Buermann, Maggie Thurmond
Maggie Ellen Doyle was born to Henry L. (Bud) Doyle and Maggie Rock Doyle at their home in rural Franklin County on August 24, 1907 and passed into eternal rest at the Meramec Nursing Center on February 23, 2008 at the age of 100 years, 5 months and 27 days.
On April 20, 1924 she was married to Alvin Thurmond and to this union four children were born, Viola Bryant, Myrl Bledsoe, Raymond Thurmond and Dale Thurmond.
She was widowed in 1969 and in 1973 married Joshua (Joe) Buermann, who preceded her in death in 1975. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers Joseph, Charles and Meredith Doyle and sisters Susan Stout, Mae Campbell, Pearl Bandy, Mildren Hartman and Fern Priest, both sons, daughter-in-law Estalee (Sis) Thurmond and great grandchild, Michael Krygiel. She is survived by her daughters, sons-in-law Tom Bryant and Fred Bledsoe, daughter-in-law Betty Bierman, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, many special nieces and nephews and a host of friends, all of whom will miss her greatly.
She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church and donated countless hours to the Pink Lady program at the hospital as long as physically able.
A memorial service was held on March 1, 2008 under the direction of Eaton Funeral Home with Pastor Zac Sturm conducting the service and The Rev. Dr. Carol Wesley assisting. A private burial of her ashes will be held later.
Born in an era and environment in which women were expected only to be wives and mothers she embraced her role as both with her whole heart, unconditional love and many personal sacrifices known only to her. After her children matured and no longer needed her total care, she “adopted” several elderly friends and neighbors for whom she provided transportation, many meals, ran errands and did laundry if the need arose. She loved bread baking and many of you will recall having a freshly-baked loaf delivered to your door from time to time.
She suffered adversities that would have daunted or embittered most people by meeting them head on with the attitude it was not what she would have chosen, but cope and go forward. Despite outliving her entire family, two husbands, two sons, losing every possession in a house fire in the depths of the Great Depression, surviving breast cancer, enduring a leg amputation in her 80's, and ending her life in such a frail condition she needed to be dressed, bathed, and at times, fed, she maintained to the very end that she had lived such a wonderful life and tomorrow would be a better day.
Hers truly was a wonderful life as a shining example for all us to follow.
