Harold Gilliam
Harold L. Gilliam of Stanton passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2000 at the age of 81 years.
Harold was born May 5, 1918 to the late Fred and Delpha (Lefler) Gilliam at Huzzah, Missouri. He was baptized as a young man. Later in his life he honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II with the 631st Field Artillery Battalion where he was awarded Five Bronze Stars. On January 17, 1946 Harold was married to Helga McGuffin at St. Louis, Missouri, and three children were born to this marriage. The family moved to Spokane, Washington where Mr. Gilliam was employed by Kaiser Aluminum on the fireline for 30 years. After retirement they made their home in the Stanton area where Harold enjoyed fishing and watching baseball.
He is survived by his wife, Helga Gilliam of Stanton, two sons, Fred Gilliam and wife, Pat, of Dothan, Alabama, Bruce Gilliam and wife, Kathy, of Vibernum, Missouri, one daughter, Gale Lawson and husband, Buddy, of Cook Stantion, Missouri, one sister, Frances Alvina Halmich of Stanton, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents Mr. Gilliam was preceded in death by one brother, Beauford Gilliam.
Memorial services were held privately at the family home in Stanton, Missouri.
Donald C. Henke, Sr.
Donald C. Henke, Sr. of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Saturday, April 22, 2000 at the age of 65 years.
Mr. Henke was born September 19, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Adolph and Louise (Schleiger) Henke. He was raised in the St. Louis area, and was employed many years as a welder at Kirkwood Fabrication. He later retired to Sullivan where he worked part-time at the Sullivan Elementary School until ill health caused his permanent retirement. Seventeen years ago he was baptized into the Baptist faith at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
He is survived by four sons, Donald Henke, Jr. and wife, Diane, Eric Henke and wife, Staci, and Scott Henke and wife, Angie, all of Sullivan, and Barry Henke of St. Peters, Missouri; two daughters, Diane Henke of Sullivan and Kimmie Henke of Londell, Missouri; two brothers, Robert Henke of St. Louis and Junior Henke of High Ridge, Missouri; seven grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Dane Keely officiating. Interment was in Reedville Cemetery.
Jean McClintinck
Jean M. McClintinck of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Monday, April 24, 2000 at the age of 85 years.
Mrs. McClintick was born February 26, 1915 in Bourbon, Missouri to the late Daniel and Wilhelmina (Schulte) Spicer. She was a life-long resident of Bourbon and worked at Paramount Headwear Company for many years. On May 3, 1933 she was married to Virgil McClintick who preceded her in death in 1986. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Bourbon and helped many years in the church kitchen as well as in the Bourbon Community Center. Mrs. McClintick was a kind and loving, very helpful Christian lady who will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by one son, Edward McClintick of Santa Rosa, California, two daughters, Patsy Ray of Sullivan and Ginger (Neff) Bobbitt of Richwoods, Missouri, 10 grandchildren, John, Jim and Denelle McClintick, Deborah Yeakey, Leslie Michels, Charles and Sharon Ray, Jason, Clayton and Ben Neff, 6 great-grandchildren, Kolinda and Shiloh Ray, Adam and Marrisa Neff, Jordan Michels and Michelle Miller, other relatives and friends. Mrs. McClintick was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy McClintick, two sisters, Jessie Hinch and Grace Haase and by six brothers, Daniel, George, Floyd, Myron, Roland and Elmer Spicer.
Funeral services were conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with Pastor Mike King officiating. Interment was in Bourbon Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Jean McClintick was held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon.
Sylvia "Peggy" Long
Sylvia “Peggy” Long of Sullivan passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2000 at the age of 86 years.
“Peggy,” as she was fondly known to her family and friends, was born on November 11, 1913 in Lecoma, Missouri to the late Jessie Calvin and Myrtle Alice (Miller) Curtis. Shortly thereafter the family moved to central Illinois where “Peggy” was raised. On October 9, 1954 she was united in marriage to Gilbert Leroy Long in St. Louis. Her primary occupation throughout her life was that of a cook for various restaurants spanning over forty years. “Peggy” enjoyed canning and gardening. She also found pleasure in flowers, chickens, and dogs. Those who knew her best describe her as a happy person who was quick to share what she had with others.
She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Long, of Sullivan; one brother, Carl Curtis and wife, Helen, of Troy, Missouri; two sisters, Mary Bukant of Divernon, Illinois and Flossie Law and husband, Nylan, of O’Fallon, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, “Peggy” was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Ora, Louie, and John Curtis, and two sisters, Anna Fulsom and Elsie Lamb.
A Graveside Funeral Service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2000 from the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery in Sullivan with Brother Carl Curtis officiating. If desired, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Sylvia “Peggy” Long. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Verna Marie Bray
Verna Marie Bray, wife of the late Andrew C. Bray, and daughter of the late Wallace and Stella (Boyer) Bourisaw, passed away Monday, May 1, 2000 at the age of 74 years.
Mrs. Bray was born March 5, 1926 at Old Mines, Missouri, and was raised in that area as a child. On June 29, 1946 she was married to Andrew C. Bray, and to this union two children were born. In 1980 she came to Sullivan to make her home. Verna’s primary work in life was serving her family as a homemaker. She was a member of True Vine Baptist Church of Sullivan. She loved to garden and grow roses. Verna also enjoyed canning and fishing.
She is survived by her daughter, Wanda Counts, of Sullivan; two sisters, Norma Lands of Cahokia, Illinois and Dorothy Bourisaw of Sullivan; four grandchildren, Debbie Baker and husband, Carl, and Denise, Douglas and Darren Counts; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Brittany Keeven, Brandon Baker, and Andrew Counts; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Verna was preceded in death by her son, Gerald Lee Bray.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2000 in Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Bellevelle, Illinois with Pastor Lindell Vawter officiating. Mrs. Bray lay in state Wednesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Scott Preston Sobolewski
Scott Preston Sobolewski, was born an Army Brat on July 15, 1978 in Winona, Minnesota. He passed away May 4, 2000 at Fort Hood, Texas at the age of 21 years. He attended school in Sullivan, Missouri, starting with Little Friends Preschool and graduated from High School in 1997. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan. Scott joined the United State Army in 1998. After completing basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Scott proudly served for a year in Korea with his father’s old unit, the 7th Calvary, 2nd Infantry Division. He was then stationed in Fort Hood, Texas with another of his father’s old units, the 1st Battalion, 12th Calvary. He has attained the rank of Corporal and was a Tank Gunner.
Scott is survived by his parents, Robert and Sarah (Harris) Sobolewski of Sullivan, his grandmother, Mary Sobolewski of Washington, D.C., sisters, Shelly Martin and husband Chad of Columbia, Missouri, Rebecca Epler and husband Scott of New Albany, Pennsylvania, and Jennifer Robbins of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, two nephews, Christopher and Johnathan Dibben and two nieces, Chelsea and Katilyn Epler. Scott was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Sobolewski and maternal grandparents, Melvin and Viola Harris.
Funeral services, with full military honors, were conducted 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Robert Gifford officiating. Interment was in National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
Christine Brodeur
Christine Brodeur of Florissant, Missouri formerly of Sullivan, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2000 at the age of 94 years.
Mrs. Brodeur was born September 25, 1905 at St. Libory, Illinois. She was raised in that area on the family farm and attended school there until the eight grade. On July 30, 1927 she was married to Raymond J. Brodeur and to this marriage five children were born. Mrs. Brodeur was employed for a time with various Department Stores in the St. Louis area but the majority of the time she devoted herself to her family. She enjoyed gardening and was an excellent cook. Mrs. Brodeur was also a member of Saint Anthony Parish of Sullivan.
Mrs. Brodeur is survived by three sons, Raymond, David and Frank Brodeur, two daughters, Louise Anderson and Joyce Hermann, one sister, 23 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Her husband Raymond preceded her in death as did five other brothers and sisters, Martin, Louise, Lizzie, Gussie and Edmond.
A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2000 from Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Father Theodore Brunnert officiating. Interment was Saint Anthony Parish Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Earlean K. Parsel
Earlean K. Parsel of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Sullivan, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2000 at the age of 71 years.
Mrs. Parsel was born on November 2, 1928 in the Sullivan area to the late Edward and Tella (Mitchell) Johnson. She was raised in the Sullivan/Japan/Bourbon area. After graduating from high school, she worked for a few years as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. On October 4, 1947 she was married to Louis Edward Parsel in St. Louis, Missouri and to this union four children were born. Mrs. Parsel’s primary vocation throughout her adult life was that of a devoted wife, loving mother, and homemaker. She especially enjoyed bowling, interior decorating, and traveling. As a young girl, she was baptized as a member of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by three sons, Brian Parsel of Columbia, Missouri, Emmett Parsel of Sparta, Missouri, and Keith Parsel and wife, Cindy, of Nixa, Missouri; one daughter, Sherry Ittak of St. Louis, Missouri; two sisters, Dorcie Voss of Hillsboro, Missouri, and Ellen Brune and husband, Elmer, of Sullivan; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Parsel was preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Riiff.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Lockhart Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Earlean K. Parsel was held from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2000 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Annie L. Pennock
Annie L. Pennock of Sullivan passed away Thursday, May 18, 2000 at the age of 88 years.
Mrs. Pennock was born on November 28, 1911 in Fall City, Nebraska to the late Charles and Mary (Evans) Mason. As a young girl, she moved to Kennebec, South Dakota, and went on to graduate from high school there at the top of her class with honors. Early in life she developed an excellent work ethic. All through high school she lived above a local restaurant, and worked there for room, board, and school tuition. On January 1, 1932 she was married to Charles Hollis Pennock in San Diego, California, and to this union four sons were born. Mrs. Pennock’s primary vocation throughout her adult life was that of a devoted wife, loving mother, and homemaker. She also had a passion for gardening. Those who knew her best describe her as a sweet, energetic woman who lived for her family and her garden, but was also very independent. Mrs. Pennock was known and respected as a charter member of the New Testament Baptist Church in Sullivan.
She is survived by three sons, Russell Pennock of Kewanee, Illinois, Rolan Pennock and wife, Hazel, of Peoria, Illinois, and Richard Pennock and wife, Margie, of Sullivan; one sister, Mary Mauer of Dutton, Montana, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Pennock was preceded in death by one son, William Alexander Pennock.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2000 from the New Testament Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastor David Fortner officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery. If desired, donations may be given to the Salvation Army in memory of Mrs. Annie L. Pennock. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
Helen B. Eckenfels
Helen B. Eckenfels of Warsaw, Missouri, formerly of Sullivan, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2000 at the age of 83 years.
Mrs. Eckenfels was born on December 24, 1916 in Foristell, Missouri to the late Eugene and Stella (Bollegar) Turton. She was raised and attended school in the Foristell area. On February 7, 1938 she was united in marriage to Harry T. Eckenfels in St. Louis, Missouri. After residing in St. Louis for approximately 35 years, Harry and Helen moved to Sullivan in 1973. Helen’s primary vocation throughout her adult life was that of a devoted wife, loving mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and participating in many church activities. She was a longtime member of the Jennings Christian Church, and well known as a loving Christian lady.
She is survived by her husband, Harry Eckenfels; one daughter-in-law, Connie Mills and husband, David, of Cole Camp, Missouri; one granddaughter, Cheri Eckenfels of Cole Camp, Missouri; one sister, Mary Haley of Greenville, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Eugene Eckenfels, in 1991.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Minister Jeff Bent officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Normandy, Missouri. If desired, donations may be made to the Sullivan Christian Church in memory of Helen B. Eckenfels.
