J.R. "Bob" Basnett
CARTERVILLE, Mo. - J.R. "Bob" Basnett, 91, Carterville, died at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin.
Mr. Basnett was born Dec. 27, 1911, in Carterville. He was employed for 38 years with the former Atlas Powder Co., now ICI Explosives, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Carterville Christian Church and was ordained as a Christian minister and formerly pastored the Christian Church in Lawton, Kan. He was a 50-year member and Past Master of the Carterville Lodge 401 that later merged with the Webb City Lodge 512 AF&AM.; He also was a member of the Webb chapter 204 Order of Eastern Star in Webb City.
He married
Crystal Hamilton on Jan. 27, 1935, in Vinita, Okla. She preceded him in death on July 14, 1975.
Survivors include a daughter, Robyn Sunderland, Carthage.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hedge-Lewis Chapel in Webb City with Lee Williams, minister, officiating.
Visitation is from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Carterville Christian Church.
Walter Bridges
MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - Walter Ray Bridges, 75, Midwest City, Okla., died June 19, 2003, at Midwest City Regional Hospital.
Mr. Bridges was born on April 11, 1928, in Wentworth, Mo. to Walter Robert and Beulah Higgins Bridges. He lived in Midwest City area for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and was a mason.
Survivors include his wife, Carol, of the home; four sons, Ben Bridges, Diamond; Henry Bridges, Reeds, Ernest Bridges, Joplin and Perry Bridges, Midwest City; a daughter, Marilyn Bridges Miller, Houston, Texas; two step-daughters, Tina Anderson and Donna Anderson, both of Muskogee, Okla.; a sister, Vera Heckmaster, Diamond; a brother, Charley Bridges, Diamond; five grandchildren 10, stepgrandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Naydeen.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Clark Funeral Home in Neosho.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at Diamond (Mo.) cemetery.
Wilma L. Green
MADERA, Calif. - Wilma L. Green, 91, Madera, Calif., formerly of Carthage, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Madera Community Hospital.
Mrs. Green was born in Polk County, Mo., to James Edward and Gertrude Clark Lyman. She grew up at Carthage, and married
Cecil Williams. They made their home in California. He died in 1953.
In 1960, she married
Milo Green. He died in 1960. She retired after 23 years as a file clerk for FMC Corporation at San Jose, Calif. She moved to Madera in 2002, to make her home with her son.
Survivors include a son, Steven Green, Madera, Calif.; a brother, Eugene Lyman, Carthage; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Henry.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Lallarpe cemetery, LaHarpe, Kan., under the direction of Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel, Iola, Kan.
Cletta May Hansen
Funeral services for Cletta May Hansen, 85, Carthage, who died June 13, 2003, were held June 16 at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bob Teegarden officiated.
Cindy Huntley accompanied Katherine Snyder who sang "Whispering Hope" and "Where We'll Never Grow Old."
Pallbearers were Bob McDaniel, Blondie Butler, Dick Sunderland, Levi Snyder, Charles Potter, Gene Huff.
Burial was at Fasken cemetery, Carthage.
Contributions are suggested to Center Point Christian Church.
Charlton L. Anderson
JASPER, Mo. - Charlton L. Anderson, 92, Jasper, died at 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Anderson was born Oct. 19, 1910, in Neosho, Mo., to Albert Linley and Mamie J. Schader Anderson. He was a farmer and member of the First Baptist Church, Jasper, where has served as a deacon since 1947.
He married
Ruby Alice Conrod on Feb. 6, 1932, in Neosho. She survives.
Additional survivors include a son, David Anderson, Riverview, Fla., a daughter, Catherine Leaming, Jasper; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper. Burial will be in Mitchell cemetery, east of Jasper.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to First Baptist Church building fund of Community Hospice of America.
James R. Hatfield Sr.
JASPER, Mo. - James R. Hatfield Sr., 56, died at 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at his home following a six-month illness.
Mr. Hatfield was born May 2, 1947, in Carthage to Raleigh Hatfield and Odell Coady Hatfield. He was a cooler attendant at Schreiber Cheese.
He married
Joyce "Jody" Asbell on June 4, 1966, in Joplin. She survives.
Additional survivors include his mother, Odell Hatfield, Carthage; two sons, James Hatfield Jr. and wife, Gina, Jasper; Clayton Hatfield, Jasper; a daughter, Tracy Vance and husband, David, Jasper; a sister, Judy Kim, Carthage; three grandchildren, Alanea Brock, Jesse Vance and Mason Hatfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Waters cemetery, Jasper.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Laurene M. Smith
HIGGINSVILLE, Mo. - Laurene M. Smith, 76, Higginsville, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at the Medical Center in Independence, Mo.
Mrs. Smith was born on Nov. 4, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Frank Smith and Ruby Snyder Smith. She was a homemaker and member of the Church of Christ.
On June 15, 1944, she married
Junior Paul Smith in Walnut Ridge Ark. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1986.
Survivors include two daughters, Bette Brown, Buckner, Mo., and Debbie Schaller, Carthage; two sons, Robert P. Smith, Corder, Mo., and Brent Smith, Higginsville, Mo.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, June 21 at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg. Burial was in Warrensburg Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Junior Buster
E. Junior Buster, 72, Carthage ,went to be with the Lord at 12:25 a.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2003, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin.
Mr. Buster was born April 25, 1931, in Jasper County, Mo., to Charles E. and Mary L. Kahl Buster. He was a mechanic for Flex-o-lators and Big Smith, retiring in February 1992. He also raised cattle. He was a long time member of the First Christian Church and the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday School Class, Carthage.
He was united in marriage to Martha Baker on Jan. 13, 1952, in Carthage. She survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Joe Buster, Carthage and Mike Buster, Columbia, Md.; a daughter, Marti Burkhart, Neosho; two sisters, Betty Alexander, Carthage, and June Ruland, Tulia, Texas; five grandchildren, Adam Buster, Sarah Buster, Kristi Goldman, Tana Burkhart and Alaina Burkhart.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at First Christian Church, Carthage. Burial will be in Fasken cemetery.
Visitation is from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper.
Memorial contributions will be at the Cardinal Class Hospital Fund at First Christian Church, or Center Point Christian Church building fund.
James R. Hatfield Sr.
JASPER, Mo. - James R. Hatfield Sr., 56, Jasper died on Tuesday June 24, 2003, at his home.
Services are pending at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage.
E. Junior Buster
Services for Junior Buster, who died Sunday, June 22, 2003, were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the First Christian Church, Carthage. Minister Bob Lyttle and Minister Bob Teegarden officiated. Mary Ann Gremling was the pianist. Sarah Buster, Junior's granddaughter, sang "Shine Jesus Shine." The congregation sang "One Day at a Time," and "How Great Thou Art."
Pallbearers were Joe Buster,Mike Buster, Roger Burkhart, Adam buster, Ron Baker, Phil Wilson, Glenn Cunningham, Kevin Smith, Elgan Snyder, Junior Snyder, Lloyd Kahl, Bill Kahl, Lloyd Thorn and Joe Weng.
Burial was held at Fasken cemetery, located east of Carthage.
Arrangements were under the direction of Weng Funeral Home.
Charlton Anderson
Services for Charlton Anderson, who died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, were held at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 26 at Weng Funeral Chapel in Jasper. Rev. Kenneth Carney officiated. Lois Dodson was the organist. Rayetta Bates, vocalist, sang "How Great Thou Art," "In the Garden," and "I'll Fly Away."
Burial was held in Mitchell cemetery, located east of Jasper.
George Case
Services for George E. Case, who died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, were held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper. Minister Walter Wicklund officiated. Winona Knight was the organist. Case's grandchildren, nieces and nephews sang "Precious memories," "How Great Thou Art," and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Pallbearers were Christopher Frantz, Allen Case, Chad Case, Daniel Osborne, Joshua Thomas, Jeremy Thomas, Jim Gresham, John Larson, Bill Knight, Gale Knight, Cy Knight and Bill Howell. Military rites were given by the Missouri Honors Program.
Burial was held in Park cemetery, Carthage.
James R. Hatfield Sr.
Services for James R. Hatfield Sr, 56, Jasper, who died on Tuesday, June 24, 2003, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 27 at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel in Carthage.
Rev. Bob Jones officiated, with song selections including "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, "Go Rest High on that Mountain," by Vince Gill, and "Amazing Grace," on the bagpipes.
Pallbearers included James Hatfield Jr., Clayton Smith Hatfield, David Vance, Larry Graham, Lonnie Knight, O.T. Brewer and Tracy Vance.
Burial was at Water's cemetery in Jasper. Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
