Tom McGowen

Thomas Wesley McGowen, the son of the late Willie and Janie Craft McGowen, was born in Dudley on July 27, 1923 and died at the Puxico Nursing Center in Puxico on Oct. 3, 2001, at the age of 78.
Mr. McGowen had lived all his life in the Puxico area. He was a retired bus driver and custodian, and had worked for the Puxico public schools for 32 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Puxico, the VFW Post #7822 in Puxico and a life member of of the DAV. In 1999 he was inducted into the Southeast Missouri Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a veteran of the United States Army and had served in the European, African and Eastern Theaters, receiving the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and three overseas bars.
On June 15, 1946 he was united in marriage to Evalee Maddox in Poplar Bluff, she survives of the home in Puxico. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Vicki Barnfield and Robin Martinez, both of Puxico; one son, Rick McGowen of Puxico; by five grandsons; by three step-grandchildren; by two great-grandsons; by seven step great-grandchildren; and by one brother, Cecil McGowen of Puxico. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico on Thursday, Oct. 4 after 6 p.m. A VFW service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. in the Watkins & Sons Chapel with Bro. Terry Stockman of Sikeston officiating. Interment will follow in the Rock Hill Cemetery near Puxico with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of all arrangements.

Patricia Bell

Patricia Bell, daughter of M.E. "Bud" Bresee and the late Marie Green Bresee, was born at Wamego, Ka., on May 2, 1948 and died in St. Louis on Sept.28, 2001, at the age of 53. Mrs. Bell was a former resident of the Bloomfield community. She was married to Danny Bell. She is survived by her husband Danny Bell, of St. Louis; her father and step-mother, M.E. "Bud" and Coleen Bresee of Haines City, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Michelle Chism of Bloomfield; one step-daughter and son-in-law, Tonya and David Shaner of Suffork, Va.; five grandchildren: Robbie, Rizer and Jewell Chism of Bloomfield; and Jordan and Alexis Shaner of Suffork, Va. Besides her mother, she was preceded in death two brothers, Eddie and Larry Bresee. Visitation was held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield on Mondday, Oct. 1, from 6 - 8 p.m. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel in Bloomfield with Rev. Kevin Eskew of Bloomfield officiating. Interment followed in the Bloomfield Cemetery with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home of Bloomfield in charge of all arrangements.

Courtney Drew

Courtney Maxine Drew, 9, was born April 22, 1992 in Cape Girardeau, the daughter of Jeff and the late Tressie Barnes Drew, and died Sept. 29, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Morehouse. Her mother, Tressie, also died in the accident. She was in the fourth grade at Richland Elementary School in Essex and attended Big Ridge Baptist Church. Courtney is survived by her father, Jeff Drew and one sister, Bethany Drew, both of the home in Canalou; by her maternal grandmother, Bernice Barnes, also of Canalou; by her paternal grandmother, Nadas Drew of Vanduser; and her paternal great-grandmother, Maxine Hale of Vanduser. Visitation was held on Monday, Oct. 1, from 5-8 p.m. at the Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Ponder Funeral Chapel in Sikeston with Rev. Jack Lewis officiating. Interment followed in the Garden of Memories Cemetery at Sikeston with Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston in charge of all arrangements.

Robert Powers

Robert Henry Powers, the son of the late Henry Raymond and Ellen Gehlken Powers, was born in Sedalia on Nov. 3, 1927 and died at the Mark Twain Caring Center in Poplar Bluff on Sept. 28, 2001, at the age of 73. Mr. Powers had lived in Sedalia and High Ridge until moving to Puxico in 1989. He was a retired mechanic and had worked for 42 years with the Missouri Pacific Railroad. He was a member of the Wappapello Lions Club and the Providence Missionary Baptist Church near Puxico. On Feb. 28, 1948 he was first married to Maurine Avis Bushey in Sedalia, she preceded him in death on April 23, 1973. On Sept. 23, 1977, he was married to Mildred Riney Walker in Puxico. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Powers of Puxico; by one daughter, Linda Faye Powers of Sedalia; by one brother, Marvin Powers of Sedalia; and by one sister, Katheryn Bell of Warsaw. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Larry Ray Powers. Visitation was held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico after 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30. Funeral services were held in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Puxico on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. with Elder Ernie Cate and Jerry Park, both of Puxico, and Elder Don Adams of Matthews, officiating. Graveside services were held on Monday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia. Interment followed with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of all arrangements.

Samuel D. Woolard

Samuel D. Woolard was born June 27, 1955 at Dexter and died March 9, 2002 at his home near Mill Spring, at the age of 46. Mr. Woolard had lived in the Piedmont area since 1966. He graduated from SEMO in 1977, with a degree in agriculture, had farmed in the Mill Spring area and loved to hunt and fish. Survivors include three brothers, James Gilbert Woolard of Puxico, Thomas Kim Woolard of Piedmont and Earl Vaden Woolard of Mill Spring; and five sisters, Ruth Annette Carter of Cardwell, Mo., Carolyn Fay Keathley of Riverside, Calif., Daphne Jean Richardson of Frenchtown, Mont., Reba Ethel Lam of Wichita Falls, Texas and Florence Renee Hunt of Topeka, Kan. Visitation will be held at the Morrison-Worley Funeral Home in Piedmont on Wednesday, March 13 from 6 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 14 at 10 a.m. in the Morrison-Worley Funeral Chapel with Rob Hunt officiating. Committal and interment will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 14 at the Sadler's Chapel Cemetery in Dexter with Morrison-Worley Funeral Home of Piedmont in charge of all arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Home, Inc. in care of Morrison-Worley Funeral Home in Piedmont.

Loedith Shipley

Loedith Ann Shipley, the daughter of the late Mack and Lena Morgan Colvin, was born in Manila, Ark., on Jan. 24, 1915, and died at the Beverly Health Care in Bloomfield on Jan. 4, 2003, at the age of 87. Mrs. Shipley had been a resident of Bloomfield for many years. She was a retired cook for the Hickory House Restaurant in Dexter. She was affiliated with the Bible Tabernacle Church in Bloomfield. On March 2, 1940, she was united in marriage to R.A. Shipley at New Madrid. Surviving are her husband, R.A. Shipley of Sikeston; two sons, Jerry Chisholm of Advance and Steve Shipley of Sikeston; four daughters, Bonnie Kemper of Arnold, Lois McNeil of Arbyrd, Elizabeth Tison of Bloomsdale, and Jennolia Leathers of Dexter; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jennivee Chisholm, and five brothers and four sisters. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Bro. Cotus James of Bloomfield officiating. Interment followed in the Bloomfield Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Tressie Drew

Tressie Drew was born Dec. 1, 1962 in Sacramento, Calif., the daughter of Bernice Bohannon Barnes of Canalou and the late Paul Barnes, Sr., and died Sept. 29. 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Morehouse. Her daughter, Courtney, also died in the accident. On June 18, 1983, she was united in marriage to Jeff Drew, he survives of the home in Canalou. She operated the Morehouse Cafe and was a member of the Big Ridge Baptist Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Bethany Drew of the home; by three brothers, Paul Barnes, Jr. of Canalou, and her twin brothers, Don and Ron Barnes of Sikeston; by one half-sister, Kay Seiler of Sikeston; by her mother-in-law, Nadas Drew of Vanduser; and her grandmother-in-law, Maxine Hale of Vanduser. Visitation was held on Monday, Oct. 1 from 5-8 p.m. at the Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. in the Ponder Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jack Lewis officiating. Interment followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery at Sikeston with Ponder Funeral Home of Sikeston in charge of all arrangements.

Alma B. Walles

Alma Gail Britt Walles was born April 23, 1950, the daughter of Mary Grindstaff Britt and Clarence Britt at Risco, and died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Baylor University Medical Center Hospital, Dallas, at the age of 52. She had been fighting her battle with leukemia. She was a member of Reklaw Baptist Church, where her husband has been pastor for the past 14 years. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Walles; a son, Phillip Britt Walles; one daughter, Melissa Caroline Walles; and one grandson. Her surviving brothers and sisters are Norman Britt, Enid, Okla., Laura Franklin, San Marcos, Johnnie Britt, Clarkston, Mich., Mary Adams, Dexter, Shirley McCabe, San Marcos, Helen Wright, Kansas City, Loretta Wilcox, Howell, Mich.. Visitation was held beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the Dickie Allen Funeral Home, Highway 204, Cushing. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at the Reklaw Baptist Church in Reklaw. Officiating were Rev. Mike Smith, Rev. Newton Hambrick, Rev. Don Copeland, and Rev. Ed Williamson. Interment followed at the Walker's Chapel Cemetery near Reklaw.
