Johnnie Oliver
Johnnie Lee "Big John" Oliver, the son of Leora Brewington Oliver and the late Herbert Cecil Oliver, was born in Canalou on May 24, 1944 and died at the Missouri Southern Healthcare Facility in Dexter on Dec. 21, 2001, at the age of 57. Mr. Oliver had lived in Bloomfield since 1977. He was a member of the Mt. Zion-Walker General Baptist Church near Bloomfield, a member of the Dexter Elks Lodge and a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Korea. On Oct. 3, 1970 he was united in marriage to Karen Shockley in Canalou, she survives of the home. Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Juliana Oliver of Bloomfield; by his mother, Leora Oliver of Essex; and by one sister, Cloetta (Corky) Razer of Essex. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jo Anne Bell. Visitation will be held at Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter on Wednesday, Dec. 26 from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Zion-Walker General Baptist Church, near Bloomfield, with Rev. Bill Pennington and Rev. Bob Holland, both of Bloomfield, officiating. Interment will follow in the Matthews Cemetery in Matthews with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.
Bobby Masters
Bobby G. Masters, 64, the son of the late Jesse and Ethel Sullivan Masters, was born on June 11, 1938, at Portageville and died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Anna Henry Nursing Home in Edwardsville, Ill. He was a maintenance mechanic with McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis for 31 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of Wood River congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and a veteran of the U.S. Army. On March 21, 1964, he was married to Evelyn "Wanda" Berrong, at Wood River, Ill., and she survives of the home. Other survivors include one daughter, Carol Bickman of Wood River, Ill.; one son, Michael Masters of Decatur, Ill.; one sister, Dorothy Norman of Advance; one brother, Ray Masters of Godfrey. He was preceded in death by four brothers. Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, Ill. Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Marks Mortuary with Mr. Tom Geisen officiating. Interment will follow at Berrong Cemetery in Gipsy with a commital service at 1:30 p.m.
James R. Pflasterer
James R. Pflasterer, 51, of Bloomfield, was born April 18, 1951, in Red Bud, Ill., the son of the late Genevieve Pflasterer, and died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter. Mr. Pflasterer was a retired construction worker. He was of the Baptist faith. On Sept. 3, 1978, at Tilden, he was united in marriage to Linda Hargis, and she survives of the home. Other survivors include one son, Charles Pflasterer of Bloomfield; one daughter, Susan Goodwin of Dexter; one step-daughter, Robin Boswell of Puxico; one brother, Bruce Pflasterer of Tilden, Ill.; five sisters, Joyce Prest of Chester, Ill., Shirley Shaw, Beverly Clothammer, Carolyn Smith and Jeannie Ballheimier, all of Tilden, Ill.; and three grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death. Visitation was held from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Bro. John Tolbert officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Ridge Cemetery near Advance.
Ollie B. McRoy
Ollie Bea McRoy, daughter of the late Clumb and May Hester Pruitt, was born at Bloomfield on Oct. 9, 1912 and died at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter on Dec. 23, 2001, at the age of 89. Mrs. McRoy was a life-long resident of Bloomfield and a charter member of the First General Baptist Church in Bloomfield. She worked at Pepper's Bakery in Bloomfield for 25 years and later worked for Dr. Beckett in Bloomfield. On Sept. 26, 1926 she was united in marriage to Bud McRoy, he preceded her in death on March 23, 1997. Survivors include one son, Edward McRoy of Bloomfield; one brother, Bob Pruitt of Wappapello; one sister, Rosa Lee Dickerson of Flint, Mich.; one grandson, Dallas McRoy of Bloomfield; two granddaughters, Darlene Bowling and Tresia Barnes, both of Bloomfield; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Other relatives and many friends survive to mourn her passing. Visitation will be held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield from 6 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. at the First General Baptist Church in Bloomfield with Rev. Kevin Eskew officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery near Bloomfield with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home of Bloomfield in charge of all arrangements.
Lorene Landers
Lorene D. Landers, daughter of the late John Delbert George and Lola Alexander George, was born on Aug. 23, 1927 at Hope, Ark. and died at her residence in Dexter on Dec. 22, 2001, at the age of 74. Mrs. Landers was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Dexter, a former florist in Eureka, Calif. and a resident of Dexter. She was united in marriage to Elvin E. Landers on Dec. 17, 1965 at Arcata, Calif. Mr. Landers survives of the home in Dexter. Besides her husband, she is survived by one step-daughter, Delores Jean Reeder of McKinleyville, Calif.; by three brothers, D.L. George of Olive Branch, Miss., Geraldean George of Hot Springs, Ark. and Hershel Ray George of Nesbit, Miss.; by one sister, Patsy Blakely of Benton, Ark.; by three step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one step-son, Elvin Eugene Landers, Jr. and one sister in infancy. Visitation was held at the Rainey Funeral Home in Dexter from 5:30 - 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24 in the Rainey Funeral Chapel with Rev. Keith Garland officiating. Interment followed in the Dexter Cemetery with Rainey Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.
James McGhee
James Glen McGhee, son of the late Guy McGhee and Ida Boyt McGhee, was born March 7, 1920, at Piggott, Ark., and died in the St. Joseph Healthcare at St. Charles on Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the age of 82. Mr. McGhee was a member of the First Baptist Church in Piggott, Ark., a former carpenter, a former resident of Poplar Bluff, Piggott, and a current resident of Bernie. Survivors include three sons, Glen Edward McGhee of O'Fallon, Mike Eugene McGhee of Defiance, and Jeffrey Lynn McGhee of St. Charles; one daughter, Jannette Phillips of Defiance; one brother, W.T. McGhee of Poplar Bluff; five sisters, Alma Daugherty and Ruby Jane Batson, both of Poplar Bluff, Mary Ruth Cordova, Billie Jean Wicknor and Wanda Lee Tressler, all of Grants Pass, Ore.; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Darrell Ray McGhee; two brothers, Evan McGhee and Laymon Lee McGhee; one sister, Zelza McGhee. Visitation was held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. Funeral services were then conducted at 1:00 p.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Chapel in Bernie. Rev. Clifford Wray officiated. Interment followed in the Piggott Cemetery.
Nina Arnold
Nina Arnold, daughter of the late Albert Andrew Anderson and Nettie Blagg Anderson, was born on Nov. 19, 1915, at Aid and departed this life in the St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City on Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at the age of 87. Mrs. Arnold was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Dexter, a long-time business woman and active in the community. She was past president of the Soroptomist Club, the Business and Professional Women's Club, local and regional chapters of the P.T.A., past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star #311, instrumental in the development of the Little Miss Dexter Contest and other organizations. After her birth in Aid, she moved to Red and Bernie and at the age of 10, her family moved to Dexter where she resided for 77 years. She was united in marriage to Claude Arnold on Feb. 14, 1951, at Malvern, Ark. Mr. Arnold preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1995. Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Luetje and husband Charles of Olathe, Kan.; one step-daughter, Claudine Reak of Albuquerque, N.M.; three grandchildren, Chucker Luetje, Andrew Luetje and wife Jana, all of Kansas City, Kan., and Kevin Luetje and wife Zehra of Sarasota, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Zainab, Jacob and Stone Luetje, all of Sarasota, Fla., Sam and George Luetje, both of Kansas City, Mo.; three step-grandchildren, Linda Puzak and husband David of Albuquerque, N.M., Dana Ferguson and husband David of Big Sandy, Texas, and Beverly Carson and husband Christopher of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven step-great-grandchildren, Michael, Jerrod and Sara Puzak, Michaela, Christopher, and David Carson, all of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lecia Ferguson of Big Sandy, Texas; one sister, Opal Montgomery of Thayer; and one brother, James "Pot" Anderson of Dexter. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Anderson and two sisters in infancy. Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 6-8 p.m. today, Friday, March 21, 2003. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Vaughn Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
Bob Gramling
Bob Gramling, son of the late Estes and Cordie Mays Gramling, was born in Walcott, Ark., on Oct. 17, 1933, and died at his home at Wappapello on Friday, Dec. 21, at the age of 68. Mr. Gramling was a former resident of St. Louis before moving to Wappapello in 1986. He was employed by General Motors for 30 years. He owned and operated Direct Advertising Publications in Wappapello. He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Shook and was a third degree Mason and member of the Eastern Star. On April 30, 1983, he married Barbara Dover in St. Louis County. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Gramling of Wappapello; two sons, Phillip Gramling of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael Gramling of Kennett; one daughter, Debra Pierce of Kennett; two stepsons, Richard Wadlow and Marty Fancher, both of St. Louis; one stepdaughter, Tammy Kutscher of Poplar Bluff; three brothers, Stan Gramling of Jonesboro, Ark., Eugene and Malcolm Gramling, both of Kennett; three sisters, Maxine Ward of Aurora, Aledene Tinkle of Kennett, and Madonna Stewart of Walcott, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Other relatives and many friends also survive. He was preceded in death by one brother, Frankie Gramling. Visitation was held beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001 at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Puxico. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, in the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Puxico with Rev. Lee Roy Hefner of McGee officiating. Burial will follow in the Elder Cemetery at Campbell with Watkins and Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements.
