MICHAEL B. CLAXTON

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Michael Brent Claxton, 52, Vero Beach, Fla., died on May 27, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Claxton was born Jan. 10, 1951, to Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank Claxton. His father preceded him in death.

Surviving is his wife, Bette, his mother, brother, five children and six grandchildren.

Burial was held May 31 at Hillcrest Memorial cemetery in Fort Pierce, Fla.

Regina May Hensley

Services for Regina May Hensley, 86, Carthage, who died June 2, 2003, were held Wednesday at Fairview Christian Church, Carthage. The Rev. David Lang and Boyce Mouton officiated.

Musical selections were "In the Garden," "How Great Thou Art," "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," "A Song in My Heart" and "I'll Fly Away." All songs were recorded renditions sung by Willard Hill.

Burial was in Park cemetery, Carthage, under the direction of Knell Mortuary.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Community Hospice of America.

Lonnie Shafer

LAMAR, Mo. - Lonnie Shafer, 56, Lamar, died at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2003, in Lamar.

Mr. Shafer was born March 31, 1947, in Temple, Texas, to Alfred Caleb and Gertrude Roden. He had lived in Lamar since 2002, moving from Houston, Texas. He owned Lonnie's House of Steaks, Lamar. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Liberal United Methodist Church.

He married Rita Walters Shafer, on Aug. 25, 1968, in Houston, Texas.

Survivors include two sons, Adam Clint Shafer, Houston, Texas, and Miles Ranson Lani, Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Brandi Michele Lani, Houston, Texas and Stephani Alan Lani, Reno, Nev.; a brother, Tommy Shafer, Rogers, Texas; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Liberal United Methodist Church.

Rudy Maxson

Harvey Victor "Rudy" Maxson, 86, Carthage, died at 6:02 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.

Mr. Maxson was born Oct. 10, 1916, in Wildhorse, Colo., to Harris H. Maxson and Letha Hendricks. He lived in Carthage since 1986, moving from Elwood, Kan. He was a policeman in the Doniphan County area. He was acting sheriff and worked as under sheriff for more than 45 years. He was Chief of Police in Elwood, Kan. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Carthage, Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, both in Carthage and Wathena, Kan.

He married Evalyn J. Livingston on April 9, 1938, in Oskaloosa, Kan. She survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Garnet Stout and Louetta Floyd, both of Carthage; two brothers, Vernon Maxson, St. Joseph, Mo., and Wayne Maxson, Denver, Colo.; a sister, Ioma Pape, Elwood, Kan.; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Wayne Maxson, five brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 5 at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. Services will follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Keith Miles officiating.

A second service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 6 at Harman-Rhode Mortuary in Wathena, Kan. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Burial will be in Belmont cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Morris Floyd, Larry Stout, Stephen Floyd, Charles Royer, Gabe Royer and Dave Stewart.

Memorial contributions are suggested to First Baptist Church, Carthage.

Sally Morrow

Sally Morrow, 79, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at 9:01 p.m. at her home in Carthage, Mo., following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Morrow was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Joplin to James Baxter Porter and Mary Bingham Porter. Both of her parents preceded her in death.

She graduated from Joplin High School in 1940 and attended Duke University and later the University of Missouri.

She married Joseph M. Morrow on Dec. 19, 1944, in Riverside, Calif. He survives.

Her son, Peter Morrow and his wife, Melanie, Scottsdale, Ariz.; her brother, James Porter, and his wife, Kay, Springfield, Mo.; two brothers-in-laws, Sam Morrow and his wife, Jean, Tom Morrow and his wife, Norma, all of Carthage, and two grandchildren, Amy and Charlie survive her.

She was a member of the St. Ann's Catholic Church, the Pi Phi Sorority, the PEO, the Montre Investment Club and a member of the Duplicate Bridge Club (a very distinguished honor among bridge players.) She learned to play the violin from her mother and made her concert debut at the age of 2. She won numerous awards in musical competitions. She was an active golfer and a lifelong member of the Twin Hills Country Club, Joplin. She was a regular competitor in duplicate bridge tournaments.

A visitation will be held Friday, June 6, 2003, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Knell Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. Interment will be in the Park cemetery, Carthage.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of the mortuary. Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Samuel Lee Porter

HEMET, Calif. - Samuel Lee Porter Sr., 80, Hemet, Calif., died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Decedent's Residence in Hemet.

Mr. Porter was born Dec. 21, 1922, in Seneca, Mo., to Fred M. Porter and Julia V. Craig Porter. He was a union house mover and was a member for 54 years of housemovers local 507, Long Beach, Calif. He retired in 1976 in Paramount, Calif.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 101st Airborne Division, "Screaming Eagles" 506th Company H. He parachuted into Normandy on D Day, at midnight on June 6, 1944. He was also a machine gunner. He was wounded twice in action on June 8, 1944,and received a Purple Heart and a bronze battle star. Lt. Christensen was his squad leader. He was medically discharged in October 1945 from Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and continued to communicate with his Screaming Eagles brothers.

He married Jess Ann Brock in 1946 in Carthage, Mo. They moved to Paramount, Calif. in 1960 and then to Hemet in 1986. His wife preceded him in death on March 25, 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Sam L. Porter Jr., Carthage and Fred Porter Sr., Hemet, Calif.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Hazel Marie Phillips.

Services will be at 3 p.m. on Monday at Miller-Jones Mortuary, Hemet, Calif. Burial will be in Riverside National cemetery, Riverside, Calif.

Dewey W. Dalton

Dewey Wilburn Dalton, 79, Carthage, died at 12:09 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2003, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Mr. Dalton was born July 1, 1923, in Valley Springs, Ark., to Jefferson Dewey Dalton and Ollie Belle Fullerton Dalton. He was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School, Class of 1941, attended Joplin Junior College for two years and Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps.

Mr. Dalton was a flight instructor at the Carthage Municipal Airport. He then joined Lawn Boy, Inc., serving as a production engineer and corporate pilot. He was an engineer for McCullough Chain Saws, Shreveport, La., A.B. Chance, Centralia, Mo.; Fairchild Press, Joplin and O'Sullivan Industries Inc., Lamar, retiring in 2001.

He married Kathryn Dininger on June 17, 1947, in Harrison, Ark. She survives.

Mr. Dalton and his wife, Kathryn, resided in Lamar, Mo., for 46 years moving to Carthage in 2002.

Other survivors include one daughter, Kathy Dalton Selvey and husband, Kirk, Carthage; two sons, Steve Dalton and wife, Sherry, East Peoria, Ill. and Greg Dalton, Carthage; seven grandchildren, Crystal Dalton, Steven G. Dalton, Daniel Warner, Jennifer Benefield, Kara Selvey, Kyle Selvey and Kreg Selvey.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Willard Dalton.

A visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 11 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 in the First Baptist Church, Lamar. The Rev. Robert Hodson will officiate.

Burial was in Park cemetery, Carthage. Pallbearers were Adam Comer, Don Hosack, Kreg Selvey, Kyle Selvey, Will Pattison, Ken Ratchford and Rick Williams.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Greg Dalton Campus, Missouri Baptist Children's Home, Lamar.

Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Margaret B. Kennedy

SARCOXIE, Mo. - Margaret B. Kennedy, 89, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at St. Luke's Nursing Center, Carthage, after an illness.

Mrs. Kennedy was born Nov. 29, 1913, at Geneva, Wis. He was homemaker.

She married J. Gordon Kennedy. He survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Richard Kennedy, Sacramento, Calif. and James "Jim" Kennedy, Sarcoxie; five grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date under the direction of Housh Funeral Home, Sarcoxie.

Ginger Brown

Ginger G. Brown, 73, Carthage, died at 7:55 a.m. Sunday, June 8, 2003, at McCune-Brooks Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Ulmer Funeral Home.

Sally Morrow

Services for Sally Morrow, 71, Carthage, who died June 3, 2003, were held Saturday, June 7 at Knell Mortuary. The Rev. Tuan Camelus officiated.

Burial was in Park cemetery, Carthage.

Pallbearers were Neel Baucom, Mathew Carter, Van Bennett, Pat Phelps, Robert Freitas and Steve Price.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Florese Marie Parks

Services for Florese Marie Parks, 81, Carthage, who died June 2, 2003, were held Saturday, June 7 at Knell Mortuary. The Rev. Chester N. Clark officiated.

Musical selections were "I Wanna Know," "Missing You," "Amazing Grace" and "End of the Road."

Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery, Carthage.

Pallbearers were Harley Burns, Claude Burns, Chestene Burns, Norman Jackson Jr., Tony Jackson, Michael Jackson, Marcus Burns and Keith Burns.

Lauren "Lonnie" Erwin

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - Lauren A. "Lonnie" Erwin of Lee's Summit, passed away June 8, 2003.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons, Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan., with entombment in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call upon the family from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 6700 Antioch, Shawnee, Mission, KS 66204.

Lonnie was born Oct. 24, 1943, to Galen and Annabel Erwin in Webb City, Mo. Lonnie was a respiratory therapist for over 32 years before his retirement.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Robertson and her husband, Kent, Lee's Summit, Mo.; a brother, Dennis Erwin and his wife, Katsy, Carthage; sister, Lee Ann Branch and her husband, Jesse, Arkadelphia, Ark.; Sally Schmidt, Branson; grandson, Steve Robertson, several nieces, great-nieces and nephews.

Neva C. Jarmin

Neva C. Jarmin, 92, Carthage, died at 10:15 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2003, at St. Luke's Nursing Center, Carthage.

Mrs. Jarmin was born Sept. 9, 1910, at Dunnegan, Mo., to Fred Engleman and Cora Busch. She was an area resident for over 40 years. She was a 1941 graduate of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield and taught in rural schools in Polk County before she began teaching at Carthage Junior High School in 1949. She retired in 1976. She held membership and offices in the Missouri State Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, Alpha Delta Kappa, Presbyterian Women's Circle V, Extension Club and Federated Garden Club.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

She married Harry T. Jarmin, on June 27, 1942, in Humansville, Mo. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1943.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Lee Jurgiel, Worcester, Mass.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. at Akard cemetery, Fairplay, Mass.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. prior to the service.
