Taylor Barnett
DEXTER -- Taylor Barnett, the infant son of Shaun and Taletia Barnett of Sikeston, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis shortly after birth.
Survivors include his parents; one sister, Taydrianna Barnett of Sikeston; one brother, Malkia Barnett of Sikeston; his grandparents, Norman and Portia Cole and Joe and Lessie Barnett, all of Sikeston; and her great-grandparents, Evelenda Herrion and Elsie Cole, both of Essex and Joe and Almeter Marshall of Sikeston.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Macedonia cemetery in Malden with the Rev. James Tuck officiating. Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter is in charge of arrangements.
Marvin Bowles
PIEDMONT -- Marvin E. Bowles, 78, of Piedmont died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Clark's Mountain Nursing Center in Piedmont.
Mr. Bowles was born April 17, 1925, in Piedmont. He was a member of the Mill Spring Christian Church and was a graduate of Piedmont High School. He was a member and past Master of the Wayne County Masonic Lodge 526 AF and AM for 50 years and served as coroner of Wayne County for 36 years. He also served as a Wayne County Commissioner for two terms, was past president of the Piedmont School Board and the Piedmont Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He retired after 46 years as a funeral director and owner of Gish-Bowles & Coder Funeral Homes, Inc., in Piedmont, Greenville and Williamsville.
On Jan. 11, 1942, he married
Marjorie Jane Blackwell. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, James E. Bowles of Piedmont; one brother, Dr. Grover C. Bowles Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Ruegg Funeral Home in Piedmont. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home chapel with Dr. Frank Myers officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic cemetery in Piedmont.
Robbie Taylor
DEXTER -- Robbie Taylor, 92, of Essex died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Cypress Point Healthcare Facility in Dexter.
Mrs. Taylor was born April 26, 1911, in Giltedge, Tenn. She had been a resident of Essex since 1928 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Essex. She had worked as a cook at the Essex and Richland schools.
On Nov. 11, 1946, she married
Ira C. Taylor in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death March 14, 1992.
Survivors include one daughter, Vera Gilbert of Essex; one brother, Leotis Odom of Essex; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Saturday at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dennis Ward officiating. Burial will be in the Essex cemetery.
Mary Allen
MALDEN -- Mary Ann "Tootsie" Allen, 69, of Clarkton died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Allen was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Catron. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarkton where she served as Director of the WMU. She retired in 1998 as a CNA at Ridgeview Nursing Center.
On Nov. 12, 1949, she married
William Hobert Goodman. He preceded her in death June 30, 1975. On Feb. 14, 1987, she married
Robert "Bob" Allen in Clarkton. He preceded her in death Aug. 17, 2001.
Survivors include three daughters, Renae Houston of Steele, Cindy McCoin of Clarkton and Leticia Ladymon of Union; two sons, Mike Goodman of Columbus, Ga., and Ted Pratt of Kokomo, Ind.; five sisters, Glowdine Miller of Piedmont, Louise Lee of Bloomington, Calif., Betty Melton of St. Louis, Della Mae Dunivan of Gideon and Dorothy Mantle of Hazelwood; three brothers, Charlie Pratt of Victorville, Calif., Ed Pratt of Cushing, Okla., and Richard Pratt of Kokomo; 11 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today at Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Clarkton with the Rev. Richard Blagg officiating. Burial will be in the Stanfield cemetery in Clarkton.
Bill Arnold
CORNING, Ark. -- Bill Arnold, 77, of Peach Orchard, Ark., died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Arnold was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Knobel, Ark. He was a retired farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.
On May 18, 1953, he married
Eula May Lovelady. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Donnie Arnold and Eugene Arnold, both of Knobel and Michael Arnold of Corning, Ark.; four daughters, Mona Keeling and Frances Bowen, both of Peach Orchard, Sandra Williams of Corning and Tammy Arnold of Knobel; two brothers, Ronnie Arnold of Richwood and Jimmy Arnold of California; four sisters, Imogene Sawyers of Kennett, Barbara Arnold of Poplar Bluff, Alice Lowoski of Washington and June Arnold of Phoenix; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ermert Funeral Home in Corning. A graveside funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in Hosea cemetery in Knobel with the Rev. Gary Holcomb officiating.
Alfred Manner
DONIPHAN -- Alfred Manner, 88, of Doniphan died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Three Rivers Healthcare-North Campus in Poplar Bluff.
Mr. Manner was born Feb. 17, 1915. He had worked as a college professor and for the Civil Service. He was also a Merchant Marine during World War II.
He was married
to Nellie Manner who preceded him in death in 2001.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews; and several children and grandchildren by his late wife.
Visitation will begin at noon Friday at Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. A graveside funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in Handy cemetery.
Leonard Goodwin Jr.
Leonard John "Jay" Goodwin Jr., 80, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Three Rivers Healthcare-North Campus after a brief illness.
Mr. Goodwin, the son of the late Leonard J. Goodwin Sr. and Nell Irene (Casebolt) Goodwin, was born July 1, 1923, in Poplar Bluff. He was a retired salesman and a member of the First Baptist Church. He enjoyed reading, writing stories, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
On May 6, 1951, he married
Norma Lee Combs in Poplar Bluff. She survives.
Survivors include one son, Leonard John Goodwin III and wife Audrey of Hazelwood; one daughter, Lynn Burpo of Poplar Bluff; five grandchildren, Michelle Willeford, Jennifer Gurley and Daniel Burpo, all of Poplar Bluff and Dalton and Tayler Goodwin, both of Hazelwood; and two great-grandchildren, Destiny and Faith Willeford, both of Poplar Bluff.
Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. today at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel with Dr. William Vail officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery.
Sharon Stewart
Sharon Sue Stewart, 58, of Poplar Bluff died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Three Rivers Healthcare-North Campus.
Arrangements are pending with Cotrell Funeral Service.
Thomas Swindle
Thomas W. 'Tom' Swindle, 81, of Poplar Bluff died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at Three Rivers Healthcare North Campus in Poplar Bluff.
Mr. Swindle was born Nov. 27, 1921 in Senath. A retired mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service, he had also worked for the Poplar Bluff Police Department, the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center and carried a deputy sheriff's commission. He was a member of the New Life Christian Church United in Poplar Bluff. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II; was instrumental in the start of the HASP Program; and volunteered for the Civil Defense Service. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.
On Aug. 1, 1969, he married
Margaret Louella Ryskey and she survives.
Other survivors include four sons, Gerald Swindle of Hornlake, Miss., Harold Swindle of St. Louis, Tommy L. Swindle and Jeffrey Swindle, both of Poplar Bluff; one daughter, Jennifer Kopp of Poplar Bluff; five step-children, Robert Palmer of Crawfordbill, Fla., Judith Robertson of Rosebud, Ark., Gary Palmer and Harvey Hook, both of Portland, Org., Ronnie Palmer of Corpus Christi, Tex.; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at New Life Christian Church United on Barron Road in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with Rev. Morris Ball officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at 1 p.m. at the Veteran's cemetery in Bloomfield. Cotrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Hester E. Carter
DEXTER -- Hester E. Carter, 81, of Dexter died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Missouri Southern Healthcare Facility in Dexter.
Mrs. Carter was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Bernie and lived for many years in Dexter. When her health permitted, she was active in the Dexter Nutrition Center, the Hospital Auxiliary and the American Legion. She married
James L. Carter Nov. 27, 1941 and he preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1977.
Survivors include one son, Thomas O'Dell Morrish of Grand Blanc, Mich.; four brothers, Darryl Asher, Gary Asher and Terry Asher, all of Fredericktown, and Larry Asher of St. Louis and two sisters, Barbara Myers of Fredericktown and Sandra Copeland of Park Hills.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. The Rev. Dennis Ward will officiate. Burial will be at Hagy cemetery in Dexter at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003.
Claude Ponder
COLUMBIA -- Claude L. "Duke" Ponder, 80, of Columbia died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.
Mr. Ponder was born April 4, 1923, in Doniphan. He was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a degree in biology. He was a conservation agent and field service biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation for 34 years until his retirement in 1988. He also taught grade school in Broseley. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England.
In Columbia, Mr. Ponder served as a volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Restore program and built physical therapy devices which resulted in contributions to Restore. He also drove the volunteer van at University Hospital and Clinics and volunteered for years at the Food Pantry. He was an active member of the Community United Methodist Church in Columbia where he and his wife founded "The Ponderers" Sunday school class.
On Nov. 10, 1945, he married
Jean Phillabaum at Fort Dix, N.J. She survives.
Other survivors include four daughters, Patsy Ponder Dalton of Four Seasons, Diana Life and Virginia Ponder, both of Columbia; and the Rev. Jodi Ponder Williams of Princeton; three sisters, Martha Adams of Doniphan, Peggy Raddle of Cape Girardeau and Sarah Condray of St. Louis; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Community United Methodist Church in Columbia with the Rev. Gary DeWitt officiating. A private burial will be held in the Memorial Park cemetery.
