Guiney, Lucille Adams

Lucille nee Adams Guiney passed away on May 12, 2009 at the age of 101 years. She was born in the Forest Hill area of Bourbon on September 19, 1907 in the log home built in 1852 by her grandparents, Abraham and Martha Avery Knight. She spent her childhood on the farm in Forest Hill, the youngest of the four sons and three daughters of Frank and Laura Knight Adams. She attended the Forest Hill School, built on land donated by her grandfather, Abraham. She was heartbroken when told there was no money for her to attend high school.

As a young woman she moved to St. Louis with her sister, Winnie Adams Jackson and nieces Lois and Sue Jackson. Her life in St. Louis was full with an active social life and employment as a nanny for the Lambert family and as a restaurant hostess, but with sorrow as well as she cared for her sister, Hazel, until her death from ALS.

In her late forties she met and married Hughie Guiney, a Navy veteran and plumber for the railroad. Lucille became an active volunteer at the veteran's hospital during this time, reading to blind soldiers. They had a lovely apartment in the city near Shaw's Garden and traveled nearly every weekend to the Forest Hill home, then being farmed by her brothers, Ben and Kermit Adams. After Hughie's retirement they spent most of their time at the farm, where she was active with the Crawford County historical society, the garden club and as a hospital volunteer.

By the end of the 1980's Lucille had lost Hughie and her brothers. She continued to live in the family home independently until her late nineties, devoting herself to the care and protection of the Century Farm and her many volunteer animals, at one point providing food and milk to more than thirty homeless cats. The beautiful garden flowers of the farm, some of which had been planted by her grandmother, and the birds and other wildlife of the forest
brought her the most joy in her later years. She was a great reader and writer, leaving a large collection of the poems she has written over the years. We are thankful that her mind remained clear and she was able to relate to the four generations behind her the stories of her life and the proud history of her family.

She was preceded in death by her nieces, Lois Seacat and Sue Ehrsam, and is survived by her great nieces and nephews including Cathy Hotz and Alan of Bourbon, Laura Hunter and Richard of Rolla, Dr. Margery Ross and Danny of New Jersey, Jeff Ehrsam and Kim, Steve, and Chris Ehrsam of San Diego. Great-great nieces and nephews include Michael Hunter and Sheila of Atlanta, Alison Hunter of Benicia, California, Albert and Joe Hotz of Bourbon, Ben and Max Ross of New Jersey and Summer, Meagan, Cole and Dylan Ehrsam of San Diego, as well as her very special great-great-great niece Miriam Hunter of Atlanta. She is also survived by her step children John Guiney and Ann and Suzanne Clear of New Mexico.

Her ability to live autonomously at the farm would not have been possible without the devotion of George Valley and the support of her many special friends in the community. Her last years were spent happily at the Autumn Age apartments in Bourbon and Dunsford Court assisted living in Sullivan.

A memorial service was held for Lucille on Saturday, May 23 at 11:00 am at the Crossroads Baptist Church with burial at the Crossroads Cemetery. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Tri-county Humane Society in St. James.
