Barry Scott
Barry Scott, the son of Alvin and Mildred Smith Scott of Puxico, was born in Poplar Bluff on July 9, 1941 and died at the Three Rivers Healthcare Center North Campus in Poplar Bluff on Jan. 5, 2002, at the age of 60. Mr. Scott had lived in the Puxico area all his life. He was a roofing contractor and was the owner of Com-Serv Inc. of Puxico. He was a 1959 graduate of Puxico High School and attended Missouri University in Columbia from 1960-1962. He attended the Leora Baptist Church in Leora. On Jan. 23, 1965 he was united in marriage to Virginia Henderson in Puxico, she survives of the home in Puxico. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by one son, James. C. Scott of Dexter; by two daughters, Regina Baugher of Puxico and Sherri Clinton of Nashville, Tenn.; by six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Doug Scott of Puxico. Visitation was held at the Watkins & Son Funeral Home in Puxico on Monday, Jan. 7 after 6 p.m. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. in the Watkins & Sons Chapel with Rev. Doug Scott of Puxico officiating and assisted by Rev. Dean Medlin of Parma. Interment followed in the Rock Hill Cemetery near Puxico with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements.
Deen Esarey
Deen Esarey, the son of Richard Deen and Anna May Barks Esarey, was born in Bernie on Dec. 13, 1921, and died at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at the age of 81. Mr. Esarey had lived in Puxico most of his life. He was a retired livestock and row crop farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WW II. Surviving are one brother, Curtis Esarey of Brighton, Ill.; and one sister, Mary Cato of Puxico. He was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Esarey; two sisters, Edna Scowden and Stella Costephens. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Puxico. Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements.
Melvin Williams
Melvin "Churn" Williams of Bloomfield, son of the late Frank and Leecy Bolin Williams, was born Sept. 16, 1922 and died Jan. 6, 2002, at the age of 79. He was united in marriage to Deane Clark on July 4, 1942, she survives of the home in Bloomfield. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son and granddaughter, Jack and Michele Williams in 1974; by eight brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Deane Williams; two daughters, Jayme Stewart and Judi Davis of Winston, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Williams of Jefferson City; grandchildren, Michael Williams of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Scot Williams, Kim Williams and Sandi Williams of Jefferson City, David and Jayna Christopher of Thompson Station, Tenn., Jack Stewart and Jason Davis of Winston, Ga., Darryl and Jenifer Moser of Washington, Mo. and Jeremy Howser of St. Paul, Minn.; three great-granddaughters, Rachel Williams, Sara Williams and Rebekah Christopher.
Churn lived in Bloomfield all his life, graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1942, had his own business for several years and served as Juvenile Officer for 16 years. He was a long-standing member of the First Baptist Church of Bloomfield. Throughout his life he was very active serving his community. He was instrumental in establishing the Stoddard County Children's Home and the Juvenile Detention Center located in Bloomfield. He served on the board of directors for the Stoddard County Children's Home, Children's Place in Malden, Crowley Ridge Country Club, and the Southeast Missouri Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, where he was also a member. Churn also served on the Bloomfield City Council for several years. He loved golf and all sports and refereed basketball and football for many years.
Visitation was held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield after 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2001. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. in the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel with Mike Watkins officiating, assisted by Ron Dunivan, both pastors of Bloomfield churches. Interment followed in the Bloomfield Cemetery with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home of Bloomfield in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stoddard County Children's Home, Stars & Stripes Museum or a charity of your choice.
Juanita Knight
Juanita E. Knight of Gipsy, the daughter of the late Herman and Lula Crafton Jones, was born March 11, 1925 at Risco and died March 27, 2002 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, at the age of 77. She was a homemaker. On April 11, 1942, Juanita and Ralph Knight were united in marriage at Portageville and he survives of the home. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Rick Knight of Las Vegas, Nev. and Randy Knight of Gipsy; by two daughters, Linda Jones of Fresno, Calif. and Phyllis Trumley of Albemy, Calif.; by one sister, Charlotte Bone of Festus; by 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons; two brothers; and one sister. Visitation will be held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Friday, March 29 from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m. in the Morgan Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Tolbert officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Advance with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of arrangements.
A.E. Sturgeon
A.E. "Tuff" Sturgeon of Malden, son of the late Howard Issac Sturgeon and Clara Lacy Sturgeon, was born Sept. 8, 1915 at Zalma and died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at his home in Malden at the age of 86. On Aug. 14, 1950 he was united in marriage to LaNelle Bailey at Piggott, Ark., she survives of the home in Malden. Mr. Sturgeon was of the General Baptist faith, a retired farmer and landowner, a member of the Four Mile Masonic Lodge #212 in Campbell, a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II, and a former trustee and ex-officio treasurer of the Cottonhill Township. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jack Sturgeon of Wappapello and Tony Sturgeon of Neelyville; by one daughter, Mary Nell of Parma; by one brother, Bill Sturgeon of Poplar Bluff; by two sisters, Velma Arrington of Neelyville and Bernice Peck of Bridgeton; by four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred Sturgeon and Elmond Sturgeon; and two sisters, Freda Gulley and Alta Mincey. Visitation was held at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden on Monday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2 in the Bradshaw Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dick Murray and Rev. James Black officiating. Interment followed at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden with Bradshaw Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Jeanie Stephens
Genevieve "Jeanie" Stephens, the daughter of Maurice Edgar Carpenter and the late Anselma Gil Carpenter, was born in Miami, Ariz., on Dec. 26, 1938, and died at her home in Dexter on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at the age of 64. Mrs. Stephens had lived in St. Louis and had lived in Dexter since 1980. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and had worked as a sales clerk at Jimmy's Jewelry & More. On July 15, 1956, she was married to Thomas J. Stephens in Lodi, Calif. Surviving are her husband, Thomas J. Stephens of Dexter; two sons, Joe Stephens of O'Fallon, and Chuck Stephens of Dexter; two daughters, Roxanne Ashby of DeBary, Fla., and Dollie Stoner of Dexter; eight grandchildren; her father, Maurice Edgar Carpenter of Chino, Calif.; one brother, Victor Ruiz of Junction City, Kan.; and one sister, Linda Belasco of San Diego, Calif. She was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur Ruiz. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Keith Garland of Dexter officiating. Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Eloise Trammell
Eloise Trammell, daughter of the late Vick A. Hill and Iona Smith Hills, was born Jan. 25, 1926 at Dexter and departed this life at the residence of her son in Columbia, Missouri, on Jan. 4, 2002, at the age of 75. Mrs. Trammell attended the First Baptist Church in Dexter, was a former science teacher in the Dexter Public School System and a resident of Dexter. She was united in marriage to Lee W. Trammell on May 29, 1947 in Dexter. Mr. Trammell preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 1994.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law: Lee W. Trammell 3rd and Martha of Columbia, Mo., Gary and Resa Trammell of Dexter, and Vic and Kathy Trammell of Broken Arrow, Okla.; by one sister, Ruth Smith of Arvada, Colo., by ten grandchildren: Mike Trammell, Jeff Trammell, Andrew Trammell, Tyler Trammell, Victoria Trammell, Hill Trammell, John Trammell, Virginia Trammell, Courtney Foushee and Justin Foushee.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Thurston Hill and Victor Hill. Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Dismuke officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
Laura "Freda" Kirkpatrick
Laura "Freda" Kirkpatrick of Columbia, formerly of Advance, the daughter of the late Joseph Bradford and Laura White Kelley, was born Sept. 30, 1919 at Octa, Mo. and died Jan. 4, 2002 at Columbia Manor Nursing Home in Columbia at the age of 82. She was united in marriage to Sterling O. Kirkpatrick on June 24, 1945 at Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1997. Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick were owner/operators of Gambles Store in Advance for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Advance. She is survived by two sons, Bob Kirkpatrick of Bowling Green, Mo. and Daryl Kirkpatrick of Columbia; by two brothers, Carson Kelley of Delta and Carl E. Kelley of Kisse Mills, Mo.; by 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Visitation was held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Sunday, Jan. 6 from 4:30 - 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Advance on Monday, Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Clinton Woodfin officiating. Interment followed at the Grassy Cemetery with Morgan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the Advance First Baptist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
