Rose C. Meiller
Rose Celeste Meiller of Sullivan, Missouri formerly of Granite City, Illinois passed away Friday, December 13, 2002 at the age of 88 years.
Rose was born in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Louis E. and Anna E. (Schmidt) Griemel. She grew up and attended school in the St. Louis area. On March 21, 1934 she was married to Arthur Jackson, who preceded her in death. On September 12, 1959 Rose was married to Roland Meiller. For many years they made their home in Granite City, Illinois. Mr. Meiller passed away in October 1992. Rose was employed for 17 years by Wool Worth as a supervisor. In her free time she enjoyed crocheting and crafts. Rose was described as a homebody and a wonderful cook. She was baptized and raised in the Catholic faith.
She is survived by one son, Arthur Jackson and wife, Frankie of Wright City, Missouri, three daughters, Patricia Knight and husband, Ronald of Cuba, Missouri, Bobbi Gorman and husband, Fred of Granite City, Illinois, Colleen Brooks and husband, Dane of Sullivan, one brother, Robert Griemel of St. Clair, one sister, Loretta Dillard of St. Louis, twelve grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Meiller was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Jackson, three brothers, Bernard, Anthony and Henry Griemel, one sister, Marie Glatz and one grandson, John Michael Jackson in infancy.
Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 16, 2002 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri with Rev. Father Ted Brunnert officiating. Interment was in National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.
Jeffrey Gawer
Jeffrey G. Gawer of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, December 8, 2002 at the age of 23 years.
Jeffrey was born at Sullivan, Missouri on February 26, 1979 and had lived his entire life in the Sullivan area. He attended Sullivan High School and later became a carpenter in St. Louis through the Carpenters Local # . He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Jeffrey was particularly fond of spending time with his son Austin and friends Paco, Steve, Andy and Tim. He was known as a loving family man who was a hard worker. Jeffrey was also a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Sullivan.
He is survived by his son, Austin Gawer, his mother, Gayle Gawer both of Sullivan, his father, Glenn Gawer of Owensville, Missouri, one brother, Matthew Gawer of St. Peter’s, Missouri, one sister, Alison Tourville and husband, Bryan of Sullivan, dear nephews, Bradley Tourville and Noah Gawer of Sullivan, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2002 from Saint Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Sullivan. Visitation for Jeffrey Gawer will be from 4:30 – 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Austin Gawer Trust Fund in care of the Bank of Sullivan.
Lillian Strain
Lillian L. Strain of O’Fallon, Missouri passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at the age of 95 years.
Lily, as she was known by family and friends was born April 19, 1907 to the late George and Lydia Laura (Havener) Farrell at Sullivan, Missouri. On May 23, 1928 Lily was married to Roy R. Strain. At the beginning of their marriage they made their home in the Sullivan area, where Lily was first employed in the shoe industry and later as a partner to her husband in the egg business. They then moved to Kirkwood, Missouri, where Lily and Roy began their family. For several years Lily was a homemaker, spending her time raising her family. She was an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed sewing for her children. Lily’s last employment outside the home was as a seamstress for the former Jack Diamond Drapery Service. She was a member of the St. Louis Church in O’Fallon, Missouri. Mrs. Strain was a devoted wife, mother, and grandparent. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends, who described her as a kind and gracious lady.
She is survived by one son, John Strain and wife, Anna Mae of Fairview Heights, Illinois, two daughters, Melba Haney and husband, Joseph of O’Fallon, Missouri, Alvera Wolf of Regina, SK, Canada, one sister, Vera Jackson of South St. Louis, 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Strain on December 21, 1973, one brother, Everett Farrell, and two sisters, Gertie Cunio and Agnes Schmidt.
Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2002 from the chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Mr. Andrew Snoke and Mr. Jerry Cornell officiating. Interment was in Schmidt Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may to given to Global Missions in memory of Mrs. Lillian Strain. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Dorothy Merritt
Dorothy G. Merritt of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2002 at the age of 93 years.
Mrs. Merritt was born February 10, 1909 at Creve Coeur, Missouri to Dr. William and Nellie (Hogan) Ham. In November of 1927 she was united in marriage to William J. Vertrees and to this union three children were born. For a time she was employed as an L.P.N. in the Health Care field. She was also active in Cub Scouts and was a Den Mother for many years. After moving to the Sullivan area in the early 1970’s her husband William passed away after 41 years of marriage. In 1975 she was married to Ted Merritt who preceded her in death in less than one year. She was a dedicated member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan where she was active in the United Methodist Women’s Association and quilter’s group. Her church and family were very dear to her and she also found pleasure in gardening.
She is survived by one daughter, Geraldine Thodesen and husband Eddie of Cincinnati, Ohio, one son Dennis Vertrees and wife Jodeane of St. Charles, Missouri, 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husbands, Mrs. Merritt was preceded in death by a son Bill Vertrees, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
Memorial funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 from Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Dr. Bart Hildreth officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Lois Rose Nehls
Lois Rose Nehls of Sullivan passed away Sunday, October 27, 2002 at the age of 85 years.
Lois was born July 11, 1917 to the late Peter and Sophia (Volbrecht) Schrieber in Floyd County, Iowa. As a child she made her home in the state of Minnesota later returning to Iowa. In 1970 Lois was married to Harold Nehls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mrs. Nehls was employed for several years as a housekeeper in the nursing home industry. Lois moved to the Sullivan area in 1979. She enjoyed fishing in her spare time and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Nehls was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan.
She is survived by four sons, Fred Schmidtke and wife, June of Sullivan, Dale Schmidtke and wife, May, Roy Schmidtke of Sullivan, David Schmidtke, two daughters, Evelyn Theilen of Bourbon, and Carol Tipp of Dallas, Texas, one sister in law, Dorothy Schreiber of Osseo, Minnisota, twenty five grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Mrs. Nehls was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Nehls, two daughters, Virginia Rhoades and Irene Schmidtke in infancy, four brothers, Elmer, Aldon, Gordon and William Schrieber, and two sisters, Doris Boden and Norma Mauch.
Graveside services were conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2002 from Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in Charles City, Iowa. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Oscar A. Glaser
Oscar A. Glaser of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at the age of 92 years.
Mr. Glaser was born October 29, 1910 at Sullivan, Missouri to Arthur and Julia (Hoffman) Glaser. He was a life-long resident of the Sullivan and was a well known dairy farmer through out the area. On April 15, 1946 he was united in marriage to Regina Betke and Bourbon, Missouri and to this union five children were born. Mr. Glaser was a member and Past Noble Grand of Oddfellows Lodge #156 of Sullivan, member and Past Patriarch of Sullivan Encampment #171, Trustee of Oddfellows Lodge #156 and I.O.O.F. Cemetery of Sullivan, and member of Sullivan Rebekah Lodge #319. In September of this year, Mr. Glaser was baptized into the Lutheran faith and became a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.
He is survived by three sons, John Glaser of Bourbon, Missouri, Norman and August Glaser both of Sullivan, two daughters, Linda James and husband Marshall of Farmington, Missouri and Theresa Houser and husband Bill of Sullivan, two sisters, Wilma Bremer of St. Louis, Missouri and Bernice Dysart of Columbia, Missouri, three grandchildren, Micah and Mark Houser, and Jo Anne Mabrey, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2002 from St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church with entombment in the I.O.O.F. Mausoleum. Visitation for Mr. Oscar Glaser will be from 4:30 until 9 p.m. on Friday from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan and Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of service at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Memorial services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening under the direction of Sullivan Oddfellows Lodge #156. Those who desire may make memorials to the American Cancer Society in the name of Oscar Glaser.
Michael R. Turner
Michael R. Turner of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2002 at the age of 49 years.
Mike, as he was known by his family and friends, was born January 18, 1953 at Albany, Oregon to Donald and Doris (Holland) Turner. He was raised in Roseau, Minnesota until the age of 11 when the family then moved to California. On July 20, 1974 he was married to Deborah DeLuca at St. James, Missouri and to this union two children were born. Mike was employed for a time by Woodall Truck Repair and was currently self-employed as an auto mechanic. In his earlier years in Sullivan, Mike was employed as a patrolman with the Sullivan Police Department and, for a time, was Chief of the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Sullivan Oddfellows Lodge #156, Masonic Lodge #69 A.F. & A.M. of Sullivan and Order of Eastern Star Sullivan Chapter #109.
He is survived by his wife Debbie, of the family home, one son Marko Turner of Sullivan and a daughter Melinda Armstrong and husband Chris of Springfield, Missouri, his parents Doris and Donald Turner of Anaheim, California, a brother, Myles Turner of the State of California and a sister, Kim Ransom of Murietta, California, five grandchildren, Dalton, Devan and Demi Turner, Draven and Trinity Armstrong, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mike was preceded in death by a brother Marko Turner.
Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Paul Leasor officiating. Cremation followed the services. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Andrew N. Benage
Andrew N. Benage of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at the age of 56 years.
Mr. Benage was born on June 23, 1946 at Iberia, Missouri to Norman W. and Mary Jane (Mahoney) Benage. He was raised in the Iberia area through High School and then attended the University of Missouri at Columbia. He graduated from there with a degree in Anthropology and went on to earn his Masters Degree in Education at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. Mr. Benage was a teacher and counselor at Sullivan High School and retired from there after 25 years. His passion and hobby was computers and in his retirement years, taught computer science at East Central College. On February 3, 1968 he was married to Judith Ann Brandt at Gerald, Missouri and to this union three children were born. Mr. Benage was known as a kind and pleasant individual who enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Iberia, Missouri and attended Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Benage of Sullivan, one son, Michael Benage and wife, Kimberly of Chicago, Illinois, two daughters, Michelle Benage of Denver, Colorado, Heather Schatzl and husband, Chris of Sullivan, one brother-in-law, Dean Brandt and wife, Lori of Sullivan, two sisters-in-law, Sharon Dace and husband, Vernon and Nancy Lattimore and husband, Jerry all of Sullivan, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted11:00 a.m. Friday, November 22, 2002 from Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan. Visitation for Mr. Andrew N. Benage will be from 4:30 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, at the Eaton Funeral Home. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.
Genevie Simmons
Genevie O. Simmons of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Friday, November 15, 2002 at the age of 73 years.
Mrs. Simmons was born at Sullivan, Missouri on April 26, 1929 to Richard McKinley and Mary Agnes (Hayes) Witt. On June 25, 1947 she was married to Gilbert E. Simmons and to this marriage five children were born. She was retired from the former PACO Plant in Sullivan and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bourbon. Genevie enjoyed gardening and would can and make various jellies and jams. She lived for her children and was a happy-go-lucky type of person.
She is survived by two sons, Carl Simmons and wife Peggy of Bourbon and Danny Simmons and wife Carol of Sullivan, three daughters, Jean Fife and husband Tom of Leasburg, Diann Crump and husband Ward, Connie Shelton and husband Duane, all of Bourbon, Missouri, two brothers, Charlie and Kenny Witt both of Sullivan, two sisters, Margie Payne of Owensville and Mariam Loverick of Union, Missouri, nine grandchildren, T.J. Fife, Dena Carroll, Caren Cain, Jeff Simmons, Jennifer Harmon, Chris Crump, Derrick Martin, Veronica and Lucas Shelton 8 great-grandchildren, Shad Cain, Jaida Cain, Kamron Simmons, Adam Bass, Lexi Fletcher, Holden Carroll, Kyler Crump and Sydney Harmon, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 18, 2002 from the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Devin Haus officiating. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery.
