Walter Whiffen
Walter Landy Whiffen, 90, of Poplar Bluff died Monday June 21, 2004, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Whiffen was born March 2, 1914, at Rombauer. He was of the Pentecostal faith and enjoyed gardening. He was retired from the maintenance department of the Missouri State Forestry Service.
On Aug. 6, 1962, he married
Dicie Hollis in Poplar Bluff. She survives.
Other survivors include a half-sister, Dorothy Barnes of Poplar Bluff and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Kent Miller officiating and the Revs. Orville Wilkerson and Ralph Mayes assisting. Burial will be in the Rombauer cemetery.
Rev. Vaudie Humphrey
CORNING -- Rev. Vaudie Humphrey, 82, of Paragould, Ark. died Sunday June 20, 2004, at Greene Acres Nursing Home in Paragould.
Rev. Humphrey was born July 25, 1921, in Delaplaine, Ark. and was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Oak Grove Heights, Ark. He retired in 1991 after 30 years of service as the United Pentecostal minister.
On July 22, 1939, he married
Argie Verneal Humphrey at Peach Orchard, Ark. She preceded him in death Feb. 6, 2000.
Survivors include one son, Rev. Edgar Humphrey of Paragould, Ark.; four sisters, Arbie May Clayton and Maxine Foster, both of Paragould, Irene Cook of Rainbow City, Ala. and Jewel Conley of Morrilton, Ark.; four brothers, Virgil Humphrey of Rockford, Ill., Clestes Humphrey of Jonesboro, Ark., J. C. Humphrey of Sacramento, Calif. and Jock Humphrey of Merol Loma, Calif.; two grandchildren; seven grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Ermert Funeral Home in Corning, Ark. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Billy Snow officiating. Burial will be in the Pirtle cemetery in Peach Orchard, Ark.
Patty Thomason
DEXTER -- Patty Ann Thomason, 52, of Bloomfield, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter.
Mrs. Thomason was born Sept. 3, 1951 in Lilbourn. A homemaker, she attended the Dexter Church of Christ in Dexter.
On Aug. 4, 1970, she married
Francis A. Thomason in Piggott, Ark. He survives.
Other survivors include one son, Gary Thomason of St. Louis; one daughter, Frankie Thomason of Bloomfield; two sisters, Evelyn Boyt and Cathy Smith, both of Dexter; her mother, Wilda Horn Menley and stepfather, Arvel Menley, both of Dexter.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Dale Grissom officiating. Burial will be in the Triplett cemetery.
Shirley Slevin
PIEDMONT -- Shirley A. (Sanders) Slevin, 59, of Piedmont, died Saturday, June 19, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Slevin was born on Feb. 6, 1945 in Poplar Bluff. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Piedmont. She had worked as a bindery for a printing company and was a member of Graphic Communications International Union 6M505.
On Oct. 1, 1977, she married
Porter Slevin, and he survives.
Other survivors include six sons, Rex Wadlow of Patterson, Quintine Slevin and Paul Ries, both of Piedmont, Johnny Ries and Vernon Reed, both of Barnhart, George Page of Granite City, Ill.; five daughters, Paula Brame of Mill Spring, Peggy Slevin of Piedmont, Karleen Ries of Barnhart, Jamie Sutton of Millersville, Rachael Slevin of Ormand Beach, Fla.; one brother, Gordan Sanders of Piedmont; one sister, Betty Lou Hughes of Cedar Hill; her father, Winfred Sanders of Piedmont; and 17 grandchildren.
The visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ruegg Funeral Home in Piedmont. The memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Aubuchon officiating. Memorials can be made in lieu of flowers to the Cancer Society.
Lenora Smith
DEXTER -- Lenora Smith, 85, of Dexter, died Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Missouri Southern Healthcare Facility in Dexter.
Mrs. Smith was born on July 8, 1918 in Hornersville. She had lived in the Essex area most of her life until moving to Dexter 17 years ago. She was active in the Dexter Nutrition Center, Friendly Peoples Club and was a member of The Gospel Five for more than 10 years. She had worked at the Christian Bookstore and at McDonald's Dress shop before retiring. She was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Dexter.
On June 12, 1937, she married
Carl William Smith. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1982.
Survivors include one son, Don Smith of East Prairie; one daughter, Norma Beatty of Sullivan; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Lyndalh Gooch of Flint, Mich.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Biggs of Dexter officiating. Burial will be in the Taylor cemetery near Essex.
Dora Warren
BERNIE -- Dora Bates Warren, 85, of Bernie died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Warren was born June 26, 1918, at Bernie and had lived there more than 20 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Kay Stinson of New Haven and Karen Warren of Bernie; one son, Michael Joe Warren of Bernie; one sister, Nadine Tallent of Lompoc, Calif.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Susan Marner-Sides officiating. Burial will be in the Bernie cemetery.
Vernon L. Clark
NEELYVILLE -- Vernon Lee (Junior) Clark, 46, of Doniphan, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Clark was born July 29, 1954 in Modesto, Calif. He was of Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing and camping.
Survivors include four sisters, Carolyn Jackson of Stigler, Okla., Inez Frisk of Oxly, Susan Stephens and Loretta Fisher, both of Doniphan; two brothers, Gary Switzer of Doniphan, Jesse Switzer of Pittsburg, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. June 26 at Frisk Residence at Logan Creek in Oxly with the Rev. Fred Wiktorek and the Rev. Wade officiating. All friends and relatives are welcome to come. Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas McCain
NEELYVILLE -- Thomas J. McCain, 72, of St. Louis, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at his home.
Mr. McCain was born March 14, 1932 in Mississippi County, Ark. A former resident of Delmar and the Neelyville area, he was retired from Grocer Warehouse. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include two sisters, Hettie Mae Teague of Detroit and Ruby Nell Walton of St. Louis; and three brothers, Charles McCain, Fred N. McCain and James Edward McCain, all of Neelyville.
The visitation will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel in Neelyville. The funeral will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Gary McCain and the Rev. Ronald McCain officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery.
Thurman Wade
Thurman W. Wade, 80, of Poplar Bluff died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center after an illness of six weeks.
Mr. Wade was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Danville, Ill. and was a member of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Poplar Bluff. He grew up in the Lake Park area of Racine, Wis. and graduated from Park High School. He was a veteran of W.W.II, where he served as a pilot with the United States Air Force flying B-17 and B-25 bombers. He retired from the Air Force on Feb. 6, 1976 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also resided in Wiesbaden, Germany for 13 years, where he worked for the United States Civil Service Commission. He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling.
On Sept. 27, 1980, he married
Barbara Brown West at Webster Groves. She survives.
Other survivors include two children, Marna Wade of Fenton and Mark Wade of Phillipsburg, Mont.; a step-son, Douglas West of Dallas; four grandchildren, Tracy, Karen, Zachary and Matthew; three sisters, Geraldine Blaesing of Farmington Hill, Mich., Marjorie Hurst of Tacoma, Wash. and Carol Buhler of Las Vegas and two brothers, Hubert Wade and Carl Wade, both of Racine, Wis.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Poplar Bluff with Father Ned Bowden officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at 11 a.m. at the Missouri Veteran's cemetery in Bloomfield.

Diana McGowan
BERNIE -- Diana Lynn McGowan, 47, of Bernie, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Mrs. McGowan was born on Feb. 8, 1957 in Dexter.
A member of the First Assembly of God Church in Malden, she was a substitute Sunday School teacher and was devoted to her church. She worked as a clerk at Arvin-Metor at Dexter. She enjoyed walking in the park and spending time with family and friends.
On April 26, 1975, she married
Jan McGowan in Bernie. He survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Jeremy Don McGowan of Bernie and Joshua Michael McGowan of Hayti; one sister, Beckie Dawn Combs of Alton; her parents, Donald and Marlin Hillyard Durham, both of Bernie; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the First Assembly of God Church in Malden. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the church with the Rev. Dale Shoup officiating. Burial will be at Bernie cemetery. Memorials may be made to Arvin-Metor March of Dimes or the First Assembly of God Speed of Light Missions Program. Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie is in charge of arrangements.
