Sarah "Peg" Parker
Sarah "Peg" Parker, the daughter of the late Robert and Cossie Ellis Sanders, was born in Parma on Dec. 19, 1921 and died at her home in Essex on March 6, 2002, at the age of 80. Mrs. Parker moved Essex in 1954. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Bernie. On April 29, 1921 she was united in marriage to Fonnie Roscoe Parker. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1991. Surviving are three sons, Kenneth Parker of Leaf River, Ill., Larry Parker of Puxico, and Kevin Parker of Essex; three daughters, Carol Shirkey of Bloomfield, Sue Henson of Fingers, Tenn. and Phyllis Gregory of Greenville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Sanders of Chaffee; two sisters, Pansy Welch of Vidalia, La. and Stella Carroll of Chaffee. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Nora Woolem and Mae Breece; and one brother, Bill Sanders. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter on Friday, March 8 from 6 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 9 at 11 a.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dennis Ward of Essex officiating. Interment will follow at the Essex Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements. Cynthia Collier
Cynthia G. Collier, the daughter of the late Grady Edward and Sybil Estell Nunnery Collier, was born in Kennett on July 4, 1961 and died at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston on March 6, 2002, at the age of 40. Mrs. Collier had lived most of her life in the Bernie and Parma communities. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bernie. Surviving are one daughter, Christina Collier of Bristol, Tenn.; five brothers, Ron Collier of Dexter, Gary Collier of Sikeston, Steve Collier of Bernie, Keith Collier of Springfield, Mo., and Alan Collier of Clarkton; three sisters, Linda Snider of Ballwin, Mo., Wanda Onderdonk of North Little Rock, Ark. and Dianne Peterson of Jackson, Ark. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn Collier. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter on Saturday, March 9 after 12 p.m. Funeral services will then be conducted at 2 p.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bob Wiggins, of Dexter, officiating and Rev. Karen Oldham, also of Dexter, assisting. Interment will follow at Mt. Gilead Cemetery near Malden with Watkins & Sons Funeral Services of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Vernon Cooper
Vernon Robert Cooper of Bloomfield, son of the late Charlie and Victoria Pope Cooper, was born Aug. 21, 1914 at Zadock, Mo. and died Thursday, March 7, 2002 at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bloomfield, at the age of 87. Vernon was united in marriage to Vercie May Dunivan on Aug. 15, 1940 near Swinton, she survives of the home. Mr. Cooper was a retired construction worker and livestock farmer. He was a member of the Oak Ridge General Baptist Church and had served as a deacon for over 60 years. Survivors include four daughters, Mildred McClain, Linda McRoy, and Velma White, all of Bloomfield, and Janet Abernathy of Advance; three sons, Milford and Larry Cooper of Bloomfield, and Gary Cooper of Advance; nine grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Norman, Vader, Floyd and Eldon Cooper; and four sisters, Myrtus Carney, Elva Mann, Geneva Cooper and Erma Hester. Visitation will be held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield on Friday, March 8 from 4 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 9 in the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel with his son-in-law, Kenneth White and Gary Cooper officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak Ridge Cemetery near Zadock with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Loren Jackson
Loren E. Jackson, 83, son of the late James Marvin and Mary Ann Smith Jackson, was born April 19, 1918 in Cape Girardeau County and died on Sunday, March 17, 2002, at his home in Advance . Mr. Jackson was a farmer and a veteran of the United States. Army serving in W.W. II. He was united in marriage on June 15, 1954 to Elva Watkins at Jackson. Mrs. Jackson survives of the home in Advance. He is survived by three sons, Jerry Jackson of Qulin, Jimmy and Shawn Jackson, both of Advance; one daughter, Linda Eddie of Texas; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and two step-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by one son; Tommy Jackson. Visitation was held on Monday, March 18 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance. Funeral services were conducted, today, Tuesday, March 19 at 11 a.m. in the Morgan Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Tolbert officiating. Interment followed at Morgan Memorial Park in Advance with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of arrangements.
Chalmer Ray Elsworth
Chalmer Ray Elsworth of Malden, son of the late Homer Cleveland Elsworth and Madgie Bell Partin Elsworth was born on Sept. 13, 1935 at Bernie and died in the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on March 19, 2002, at the age of 66. Mr. Elsworth was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy of Bernie, a retired inside truck driver for Elmhurst Chicago Stone of Elmhurst, Ill. He was united in marriage to Doris Jean Boone on Aug. 24, 1956 at Bernie. Mrs. Elsworth survives of the home in Malden. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Reggie Ray Elsworth of Gideon, Robert Wayne Elsworth of Parma, and Kevin Dale Elsworth of Malden; by two daughters, Regina Kay Carmickle of Hinckley, Ill. and Pamela Jean Smith of Gideon; by two brothers, Glendle Elsworth of Malden and Hershel Elsworth of Dexter; by three sisters, Louise Hobgood of Bernie, Laurissa (Jean) Brandon and Brenda Brown, both of Dexter; and eight grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leon Elsworth; by two sisters, Linda Elsworth and Donis Elsworth; by one granddaughter, Dawn Marie Elsworth. Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie from 5 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 20. Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel on Thursday, March 21 with Rev. Jim Esque officiating. Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Bernie in charge of arrangements.
Linda "Marie" Winchester
Linda "Marie" Winchester, 64, of Advance, was born May 4, 1938, at Cumberlin City, Tenn., the daughter of Bertie Lee Pulley Smith and the late Robert W. Smith, and died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at her home. Mrs. Winchester was a retired LPN and homemaker. She was a member of the Dongola Friendship Baptist Church. In December of 1962, she and Jerry Edward Winchester were united in marriage at St. Louis, and he survives of the home. Other survivors include her mother, Bertie Lee Smith of Advance; one son, George Smith of Granite City, Ill.; four daughters, Shelia Moro of Cumberlin City, Tenn., Linda Tomlinson and Lori Ann Maddox, both of Advance, and Lisa Ann Canter of Granite City, Ill.; one sister, Betty Lou Baker of Granite City, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A brother, sister and her father preceded her in death. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Dongola Friendship Baptist Church in Dongola with Rev. Dan Overton officiating and Rev. J. Scott Price assisting. Interment will follow in Dongola Cemetery.
Leonard W. Powers
Leonard W. Powers, age 80, of Nixa, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003. He was born March 14, 1922, in Datto, Ark., the son of Jacob Washington and Cora Bessie Cox Powers. On July 13, 1987, he and his wife Kay were married. Mr. Powers was a member of James River Assembly of God Church. Survivors include his wife, Kay; a step-daughter, Jansen Dilley; two step-granddaughters; five sisters, Lucille Marsh of Tulsa, Okla., Bernice Howell of Pocahontas, Ark., Maurice Bundren of St. Peters, Marjorie Ward of St. Louis, and Nelta Hennessey of Tecumseh, Kan. Funeral services were at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in James River Assembly of God Church, Clark Chapel with Pastor John Snavely officiating. Interment followed in Missouri Veterans Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements were under the direction of Adams Funeral Home in Nixa. Helen Maxine O'Heren
Helen Maxine O'Heren, daughter of the late Roy Bickford Woods, Sr., and Elsie Dora Slayton Woods, was born on April 6, 1913, in Bernie, Missouri, and went home to be with the Lord on January 16, 2003, in the Baptist Medical Center at Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 89. She was united in marriage to William Moy O'Heren on February 17, 1932, at Piggott, Arkansas. Mr. O'Heren preceded her in death on December 17, 1970. Survivors include her daughter, Helen Jeanette Blevins and her husband, Jay Blevins of Little Rock, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Michael Jay Blevins and his wife Kathy Blevins of Fort Smith, Arkansas, William Bruce Blevins of Maumelle, Arkansas, and Joni Lynn Terry and her husband, Thomas Gifford Terry of Maumelle, Arkansas; four great-grandsons, Christopher Neal Blevins and his wife Melissa Blevins of McAllen, Texas, Anthony Bruce Blevins of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Patrick Ryan Terry and Michael Shae Terry of Maumelle, Arkansas; one great-granddaughter, Sara Beth Blevins of Phoenix, Arizona; one great-great-granddaughter, Madison Taylor Blevins of McAllen, Texas; two sisters, Lorene Williams of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Betty Branum of Bernie, Missouri. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Nadine Harmon and by one brother, R.B. Woods, Jr. Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, Missouri, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2003. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2003, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Bernie with Rev. Susan Marner-Sides officiating.
