Billy Kidd, Sr.
Billy D. Kidd, Sr., the son of the late Donald and Ruth Dixon Kidd, was born in Dexter on June 3, 1948. He was a patient at the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, and went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 10, 2003, at the age of 54 years, seven months and seven days. Mr. Kidd had lived his whole life in Dexter. He was employed for 34 years at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a cable splicer. Mr. Kidd was a very active member of the First Assembly of God Church in Dexter where he served as Deacon, past Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday school teacher, leader of the Royal Rangers and served on the Light for the Lost Cook Team and was a member of the Men's Fellowship Club. Mr. Kidd had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Kidd was married on December 31, 1969, to Patty Duncan in Canalou.
Surviving are his wife Patty Kidd of Dexter; two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy D. and Tessa Kidd of Malden, Missouri, and Michael and Melissa Kidd of Pensacola, Florida.; three grandchildren, Cash Kidd of Pensacola, Florida, and Saressa Riddell and Sierra Kidd of Malden, Missouri; two brothers, Donald Kidd, Jr. of Junction City, Kansas, and Ronald Kidd of Sanford, Florida; two sisters, Linda J. Lewis of Dexter, Missouri, and Jane Meeks of Alton, Illinois. Many other relatives and friends also survive. Friends called on Monday, January 13, 2003, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri. A Celebration of Life Service began at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2003, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter, Missouri with Rev. Frank Heitman of Houston, Texas, officiating and Rev. Andrew Lovins assisting.
Pallbearers were Jim Caskey, Bill Miranda, David Montgomery, Bruce Walker, Chuck Fann, Randy Terry. Honorary pallbearers were Bernard Pixley, Bill Gillespie, Freddie Ridenour, Gary Hessling, and Herman Beyerbach. Interment followed in the Caroline Dowdy Cemetery near Dexter, Missouri, with Full Military Honors given by The Veterans Honor Guard of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter, Missouri, was in charge of arrangements.
Nila Botsch
Nila Jeanie Hampton Botsch, daughter of the late Louie Hampton and Lavern Crabtree Hampton, was born on Nov. 22, 1951 at Poplar Bluff and died in the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis on Jan. 16, 2002 at the age of 50. Ms. Botsch was a first grade teacher at the Oak Grove Elementary School in Poplar Bluff and was a resident of Dexter. Survivors include one son, Nathan Botsch of Jackson; one daughter, Natalie Botsch of Bloomington, Ind.; three brothers, Keith Hampton of Dexter, Larry Hampton of Bernie and Allen Hampton of Parma; two sisters, Doris Harmon of Pontiac, Mich. and Mary Lou Ellis of Wappapello. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Braxton Crabtree. Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5 - 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charles Harper officiating. Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Melvin Cureton
Charles "Melvin" Cureton, 69, of Bell City, was born Dec. 12, 1933, at Bessville, the son of the late Charlie and Dessie Skaggs Cureton, and died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. Mr. Cureton had been a farmer. On June 22, 1968, he and Wanda Hamm were united in marriage at Holcomb, and she survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, Charlie Cureton of Bell City; a daughter, Regina Cureton of Bell City; four brothers, Ernest Cureton of Dexter, Buck Cureton of Sikeston, Curtis Cureton and Milford Cureton, both of Vanduser; three sisters, Berdean Wilkerson and Katherine Hamilton, both of Blodgett, and Paulette Bell of Bell City; and two grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death. Visitation was held from 9-11 a.m. today, Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance with Bro. Don Jolliff officiating. Interment followed in Gravel Hill Cemetery near Bell City.
Dona A. Long
Dona A. Long, daughter of the late Ben F. Harmon and Molly Cook Harmon, was born March 12, 1912 at Lamar, Ark. and died in the Springfield Rehab Healthcare at Springfield, Mo. on Jan. 16, 2002 at the age of 89. Mrs. Long was a member of the Bernie Nazarene Church in Bernie, a homemaker, a resident of Springfield and formerly of Bernie. She was united in marriage to Ben Calvin Long on Dec. 14, 1935 at Hagarville, Ark. Mr. Long preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 1969. Survivors include four sons, Huey P. Long of Kansas City, Kan., Ben Harmon Long of Bernie, Douglas Wayne Long of Satanta, Kan. and Stephen Long of Bernie; two daughters, Mary E. Long of St. Louis and Sylvia K. Sneed of Springfield, Mo.; one brother, Orville Harmon of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Bessie Rowbottom of Lamar, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers. Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie from 5 - 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19 in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don Wells officiating. Interment will follow at the Bernie Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Bernie in charge of arrangements.
Beulah Smith
Beulah Gladys Smith of Doniphan, was born Jan. 16, 1915 in the Pratt Community in Ripley County and died Jan. 16, 2002 at the Current River Nursing Center in Doniphan at the age of 87. Mrs. Smith formerly resided in Poplar Bluff and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling. On Aug. 12, 1933 she was united in marriage to James Ezra Ray and he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1972. In 1978, she married Earl Smith and he also preceded her in death in 1988. Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Pennington of Doniphan and Deborah Hubbard of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one half-brother, Dewey Ward of Palm Springs, Calif.; and one sister, Annie Smiley of Weatherford, Texas. Visitation will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 at Cotrell Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. in the Cotrell Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Schremp officiating. Interment will follow at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Cotrell Funeral Service of Poplar Bluff in charge of arrangements.
Chester Simmons, Jr.
Chester Simmons, Jr., fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church on Monday, March 4, 2002. He was awarded 17 citations during his 20 year career in the United States Army. Survivors include his wife, Eugenie M. Simmons; one daughter, Dr. Patricia Simmons; and one brother, Lloyd Wayne Simmons of Cape Girardeau. Funeral services with full military honors were held at National Cemetery Chapel, Jefferson Barracks, Mo., today, Wednesday, March 6 at 1 p.m. with Stygar Dreh-Mann-Harral Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
Hazel Brown
Hazel Lucille Brown of Chaffee, the daughter of the late Dwight and Grace Hitt Brown, was born April 12, 1921 at Arbor and died Jan. 16, 2002 at her home at the age of 80. Hazel was a machine operator at Thorngate Company for several years. She is survived by one brother, Marshal Brown of Livermore, Ky. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers. Visitation will be held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Friday, Jan. 18 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Morgan Funeral Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the Morgan Memorial Park in Advance with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of arrangements.
Jerry Lane
Walter William "Jerry" Lane, son of the late J.B. Lane and Ruble Snider Lane, was born on Feb. 17, 1942, at Essex and died in his residence at Hazelwood on Friday, March 14, 2003, at the age of 61. He was of the Baptist faith, a retired employee of Ford Motor Company at Hazelwood, had previously served in the National Guard, a resident of Hazelwood, formerly of Essex. Survivors include one brother, Rick Lane of Essex; and three sisters, LaNeal Weidenbenner of Belleville, Ill., Shelba Mofield and Hazel Mouser, both of Dexter. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2003, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Phil Warren officiating. Interment followed in the Dexter Cemetery. Memorials may be made to charity of donor's choice.
