Mary Agnes Burgan

Mary Agnes Burgan nee Ellison of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, September 30, 2001 at the age of 85 years.

Mary Agnes was born March 3, 1916 at Sullivan, Missouri to the late Albert and Catherine Godat Ellison. She attended and graduated from Sullivan High School and on May 4, 1963 was married to Thomas Burgan who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Burgan lived in the Pacific area for many years until the passing of her husband. For the next ten years she made her home in Springfield, Missouri and was a member of Saint Agnes Parish and the Daughters of Isabella. In August 1995 she relocated to Sullivan to be close to her family. Mary Agnes enjoyed art and shopping for pretty clothes, playing bridge and pinochle, but the greatest joy in her life came from sharing family dinners where she was known for her wrinkled green beans.

She is survived by her step-daughter, Fern Nie and husband, Juel of Pacific, a sister-in-law, Gladyne Ellison of Sullivan, two nephews, William Lemons of Reed Springs, Missouri, and Michael Ellison and wife, Jeanne of Sullivan, two nieces, Mary Ann Hubble and husband, Jerry and Ann Wessler and husband, Bob all of Sullivan, great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Burgan was preceded in death by one brother, Chester Ellison and one sister, Minnie Lemons.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated 12:00 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2001 from Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan, with Rev. Father Don Carey officiating. Interment was in Saint Anthony Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Backstoppers in memory of Mary Agnes Burgan. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Elvin E. Mesger

Elvin E. Mesger of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, October 14, 2001 at the age of 85 years.

Elvin was born on March 24, 1916 at Rosebud, Missouri to Caric and Ida (Eickhoff) Mesger. He was raised in the Rosebud area and on May 30, 1938 was married to Evelyn Wilson at Union, Missouri. He was employed for many years at the Wallis Pencil Company as a shipping clerk and later retired from there. He moved to Sullivan 1952 where has since lived. Elvin honorably served his country during W.W.II with the U.S. Navy. He earned two stars in the Philippine Liberation Campaign and four stars in the Asiatic- Pacific Theater. Elvin attained the rank of Seaman First Class and served aboard the destroyer USS Kilty. It was during his service with the Navy that he started his career in bowling. Elvin a one time held the record for 27 consecutive 300 games as certified by the American Bowling Congress and 23 consecutive 800 series. He was a member of the St. Louis Bowing Hall of Fame, the Missouri Bowlers Hall of Fame and the St. Louis Busch League. Elvin’s records are also listed in the Guiness Book of World Records.

He was a member of First Assembly of God in Sullivan.

He is survived by three sons; Kenneth Mesger and wife Rita of Milton Florida, Bruce Mesger of Houston, Texas and Kirk Mesger and wife Dianna of Bourbon, Missouri; four daughters, Carolyn Hawkins and husband Richard of Hobart, Oklahoma, Shirley Kelley and husband Raymond of Hobart, Oklahoma, Pamela Mesger of St. Louis, and Barbara Schneider and husband Jack of Littleton, Colorado, three sisters, Pearl Townsend of Sullivan, Missouri, Edith Derde of Steelville, Missouri and Bernice Hoeman of Beaufort, Missouri, 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren other relatives and friends. Along with his wife Evelyn and parents, Elvin was preceded in death by two brothers, Orville and Odis Mesger and one sister, Estella Bailey.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri with interment in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Mesger will be from 4:30 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Alma Halfaker

Alma L. Halfaker of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Thursday, October 4, 2001 at the age of 84 years.

Mrs. Halfaker was born, November 23, 1916 at Bourbon, Missouri to Amanuel and Lilly (Bales) Jones. She lived the majority of her life in the Bourbon area and was known as a woman with a sweet disposition. Her gentle nature was such that she desired not to inflict hurt on anyone. On January 24, 1932 she was married to Charles D. Halfaker, Jr. and to this marriage five children were born. Alma was a devoted mother and wife and would help anyone in need. She was the “family babysitter” and was always the center of family gatherings. Alma was known as a good cook and enjoyed providing for her family. She professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was a dedicated Christian witness. Alma attended various churches in the area and was frequently asked to sing solos. She also led an active life even in the autumn of her life and enjoyed camping and gardening with her flowers and plants.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Halfaker and wife Shirley of Leasburg, Missouri and Terry Halfaker and special friend Viola Wymer of Bourbon, Missouri, two daughters, Patricia Robinson and husband Bill of Cuba, Missouri and Janice and Clyde Cartwright of Bourbon, Missouri 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, a son, Dwight Herman Halfaker, three brothers, and four sisters.

Graveside funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2001 in Bourbon Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Alma Halfaker was held from 5 until 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon and also from 11 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Everett Ash

Floyd Everett Ash of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2001 at the age of 62 years.

Everett, as he was known by his family and friends, was born on June 15, 1939 at Huzzah, Missouri to George and Elsie (Parker) Ash. He was raised in Sullivan and attended school there. On February 14, 1959 he was married to Marilyn Bridgeman at Sullivan. Everett honorably served his country with the U.S. Army in Europe from March of 1962 to March of 1964. After his discharge, he was employed at Meramec Mining Company until its closing in the late 1970s. Everett also was employed in the construction trade for a time, but the vast majority of Sullivan knew him as the proprietor of Quality Shoe Repair. In later years, Everett was employed as a salesman for Carson’s Furniture in Union, Missouri. Everett was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed watching it on television. He was a member of New Testament Church in Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn nee Bridgeman of the family home; one son, Randy Lee Ash, also of the family home; three brothers, George Ash of Sullivan, Jerry Lee Ash of Leasburg, and Gary Ash of Bourbon; two sisters, Bernice Brewer of Bourbon and Patsy Ann Conway of Steelville, Missouri; two grandchildren, Crystal Hoerr of Union, Missouri, and Cody Utz of St. Clair; other relatives, and friends. Along with his parents, Everett was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Leon Ash and Lloyd L. Ash.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Charles Idleman officiating. Interment with military honors was in Cave Spring Cemetery.

Jessie L. Campbell

Jessie L. Campbell of Steelville, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at the age of 66 years.

Mrs. Campbell was born on October 22, 1934 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Frank and Oudia (Mitchell) Jameson. She was raised in various parts of Arkansas and Missouri and on October 20, 1956 was married to Roy S. Campbell in St. Louis, Missouri. Roy preceded Jessie in death on July 27, 1997. Jessie’s occupation in life was that of a nurse’s aide in the health care industry. She was employed at Heritage Park in Rolla, Missouri until her retirement. Jessie attended the Assembly of God in Steelville and was known as a person who everybody liked. Her hobby was collecting angels and also found pleasure in crocheting.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Diane Jameson of the state of Montana and David and Peggy Reynolds of the state of Washington, three daughters, Minnie McGonigal of Salem, Missouri, Gennette Beardsley and husband Ron of Sikeston, Missouri, and Betty Evans and husband Barry of Steelville, Missouri, one brother, Harry Jameson of the state of Texas and one sister, Nannie Waller of Sullivan, Missouri, 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

It was the desire of Mrs. Campbell that she be cremated with private family interment services in Fair View Cemetery, Rolla, Missouri. The family was assisted by the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Anna E. Seffner

Anna Eva Seffner of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, October 15, 2001 at the age of 86 years.

Mrs. Seffner was born at Renick, West Virginia on August 10, 1915 to Perry Thomas and Eluzia (Bobbitt) Lowe. She was raised in Renick and later graduated from Renick High School. Mrs. Seffner was married to Robert Thompson and to this marriage a daughter, Helen Louise was born. Mrs. Seffner was employed for a time as a supervisor at an auto parts manufacturing plant in Chicago. She later married Frank Seffner who preceded her in death. Upon failing health, she became a resident of a nursing home in Chicago for 16 years. For the past five years, she was a resident of Meramec Nursing Center under the loving care of her sister and two nieces. While active in life she enjoyed playing Bingo and associating with her many friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Helen Louise Thompson; two brothers, Clyde Lowe of Ashtabula, Ohio and Robert Lowe of Mooresberg, Tennessee; three sisters, Mildred Skelton of Jacksonville, Florida, Frances Brewer of Sullivan, Missouri and Ruth Steele of Galena, Maryland; special nieces, Carol Pennock and Shirley Gross both of Sullivan, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Seffner was preceded in death by two brothers, Beryl and Cecil Lowe and three sisters, Clara Haddock, Madline Pond and Maggie Brewer.

Private cremation services were provided under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

William Cletis Reed

William Cletis Reed of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at the age of 90 years.

Mr. Reed was born in Sparta, Illinois on June 3, 1911 to Joseph and Laura (Mattox) Reed. He was raised there where he attended school through his sophomore year. On July 21, 1932 he was married to Gladys M. Woodcock in St. Louis and to this marriage two children were born. Around 1945, the family moved to the Stanton area where Mr. Reed was employed in various trades throughout the area. His main employment was with the Mid-West Footwear Company in Sullivan as a cutter. He found great pleasure in dancing. He was well liked and was known as never knowing a stranger. Mr. Reed enjoyed all sports and watched many events on television. He also avidly followed the Sullivan High School sports teams. He enjoyed the outdoors and raising a few head of cattle but was especially fond of fox hunting. Mr. Reed was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife Gladys, one son, Cletis Reed and fiancée Deloris Trusley, both of Sullivan, one daughter, Shirley Gilbert and husband Glenn of Sullivan, 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, John Woodcock and wife Thelma of Sullivan, and a sister-in-law Ellen Thurmond and husband Leo of Sullivan, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Reed was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, Myrl, Otis, Garret, Floyd, Ethel, Esther, Ruth and Inez.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m on Friday, October 12, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Bart Hildreth officiating. Interment was in Stanton Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Cletis Reed was held from 4:30 until 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Building Fund of Grace United Methodist Church.

Charles Dott

Charles E. Dott of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at the age of 90 years.

Mr. Dott was born on November 13, 1910 in St. Louis, Missouri to Louis and Rose (Heibert) Dott. On July 4, 1936 he was married to Marie Derby and to this marriage two daughters were born. Charles was a long-time salesman for Auto-Chlor Sanitation Systems in St. Louis. He retired from there in 1956. In his retirement he loved doing odd jobs and was a drummer on weekends in a small combo. He was known as a loving, gentle and compassionate individual and was a beloved husband and father. Mr. Dott was a member of Saint Cecelia Catholic Church in St. Louis.

He is survived by his daughters, Janet Toth of St. Louis and Joann Montileone of Sullivan, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Dott donated his body to the St. Louis University School of Medicine. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Lucille Mammon

Lucille M. Mammon of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at the age of 82 years.

Lucille was born in Sullivan, Missouri on March 4, 1919 to Lou and Maude (Hamilton) Johnston. She was raised in Sullivan and graduated from the Sullivan school system. She furthered her studies and graduated from the Rolla School of Mines with a degree in education. She taught for a time at the former Pea Ridge School and later owned and operated along with her husband, Advance Engineering in St. Louis. She also served as secretary and treasurer of the board of their company and finally retired after many years of service. On June 29, 1940 she was married to William Vance at Rolla and to this marriage four children were born. Mr. Vance preceded Lucille in death in June of 1969. On December 29, 1974 she was married to Charles Mammon. He too preceded Lucille in death in November of 1995. Lucille was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Farmington, Missouri.

She is survived by three sons, William B. Vance, Jr. of the state of Florida, Terrence and Robert Vance both of the state of California, one daughter, Joan L. Tusken of the state of Colorado, 10 grandchildren, one brother, Roy Johnston, of Sullivan, Missouri, one sister, Margaret Weise, of the state of Texas, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husbands, Lucille was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Elmer Johnston and by one sister, Ethel Johnston.

Graveside funeral services were conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2001 in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery in Sullivan, with Pastor Andrew Jasper officiating. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
