William Lemons
William H. 'Willie' Lemons, 90, of Gipsy, was born Dec. 11, 1911, at Gipsy, the son of the late Harvey and Carrie Skinner Lemons, and died Aug. 16, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Mr. Lemons was a custodian and school bus driver for Zalma schools for over 20 years. He attended Berrong General Baptist Church in Gipsy. On Jan. 14, 1936, Mr. Lemons and Ethel Porter were united in marriage at Gipsy, and she survives of the home. Other survivors include seven sons, Truman Lemons of Cape Girardeau, Charles Lemons of Marble Hill, Ivan Lemons, Harold Lemons, and Tommy Lemons, all of Zalma, Dean Lemons of Gipsy, and Terry Lemons of Scott City; six daughters, Dorothy Richmond of Bridgeton, Mo., Shirley Chestnut of Jacksonville, Fla.; Ruth Hefner of McGee, Linda Seiler of Puxico, Peggy Stepp of Arab, and Barbara Masters of Virginia Beach, Va.; 24 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. An infant son, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Visitation was held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Rev. LeeRoy Hefner officiating. Rev. Eldo Eaker and Rev. Bob Porter will assist. Interment will follow at Berrong Cemetery in Gipsy.
Martha Cox
Martha Cox, the daughter of the late William E. and Margarette Ezell Cox, was born in Dexter, Missouri, on Dec. 5, 1949, and died at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva, Ill., on Aug. 11, 2002, at the age of 52 years. Ms. Cox attended Dexter High School and moved to St. Charles, Ill., 36 years ago. She was employed as a truck driver with Richardson Electronic Company. Surviving are one sister, Mary Cordray of St. Charles, Ill.; one brother, William Cox of Naperville, Ill.; one honorary brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Goins; one aunt and uncle, Virginia and Don Jones; four nephews, Bob and Sheri Cordray, Mark Cordray, Michael and Tina Cox, Darrell and Nicole Goins; four nieces, Margarett Cordray, Cheryl and Don Kage, Shannon and Jim Sarlo, Lisa and Russell Swanson; four great nephews, Andrew Kage, Steven and Adam Cordray, Michel Black; and one great niece, Micha Cox. Other relatives and many friends also survive. She was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Cox, on April 7, 2000. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter with Rev. Rick Patterson of Dexter officiating. Interment will follow in the Armstead-Dowdy Cemetery near Dexter with Watkins and Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
William Lucas
William L. Lucas, 66, of Wappapello, was born Sept. 11, 1935, the son of the late Lewis and Elene Griffith Lucas, and died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at his home. Mr. Lucas was a retired gunnery sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a Fleet Reserve member. He was also a member of Oglesville General Baptist Church. Mr. Lucas was united in marriage on June 1, 1977, to Norma Jean Wilcox, and she survives of the home. Other survivors include four sons, William Lucas, Jr., of Coryville, Tenn., Darrell Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz., Holland Wilcox of St. Louis, and Charles Wilcox of Qulin; four daughters, Mildred Blankenship of Jacksboro, Tenn., Patricia Stewart of Bloomington, Ind., Rhonda Hager of St. Louis, and Cindy Fischer of St. Louis; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Harry Allen Lucas. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Rev. Doug Richmond officiating. Interment will follow at Morgan Memorial Park in Advance.
Sullivan Clark
Sullivan Clark, Jr., 70, resident of rural Essex (Penermon) was born on Nov. 14, 1931, in Hayti to the late Sullivan and Delia Loggins Clark and was a lifetime resident of Missouri. He died Aug. 12, 2002, at the St. Louis University Hospital. He was a self-employed farmer and a retired bus driver for Richland High School, an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and a member of the Bloomfield American Legion Post Number 382. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Grayridge where he served as head of the deacon board and was also a member of the board of the directors of the Christian Liberty Association. On Dec. 31, 1954, he was united in marriage to Minnie Pryor, who survives of the home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by eight sons, Willie Clark, Charles Clark, Sullivan (Sonny) Clark and Mitchell Clark, all of Sikeston, Elmer Clark and Gaylon Clark of Malden, Johnny Clark of Dallas, Texas, and Mark Clark of Rayton, N.M.; four daughters, Dealia Fave Hampton and Florence Shaw of Sikeston, Patricia Clark of Poplar Bluff, and Kelley Clark of the home; one brother, Charlie Clark of Charleston; one sister, Elizabeth McElmurry of St. Louis; 32 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Freewill Missionary Baptist Church, 132 W. Center Street in Sikeston. Rev. Leroy Williams, pastor of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Charleston with the Missouri Military Honors Program conducting graveside rites. Sparks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Clarence Lacy
Clarence O. Lacy, born June 19, 1924, at Joiner, Ark., died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at his residence in Ellsinore. He was a member of the Bethel Chapel Church and formerly worked for Batson Construction. On Oct. 25, 1945, he was united in marriage to Bessie Henderson who preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1969. Survivors include six sons, Dennis Lacy, of Bell City, David A. Lacy, Gary L. Lacy, Crockett Lacy, Eric Lacy, all of Poplar Bluff, and Ronald E. Lacy, of Bell City; one daughter, Bertha J. Lacy, of Ellsinore; two sisters, Ella B. Moss, of St. Louis, and Clyte Kearby of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Bill Lacy of Harrisburg, Ark.; and 17 grandchildren. Visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m., Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk with Rev. Charles Kelly and Rev. Devon Black officiating. Interment will follow at Poplar Bluff Cemetery.
Alex Lee and Anthony McAfee
Alex and Anthony McAfee, the sons of Debbie Lynn Bonee and Lloyd McAfee II, were born in St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis on August 2, 2002, and died a short time later. Surviving are their parents, Debbie Lynn Bonee and Lloyd McAfee II, of Dexter; maternal grandparents, Mary Bonee and Ray Jones of Dexter; paternal grandparents, Lloyd McAfee of Clarence, Mo., and Elizabeth Turnbough of St. Louis. They were preceded in death by one sister, Tori Lee Green. Visitation was held after 9:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Graveside funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at Dexter Cemetery with the Rev. Ricky White of Poplar Bluff officiating. Interment followed in the Dexter Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Annie Scowden
Annie R. Scowden, 98, of Advance, was born Jan. 13, 1904, at Kansas, Ill., the daughter of the late William H. and Josephine Glovier Simmers, and died Aug. 10, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Scowden was a homemaker and a member of Bethel General Baptist Church in Advance. In 1926 she was married to Evert Harris, and he preceded her in death on June 12, 1931. She then married Oren Scowden in 1935 at Greenbrier, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 1953. Survivors include four sons, Lloyd Harris of Puxico, Dwane Scowden of Carthage, Dwight Scowden of Sturdivant, and Bob Scowden of Whitewater; four daughters, Margaret White, Shirley McCollough, Rachel Carlton and Barbara Shell, all of Advance; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Scowden and Floyd Harris; two grandchildren, six sisters and four brothers. Visitation was held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Bro. Dale Wiseman and Rev. Keith Price officiating. Interment was held at Berrong Cemetery near Gipsy.
Chester B. Branum
Chester B. Branum, son of the late Thomas Jefferson Branum and Alice Hastings Branum, was born on May 26, 1924, at Hornersville and died at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Dexter on August 9, 2002, at the age of 78. He was united in marriage to Thelma Menley McNeeley on May 1, 1988, at Dexter. Mrs.; Branum survives of the home in Dexter. Mr. Branum was a member of the Sugar Tree General Baptist Church near Dexter, a former custodian at the Dexter High School, a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II, and a resident of Dexter. Other survivors include two sons, Jerry Branum and Deryl Branum, both of Dexter; two step-daughters; two brothers, Charles Branum and Tommy Branum, both of Kennett; three grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lee Branum, Milt Branum and Willie Branum; two sisters, Beryl Holmes and Nellie Hanners. Visitation was held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joe Ogelvie and Rev. Everett Hessling officiating. Interment followed in the Dexter Cemetery.
Wynard Aslin
Wynard Earl Aslin, son of Bonnie Floyd and Mertie Dell Lewis Aslin, was born on January 30, 1920, in Bloomfield, and died August 9, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia. He was married to Emeline Czapinski on January 9, 1945, and she survives of the home. Mr. Aslin was a graduate of University of Missouri. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. After serving in the army, Mr. Aslin was the Executive Secretary with Missouri Seed Improvement Association for 42 years until his retirement in 1987. He also had a faculty appointment at the University of Missouri-Columbia in Field Crops. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and Golden K Kiwanis Club in Columbia. Other survivors include two sons, Ray Aslin of Manhattan, Kan. and Larry Aslin of Fayetteville, Ark.; a daughter, Medarda Hoffmann of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, David Aslin of Clio, Mich.; a sister, Ilena Aslin of Cape Girardeau; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 12, 2002, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral was held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Msgr. Michael Flanagan officiating. Interment followed at Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors.
