Joseph Scherer
Joseph E. Scherer, 59, of Advance was born April 14, 1943, in Cape Girardeau, the son of the late Joseph and Bertha Glasstetter Scherer, and died Jan. 16, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Mr. Scherer was retired from the Little River Drainage District. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a Jehovah's Witness. On April 24, 1965, he and Jackie Metheny were united in marriage at Elmo, and she survives of the home. Other survivors include three sons, Joseph Scherer of Oak Ridge, John Scherer and Jason Scherer, both of Advance; three daughters, Theresa Scherer of Marble Hill, Sherri Neal of Morley and Jennifer Scherer of Bloomfield; one brother, Larry Scherer of Palm Bay, Fla.; and 13 grandchidlren. Two infant sons preceded him in death. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Bill Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Morgan Memorial Park in Advance.
Tony Miller
Tony Ward Miller, 54, Springfield, died at 9:59 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in his home after a long illness. He was born on Nov. 8, 1948, in Dexter to Harold and Delores Miller. They both preceded him in death. He was a decorated Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam, where he served two terms and received the Army Aviator Badge, two Bronze Star medals, Vietnam Campaign medal, Air Medal with V-Device with numeral three, and the distinguished Flying Cross with three oak leaf clusters. Mr. Miller is survived by his two daughters, Sarah Jane Rosendahl, Springfield, and Michelle Renee Miller of Boynton Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Miller of St. Louis and Danny Miller of Phoenix, Ariz.; and his grandmother, Naomi Miller of Dexter. Memorial graveside services with military rites by the Veteran's Memorial Team were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery under direction of Klingner Mortuary. Memorial donations may be made to the D.A.V.
Leo Renfro
James Leo Renfro, son of the late Martin A. Renfro and Mae Churchill Renfro was born on February 24, 1924 at Hector, Ark. and died at his residence in Bernie on June 13, 2002 at the age of 78. Mr Renfro was the former co-owner of Belle's Freeze Queen in Bernie, a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II, a member of Bernie Masonic Lodge # 573, a resident of Bernie and an avid golfer. He was united in marriage to Belle LaRue on February 24, 1944 at Piggott, Ark. Mrs Renfro survives of the home in Bernie. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Gary and wife Mary Renfro of St. Peters, Mo., Roger Renfro and Randy Renfro both of Dexter; by three daughters, Charlotte and husband Norman Combs of Kansas City, Mo., Janice Pott of St. Louis and Darla and husband Jim King of Kansas City, Mo.; by one brother, Newton Elmo and wife Mavis Renfro of Aztec, New Mexico; by two sisters Marjorie and husband Lloyd Zimmerman of Dexter and Dean and husband Carl 'Bunk' Swallows of Asherville, Mo.; by fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, E. C. Renfro and Kennet 'Mutt' Renfro. Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie from 5 p.m.-8. Friday, June 14. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m., Friday evening. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday June 15, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Bernie with Rev. Dale Hartle officiating. Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
Norman 'Toby' Sherfield
Norman 'Toby' Sherfield, the son of the late Otis and Iva JO Hunt Sherfield, was born in Bernie, on April 30, 1919, and died at his home in Dexter, on June 9, 2002, at the age of 83. Mr. Sherfield had lived in Dexter all of his life and retired after working for 31 years on the Dexter Street Department. He was a Baptist and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. On September 4, 1947 he was married to Melba J. Fulkerson in Piggott, Ark. Surviving are his wife; Melba J. Sherfield of Dexter; by three sons, Roy and Ronnie Sherfield, both of Dexter, David Sherfield of Essex; by two daughters, Barbara Hill of Dexter, Norma Corlew of Essex; by one step-daughter, Dena Lyons of Dexter; by nine grandchildren; by nine great-grandchildren; by one brother, Russell Sherfield of Dexter; and by one sister, Florine Dowdy of Dexter. He was preceded in death by one son, Terry Sherfield; one brother, Henry Sherfield; and one grandson. Visitation was held on Monday, June 10, from 5-8 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services were conducted today, Tuesday, June 11 at 10 a.m., in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Doyle Corlew of Dexter officiating. Interment followed at the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter with Watkins & Sons Funeral Home Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Meredith "Hap" Smith, Sr.
Meredith "Hap" Smith, Sr., son of the late Leroy Smith and Effie M. Burrington Smith, was born on July 25, 1925, at Dundee, Mich., and died at his residence in Idlewild on Jan. 2, 2003, at the age of 77. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Navy in World War II. He was united in marriage to Sallyann Linderman in Britton, Mich., on March 15, 1952. Mrs. Smith preceded him in death on June 25, 1995. Survivors include four sons, Meredith "Hap" Smith, Jr., of Idlewild, Glen W. Smith of Perris, Calif., Doug L. Smith of Spotslyvania, Va., Brian M. Smith of LaPuente, Calif.; two daughters, Madeline Connelly of Pomona, Calif., and Debra Tyre of Jacksonville, N.C.; one brother, Russell L. Smith of Romuls, Mich.; one sister, Shirley Atkins of Florida; 22 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth E. Smith; four brothers, Willard A. Smith, Warren G. Smith, Raymond P. Smith, and Kenny E. Smith; and two sisters, Elnora Kruger and Blanche Meyer. Mr. Smith was cremated and his ashes will be scattered with his late wife.
Jesse Swarm
Jesse M. Swarm, son of the late Archie M. Swarm and Agnes John Swarm was born on March 11, 1922, at Idabel, Okla., and died at his residence in Bell City on June 4, 2002, at the age of 80. Mr. Swarm was a former agriculture laborer, a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II, and was a resident of Bell City. He was united in marriage to the former Cora Lee in 1958 at Phoenix, Ariz., and she preceded him in death on Sept. 16, 1995. Surviving are one daughter, Ruth Alexander of Tyler, Texas; two stepsons, Dallas Dinkins of Bell City and Delmar Dinkins of Las Vegas, Nev.; two half brothers, James Swarm of Lemore, Calif., and Doyle Swarm of Reedley, Calif.; two half sisters, Grace Huff of Traver, Calif., and Addie Huff of Fresno, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, June 11, 2002, in the Creighton Memorial Chapel in Kingsburg, Calif. Interment followed in the Kingsburg Cemetery.
Doris "Dee" West
Doris Dee West, daughter of Patricia Hoffman of Poplar Bluff and John Snyder of Fond Du Lac, Wis.., was born in Birmingham, Ala., on June 11, 1959, and died near Bloomfield on June 10, 2002, as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident at the age of 42. A resident of rural Bloomfield, Mrs. West was affiliated with the New Life Cathedral in Dexter, was a veteran of the United States Army, serving six years in Germany, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. She was united in marriage to Danny West on Aug. 10, 1991, at Bloomfield and he survives of the home near Bloomfield. Besides her husband, she is survived by five sons, Jamie West of Springfield, Jason West and Justin West, both of Bloomfield, Shawn West and Bobby West, both of Hillsboro; four daughters, Diana Holderfield of Dexter, Susan Wilson of Jonesboro, Ark., Dawn Wilson of Bloomfield and Angela Wilson of the home in Bloomfield; her mother and stepfather, Patricia and Charles Hoffman of Poplar Bluff; her father and stepmother, John and Patricia Snyder of Fond Du Lac, Wis..; one brother, Jay Snyder of Poplar Bluff; two sisters, Lynn Robey of Dexter and Talley Savat of Poplar Bluff; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 5:30-8:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral chapel with Rev. Michael Foster and Rev. Robert Dehart officiating. Interment will follow in the Essex Cemetery.
Ruby McMunn
Ruby McMunn, the daughter of the late Henry Martin and Sarah Elizabeth Knight Halbert, was born in Byrdstown, Tenn., on Sept. 14, 1919, and died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on Jan. 1, 2003, at the age of 83. Mrs. McMunn had lived in Dexter most of her life and was the owner-operator of McMunn Auto Parts. She was a member of the Dexter Church of Christ, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and former member of the Rebeckah Lodge. On Dec. 13, 1941, she was married to Leslie McMunn in Malden. He preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1995. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Connie McMunn of Dexter; three grandchildren, Shannon Lemon of Dexter, Cory McMunn of Dexter and Sarah McMunn of Bloomfield; two step-grandchildren, Patrick Hobbs of Dexter and Kellie Affolder of Steamboat Springs, Colo. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Bro. Dale Grissom of Dexter officiating. Interment will follow in the Smith-Stevenson Cemetery near Dexter with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
