WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Dr. Velma S. Birkhead, 97, of Warrensburg, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, at the Western Missouri Medical Center.
Ray Ehlers
(April 6, 1930 - June 11, 2011)
Ray Norman Ehlers, 81, of Gerald, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Frene Valley Health Center. He was born April 6, 1930, in Gerald the son of the late Rudolph Leo and Alvina T. Landwehr Ehlers. On April 9, 1955 he was united in marriage to Bonnie Meyer who survives at the home.
Ray was a truck driver for Beaufort Transfer Trucking for 30 years. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was member of St. Paul United Church of Christ where he was a past president of the church council and cemetery board, American Legion Post and a devoted member of the Gerald coffee shop guys.
He liked to tinker in his garage and barn where he meticulously kept everything in order. He had a love for driving and he and family have visited all 50 states.
He is survived by one son: Douglas Ehlers of Overland, Missouri; one daughter: Patricia Holley (husband Don) of Jackson, Missouri; two brothers: Waldo Ehlers of Union, Missouri and Milford Ehlers of Rockledge, Florida; two grandchildren: Matthew Ferrell of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Jennifer Ferrell of St. Louis Missouri and numerous nieces, nephews and friends, especially his little buddy Colton. He is preceded in death by five bothers and three sisters. Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Meyer-Hilke-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at St. Paul United Church of Christ. Interment will follow in St. Paul Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. John’s Mercy Hospice or St. Paul United Church of Christ. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer-Hilke-Millard Funeral Home, 21 East Fifth Street, Gerald, Missouri.
Anna Mae Little
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Anna Mae Little, age 97, of Lawton, Oklahoma, formerly of Buffalo and Warrensburg, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2006, at the Willow Park Nursing Home in Lawton.
She was born on March 10, 1909, in Arcadia, Indiana, the daughter of George and Amanda (Derstler) Cobler.
On September 28, 1926, she married Marcus Little Jr. in Anderson, Indiana, and had 61 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1988.
Mrs. Little was a homemaker and had worked in Retail Department Stores. She was a member of the Savior Lutheran Church in Buffalo.
Survivors include a son, Marcus C. Little III of Kansas City, Missouri; a daughter, Ruth Johns of Warrensburg; ten grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; and seventeen great-great grandchildren.
The Reverend Rick Marrs will be officiating.
Burial will be in the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, Missouri, at 2:30 p.m. Pallbearers are Chuck Johns, Dan Johns, Bill Weske, David Price, Mark Little IV and Ken Martin.
The family will receive friends on Monday morning from 9:30 until service time at the church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hospice of Lawton, Oklahoma and may be left in care of the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.
Lorraine Frances Graham
WARRENSBURG. Mo. - Lorraine Frances Graham, 88, died December 11, 2006 at the Cedar Valley Hospice House in Waterloo, IA.
She was born on May 30, 1918 in Waterloo, IA, and was a daughter of the late Paul Vinton Stealy and Gladys Willier. She married Joseph Henry McCully on March 27, 1937 in Waterloo, Iowa. Joe preceded her in death. She later married Thomas Robert Graham on November 16, 1953 in Seguine, Texas.
She was a member of Warrensburg Eastern Star, Chapter 3; the White Shrine of Jerusalem; Sedalia Shrine; four time Past Worthy High Priestess; Past President of Missouri State White Shrine; Past Nobel Grand of Rebekah's Lodge, the Warrensburg lodge #35, and the Higginsville Lodge #683; served as outside guard of State Rebekah Assembly and honored Sweetheart of the year and was asked to be a mother for the ensuing year; Past president of V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Warrensburg #2513; member of the Royal Neighbors of America; compiled the President's Scrapbook for the Auxiliary; Past President of the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary of the Independent Order of the Oddfellows out of Kansas City Auxiliary; Past President of Ladies Auxiliary Patriarch Militant of I.O.O.F having held appointed offices in the Missouri Association of L.A.P.M.
She is survived by Son, Darrel & Paula McCully of Waterloo, IA; Son, Gary & Jacquie McCully of Traer, IA; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 2 Great Great Grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joe McCully; her second husband, Tom Graham on February 28, 2006; a great grandson, Joshua; and her brother, Paul B. Stealy.
Services will be conducted 10;30am Saturday, December 16, 2006 at the Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma, Iowa. Burial will follow Masonic Cemetery in Montezuma.
Friends may greet family from 6-8pm Friday at the Watts Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Grundy Hospice or the Rebekah's Lodge.
David Lee Heisinger
(December 17, 1929 - June 10, 2011)
David Lee (Dave) Heisinger, 81, of Jefferson City, died on Friday morning, June 10, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Bluffs in Jefferson City. He was born December 17, 1929, in Jefferson City, a son of Oscar Frederick Heisinger and Hilda Ann (Veit) Heisinger. He graduated from St. Peters Catholic High School in 1947.
He married Sue Ann (Susie) Volkmer June 9, 1956 at St. Peters Church in Jefferson City. She preceded him in death on August 19, 2004 at their home.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from 1951 through 1955, rising to the rank of staff sergeant and receiving the National Defense Service Medal as his service was during the Korean War. He entered the hearing aid profession in 1955 and joined with the late Lonnie Wekenborg in the early 1960’s and they established Heisinger-Wekenborg Hearing Aid and Optical Service in Jefferson City’s downtown where they operated for many years until their respective retirements.
Mr. Heisinger was active in the Central Missouri CB Radio Club beginning in the 1960’s. He was an avid outdoorsman taking the family camping, fishing and target and clay trap shooting. He enjoyed woodworking and reading. After retirement, he volunteered at Capital Region Medical Center. He also took up bicycle riding on the Katy Trail, doing so well into his 70’s, remaining active until Parkinson’s disease made that no longer possible.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Susie. He was also preceded in death by his wife Susie’s three brothers, Harold, Bob and Dick Volkmer.
He is survived by: one son: Matthew Heisinger, his wife Jami and their children Kendra and Cole, of Jefferson City; three daughters: Joyce Baker, her husband Phil and their daughter Michelle, of Jefferson City; Jennifer Scanland and her husband Rob, of Carson City, Nevada; and Khristine Heisinger, of Jefferson City; two brothers: Jim Heisinger and his wife Barb, of Vermillion, South Dakota; and Richard Heisinger and his wife Nawasa, of Jefferson City. He is also survived by sister-in-law Janda Volkmer, Steilacoom, Washington; sister-in-law Dian Volkmer, Hannibal, Missouri; and brother-in-law Paul Volkmer and his wife Betty, and many beloved nieces and nephews and their children.
Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at the Houser-Millard Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at the St. Joseph’s Bluffs Chapel, 1306 West Main Street, Jefferson City, with the Reverend Jim Mueller officiating. Private interment with military honors will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests that contributions in Dave’s memory be made to either Heisinger Bluffs/St. Joseph’s Bluffs in Jefferson City or to the Missouri State Parks Foundation earmarked for the Katy Trail. Catherine B Koenig
(December 2, 1922 - June 10, 2011)
Catherine B. Koenig, 88, of Jefferson City, passed away Friday, June 10, 2011 at St. Mary’s Health Center. She was born December 2, 1922 in Linn, Missouri, the daughter of the late Edward and Bertha (Berhorst) Voss.
On March 6, 1943, she was united in marriage to Quentin Koenig, who preceded her in death on March 19, 1984.
Catherine attended Linn Elementary schools through the eighth grade. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the Helping Heart Club of St. Peter’s Church, and the Lady’s Sodality of St. Peter’s Church. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, embroidering, gardening, working with flowers and BINGO.
She is survived by one son: Kenneth Koenig of Jefferson City; two daughters: Linda Schmitz (husband Gerhard) of Westphalia, and Sandra Wishon (husband Steve) of Jefferson City; one brother: James Voss of Florissant, Missouri; one sister: Dorothy Bock of Westphalia; seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, one great granddaughter, two brothers and one sister.
Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June14, 2011 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father Basil Eruo officiating. Father Clarence Patrick Wheeler, MS
(May 1, 1923 - June 9, 2011)
Father Clarence Wheeler, MS, 88, of Jefferson City passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011 at the Villa Marie Nursing Home. He was born on May 1, 1923 in Olyphant, Pennsylvania a son of the late Clarence and Mary Fitzgerald Wheeler. He was a graduate of St. Patrick High School in Olyphant, Pennsylvania and he began studying at St. Thomas College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Army after Pearl Harbor, where he served on Utah Beach and was injured in the Battle of the Bulge. He entered the Missionaries of La Salette – a missionary order founded in France in 1852.
He went into the novitiate in Bloomfield, Connecticut in 1946 and professed temporary vows on July 2, 1948. He then went to Ipswich, Mass, to study theology and philosophy. That year, his novitiate class was sent to Jefferson City to clean up the old Botz family villa and chicken farm. The property became the new La Salette Seminary in September 1948.
He professed his permanent vows in 1952 and was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in Boston on May 1, 1954. Father Wheeler returned to Jefferson City to teach at the seminary and serve as a prison chaplain at the Algoa Reformatory. He also served from 1954 – 1964 as an auxiliary chaplain at Fort Leonard Wood. In 1965 he was assigned to St. Peter parish in Houston, Texas and in 1966 he established a new catholic parish in the Houston suburb of Friendswood, Texas.
In 1969, he was appointed chaplain of the old Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City and spiritual director for the nuns at the Discalced Carmelite Monastery. He also visited the old Church Farm and Renz Farm prison sites. He served as secretary and treasurer of the American Correctional Chaplains Association, through which he helped train other prison chaplains from all over the country.
Father Wheeler remained the Carmelite chaplain until 2007, offering Mass and spiritual guidance to the nuns, who he counts among his best friends. In 2008, Father Wheeler celebrated sixty years as a member of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette.
He is survived by one brother in-law; numerous nieces and nephews, La Salette Fathers and Brothers; the Meyer Family; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
Friends will be received from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2011 at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, where Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. with Father Dennis Meyer, MS, officiating. Full military honors will be held following the Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Resurrection Cemetery in St. Louis. Donald Bruce McKechnie
(January 25, 1933 - June 7, 2011)
Donald Bruce McKechnie, 78, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at his daughter’s home, with his family by his side. He was born January 25, 1933, in Calvin, North Dakota, a son of the late Alexander and Ruth (Heller) McKechnie. He was a 1947 graduate of Sioux Falls Public High School. On July 30, 1963, Donald was united in marriage in Miama, Oklahoma, to Linda Euper, who preceded him in death in 2004.
Donald worked as an Systems Maintenance Engineer at United Telephone/Sprint for thirty-seven years, until his retirement in 1994. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the Mason’s and the Order of the Eastern Star. Donald enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, spending time with his family, spending time with his friends at Dudley’s Restaurant, and always enjoyed helping others.
He is survived by three children: Rita Brondel (husband Todd) of Jefferson City; John McKechnie of Independence; Juli Little (husband Mike) of Jefferson City; three sisters: Marilyn McNeely of Springfield, South Dakota; Carol Preisendorfer of Grants Pass, Oregon; Judith Fingar of Seattle, Washington; two brothers: John McKechnie of Seattle, Washington; David McKechnie of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother: Jim McKechnie in 2010.
Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2011, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, with Funeral Services and Full Military Honors to follow at 7:00 p.m., with Chaplain Bruce Gardner officiating.
