Noah Gaines
Noah O. Gaines, son of the late James Francis Gaines and Lucinda Book Gaines, was born on June 2, 1912 in Clay County, Ark. and died at his resident in Bernie on March 29, 2002, at the age of 89. Mr. Gaines was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Bernie, a school bus driver for the Bernie Public Schools for 30 years and was caretaker of the Bernie Cemetery for 18 years. He was united in marriage to Virgie Whitehead on Nov. 11, 1933 and she preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 1976. He then married Carma Underhill on Jan. 6, 1979 and she preceded him in death on May 1, 1993. He is survived by two sons, Colin G. Gaines of St. Louis and John E. Gaines of Dexter; by one daughter, June Dennis of Springfield; by 11 grandchildren; and by 12 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by one brother, George N. Gaines; by three sisters, Zana Marie Craft, Charity B. Arnold and Susie Henderson. Visitation was held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie from 5 - 8 p.m., Sunday, March 31. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, April 1 in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Scott Jones officiating. Interment followed in the Bernie Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Bernie in charge of arrangements.
Harry Kleinert
Harry Lee Dickerson Kleinert, the son of the late Dickerson Norvin Jerome Weber, was born April 15, 1927 in Dexter and died March 23, 2002 at a local care center following a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease, at the age of 74. He had lived with his grandparents, Richard Lee and Emma Sprinkles Dickerson. He was legally adopted by his mother's second husband George Kleinert in Detroit, Mich. Harry was first united in marriage to Barbara Holcomb. Later he married Maryan Baker on April 12, 1957 in Los Angeles, Calif. On April 15, 1978, he was united in marriage to Virginia Lessley in Salt Lake City. Harry Lee served as a Military Police Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II with Company B, 397 Military Police Battalion. In 1959, he accepted a job with Hercules and relocated to Salt Lake City and retired from there on March 31, 1989. He was an avid outdoorsman, bicycle racer, golfer, an excellent tennis player and audio buff. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Kleinert; two daughters, Tamson Kleinert Trelstad of Minneapolis, Minn. and Stephanie Y. Kleinert Borders of Park City, Utah; and five grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one half-sister, Dolores Jean of Portland, Oregon. Visitation was held at Wasatch Lawn, 3401 South Highland Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m. Funeral services were then conducted at 2 p.m. with Rev. Steven A. Interment with full military honors followed.
John Nunn
John L. Nunn, the son of the late Proctor and Ada Ann Calhorn Nunn, was born in Lilbourn on Dec., 21, 1931 and died at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on March 30, 2002, at the age of 70. Mr. Nunn was a resident of Parma after moving from St. Louis in 1989. He was a veteran of the United States Army, a life-time member of the Malden VFW Post, as well as the American Legion in Malden and member of the Eagles Lodge of Dexter. On Dec. 17, 1955, he was united in marriage to Virginia Banks in Ky. and to this union three daughters were born. On Aug. 30, 1996 he was united in marriage to Ruby Beaird Machen in Parma, she survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Teresa Wittenberg of Estacada, Ore., Leisa Oldfield and Paula Blair, both of Franklin, Ohio; by three stepsons, Jimmy Machen of Malden, Timmy Machen of Dexter and Terry Machen of Norfolk, Va.; by one brother, Everett Nunn of Dexter; by one sister, Lou Brewer of Bernie; by six grandchildren; by four step-grandchildren; and by one step-great-grandchild. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, four brothers, and step-daughter. Visitation was held on Monday, April 1, 2002 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Parma. Funeral services were held, today, Tuesday, April 2 at 2 p.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Bro. Stan Dauck of Bernie officiating. Interment followed in the Mounds Cemetery in New Madrid with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Parma in charge of arrangements.
Steven M. Roderman
Steven M. Roderman, son of Lena Potter Roderman of Dexter and the late Claude E. Roderman, was born on Feb. 3, 1952 at St. Louis and died in the Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich. on April 1, 2002, at the age of 50. Mr. Roderman was a supervisor with General Motors in Flint, Mich. and a resident of Davison, Mich. On June 1, 1974 he was united in marriage to Carol Lowes Roderman in Dexter. Mrs. Roderman survives of the home in Davison. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by three daughters, Erica L. Heck of O'Fallon, Jennifer A. Roderman of Davison, Mich., and Lisa M. Roderman of St. Peters; by one brother, Larry D. Roderman of Ste. Genevieve; and by one sister, Janet F. Klingler of Manchester, Mo. Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 4 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 3. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 4 in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wayne Dismuke officiating. Interment will follow in the Hanover Lutheran Cemetery in Cape Girardeau with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Garfield Montgomery
Garfield Montgomery, son of the late John Silas Montgomery and Parilee King Montgomery, was born on Sept. 2, 1920 at Bernie and died in the Beverly Health & Rehabilitation Center in Dexter on March 30, 2002, a the age of 81. Mr. Montgomery was a member of the Dexter Church of Christ, a farmer, a World War II Veteran and a resident of Dexter. He was united in marriage to Francis "Pete" Reed Montgomery on Feb. 15, 1941 in Clarkton. Mrs. Montgomery preceded him in death on April 9, 2000. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dean Montgomery; and by one sister, Lola Young. Survivors include three sons, Phillip Montgomery, David Montgomery and Barry Montgomery, all from Dexter; by one daughter, Judy Nea of Dexter; by seven brothers, Hollas Montgomery, Breman Montgomery and Sam Montgomery, all from Dexter, Leon Montgomery of Oxnard, Calif., Bob Montgomery of Kennett, Bill Montgomery of Paducah, Ky. and Paul Montgomery of North Carolina; by one sister, JoAnn Golden of Malden; by nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation was held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5 - 8, Monday, April 1. Funeral services were conducted today, Tuesday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dale Grissom officiating. Interment followed in the Dexter Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis in charge of arrangement.
Helen Welker
Helen Lorene Welker, daughter of the late Wilmer and Myrtie Garner Dunlop was born at Bell City on Dec. 14, 1916 and passed away at Parkland Health Center in Farmington, Mo., on March 28, 2002 at the age of 85. Mrs. Welker was a resident of Bloomfield where she had spent most of her life. She retired from Elder Manufacturing Co., in 1982 after several years of service. On Dec. 11, 1933 she was married to Sam Welker. He preceded her in death on August 27, 2001. Survivors include one son, Sammie Welker of Bloomfield; two daughters, Jean Dunaway of Bonne Terre and Mary Cook of St. Louis; one brother, Garner Dunlap of Bell City; three sisters, Mary Ayers of Albuquerque, NM, Dobbie Sullivan of Annapolis and Ida Armes of Caryville, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and other relatives and many friends survive to mourn her passing. Aside from her parents, one daughter, Winni Jo, preceded her in death. Visitation started at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 30, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home. Interment followed at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Bell City.
Michael Fuqua
Michael Lee Fuqua, the son of Eva Lee Kilmer Fuqua and the late Dale Fuqua, was born in Oklahoma City, Okla. on Nov. 28, 1963 and died at his mother's home in Dexter on March 29, 2002, at the age of 38. Michael was a resident of Dudley, but had lived most of his life in Dexter. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. On April 4, 1996, he was married to Debbie Morey in Piggott, Ark., she survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Caleb Dale Fuqua of Dudley; by one daughter, Caitlin Lee Fuqua of Dudley; by three step-daughters, Stephanie Hagan of Dexter, April Hagan of Dudley and Amy Hagan of Poplar Bluff; by one brother, Gary Fuqua of Bloomfield; and by his mother, Eva Lee Fuqua of Dexter. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter on Monday, April 1 from 9 - 11 a.m. Graveside funeral services will then be conducted at 11 a.m. at the Dexter Cemetery with Rev. Chuck Hull of Puxico officiating. Interment will follow with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Julie Palmer
Julie Ann Palmer of High Ridge, Mo., daughter of Rodger Dean Palmer and Donna Gail Smith Palmer, was born on Oct. 21, 1988 at St. Louis and died in the St. Johns Mercy Hospital in St. Louis on March 28, 2002, at the age of 13. Julie was a student at Northwest Middle School in House Springs, Mo. Besides her parents, she is survived by one brother, Michael Allen Reeser, of High Ridge; by three sisters, Candice Dawn Palmer, Kelly Lunn Palmer and Tracey Lea Palmer, all of High Ridge; by her maternal grandparents, Theron and Dottie Palmer of Dexter; and by her great-grandmother, Syble Stark of Dexter. Visitation was held on Saturday, March 30 at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie at 12 noon. Funeral services were then conducted at 3 p.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Scott Jones officiating. Interment followed in the Bernie Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Bernie in charge of arrangements.
