Anna Sanders
Anna Mae Sanders, daughter of the late Jesse William and Alma Patterson, was born on May 5, 1942, at Fisk and died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 at Delta. Mrs. Sanders was a merchandiser for American Greeting Cards and had previously worked at the Butler County Health Department as a homemaker. She lived most of her life at Fisk and had been a resident of Bloomfield since 1991. She was married to Bill Sanders, who survives. Besides her husband, other survivors include two daughters, Julie Rangel, of San Jose, Calif., and Pamela Arnold, of Dudley; one son, Mark Sanders, of Bloomfield; three brothers, Jerrol Patterson and Max Patterson, both of Fisk, and Billy Patterson of Walla Walla, Wash.; two sisters, Debra Trout of Fisk and Jane Diamond of Silva; and seven grandchildren. Visitation will be held today (Sunday), Jan 13, beginning at 6 p.m. at the White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 14, in the White-Sanders Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Brown Chapel Cemetery.
Vergil C. Maze
Vergil C. Maze of Kalamazoo, Mich., died Thursday afternoon, January 10, 2002. Vergil was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Dexter, a son of Robert D. and Minnie (McGowan) Maze, Sr. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Navy. He had been a Kalamazoo resident for 60 years and was employed with Clifton Engineering for 11 years, retiring in 1981. Years ago he worked at K.V.P. He also attended Northeastern Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ollie O. (Hume) Maze on April 8, 2001; a son, Ronald Gene Maze; and six brothers and sisters. He is survived by four children, Gerald K. (Karen) Maze of Oshtemo, Richard A. (Ann) Maze of Kalamazoo, and Linda K. (Don) Elder and Pamela J. (Frank) Crane, all of Galesburg; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Robert D. Maze, Jr., of Dexter; two sisters, Esther Horrocks of Lawton, Mich., and Hilda Ellsworth of St. Peters; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan.15, 2002 from the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., Kalamazoo, Mich. 49007, with Pastor Greg Bishop officiating. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Northeastern Baptist Church Building Fund.
Ethel G. Davis
Ethel G. Davis, 96, of Advance died Thursday, January 10, 2002 at the Advance Nursing Center. She was born Oct. 14, 1905 at Mountain Home, Ark., the daughter of the late Jasper L. and Nancy Smith Eddings. She was united in marriage to Louis B. Davis on Oct. 8, 1921, at Monett, Ark., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1982. She also was preceded in death by one son, six brothers and one sister. Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Advance. She is survived by two sons, Louis Davis of Oak Ridge and Eugene Davis of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Wanda Davis of Advance and Juanita Fellows of St. Louis; one sister, Grace Davidson of Ft. Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Brad Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Morgan Memorial Park, Advance.
Barney Miller
Barney Miller, son of the late Robert Emmett Miller and Elizabeth Trotter Miller, was born on July 14, 1920, at Lutesville and died at his residence in Dexter on Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at the age of 81. Mr. Miller was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dexter, and was the former owner and newspaper publisher of the Daily Statesman in Dexter. He was a member of the Missouri Press Association, past president of the Southeast Missouri Press Association, a 1998 inductee into the Missouri Newspaper Hall of Fame, member of the Dexter Kiwanis club, past president of the Dexter chamber of Commerce, former Elks Citizen of the Year, former member of the Dexter Zoning Commission, former member of the Dexter Library Board, a volunteer literacy tutor at the Mingo Job Corps, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was united in marriage to Marie Braidlow on June 6, 1942, at Rolla. She preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1994. He also was preceded in death by his parents; by one son, John Miller; by three brothers, Paul Trotter, Richard Trotter and Arthur Trotter; and by one sister, Rebeccah Erickson. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Miller of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Joe Miller of Jonesboro, Ill.; by one daughter, Annabeth Miller of Dexter; by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in the First United Methodist Church in Dexter with Rev. Fred Leist officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
Wesley Bright
Charles Wesley Bright of Jackson, the son of the late Grover C. and Sophia C. Knoppf Bright, was born May 22, 1915 in Swinton and died Monday, March 11, 2002, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau at the age of 86. He was united in marriage to Florence Hyslop Bright on Nov. 7, 1936, she survives. Mr. Bright farmed in the Bloomfield Community for many years. From 1952 - 1961, he worked at the former Carney Meat Packing in Dexter. In 1961, he moved to Cape Girardeau and owned and operated Bright's Mobil Gas Station. He worked for Dr. Schoss on his farm, worked at the former Florsheim Shoe Factory in Cape Girardeau, and then farmed the family farm on Route Y. In 1991, he moved to Jackson and went to the Lutheran Home in 2000. He was a member of Hanover Lutheran Church since 1969, where he was involved in the Men's Club, served on the Stewardship Board, the Teen Committee, and was an usher for many years. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Donald Bright of Augusta, Ga.; by four grandchildren; by two sisters, Freda Tucker of Murphysboro, Tenn. and Bernice Kelly of Ruskin, Fla. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Visitation will be held at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson on Wednesday, March 13 from 4 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Sippy officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau with McCombs Funeral Home of Jackson in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Hanover Lutheran Building Fund or the New Home Cemetery Fund at Puxico.
Delores LaQuita Knuckles
Delores LaQuita Knuckles, 69, of Sikeston, died at her rural residence Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, due to an accidental house fire that destroyed her home. She was born Jan. 13, 1933, near Canalou to the late William "Bill" and Vernia Rainwater Landers. She was a member of the Calvary Temple Assembly of God in Sikeston, had been a member of the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Chamber Board of Directors. She was married to Lloyd Knuckles on Aug. 17, 1986, in Piggott, Ark., and he survives of the home in Sikeston. She is also survived by two sons, Ralph Sexton, Jr. and Bill Sexton, both of Sikeston; one daughter, Diane Pearson of Sikeston; one step-son, Kurt Knuckles of Chaffee; one step-daughter, Leah Honsaker of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Gene Landers of Dexter; seven grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel with Rev. Larry Davis officiating. Interment followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston.
Rebekah Hughes
Rebekah Hughes, the daughter of Jim and Susan Gunn Hughes, was born in Dexter on July 23, 1977 and died in North St. Louis County as the result of an automobile accident on Jan. 06, 2003 at the age of 25. Miss Hughes had lived in Pauls Valley, Okla., from 1981 - 1995. She was a graduate from the Pauls Valley High School. She attended Gateway Bible College in Florissant for two years. She had lived in St. Louis for the past for years where she was employed by Starbeam Lighting, Co., and Marty Carsillus Dodge Mitsubishi. She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church. Surviving are her parents: Jim and Susan Hughes, of Jackson; one brother: Brad Hughes, of Florissant; one Niece: Breanna Hughes; paternal grandmother: Lois Hughes, of Morehouse; maternal grandparents: James and Lottie Gunn, of Dexter. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 10 at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2003 in the Watkins and Sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. L.W. Buller, of Waggoner, Okla., and Rev. Michael Boney of Pauls Valley, Okla., officiating. Interment will follow in the Chalk Bluff Cemetery near Dexter with Watkins and Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Clifford Warren
Clifford R. Warren, 85, of Bell City, was born Sept. 12, 1917, in Stoddard County, the son of William and Mattie Scism Warren, and died Friday, March 7, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was a retired rural mail carrier for 32 years. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Bell City and a member and past master of Lakeville Masonic #489 Lodge. He was a veteran of WW II Army Air Corps. He and Yvonne Wright were united in marriage on Feb. 16, 1943, at Mt. Vernon. She preceded him in death on Dec. 2, 1992. He then married Bernice Bollinger Dunn in August of 1993, and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Teresa Steiner and two granddaughters of Bell City; three sisters, Gladys DeJournett, Bessie Edmonds, and Margaret Woodfin, all of Advance. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Chapel with Rev. Linda Zych officiating. Interment followed in Morgan Memorial Park in Advance.
