Mariam Aslin
Mariam Eleanor Aslin, daughter of the late Venton and Pearl Parks Martin, was born at Bloomfield on March 15, 1931 and died at the Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter on Sept. 8, 2001, at the age of 70. Mrs. Aslin had spent most of her life in the Bloomfield Community. She was a member of the Hills General Baptist Church near Bloomfield and a member of the Bloomfield Order of the Eastern Star. On March 19, 1949 she was married to Elvin Aslin, he preceded her in death on April 10, 1999. She was also preceded in death by one son, Gary Aslin; one grandson, Curtis Aslin; and one brother, Elbert Martin. Survivors include one son, Kyle Aslin of Bloomfield; five brothers, Wayne Martin of Riverview, Fla., Richard Martin of Bloomfield, Jim Martin of Wayne, Mich., Tom Martin of Little Rock, Ark., and Dean Martin of Plant City, Fla.; one sister, Freida Lee of Dexter; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel in Bloomfield with Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery near Bloomfield. Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield in charge of arrangements.
Richard "Toby" Walker
Richard "Toby" Walker of Arab, the son of the late William and Margaret Oliver Walker, was born Dec. 22, 1944 at Zalma and died March 10, 2002 at the Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, at the age of 57. Toby worked for the local #1770 Carpenters Union for 35 years, was a farmer and a veteran of the United States Army. He was united in marriage to Lucille Boyd on March 2, 1968 at Arab, she survives of the home. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Kevin Walker of Puxico; one daughter, Kim Nanney of Holts Summit, Mo.; by four brothers, LeRoy Walker and Bud Walker, both of McGee, Bob Walker of Faunsdale, Ala. and Ted Walker of Advance; by two sisters, Billie Jo Morris of St. Louis and Ann Welker of Brownwood; and four grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Visitation was held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Monday, March 11 from 5 - 8 p.m. Graveside services were conducted, today, Tuesday, March 12 at 11 a.m. at the Stephens Cemetery near McGee with Ruth Doublin officiating. Interment followed with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of arrangements.
Paul Melvin Wethington
Paul Melvin Wethington, son of the late Hudson Green Wethington and Bertha Condict Wethington of Gray Ridge, was born Nov. 14, 1927 near Essex and died on Sept. 4, 2001 in San Diego, Calif., at the age of 73. He served in the United States Navy as an enlisted man for nine years, as an officer for 15 years and retired on June 30, 1971. In 1954 he was united in marriage to Fredda June Case of Morehouse, who survives of the home. Besides his parents, Mr. Wethington was preceded in death by three brothers, Hudson Max Wethington of Essex, Glenn Clayton Wethington of Gray Ridge and Russell Ervin Wethington of Arlington, Texas; by two sisters, Leola Maxine Wethington of Essex, a twin sister, Pauline Mae Wethington Clanton of Shelbyville, Tenn. and one nephew, Glenn Clayton Wethington, Jr. of Poplar Bluff. He is survived by one son, Paul Steven and Nancy Wethington and daughters, Natalie Marie Schwartz, Stephanie Renee and Madison Necole of West Chester, Ohio; five brothers, Fred and Shirley Wethington, Donald and Gloria Wethington, both of Bloomfield, Elzie and Wanda Wethington of Dexter, M.B. and Katherine Wethington of Sikeston, David and Gail Wethington of Arlington, Texas; one sister, Linda and Sam Curtis of Hillsboro, Ill.; nine nephews and 11 nieces. A Military Memorial Service at the Stars and Stripes Cemetery in Bloomfield is being planned for a later date.
Roscoe Hazel
Roscoe "Bud" Hazel was born Nov. 1, 1926 at Salcedo, the son of the late Roscoe and Rosie Harlow Hazel, and died Aug. 24, 2001 at his home in Advance, at the age of 74. Bud was united in marriage to Mildred Wallace Hazel on July 18, 1945 at Advance, she survives of the home. Mr. Hazel was a retired owner/operator of a sawmill in Bell City. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, one grandson and one granddaughter. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Ben Hazel of Bloomfield, Charlie and Bill Hazel, both of Advance; six daughters, Louise Ford and Dorothy Sturgeon, both of Advance, Alice Wright of Memphis, Tenn., Brenda McKenzie and Regina Ulloa, both of Sturgeon, Miss. and Sharon Herkenhoff of Hazelwood; 24 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Visitation was held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Sunday, Aug. 26 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services were held in the Morgan Funeral Chapel on Monday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bill Sargent officiating. Interment followed in the New Morley Cemetery in Morley with Morgan Funeral Home in Advance in charge of arrangements.
John C. James
John C. "Muck" James of Delta, was born on March 15, 1926 at Hurricane Fork, Mo., the son of the late Henry and Annie Francis James, and died on Sept. 17, 2001 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, at the age of 75. John was a mechanic for McDonald Concrete in Cape Girardeau, was a Veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army and was of the Baptist faith. He was united in marriage to Nellie Mae Wilfong at Piggott, Ark. on July 16, 1949, she survives of the home. Other survivors include three daughters, Mary Schott of Perkins, Janet DeBrock of Leopold and Linda James of Morley; two brothers, Charles James of Chaffee and Hadley James of Arbor; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 4 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jessie Long officiating. Interment will follow in the Dongola Cemetery with Morgan Funeral Home of Advance in charge of all arrangements.
Wilson Watkins
Wilson Watkins, the son of the late James Wesley and Mexi Watkins, was born in Middleton, Tenn. on Feb. 22, 1912, and died at the Missouri Southern Healthcare Facility in Dexter on Sept. 17, 2001, at the age of 89. Mr. Watkins was a retired farmer and had also worked for 27 years at the International Shoe Co. in Dexter. He attended the New Hope General Baptist Church near Essex. On Sept. 2, 1933 he was united in marriage to Dora V. Ellison, she preceded him in death on Aug. 4, 1993. He is survived by one daughter, Billie Ledbetter of Essex; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Imogene Christian of Poplar Bluff. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Cecil Watkins. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel in Dexter on Friday, Sept. 21 at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Doyle Corlew officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.
Raleigh A. Hitt
Raleigh A. Hitt, Jr. of Arbor, was born Nov. 15, 1913 at Arbor, the son of the late Raleigh Hitt, Sr. and Mary Kidd, and died Sept. 14, 2001 at his home, at the age of 87. Raleigh was owner and operator of Arbor Vault Co. in Arbor for 30 years. He was united in marriage to Virginia Heuring on Sept. 26, 1945, she preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 1988. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Visitation was held at the Morgan Funeral Home in Advance on Sunday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Funeral services were conducted in the Morgan Funeral Chapel on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Vyron Yount officiating. Interment followed at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Advance. Morgan Funeral Home of Advance was in charge of arrangements.
Opal Chadwell
Opal Riley Chadwell, daughter of the late John Riley and Iva Cooper Riley, was born on Oct. 6, 1909 at Powe and died in the Three Rivers Healthcare South Campus in Poplar Bluff on March 10, 2002, at the age of 92. Mrs. Chadwell was a former resident of Dexter, affiliated with the Second General Baptist Church in Dexter, and a housewife that loved to work in her flower garden. She was united in marriage to Elmer Chadwell on July 31, 1927 in Bernie. Mr. Chadwell preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 1989. Survivors include one daughter, Vivian Allen of Poplar Bluff. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Prentice Chadwell; by four brothers; three sisters; and one grandson. Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 12. Funeral services will be conducted in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, March 13 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Roy Standfill officiating. Interment will follow at the Bernie Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
