Emmet E. Wood
Emmet E. Wood of Bourbon, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at the age of 77 years.
Mr. Wood was born on July 25, 1924 in Bloodland, Missouri to the late Wayne and Bessie (Gaede) Wood. As a young boy, he moved with his family to St. Louis. He continued to reside in the St. Louis area until July 1999, when he and his wife, Mildred, moved to Bourbon. Emmet worked for many years as a foreman in the steel industry and later in the construction business. He enjoyed watching boxing matches on TV, listening to country music, and cars. Emmet will be remembered and cherished as a hard-working, strong-willed man who carried a special love in his heart for his daughters.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Wood of Bourbon; two daughters, Janice Isbell and husband, Robert, of Cuba, Missouri and Pamela Sandifer and husband, Gene, of House Springs, Missouri; three grandchildren, Mathew and Rachel Isbell and Joshua Sandifer; one great-grandchild, Danielle Isbell; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wood was preceded in death by two brothers, Gus Ruhl and Frank Stewart, one sister, Daisy Grim, and one grandson, Nathan Isbell.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2001 from the Eaton Chapel in Bourbon with Reverend Leroy Bryant officiating. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to Mt. Calvary Cemetery Perpetual Care in memory of Mr. Emmet E. Wood.
Herbert Arthur Sites
Herbert Arthur Sites of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2001 at the age of 90 years.
Art was born on November 9, 1910 at Butts, Missouri to the late Benjamin Franklin and Clara La Rue Sites. He was the first in his family to graduate from high school, an accomplishment of which he was very proud. Art was employed for 38 years by the former International Shoe Company, and for twelve years by McDonnell Douglas until his retirement. Mr. Sites’ responsibility at McDonnell Douglas was making the wings for the aircraft. On October 18, 1930 Art was married to Nellie Short at Union, Missouri and to their union two children were born. Art was a devoted husband, faithful and caring. He was also a long time member of the First Assembly of God in Sullivan.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie Sites of Sullivan, one daughter-in-law, June Sites of Tucson, Arizona, two grandchildren, Douglas Sites and wife, Cindy of Tucson, Arizona, and Debbie Flattery and husband, Rev. George Flattery III, of Battle Creek, Michigan, five great- grandchildren, Charity and Jonathan Sites of Tucson, Christy, Rebecca and George Flattery IV, all of Battle Creek, one brother, Don Sites of the state of Florida, two sisters, Jackie Bell and Mildred Norris, both of Sullivan, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Sites was preceded in death by his son, Rev. Robert Sites, one daughter in infancy, Nancy Faye Sites, one granddaughter in infancy, Diane Sites, one brother, Oran Sites, and five sisters, Edna Coffman, Reba Ralph, Virginia Capps, Irene Stout, and Mickey Hulsey.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Reverend Manuel Shoults officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Rolla F. Center
Rolla F. Center of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, July 1, 2002 at the age of 94 years.
Mr. Center was born on June 5, 1908 at Esther, Missouri to Homer and Frances Calbert Center. He made his home for a time in St. Louis and later in the Brazil area near Bourbon, Missouri. He honorably served his country during W.W. II with the U.S. Army and was awarded 5 Bronze Stars for combat in the campaigns and battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. On March 20, 1943 he was married to Selma Woodcock in Leslie, Missouri. Mr. Center was known as an honest man and hard worker. His vocation in life was that of a bricklayer in the residential construction trade. He enjoyed gardening and loved the river area where he had property.
He is survived by his wife Selma of the family home, two sons, Gene Center and wife Mary Ann of Sullivan and Jack Center and wife Janice of Sullivan, one daughter, Joyce Ritchey and husband Ron of Rolla, Missouri, 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2002 from Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Stanton Cemetery. Arrangements were under the care of the Hassebroek Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Walter Pfautsch
Walter J. Pfautsch of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Monday, October 15, 2001 at the age of 87 years.
Walter was born at Washington, Missouri on December 22, 1913 to Walter A. and Frida (Puchta) Pfautsch. He was raised in Washington and later graduated from high school there. Walter later graduated from Elgin’s Watchmaker’s College in Elgin, Illinois. In 1949, he came to Sullivan where he became self-employed as a jeweler and operated the Pfautsch Jewelry Store until his retirement in 1979. On March 27, 1937 he was married to Helen Thudium and to this marriage two children were born. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sullivan where he held the offices of Elder and Deacon. Walter was a 52 year member of the Sullivan Rotary Club and a founder and charter member of the Sullivan Country Club. He also enjoyed bowling and was secretary of the bowling league for over 40 years. Because of his dedication to the league, he was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame in Washington. Walter also held membership in the Sullivan Masonic Lodge No. 69 A.F. & A.M. Walter was a reserved individual who enjoyed having fun and had a dry sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife Helen of the family home; one son, Don Pfautsch and wife Linda of Richardson, Texas; one daughter Kristine Wessler and husband Jim of Yorktown, Virginia; one brother Lloyd Pfautsch and wife Edie of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Marian Lefmann and husband Wil of Washington, Missouri, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2001 from the First Presbyterian Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Roy Pfautch officiating. Interment was in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Washington, Missouri. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Building Fund of the First Presbyterian Church are preferred.
Elsie Figone
Elsie Figone of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, October 15, 2001 at the age of 94 years.
Elsie was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 9, 1907 to Fred and Catherine (Strothcamp) Reitz. At the age of ten years, she moved to the Elmont, Missouri area near Sullivan. Her first job was that of a stitcher at the former International Shoe Company. Living in the Elmont area, she would ride her horse to work at the factory in Sullivan and then again back home after her shift had ended. In 1926 Elsie was united in marriage to Joe Carey and to this union two children were born; Kitty and Jerry. Elsie and Joe owned and operated a farm near Elmont. She loved telling stories of her days of farm life including; night hunting, trapping, gardening, canning, country parties and dances and raising her children in the happy farm life of yesteryear. In 1946 Elsie was united in marriage to John Figone and to this union one daughter was born; Lolita Marie. Elsie and John owned and operated Figones RCA with the business beginning in their home on 303 Pine Street. It was in this home that they built the first television set in Sullivan. Saturday night found the neighborhood bringing their lawn chairs and being entertained by viewing the TV through the Figone home’s front window. Elsie remained a salesperson n the family business – now known as Jerry’s RCA until her mid 80’s. Her family meant everything to her and was close to each and every one of her children and many grandchildren. She was known to be the “life of the party” and because she loved people she never knew a stranger. Elsie was a unique individual with a strong personality and disposition. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends and found great pleasure in dancing. Elsie was a member of Saint Anthony Parish in Sullivan and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Carey and wife, Viva Lou, of Sullivan; two daughters, Kitty Carey Chapman and Lolita Figone Cox and husband, Floyd, all of Sullivan; nine grandchildren, Cathy Bryan, Debbie Senters, Wendy Head, Alan Carey, Lisa Cain, Randy Carey, Greg Cox, Tammy Rohrer and Elizabeth Cox; twenty-two great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, other relatives, and many friends. Elsie was preceded in death by three brothers, Ben, Harry and Roy Reitz and by one sister, Lillian Carey and a son-in-law, John Chapman.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2001 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Father Don Carey officiating. Interment was in the St. Anthony Parish Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Mary Richardson
Mary E. Richardson of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Monday, October 15, 2001 at the age of 87 years.
Mary was born on May 19, 1914 at Anthonies Mill, Missouri to the late John Lee and Effie (Bouse) Isgrigs. In 1931 she was joined in marriage to Lytle Marion Summers, and to this union three children were born. In 1947 Mr. Summers preceded Mary in death. In 1948 she was joined in marriage to Johnie Richardson, and to this union two children were born. Mary and Johnie lived in Bourbon, Missouri until their health failed, and then moved to the Meramec Nursing Center in Sullivan. Mary professed her faith in Christ, and was a faithful witness to all around her. She loved her home, and was a very caring person, especially providing much care and concern for her husband, Johnie. In her younger years, she worked at the Paramount Cap Factory in Bourbon, Missouri.
She is survived by her husband, Johnie C. Richardson of Sullivan; two sons, Harold Summers of Sullivan and Rick Richardson of Bourbon, Missouri; two daughters, Betty Ivie and husband, Marvin, of Cuba, Missouri and Sue Bunton of Bourbon, Missouri; one step-son, Leroy Richardson and wife, Bonnie, of St. Peters, Missouri, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to those previously mentioned, Mary was preceded in death by a son, William Summers, a step-son, James Richardson, three brothers, Jasper Isgrigs and his wife, Vallie, Luther Isgrigs and Harry Isgrigs, four half-brothers, Alphie and Archie Coffman, and Jesse and Jack Summers, and one sister, Lucy Merritt and her husband, Raymond.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2001 from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with Pastor Marvin Ivie officiating. Interment was in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri.
Esther Waller
Esther Matthews Waller of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at the age of 79 years.
Esther was born at Hermann, Missouri on December 12, 1921 to Don B. and Esther (Lemmel) Matthews. Shortly after, the Matthews family moved to Sullivan where her father accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools. It was in the first grade that Esther met John Waller. Esther later graduated from Sullivan and attended Southwest Missouri State University where she graduated with a degree in Education and Applied Music. Esther was also the 1942 May Queen at SMSU. She later taught music at Guesse School, Aurora High School, school in Atlanta, Georgia and later Webster Groves for a total of eight years. On November 24, 1944 she was married to John W. Waller in Atlanta, Georgia at Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Sullivan where John took up his law practice and Esther was his secretary. Upon the arrival of their first son, Scott, Esther quit her job as secretary and devoted her time to her family. Esther would quietly help people in need with clothing and assistance with utility bills and such. She never asked for repayment – only that the ones she would help would in turn help someone else. Esther never sought recognition for her accomplishments and never asked for help in her tasks. She enjoyed helping John on the farm, working the cattle and horses. She was an accomplished horse person and found pleasure in riding. She loved the outdoors and all of nature. She was a member of the Sullivan Garden Club and was responsible for planting many trees around the Sullivan area. She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. Esther was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sullivan where she was organist for over 51 years. She rarely missed a Sunday and would play for virtually all weddings and funerals at the church. Esther never accepted an honorarium and would always give the stipend to the church or Emergency Assistance Fund.
She is survived by her husband John of the family home, two sons Scott Waller and wife Patty of Sullivan and Grant Waller and wife Laura of Bourbon, Missouri; one daughter, Carol Umfress and husband Don of Stanton, Missouri; two sisters, June Moss of Sullivan and Emma Polish of Tucson, Arizona; a special care giver, Paula Ray of Sullivan, 5 grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Esther was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Don B. Matthews.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2001 from the First Presbyterian Church in Sullivan with Mr. Ron Woodland officiating. Interment was in Anthonies Mill Cemetery, Bourbon, Missouri. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri The family suggests memorials to the Sullivan Emergency Relief Fund.
Freda Brown
Freda F. Brown of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at he home on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at the age of 81 years.
Mrs. Brown was born on March 26, 1920 at Anthonies Mill, near Bourbon, Missouri to Orville and Sadie (Summers) Kimberlin. On September 20, 1941 she was married to Max L. Brown at Steelville, Missouri and to this union three children were born. Mrs. Brown had lived in the Sikeston, Missouri area for a time. However she has lived in the Sullivan area the past several years. Her husband, Max was the former Water Commissioner for the City of Sullivan.
Mrs. Brown is survived by a daughter, Brenda, Kern of Middletown, Missouri; one brother, Morris Kimberlin of Bourbon, Missouri; one sister, Fern Richards of Springfield, Missouri, 3 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband Max, two sons, Byron and Boyd Brown, three brothers, Ernest, Rush and John Kimberlin, and by two sisters, Hallie Collins, and Alma Summers.
Graveside funeral services were conducted on Saturday, October 20, 2001 in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Carrie L. Ludwig
Carrie L. Ludwig of Sullivan, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2001 at the age of 83 years.
Carrie was the eldest of thirteen children and was born on June 22, 1918 to the late Pete and Myrtle (Henson) Counts in Shannon County, Arkansas. She attended school in Arkansas and on May 19, 1957 was married to Raymond Ludwig at Freeport, Illinois. In 1967 they made their home in Sullivan where she remained until her passing. Mr. Ludwig preceded her in death on April 4, 2001. Carrie was a quiet person, who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved to play Bingo until ill health forced her to give it up. Carrie was a member of the Russell Schmidt V. F. W. Post # 3987 Ladies Auxiliary for 25 years and was of the Baptist faith. She will be fondly remembered by her family and many friends.
She is survived by two sons, David Ludwig of Sullivan, Daniel Ludwig and wife, Anita of London, Kentucky, one daughter, Claudine Wriley of Sullivan, two brothers, Walter Counts of Sullivan, and Earl Thomas of the state of Georgia, three sisters, Lucy Tuttle of Sullivan, Marie Butler of Eminence, Missouri, Glenna Counts of St. James, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Carrie was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Jenkins, one daughter, Levon Lubbers, six brothers, A.J., Raymond, Roy and Daniel Counts, Henry and Cecil Thomas, one sister, Elsie Counts, and two grandchildren, Larry Miller and Debbie Utt.
Funeral services were conducted 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2001 from the chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, with Rev. Jim Scott officiating. Interment was in National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
