John Larry McGowan
John Larry McGowan of Pagosa Springs, Colo. and former resident of Dexter, was born in Rolla, Mo. on Dec. 21, 1934 and lost a long battle to cancer, March 2, 2002 at the Mercy Medical Center in Durango, Colo., at the age of 67. He was the son Lillie Swanson McGowan of Buffalo, Mo. and the of the late John Leonard McGowan. On July 3, 1958 he was united in marriage to Ada Stephens in El Paso, Texas, who will continue to live on their "little piece of mountain" in Pagosa Springs, Colo. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, John Larry McGowan, Jr. and wife, Marie, of St. Louis and James Stephen McGowan and wife, Melissa, of Bedford, Texas; by one daughter, Shannon McGowan Powers and husband, Peter, of Camp Hill, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Shelley McGowan, Devon and Collin Powers, Stephen, Matthew, Melinda and Catherine McGowan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Keith and Jeanie McGowan of Jefferson City and Pat and Faye McGowan of Bolivar; also by four nephews, one niece and a growing number of great nephews and nieces. Larry retired Dec. 31, 1999 from his position as District Sales Manager for Shelter Insurance. He considered the men and women of the Shelter agency force in Southeast Missouri among his extended family. He never considered retirement from his favored avocation-service to First Baptist Church of Dexter and later First Baptist Church of Pagosa Springs. Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 5. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 6 at 10 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wayne Dismuke and Rev. Dan Sanders officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church in Dexter or to the Stoddard County Children's Home.
Laura Anderson
Laura Faye Anderson Churchill Giddens, the daughter of the late Floyd and Alta Wilfong Anderson, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 in Lancaster, Calif., at the age of 71. She was a long time resident of Lancaster, Calif. and a former resident of Dexter. Survivors include four sons, Alan Lee Churchill of Orange County, Calif., Lowell Thomas Churchill of Malibu, Calif., Bradley Eugene Churchill of Palmdale, Calif. and Thomas Author Giddens of Newport, Calif.; one daughter, Patricia Ann Vasquez of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Dale Anderson of Wappapello; one sister, Bonnie Williamson of Dexter; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lowell Thomas Churchill and Thomas Author Giddens. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2 after 11 a.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Andrew Lovins of Dexter officiating. Interment will follow in the Harper Cemetery in Aid with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Clarence Twitty
Clarence Twitty, the son of the late John and Etta Evans Twitty, was born in Morehouse on March 19, 1917 and died at his home near Morehouse on March 20, 2002, at the age of 85. Mr. Twitty had lived in the Morehouse area all his life. He had been a line superintendent with AmerenUE before his retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Alaska building the Alaska Highway. On Nov. 14, 1953 he was united in marriage to Pauline Huddleston in Tunica, Miss., she survives of the home in Morehouse. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Larry Leroy Twitty of Sikeston; by one daughter, Sandra Jean Meier of Vilonia, Ark.; and one granddaughter. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, John Raymond Twitty on Dec. 22, 1998. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Morehouse on Friday, March 22 from 6 - 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Roger Record of Benton officiating. Interment will follow in the Essex Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Morehouse in charge of arrangements.
Blanche Cooper
Blanche Gertie Cooper, daughter of the late Sam and Gertie Summers Mason, was born at Ardeola, Mo. on June 26, 1915 and died at her home in Bloomfield on Jan. 3, 2002, at the age of 86. Mrs. Cooper was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Bloomfield. On Feb. 26, 1936 she was united in marriage to Raymond Cooper, he preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Cooper of Bloomfield and Roger Cooper of Essex; one daughter, Ramona Kelley of Bloomfield; one brother, Donald Mason of Gooding, Idaho; one sister, Thelma Hasty of Bertrand; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Carson Cooper. Visitation will be held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield from 6 - 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. in the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel with Rev. Chuck Clark and Rev. Andrew Lovins officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home of Bloomfield in charge of all arrangements.
Juanita South
Juanita South of Fisk was born Sept. 24, 1926 at Commerce, Mo. and died Jan. 1, 2002 at Fountainbleau Lodge of Cape Girardeau at the age of 75. Mrs. South was a homemaker and she had been a resident of Fisk since 1980. She was united in marriage to William South on Jan. 18, 1947 in Corinth, Miss., he survives of the home. Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Randy South and James South, both of Fisk, and James South of Dexter; by four daughters, Judy Aslin of Jackson, Linda Chitwood of Ellington, Mo., Janet South of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Mary Meisel of Jefferson City; by seven brothers, Frank Stuckey and Charles Stuckey, both of Washington, Joe Stuckey of Benton, Paul Stuckey of Cape Girardeau, John Stuckey of Holts Summit, Mo., Harold Stuckey of Rockford, Ill. and Jim Stuckey of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Mildred Schwitz of Benton and Shae Pack of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4 at the White-Sanders Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Ledbetter officiating. Interment will follow in Ash Hill Cemetery at Fisk with White-Sanders Funeral Home of Fisk in charge of arrangements.
Maude M. Reynolds
Maude M. Reynolds, the daughter of the late Charlie Kines and Hattie Strauthers Kines, was born April 11, 1909 in Shannon County, Mo. and died at Cypress Point Nursing Center in Dexter on March 27, 2002, at the age of 92. Mrs. Reynolds was a homemaker and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church in Leasburg, Mo. for over 35 years where she lived before moving to Dexter in 1995. She was united in marriage to John L. Reynolds on Oct. 20, 1956 in St. Louis. Mr. Reynolds preceded her in death on June 21, 1976. Survivors include two sons, Charles E. Puckett of New Florence, Mo. and William L. Puckett of Pevely, Mo.; one daughter, Virginia L. Fisher of Dexter; one step-daughter, Joyce Ward of Blythe, Calif.; two sisters, Daisy Carr of Winona and Velma Mooney of Washington, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Howard R. Puckett of Cleburne, Texas; by one brother, William Lee Kines of Fort Collins, Colo.; by two sisters, Thelma West of Leasburg, Mo. and Goldie Williams of Ellington, Mo. Visitation will be held at the Britton Funeral Home in Cuba on Friday, March 29 from 5 - 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at Cross Roads Baptist Church in Leasburg on Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jim Delacourt officiating. Interment will follow in the Lea Cemetery with Britton Funeral Home of Cuba in charge of arrangements.
Alvie O. Crabtree
Alvie O. Crabtree, the son of the late Eugene Henry and Dessie Huey Crabtree, was born in Obion County, Tenn., on June 3, 1909, and died at the Three Rivers Healthcare South Campus on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at the age of 93. Mr. Crabtree had lived for many years in St. Louis and in Dexter from 1972 to 2000, and had lived in Ellsinore since 2000. He was retired from Carter Carburetor and a member of the Southwest Church of the Nazarene in Dexter. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a medic during WW II. Mr. Crabtree was married to Adell Smothers in 1941, and she preceded him in death in 1959. He was then married to Thelma Boone on March 4, 1961 in Bernie. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Crabtree of Ellsinore; three daughters, Diane Hamilton of Williamtown, Charlotte Newman of Ellsinore, and Doris Elsworth of Earlville, Ill.; two sons, Phillip Wood of Bakersfield, Calif., and Keith Crabtree of Florissant; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, E.S. "Dobe" Crabtree of Elsberry; and one sister, Lorell Murphy of Dexter; He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ervin, Cam, and Arch Crabtree; and one sister, Lavern Hampton. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. Preston Palmer of Poplar Bluff officiating. Interment will follow in the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
Gerald DeGeare
Gerald Allen DeGeare of Dudley was born Dec. 12, 1938 in Granite City, Ill. and died Dec. 29, 2001 at the Beverly Health & Rehabilitation Center in Dexter at the age of 63. He was a member of the Hobbs Chapel Methodist Church in Dudley, a NASCAR racing fan and loved fishing. Mr. DeGeare was united in marriage to Glenda Louise DeGeare on Jan. 6, 1977. She preceded him in death on Sept. 17, 1999. He was previously married to Janet Townsend. Survivors include four sons, David DeGeare of Olathe, Kan., Greg DeGeare of Dexter, John Wilds of Grandin, Mo., and Robert Wilds of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Kelly Woods of Olathe, Kan.; one brother, George DeGeare of Dudley; and four grandchildren. Visitation was held at the White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk on Monday, Dec. 31 at 6 p.m. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Kim Proffer officiating. Interment followed in the Shain Memorial Cemetery with White-Sanders Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
