald Lambing, Richard Lambing, Jerry Lambing, Joseph Lambing, Vernon Lambing, David, “Mickey” Lambing, and Thelma Kay Beckett. They would also later open their home to 8 foster children, 3 of those children, Shirley, Judy, and Julia Grisham have continued throughout their life to remain a part of the Lambing family.
As the children grew up and began families of their own, Edna began a second career as a cook. She cooked for various restaurants and even had her own restaurant. The Bourbon Main Street Café. Later she would work as head cook at the Bourbon School. She and Mike would also become the caretakers at the Salvation Army’s Camp Mihaska. The camp was the perfect place for their growing army of grandchildren to romp, explore, and learn about nature. Many a grandkid’s heart shipped a beat when he or she heard they were going to spend the day at Grandma and Grandpa Lambing’s.
In the mid-nineteen seventies Mike and Edna retired and moved to Rockaway Beach, Missouri to be near their youngest daughter, Kay. Both worked occasional, part-time jobs including Edna’s long term situation as a babysitter for a young family where she earned the title nanny, a title she relished to the end of her days. Edna continued to cook, garden, read, and enjoy the company of her family. Only when Mike’s health deteriorated did they give up their home and move to be closer to their daughter. Mike died in December of 1994. Edna spent her remaining years close to her daughter and was often visited by her family. He life was one surrounded by love, laughter, friendship, and always good food.
She is survived by five sons, Richard Lambing of Sullivan, Jerry and David Lambing of Phoenix, Arizona, Joseph Lambing of Bourbon and Vernon Lambing of Hermann, Missouri, two daughters, Mary Ann Whitecotton of House Springs, Missouri and Kay Beckett of Branson, one brother, Walter Helms of Sullivan, two sisters, Ollie Kline of Sullivan, and Beulah Edwards of Manchester, Missouri. She is also survived by 90 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
A mass of Christian Burial was conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27, 2001 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with Rev. Father Ted Brunnert officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Cemetery. All arrangements were under the direction of the Eaton Funeral Home.
