Murvel Sellars
ELLINGTON -- Murvel Russell Sellars, 64, of St. Ann died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003 at Redford, Mo. his second residence. He was born Sept. 26, 1939 at West Miami, Fla.
He was retired from Boeing Aircraft. He was married
to Nellwanda Sellars. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, Murvel Russell Sellars, Jr. of St. Louis; one daughter, Sandra Faye Gray of Fort Leonardwood; two brothers, Bobby Joe Sellars of Dallas, Texas and Jimmy Ray Sellars of St. Ann and four grandchildren.
McSpadden Funeral Home in Ellington is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held in Kentucky at a later date.
Warren Braswell
GREENVILLE -- Warren C. Braswell, 79, of Greenville died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at the John J. Pershing V.A. Medical Center in Poplar Bluff. He was born Oct. 29, 1923, at Pascola.
Mr. Braswell worked for Berg Vault Co. in St. Louis. He was an Army World War II veteran and was of the Protestant faith.
He married
Marie Eveland on Dec. 14, 1946. She survives.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Ruegg Funeral Home in Greenville. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Louie Robinson officiating. Burial will be at Greenville cemetery in Greenville.
Bertha McCarty
DONIPHAN -- Bertha May McCarty, 97, of Doniphan died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 at her residence. She was a lifetime resident of Doniphan.
Mrs. McCarty was born April 10, 1906 in Doniphan. She was a housewife. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening.
On Oct. 22, 1928, she married
Hershel McCarty in Naylor. He preceded her in death on July 7, 1971
Survivors include one daughter, Eva Falls of Doniphan; and one brother, Edison Little of Poplar Bluff.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Rev. Joe McDonald officiating. Burial will be at Naylor Masonic cemetery.
Francese Cotton
VAN BUREN -- Francese Cotton, 97, of Van Buren died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003 at the Riverways Manor Nursing Home in Van Buren. She was born Jan. 10, 1906 at Willow Springs.
Mrs. Cotton was a lifelong resident of Van Buren, where she and her husband George Stanley Cotton, owned the Carter County State Bank and ran a farm. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Queen Anne's Club.
Mrs. Cotton was active in many community activities including serving on the board of directors at the Carter County State Bank, and the Current River Regional Library in Van Buren and Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff. She enjoyed playing Bridge, working crossword puzzles and just driving around the community.
She was united in marriage to George Stanley Cotton. He preceded her in death Aug. 10, 1962.
Survivors include one niece, Francese Barbee; four nephews, Graydon Ballard, George Ballard, John Moore and Terry Moore.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Hank Foster officiating.
Burial will be at the Masonic cemetery in Van Buren. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the United Methodist Church or the Current River Regional Library.
Oren Stephens
PUXICO -- Oren Stephens, 87, of Puxico died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Mr. Stephens was born Feb. 14, 1916, in McGee. He was a member of the Brown General Baptist Church in Puxico and retired from the Missouri Department of Conservation and farming in 1985.
On April 2, 1938, he married
Thelma Stephens in Bloomfield. She preceded him in death Dec. 3, 2002.
Survivors include two sons, Keith Stephens of Jackson and Gary Stephens of St. Peters; one daughter, Jean Placher of Puxico; one sister, Edna Cato of McGee; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Golda Koch; one grandson, Keith Alan; three half-brothers; and three half-sisters.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today at Morgan-Sifford Funeral Home in Puxico. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Brown General Baptist Church with the Rev. John Buttry officiating. Burial will be in the Brown General Baptist cemetery in Puxico.
Memorials may be made to the Brown General Baptist cemetery.
Stanley Fears
ELLINGTON -- Stanley Fears, 61, of Ellington died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.
Arrangements are pending with McSpadden Funeral Home in Ellington.
Oscar J. Brady
BLOOMFIELD -- Oscar J. "Shorty" Brady, 76, of Bloomfield died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at Beverly Health and Rehab Center in Bloomfield.
Mr. Brady was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Walnut Ridge, Ark. He had lived in Bloomfield since 1946, and was a retired concrete construction employee of Jarrell's Concrete Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He married
Virginia Martin on March 26, 1948; she survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Sandra Pilcher of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Martin Brady of Zanesville, Ohio, a brother, Utah Brady of Houston, Texas; and a sister, Winnona McGuire of Gulfport, Miss.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday at the Watkins & Sons Chapel with Mike Watkins officiating. Military Rites will be conduced at the Missouri Veterans cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday preceding burial, with the Southeast Missouri Honor Guard of Poplar Bluff officiating.
Hazel Johnson
Hazel Bendel Johnson, 87, of West Plains, a former resident of Poplar Bluff, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at the West Vue Nursing Center in West Plains.
Mrs. Johnson was born April 19, 1916, in Perry County. She was a retired housemother for the Swanson Correctional Center for Boys in Monroe, La., and was a member of the Good Hope Methodist Church in Butler County.
On March 25, 1943, she married
Cecil Johnson in Poplar Bluff. He preceded her in death Feb. 10, 1991.
Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Bendel Durkee of Chester, Ill., and Francis "Jerry" Bendel Cox of Herrin, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Vernon Kneir officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Bluff City cemetery.

Rev. William Davis
GRANITE CITY, Ill. -- The Rev. William Edwin Davis, 66, of Granite City, Ill., formerly of Poplar Bluff, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at the Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.
The Rev. Mr. Davis was born Nov. 3, 1937, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. From 1971 to 1986, he was the priest of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Poplar Bluff. Since 1986, he has served as priest of the St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in Granite City. He was a member of the Ministerial Association of Granite City.
On May 9, 1964, he married
Donna S. Rehrig in Bethlehem, Pa. She survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Deborah Baucom of Poplar Bluff, Rebekah Brandis of Collinsville, Ill., and Rachael Gaudreault of Granite City; two sons, Paul Davis of Granite City and Matthew Davis of Poplar Bluff; one sister, Marion Sheppherd of Sinking Spring, Pa.; one brother, Allan Davis of Shavertown, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in Granite City. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with Bishop Peter Beckwith officiating. Irwin Funeral Chapel in Granite City is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church.
Ralph Hanna
Ralph Hannah, 56, of Ellsinore, a respected Poplar Bluff businessman, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at his residence.
