Cecil Vance
PIEDMONT -- Cecil Vance, 77, of Piedmont died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.
Mr. Vance was born Nov. 19, 1926, at Egypt, Ark. He moved to Piedmont and graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1944. He was a merchant marine and served from 1945 until he retired as a Second Officer in 1974.
On Nov. 12, 1992, he married
Maxine Hampton in Doniphan. She survives.
Other survivors include four children, Connie Cross of San Diego, Calif., Cecil Vance, Norman Vance, and Johnny Robinson, all of Slidell, La.; four step-children, Mike Warren, Donna Evans, and Vicky Hampton, all of Piedmont, and Tempa Sleeper of Pleasant Shade, Tenn.; four brothers, Dale Vance of St. Charles, Clinton Vance of Jackson, Ivan Vance of Sachse, Texas and Dwight Vance of Cedar Park, Texas; 25 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Flatwoods cemetery near Piedmont. Morrison-Worley Funeral Chapel in Piedmont is in charge of arrangements.
Lillie Davis
KENNETT -- Lillie Dell Davis, 67, of Kennett died July 31, 2004, in Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center at Kennett.
Mrs. Davis was born Oct. 19, 1936, in Money, Miss. She married
Curtis Davis on Dec. 1, 1951, at Greenwood, Miss. He preceded her in death in 1996.
She was a housewife and a member of Community Temple Church of God in Christ at Kennett.
Survivors include: six daughters, Nancy Sims of Cape Girardeau, Patricia Ann Davis of Poplar Bluff, Jeanette Madoo of Jonesboro, Ark., O'Dell David, Penny Davis and Michelle Craion, all of Kennett; three sons, Curtis Davis Jr. of Kennett, Willie Davis of Greenwood, Miss. and Marvin Davis of Paducah, Ky.; 26 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillie D. Rhodes; and two brothers, Billy Brown and Sonny Brown.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Saturday in Bradshaw Funeral Home at Kennett. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with Bishop Luke Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery at Kennett.
Anna Mae Miller
FISK -- Anna Mae Miller, 80, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Miller was born March 4, 1924, in Poplar Bluff. On Dec. 25, 1946, she married
Walter "Red" Miller. He preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1978.
She had lived in the Fisk and Poplar Bluff area all of her life. She was a member of the Highland Drive Church of Christ. Mrs. Miller taught school for 45 years. She started teaching at the Old Caldonia School and continued her teaching career at Fisk and Twin Rivers until her retirement.
Survivors include a son, Russell Miller of Poplar Bluff; two brothers, Gene Sparkman of Hazelwood and Jim Sparkman of O'Fallon; five sisters, Maxine Sewell of Columbia, Lillian Griffey of Carlsbad, California, Nancy Booker of Quinlan, Texas, Glenda Anderson of Nashville, Tennessee, and Ruby Mayberry of Houston, Texas; and one granddaughter, Misty Evans of Lewisburg, West Virginia.
Visitation will be Friday at 6 p.m. at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the White-Sanders chapel with Neil Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Shain Memorial cemetery.
Della Orman
PARMA -- Della Lorene Orman, 87, of Doe Run died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, in Southbrook Skilled Nursing Center at Farmington.
Mrs. Orman was born Sept. 12, 1916, in Dexter. On Feb. 16, 1947, she married
Lealon E. Orman in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 1992.
She had lived in Parma for many years before moving to Doe Run in 1992. She was a long-time member of Parma Church of God and had been attending Assembly of God Church in Farmington. She was a former Sunday School teacher and loved working with the youth of the church. She leaves a host of friends and will be missed dearly.
Survivors include: two sons, Donald Nelson of Doe Run and Dennis Orman of Ponchatoula, La.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Parma with the Rev. Carl O'Dell officiating. Burial will be in Bernie cemetery.
Essie Vinson
DEXTER -- Essie Evans Vinson, 88, of Dexter died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, in Missouri Southern Health Care Facility in Dexter.
Mrs. Vinson was born May 11, 1916, in Maynard, Ark. On April 8, 1941, she married
Edwin Campbell Vinson in Ancel, Mo. He preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1992.
She had lived in Sikeston and Lebanon in Missouri and East Alton, Ill., before moving to Dexter in 1979. She was a member of the Dexter Church of Christ.
Surviving are: three brothers, Fowler Evans, Keiger Evans and Billy J. Evans, all of Dexter; three sisters, Theda Nydegger of Stayton, Ore., Wilma Thomasson of Mount Vernon, Ore. and Wanda Norman of Pleasantview, Utah.; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with Brother Dale Grissom officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories cemetery at Sikeston.
Georgia Clark
QULIN -- Georgia Clark, 69, of Qulin died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center
Mrs. Clark was born Feb. 20, 1935, in Fagus. She married
Carl Clark in Alton. She was a member of Fagus General Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Lynn Glaser of Mendota, Ill., and Carla Austin of Qulin; four sons, Roger Keith Fowler of Forrest City, Ark., Gary Lee Fowler of Salem, Ill., Sam Sutton of Florrisant, and James Glenn Clark of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Friday at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Qulin. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Gary Hancock officiating. Burial will be in Qulin cemetery.
Vernie Franklin Fox
Vernie Franklin Fox, 81, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.
Mr. Fox was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Clay County, Ark. He was of the Pentecostal faith, and had retired from the Baldwin Pallet Mill. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
On May 25, 1940, he married
Fleecy Mildred Foster. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1977. His parents, James Franklin and Ellen (Baxter) Fox, and one brother, Barney Fox, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Asher and husband, Gilbert, of Fairdealing, Pam Massey and husband, Terry, of Bytheville, Ark., and Kim Hutson and husband, Kevin, of Poplar Bluff; one son, Charles Fox and wife, Brenda, of Poplar Bluff; one sister, Margie Chatman of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Jesse Earl Fox of Poplar Bluff; eight grandchildren, George Asher, Randy Asher, Lisa Robinson, Jerry Fox, Kristy Smith, Caleb Massey, Shannon Hutson and Kevin Hutson; 12 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Liddie Wilkerson of Poplar Bluff.
The visitation will begin at noon Friday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Joe Lyons officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Viola Stevens
PIEDMONT -- Viola Stevens, 89, of Piedmont died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at the DePaul All Saints Hospital in St. Louis.
Mrs. Stevens was born on Sept. 4, 1914, in Poplar Bluff. She was a seamstress and attended Faith Christian Church in Piedmont. She married
George W. Malloy, and he preceded her in death in 1951. She later married
Rubin Stevens, and he preceded her in death in 1983.
Survivors include four children, Mary Lorene Cahoon and Sallye Mae Clark, both of Layton, Utah, Cari Lee Conner of Piedmont, D. Michael Stevens of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; four sisters, Hattie Mae Safferstone of Kerrville, Texas, Helen Elizabeth Selvidge of Fort Riley, Kan., Ellen Frances McMillian of Mabank, Texas, Mary Lucille Tedescuccci of Milan, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Morrison-Worley Funeral Chapel in Piedmont. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ron Clark officiating. Burial will be in Greenville cemetery.
Audrey Templeton
Audrey Vivian Templeton, 93, of Poplar Bluff died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the Cedargate Care Center in Poplar Bluff.
Mrs. Templeton was born Jan. 4, 1911, in Cape Girardeau. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women's Group and the Philathea Sunday School Class. She was a homemaker as well as an avid reader.
On Aug. 26, 1934, she married
Vernon Vineyard Templeton in Bismark. He preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Dora Haldaman; her stepmother who raised her, Hallie (Abernathy) Haldaman; a daughter, Mary Bushong on May 4, 1987, and a son-in-law, Larry Bushong, on Sept. 14, 1992.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Wells, and her husband, Elwood, of Fairfax, Va.; five grandchildren, Larry R. Bushong of Holladay, Tenn., Sherri Bushong Maxey of Bartlett, Tenn., Chris Wells of Fairfax Station, Va., Greg Wells of Ashburn, Va., and Jona Wells of Rockville, Md.; three great-grandchildren, Sam and Garrison Wells of Rockville, Md., and Colby Caldwell of Ashburn, Va.; and a brother, Oliver Haldaman of Farmington.
The visitation will begin at noon on Sunday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Kurt Schuermann officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, the Child Concern Center or the United Gospel Rescue Mission.
Byron Gabe Pointer
BERNIE -- Byron Keith "Gabe" Pointer, son of the late Gabe A. Pointer and Ida Ellen Neal Pointer, was born on Sept.11, 1927, at Bernie, Mo. and departed this life in the Malden Nursing and Rehab Center in Malden, Mo. on Aug. 2, 2004, at the age of 76.
Mr. Pointer had worked with the Missouri Highway Patrol for 32 years until his retirement having been a Commercial Vehicle Inspector, he served on the Bernie School Board for several years, had served as Police Chief of Bernie, and had always been a very active member of the community, including supporting the Bernie Mules, had served in the National Guard, was an avid golfer and was a private pilot and loved to fly. He also was a big supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a member of the Bernie Christian Church and a resident of Bernie.
He was united in marriage to Elsie Margaret Cuevas on Nov. 14, 1951, at Piggott, Ark. Mrs. Pointer survives of the home in Bernie.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert S. Barney and wife Janice of Dexter, Kent Pointer and wife Jenny of Denver; four daughters, Eleanor Marie Sherfield and husband Floyd of Hot Springs, Ark., Margaret Diane Hollis and husband Ken of Metairie, La., Ivette Rothschild and husband Andy of Clayton, Marla Vanesa Pointer of Denver; two sisters, Thelma Plympton of Waterford, Mich., Jean Yeager of Dexter; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Pointer and Henry Pointer; and four sisters, Eunice Reeves, Julia Burke, Nora Pointer, and Dora Pointer.
Friends may call at the Bernie High School Cafeteria in Bernie from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, 2004. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bernie High School Cafeteria with the Rev. Keith Warner and Rev. Van Spry officiating. Interment will follow in the Bernie cemetery.
Memorials can be made to Stoddard County Children's Home, Bernie Christian Church or American Cancer Society.
