Allen G. Kaufman
The Reverend Mr. Allen G. Kaufman of Sullivan, Missouri was Baptized Into the Hope of Christ’s Resurrection on Tuesday, March 7, 2000 at the age of 69 years.
Al, as his family and friends knew him, was born August 29, 1930 at St. Louis, Missouri to the late William and Edith (Read) Kaufman. He was a graduate of Riverview Gardens High School. He honorably served his country during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Navy. On August 26, 1950 he was married to Joan Peat in St. Louis and to this marriage two sons were born. Al was a career firefighter and Chief with the Riverview Gardens Fire District. Al retired from there in 1968 and moved to Sullivan where he and Joan owned and operated the former La Grande Shop for several years. Later he worked for the State of Missouri in the Department of Weights and Measures and was employed there for approximately seven years. He suffered a major heart attack during this time, which caused him to seek part-time employment at various other positions. These included Wally’s True Value Hardware Store and the Sate Park Visitors Center as a greeter. He enjoyed making candy in his free time, which he would make for the Parish and it’s various activities. Al was known as a genuine “people person.” Al was a faithful member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church of Sullivan. He was in charge of the Parish School of Religion for over twenty years. Al also devoted his life to serving the Lord and his church by studying and becoming a Permanent Deacon. He was ordained on February 9, 1985 and served faithfully until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Robin Kaufman of Sullivan and Allen and Christy Kaufman of St. Louis; one sister, Marita Ketcherside of Owensville, Missouri; two grandsons, Josh and Jake Kaufman of Sullivan; a former daughter-in-law, Tina Kaufman, other relatives, and friends. Al was also a special grandfather to Tyler, Ginny, Tanner, and Jett Young. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Love Orinne Kaufman.
A funeral mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 10, 2000 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with the Reverend Father Theodore Brunnert officiating. Interment was in St. Anthony Parish Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Belle Schmidt
Belle C. Schmidt
Belle C. Schmidt of Sullivan, Missouri, wife of the late Woodrow Schmidt, and daughter of the late Jesse and Minnie (Tice) Harmon, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2000 at the age of 84 years.
Mrs. Schmidt was born August 25, 1915 at what was known as Algire, Missouri near Sullivan. She was raised in the Sullivan area and later moved to St. Louis where she was employed for a time with a telephone company and later with the Union-Pacific Railroad. On October 21, 1950 she was married to Woodrow Schmidt. Together they made their home in various parts of the country, which included Texas, California, and Tennessee. While in California, Belle was employed in a grocery store business. Then, after she and Woodrow moved to Tennessee, she worked as a bookkeeper in a bank in Nashville. After her retirement from the bank, they made their home in Sullivan. Woodrow preceded Belle in death in March of 1998. Belle found great pleasure in gardening and simply watching her flowers grow. She also enjoyed quilting. If Belle and Woodrow were not working in their garden or canning their produce, they probably could be found playing cards or just spending time with members of their family. Family was extremely important to Belle. She often said that she had “lots of children,” having considered herself blessed to have so many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Belle was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan, and was also a member of the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by two sisters, her twin, Ellen Witt, of Sullivan and Myrtle Marvin of Sallisaw, Oklahoma; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Belle was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Ferd Harmon, and two sisters, Dora Summers and Virginia Harmon.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2000 from the Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan with the Reverend Doctor Bart Hildreth officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Hassebroek Funeral Home of Sullivan.
Dorothea Halfaker
Dorothea E. Halfaker of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Thursday, March 2, 2000 at the age of 70 years.
Mrs. Halfaker was born August 10, 1929 at St. Louis, Missouri to the late Cahrles D. and Olga L. (Peterson) Crawford. She was a graduate of Riverview Gardens High School and in 1947 moved to the Bourbon area to make her home. On February 17, 1956 she was married to Dwight Herman Halfaker at Bourbon and to this marriage two children were born. Mr. Halfaker preceded her in death in 1998. She worked for the former Bourbon Standard newspaper and was a part-time librarian for the town library, and was later employed in the Bourbon school district. While working at the school, she was confidante to many of the students. She enjoyed poetry and painting but her family was her life. Even though she lost her long bout with cancer, she will continue to touch many lives and will long be remembered as a person who cared about her many friends.
She is survived by one son, Wesley Halfaker and wife, Debra, of Bourbon; one daughter, Heidi Goodsite and husband, Tom, of Kirksville, Missouri; her mother-in-law, Alma Halfaker of Bourbon; one brother, Alfred Crawford of Bourbon; one sister, Alice Bremer and husband, Warder, of Bourbon; five grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mrs. Halfaker was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lacy Erin Goodsite.
Graveside services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2000 at the Bourbon Cemetery in Bourbon. Visitation was held from 6:30 until 9 p.m. Friday evening and from 10 am until 12 noon on Saturday at the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon. Those who desire may make memorials to the charity of your choice.
Pearl Toland Williams
Pearl Burch Toland Williams of Bourbon, Missouri passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2000 at the age of 67 years.
Pearl was born October 19, 1032 at Bourbon, Missouri to the late Carl and Mildred Ryerson Lehmann. She had lived the majority of her life in the Bourbon area and was a homemaker for the greater part of her married life. She was first married to Troy Burch and to this marriage a daughter was born. She was later married to Al Toland on April 8, 1964 and they had made their home in the Leasburg and Bourbon area for many years. Al preceded her in death on September 29, 1991. Pearl was a very giving person who was personable and caring. Her family meant everything to her and was a dedicated wife and mother. A few years after the death of Al, Pearl was married to Roy Williams who survives.
She is also survived by her daughter, Suzie Edge and husband Travis of Bourbon, one sister, Viola Wymer of Bourbon, three grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. A grandson, Mike Nye preceded her in death as did a brother, Floyd Lehmann and a sister Effie Voss.
Graveside funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2000 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri with the Rev. Allen Payne officiating. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Bourbon, Missouri.
Myron S. Woodcock
Myron S. Woodcock of Little Rock, Arkansas, formerly of Sullivan, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2000 at the age of 64 years.
Mr. Woodcock was born on August 23, 1935 in Sullivan, Missouri to the late Thomas Isaac and Maud Alice (Nettell) Woodcock. He was raised in Sullivan and graduated from the Sullivan High School. Myron honorably served his country in the United States Army. On January 10, 1960 he was united in marriage to Mary Isgriggs in Sullivan, and to this union three children were born. For several years he worked for the Ramsey Corporation as a supervisor. He also owned and operated the Berwan Theater and the Grande Drive In at Sullivan for a number of years. Myron especially enjoyed his work as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service both in Sullivan, and, later in his life, in Little Rock, Arkansas. In his spare time he found pleasure in traveling, reading, history, genealogies, and just engaging in conversation with those around him. Those who knew him best describe Myron as very giving, tenderhearted, and yet a strong man who stood up for what he believed.
He is survived by two sons, Steven Woodcock and wife, Colleen, of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Bruce Woodcock of San Jose, California; one daughter, Kimberly Stout of Sullivan; two brothers, Donald Woodcock of Sullivan and Cecil Woodcock of Climax Springs, Missouri; two sisters, Donna Lindaman and Irene Cowan and husband, Elmer, all of Sullivan; three grandchildren, Samantha and Sharon Stout and Kyle Rose all of Sullivan, a very special friend, Sandy Kitchen and husband, Elbert, of Sullivan, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2000 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Reverend Donald Woodcock officiating. Interment was in Hendrix Cemetery in Stanton, Missouri. Donations may be made to the Hendrix Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund in memory of Myron S. Woodcock.
Judy Ann Schmidt
Judy Ann Schmitt of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Saturday, March 11, 2000 at the age of 41 years.
Judy was born November 25, 1958 at Rolla, Missouri to Evelyn Graddy Schmitt and the late Virgil Charles Schmitt. She had lived her entire life in Sullivan and was a 1977 graduate of Sullivan High School. She later graduated from East Central College in Union with an Associate of Arts Degree in Horticulture. Judy had been employed the past ten years at Paramount Cap Manufacturing Company in Bourbon until ill health caused her early departure from the company. She enjoyed the outdoors and wildlife, making cross-stitch pictures and collecting Hallmark ornaments. Judy was a member of Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church.
She is survived by her mother Evelyn, two brothers, Allen and Charles Schmitt both of Sullivan, four sisters, Joyce Faye Topolski of Rolla, Missouri, Jane and Susan Schmitt and Marilyn Ware all of Sullivan, aunts, uncles, four nieces, Michelle and Stephanie Whitney, Tiffany Bandowski and Melissa Scheer, six nephews, Ryan and Gary Whitney, Justin, Daniel, and William Schmitt and Charlie Scheer and Brandon Monroe, other relatives and friends. Along with her father, Virgil, she was preceded in death by a sister Shirley Elizabeth Schmitt.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 13, 2000 from Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church with the Rev. Father James Pavlik officiating. Interment was in Holy Martyrs Parish Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
Howard S. Chapman
Howard S. Chapman of Sullivan passed away on Monday, March 13, 2000 at the age of 61 years.
He is survived by one son, Rocky Parks and wife, Nickie, and children, Gage and Ian (pronounced E-an), of Sullivan; one daughter, Valerie Johnson and husband, Mike, and children, Christy and Jeremy, of St. Clair; one brother, Keith Chapman and wife, Joyce, of the state of Texas; other relatives, and friends.
It was Mr. Chapman’s desire to be cremated. A private interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan.
Luella Schmidt
Luella T. Schmidt, a former teacher, died Sunday, march 19, 2000 at St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles from heart disease. She was 86 and lived in St. Louis County.
Mrs. Schmidt began her teaching career in 1932 in a one-room schoolhouse in the Pea Ridge area near Sullivan, Missouri as well as Strain-Japan and Spring Bluff schools in later years. In 1960 she moved to St. Louis after commuting to Washington University from Sullivan and joined the Riverview School District, where she taught at LeMasters School until her retirement in 1978.
Mrs. Schmidt graduated from Washington University in 1960 with a degree in elementary education.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and William Readenour of St. Charles, Missouri, two grandchildren, Christopher and Lisa Readenour of St. Charles, a dear friend, Herman Rosenkranz of St. Louis, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Along with her husband, Estel, Mrs. Schmidt was preceded in death by two sisters, May Strauser and Margie Jasper and one brother, Robert Taylor.
Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 23, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with the Rev. Elinor Stock officiating. Interment was in Cave Spring Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri.
Clarence Biermann
Clarence Biermann of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2000 at the age of 68 years.
Clarence was born September 8, 1931 at Washington, Missouri to the late martin and Martha Uhrmann Biermann. He graduated from Washington High School where he played on the varsity basketball team. In 1954 Clarence owned and operated a Dairy Queen in Sullivan. Later he owned and operated the original Sullivan Bowl which was located behind the former Zenos’ Restaurant. In 1960 he moved the location of the bowling lanes to it’s present site on Missouri Street, where he operated it for many years. He was awarded a life-time membership in the Sullivan Bowling League and helped to organize many of the league activities for the youth and adults. Clarence was also a member of the Sullivan Country Club where he was affectionately known by all. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a very charitable man who would help anyone in need. After selling the Sullivan Bowl, Clarence later owned and operated the former White Swan Lounge, Wedge Tavern, and Pioneer Lounge. He was a member of Saint Anthony Parish of Sullivan and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie #3781 of Sullivan, Knights of Columbus of Sullivan and Washington, and the Elks Lodge #1559 of Washington.
He is survived by two sons, Gary Biermann and Jim Biermann and wife Trina, one daughter Brenda Biermann and husband Larry Rochleau all of Sullivan, four grandchildren, Todd, Tina, Jordan, and Justin, three brothers, Wilbert, Ray and Gene Biermann. A special friend Gail Ransom and her sons and daughters-in-law, and her grandchildren other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Ralph and by a sister, Ruth.
A gathering of family and friends was held from 5:30 – 9 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Memorial funeral services were conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2000 from the Eaton Funeral Home. Interment was in Saint Anthony Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri.
