James Rudd
James E. Rudd, son of the late William A. Rudd and Lessie Bell Chappell Rudd, was born on Nov. 20, 1919, at Bogota, Tenn., and died in the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center at Dexter on Sunday, March 9, 2003, at the age of 83. Mr. Rudd was a former employee of Brown Shoe Company at Piedmont, a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and a resident of Piedmont. Survivors include three sons, Eddie Rudd of Dexter, Roger Rudd of Charleston, and Nils Rudd of Piedmont; one daughter, Donna Rutherford of Oxnard, Calif.; one sister, Willie Mae Nix of Senath; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Rudd was cremated.
Alma Rose
Alma Barker Rose, daughter of the late Charles Henry Barker and Mary Jane Pittman Barker, was born on March 13, 1909 at Hahn, Mo. and died in the Sunbridge Care Center at Marion, Ohio on April 9, 2002, at the age of 93. Mrs. Rose was a charter member of the Missionary Holiness Church of Marion, Ohio. She was a former machine operator for Fulfillment Corp. of Marion, Ohio and a resident of Marion, Ohio and formerly of Dexter. She was first united in marriage to Clyde M. Sitton on Feb. 11, 1928 and he preceded her in death on March 14, 1932. She then married Olivene Rose on July 22, 1933 at Dexter. Mr. Rose preceded her in death on July 31, 1977. Survivors include one son, Donald Rose of Marion, Ohio; three daughters, Doris Sitton Caudle of Dexter, Frances Pinney of Marion, Ohio, and Linda Magill of Delaware, Ohio; three brothers, Marion Barker of Warren, Mich., Clarence Barker of Farmington and Warren Barker of Houston, Texas; one sister, Hazel Kibler of Berkley, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Elvin Dean Rose; by one granddaughter, Cheryl Caudle Daniel; by three brothers, Homer Barker, Elmer Barker and Everett Barker; by three sisters, Agnes Hazlip, Grace Williams and Ethel Wilson. Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 10-11 a.m., Saturday, April 13. Funeral services will then be conducted at 11 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Chapel with Rev. Vyron Yount officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Homer Evans
Homer F. Evans, the son of the late Fred and Myrtle Swank Evans, was born Oct. 19, 1916 in Fairview, Mo. and died at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau on March 20, 2002, at the age of 85. Mr. Evans had lived in Wis., Ill., Ky. and St. Louis before retiring and moving to Puxico in 1972. He was a retired claims adjuster with Continental Insurance Company and had served in the United States Army during World War II, as a Staff Sgt. On April 1, 1939, he was united in marriage to Mona Green in Hickman, Ky., she survives of the home in Puxico. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Debbie Combs of Cookeville, Tenn. and Susan Jackson of Puxico; and by four grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ferral Champ Evans. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico on Friday, March 22 after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wiley McGhee of Puxico officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery near Puxico with Military Rites presented by the Veterans Honor Guard of Poplar Bluff. R.B. Woods, Jr.
R.B. Woods, Jr., son of the late Roy Bickford Woods, Sr., and Elsie Dora Slayton Woods, was born on Aug. 9, 1928, at Bernie and died in the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston on Jan. 11, 2003, at the age of 74. Mr. Woods was an Elder in the Community of Christ Church of Bernie, and he had also served as District President for the church in past years. He had served as Mayor of the City of Bernie for 28 years, a charter member of the Bernie Lions Club, a past secretary of the Bernie School Board, a strong supporter of the Bernie Mules, a City Alderman, a Board Member of DAEOC, a Board Member of Stoddard County IDA, a volunteer fireman, the owner and operator of Woods Supermarket in Bernie for 48 years, and employed at the Sikeston Wal-Mart. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Fears on April 2, 1949, at Bernie. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Woods of Bernie; two sons, Roy Bickford Woods, III and his wife, Ann Fricano Woods of New Orleans, La., and Gary Steven Woods and his wife Krystal Dawn Woods of Lake Charles, La.; nine grandchildren, Heather Menendez, Jennifer Woods, Casie Woods, Richelle Cannon, Ryann Woods, Daniel Woods, Summer Duncan, Joshua Bitoun, Jacob Bitoun; four great-grandsons, Austin Menendez, Hunter Menendez, William Cannon and Harrison Cannon; three sisters, Maxine O'Heren of Bernie, Lorene Williams of Santa Fe, N.M., and Betty Branum of Bernie. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Nadine Harmon. Visitation will be held from 4-9 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Elder Ron Rubottom officiating. Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bernie Libary or Bernie City Park.
Betty Latham
Betty Lu Latham, the daughter of the late Reuben Francis and Jewel Josephine Haskins Bowling, was born in Lilbourn on Jan. 22, 1941, and died at her home in Jacksonville, Ill. on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at the age of 62. Mrs. Latham was employed for 18 years at the International Paper factory in Litchfield, Ill. and later worked with Pathway School in Jacksonville, Ill. for eight years. She was a member of the Baptist faith. On May 18, 1957, she was married to William A. Latham, Sr. in Hernando, Miss. Surviving are her husband, William A. Latham, Sr. of Jacksonville, Ill.; one daughter, Rebecca Ann Savage of Jacksonville, Ill.; two sons, Robert Glenn Latham of Springfield, Ill. and William A. Latham, Jr. of Jacksonville, Ill.; three grandchildren; one brother, Reuben Francis Bowling, Jr. of Imboden, Ark.; two sisters, Ila Mae Horton and Martha Lee Lee, both of Dexter. She was preceded in death by her parents. There will be no visitation or services. Memorial gifts are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Cremation rites have been accorded and a private family committal of the ashes will be held later at the Bernie Cemetery. The Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Ill. is in charge of the arrangements.
Delaney Suzanne Younger
Delaney Suzanne Younger, infant daughter of Bradley Edwin and Kara Rashelle Dunivan, of Advance, was still born at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau on Tuesday, April 9, 2002. In addition to her parents, she is survived by maternal grandparents, Billy Joe Dunivan of Advance and Clara Dunivan of Advance; paternal grandparents, Edwin Younger of Advance and Debra McCall of Sturdivant; paternal great-great grandparents, Beulah Younger of Advance and Lottie Messe of Sturdivant. Graveside services will be conducted at the Oak Ridge Cemetery near Advance on Thursday, April 11 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jack Rogers officiating. Morgan Funeral Home of Advance is in charge of arrangements.
Russell Simpson
Russell Simpson, the son of the late Daniel and Alice Trotter Simpson, was born in Essex on Feb. 19, 1912 and passed away at this home in Essex, Mo. on April 9, 2002, at the age of 90. Mr. Simpson had lived in Weiner, Ark. for many years before moving to Essex, Mo. in 1980. He was a member of the Cooper & Haynes General Baptist Church in Weiner, Ark. On Sept. 12, 1936 he was married to Cloia Simpson in Lake City, Ark. She preceded him in death on Dec. 3, 2001. Surviving are one daughter, Norma Jean Burns of Essex; one grandson, Jerry Triplett of Dexter; one granddaughter, Terry Triplett Adkins of Essex; two great-granddaughters, Shonitie Adkins of Essex and Jessica Triplett of Dexter; one great-great-grandson, Sloan Adkins of Essex; one sister, Ruby Louis of Wiener, Ark.. Other relatives and many friends also survive. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth Simpson, Charley Simpson and Floyd Simpson; five sisters, Louise Craft, Claudy Simpson, Lilly Mae Simpson, Lovie Simpson and Maudy Simpson; and by one half-brother, Walter Herring. Friends may call on Thursday, April 11, 2002, at 12:50 p.m. at the Essex Cemetery in Essex, Mo. Graveside funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, April 11, 2002 at 1 p.m. in the Essex Cemetery with Rev. Ernie Rogers of Poplar Bluff, Mo. officiating. Interment will follow in the Essex Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Effie Stephens
Effie C. Stephens of McGee, the daughter of the late William "Bill" and Effie Wells Wymer, was born May 14, 1919 at Fair Oaks, Ark. and died March 25, 2002 at her daughter's home in McGee, at the age of 82. Effie was Postmaster at McGee for over 27 years and was a member of Shady Dell General Baptist Church. She and husband were also owners of Stephen's Store at McGee for 40 years. She was united in marriage to Elza Stephens on Feb. 11, 1937 at Zalma and he preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 1995. Survivors include one son, James Allen Stephens of McGee; two daughters, Lucille Andrews of McGee and Marie Sue Robertson of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Norvell Wymer of Hickory Ridge, Ark.; one sister, Almeda Bennett of McCrory, Ark.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. Visitation will be held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Wednesday, March 27 from 4:30 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Morgan Funeral Chapel on Thursday, March 28 at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at the New Hope McGee Cemetery near McGee with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of arrangements.
