Raymond Gaines, Jr.
Raymond Gaines, Jr., the son of the late Raymond W. and Vergie Rhema Lane Gaines, was born in Dexter on March 15, 1937 and died at the Missouri Southern Healthcare facility in Dexter on Oct. 25, 2001, at the age of 64. Mr. Gaines had lived in Dexter all his life. He was a former employee of the IXL Manufacturing Company in Bernie and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by two daughters, Sondra K. Gaines of Texas and Rhonda Gaines of Alabama; by three brothers, Billy, Leon and Rick Gaines, all of Dexter; by three sisters, Betty Moore and Peggy Evans, both of Dexter, and Bonnie Brewer of Essex; and by three grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Wanda McRoy.
Visitation was held on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Doyle Corlew officiating. Interment followed in the Armstead-Dowdy Cemetery near Dexter with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.
Calob Wright
Calob Wright, infant son of William Dale and Laura Michelle Comstock Wright, died shortly after birth on March 19, 2003, at the Three Rivers Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Johnathan Tyler Wright of Dexter; one sister, Brianna Wright of Dexter; maternal grandparents, Jimmy and Charissa Comstock of Dexter; paternal grandparents, Janet Barrick Knight of Bloomfield and Tommy and Lori Wright of Dexter; maternal great-grandparents, Kenneth and Carolyn Standridge of Wappapello and Earnest Kennedy of Desloge; paternal great-grandparents, Jewell Barrick of Vanduser, M.L. Barrick of Bascom, Fla., and Thelma Wright of Clarkton. His maternal great-grandmother, Betty Comstock Kennedy, and paternal great-grandfather, Cleo Wright, preceded him in death. There will be graveside services at 2 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Sikeston Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Bruce Pittman, pastor of the Faith Baptist Church in Wappapello, will officiate. The Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston is in charge of arrangements.
Almeta Sides
Almeta Sides, the daughter of Marie Dempsy Dowdy and the late Jack Dowdy, was born in Clarksville, Ark. on May 12, 1938 and died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on Oct. 25, 2001, at the age of 63. Mrs. Sides had resided in Bloomfield the past 5 years and was a homemaker. She was united in marriage to Leon Sides in 1971, he survives of the home. Other survivors include one son, Billy J. Mitchell of Dexter; four daughters, Norma Lawhorn of Ill., Marilyn Maronies of Calif., LeVeta Byrd and Rita Clawson, both of Dexter; her mother, Marie Dowdy of Dexter; two brothers, Richard Dowdy of Dexter and Larry Dowdy of Tenn.; four sisters, Ivy Horn and Lovena Dowdy, both of Bloomfield, Nancy Pullum of Dexter, and Louise Oliver of Mich.; 10 grandchildren, Londa Tarver, Charles Roper, Chris Roper, Michael Lawhorn, Missy Lawhorn, Christina Lawhorn, Ethan Green, Cherish Green, Karen Maronies and Tim Maronies; and four great-grandchildren, Steven Tarver, Zachary Tarver, Mathew Tarver and Dakota Mason. Besides her father, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Josephine Williamson; four brothers, Bill Spence, Edward Dowdy, Jimmy Dowdy and John Dowdy; and one sister, Alice Faye Dowdy. Visitation was held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 - 10:30 a.m. Graveside services were held on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. at the Essex Cemetery with Rev. Walter Spencer of Campbell officiating. Interment followed in Essex Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.
Nondes Busby
Nondes D. Busby, daughter of the late Walter Pitman and Ora Thomas, was born on Dec. 16, 1915 at East Prairie and died in the Beverly Health Rehabilitation Center at Dexter on Oct. 25, 2001, at the age of 85.
Mrs. Busby was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Dexter, owner of Busby Realty, and a resident of Dexter. She was united in marriage to Lowrie "L.T." Busby on Oct. 23, 1934 in Piggott, Ark. Mr. Busby preceded her in death on June 26, 1997.
Survivors include one son, Leon R. Busby of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Walford Pitman; and by one sister, Erma Lain.
Visitation will be held at the Rainey Funeral Home in Dexter on Friday, Oct. 26 from 5 - 7 p.m. Memorial service will be held in the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Fred Leist officiating. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund in Dexter.
Harold L. Shipman
Harold L. Shipman, son of the late Claud Shipman and Ada Bell Myers Shipman, was born on Jan. 22, 1922 in Hornersville, Mo. an died in the Missouri Southern Healthcare at Dexter on Oct. 25, 2001, at the age of 79. Mr. Shipman was a member of the Mulberry Missionary Baptist Church in Dexter, worked for the state conservation as a Fire Fighter in Bollinger County, a member of the Neighborhood Watch, and a resident of Dexter. Survivors include two sons, Claud and Christopher Shipman of Dexter; three daughters, Carol Fouts of Columbia, Fern Shepherd of Essex, and Connitta Beeghly of St. Charles; one sister, Fern McClure of Mesa, Ariz.; by 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Rainey Funeral Home in Dexter on Friday, Oct. 26 from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Rainey Funeral Chapel on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. with Rev. David Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Puxico Cemetery in Puxico with Rainey Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.
Raleigh Pence
Raleigh Pence of Advance, the son of the late Ealy E. and Manda Van Cleve Pence, was born Feb. 9, 1925 at Wolfe County, Ky. and died at the Advance Nursing Center on Oct. 24, 2001, at the age of 76. Mr. Pence was a retired dairyman. He worked for Galloway Dairy Co. in Neenah, Wis. for 20 years, was a member of the Teamster Union for 22 years and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Advance.
He was united in marriage to Margaret McClain on May 27, 1944 at Newport, Ky., she survives of the home. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Survivors include one son, Raleigh James Pence of Advance; by two daughters, Saundra Weitz of Oshkosh, Wis. and Janice Pence of Iola, Wis.; by two brothers, Alfred Pence of Eureka, Wis. and John Pence of Portage, Wis.; by three sisters, Gertrude Moore of Zenia, Ohio, Ellen Farra and Mollie Huggins, both of Dayton, Ohio; by six grandchildren; and by eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Morgan Funeral Chapel on Friday, Oct. 26 at 12 p.m. with Rev. Brad Moore officiating. Interment will be held at the Eureka Cemetery in Eureka, Wis. with graveside rites on Monday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of all arrangements.
Nina Ferrell
Nina Ferrell, the daughter of the late Allen B. and Elvada Rustin Andrews, was born in Fredonia, Ky. on April 9, 1914 and died at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston on Oct. 22, 2001, at the age of 87. Mrs. Ferrell was a homemaker and had lived in Morehouse most of her life. She was united in marriage to Paul L. Ferrell, Sr. on March 10, 1934, he preceded her in death on May 13, 1988. Survivors include one son, Barry D. Ferrell of Morehouse; one daughter, Gail Richards of Dexter; and one grandchild. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Paul L. Ferrell, Jr. on May 17, 1999; by one step-son, Doyle Ferrell on Feb. 10, 1978; by one brother, Ancell Andrews; and by one sister, Alta M. Hicks. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Morehouse on Thursday, Oct. 25 after 1:30 p.m. Graveside funeral services will be held on Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. in the Essex Cemetery with Rev. Frank Breeden of Morehouse officiating. Interment will follow with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Morehouse in charge of all arrangements.
E.J. Manuel
E.J. Manuel of Rector, Ark., son of the late Mary Moss Manuel, was born May 5, 1939 in Paris, Texas and died Oct. 22, 2001 at the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center at the age of 62. Mr. Manuel was a factory worker for Arly Home Fashions in Leachville, Ark., was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Dexter. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Cox Manuel, she survives of the home in Rector. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Larry Manuel of Dexter; by one daughter, Paula Richardson of Piggott, Ark.; by two step-sons, Steve Richey and Keith Richey, both of Marmaduke, Ark.; and by 10 grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Heath Funeral Home in Paragould, Ark. from 5:30 -8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. Funeral services will be conducted in the Heath Colonial Chapel at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 with Rev. Charles Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery in Paragould with Heath Funeral Home in charge of all arrangements.
