CARLA J. GRUVER

Carla Jean Gruver, 18, Harrisonville, Mo., died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997.

Miss Gruver was born Aug. 15, 1979, in Harrisonville, Mo.

Her survivors include her parents, Donald Carl Gruver and Susan Jean Gruver of Harrisonville; two brothers, Donnie Karl Gruver and Robert Henry Gruver, and two sisters, Deborah Anne Gruver and Karen Louise Gruver, all of the home; her grandmothers, Elsie Lois Smith, Independence, and Elizabeth Gruver, Lawrence, Kan.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Burial was in Peculiar (Mo.) cemetery.

OLETHA G. "GWEN" HARGROVE

Oletha G. "Gwen" Hargrove, 97, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center. Mrs. Hargrove was born Feb. 15, 1900, in Ludlow, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence. Her husband, Lester L. Hargrove, died in 1988.

Her survivors include a daughter, Susan Walter, Independence; a grandson, Paul Walter; and two great-granddaughters, Kaitlin Walter and Lindsey Walter.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Entombment will beat Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army, 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo. 64111.

VIRGINIA L. MAHR

Virginia L. Mahr, 74, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Mahr was born July 18, 1923, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She loved big band music and ballroom dancing, and had taught at the Pla-Mor in the early 1940s. She was a member of the Unity Village church. Her husband, Richard Eugene Mahr, died in 1972.

Her survivors include a daughter, Debra Pratt, Blue Springs; a son, Ronald Mahr, Kansas City, Kan.; three nieces, Sandra Childers, Shirley Morgan and Carol Sue Burtwell; two nephews, Dean McMillian and Dennis McMillian; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.

DORIS R. MARTIN

Doris Rosemary Martin, 65, Chillicothe, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at Hedrick Medical Center, Chillicothe.

Mrs. Martin was born March 8, 1932, in Union City, Tenn., and lived in Warrensburg, Mo., before moving to Chillicothe in 1995. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of the Nazarene in Chillicothe. Her husband, Daniel Austin Martin, died April 5, 1997.

Her survivors include four sons, James Stanfield, Texas, Harold Martin, Independence, Roy Martin, Fulton, Mo., and Danny Martin, Blue Springs; two daughters, Judy Greer, Chillicothe, and Kathy Abbott, Mountain View, Mo.; two sisters, Virginia James, Nebraska, and Shirley Thome, St. Louis; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe. Burial will be in Leavenworth (Kan.) National cemetery. There is no scheduled family visitation. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

ANNABELLE RICHARDS

Annabelle Richards, 81, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at Truman Medical Center East.

Mrs. Richards was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Independence.

Her survivors include a son, Donald E. Thompson, and a daughter, Judy Geer Young, both of Independence; a brother, Everett Ware, Warsaw, Mo.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of Park Lawn Funeral Home.

STEPHEN A. SMOTHERS

Stephen A. Smothers, 85, Independence, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at the Independence Manor Care Center.

Mr. Smothers was born in Peking, Ill., and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was an electrician, retiring from Evans Electric, and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 124. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and a life member of the Jackson County Sheriff`s association and the National Rifle Association. His daughter, Lonia Epperson, died in 1993.

His survivors include his wife, Donia Smothers of the home; two sons, Lee Smothers, Independence, and Richard Smothers, Edwards, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

VIOLET B. TURNER

Violet Berneice Sloan Turner, 83, Kansas City, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998.

Mrs. Turner was a native of Kirksville, Mo. She retired from the Kansas City Star, and enjoyed bowling and quilting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Turner.

Her survivors include two sons, Kenneth Turner and Ronald Turner; seven grandchildren, Julie Hengel, Curtis Turner, Tracy Johnson, Vickie Cribari, Scott Landes, Beth Napolitano and Greg Turner; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the McGilley Antioch Chapel, Gladstone, Mo. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in New Hope cemetery, Liberty, Mo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.

WALTER S. WHITAKER

Walter S. Whitaker, 77, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at the Veterans Hospital in Kansas City.

Mr. Whitaker was born April 22, 1920, in Iberia, Mo., and moved to Blue Springs in 1980. He was a welder for Howard Construction Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1980. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Iberia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6167. He attended the Assembly of God Church in Iberia.

His survivors include his wife of 57 years, Veta Whitaker of the home; a daughter, Alta Hoff, Blue Springs; a sister, Anna Allen, Cuba, Mo.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be noon Wednesday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the chapel.

ROBERT H. BATYE

Robert Harold Batye, 65, Independence, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, in Independence.

Mr. Batye was born in Carrollton, Mo., and had lived in Atlanta, Ga., before moving to Independence. He was a trainer of Appaloosa show horses and enjoyed Irish history. He was an Air Force veteran, having served as a first lieutenant in Korea.

His survivors include two sons, Kevin Sterling Batye and Cameron Sean Batye, both of Atlanta; four sisters, Colleen Miller, Independence, and Anna Lee Wood, Shari Riley and Maxine Kenoyer, all of Des Moines; two brothers, John Batye and Jim Batye, both of DesMoines; and five grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date. The family suggests contributions in his memory to the Kansas City Hospice or to Cancer Action of Independence. Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Memorial Chapel Inc.

TYLER J. KEELE-CARLIER

Tyler James Keele-Carlier, 4-month-old son of Travis Carlier of Independence and Dawn Keele of Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997.

Tyler was born Aug. 7, 1997, in Kansas City. He was a Methodist by faith.

His survivors also include a half sister, Bailey Keele, Blue Springs; paternal grandparents, Laura Carlier and Richard Winn of Independence, and James Carlier, Oceanside, Calif.; maternal grandparents, Randy and Doreen Keele, Blue Springs; paternal great-grandparents, George and Mary Lee, Provencil, La., and Verona Carlier, Hemet, Calif.; maternal great-grandparents, Earl and Fern Keele, and Mary Whitcomb, all of Lee`s Summit, and Russ and Shirley Whitcomb, Cincinatti; and several aunts and uncles.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Blue Springs cemetery. Friendsmay call from noon to 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.

GALE W. JEFFRIES

Gale Winston Jeffries, 77, Independence, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Jeffries was born in Zebra, Mo., March 2, 1920, and lived in this area for the past 72 years. He worked for Universal Construction Co. for 41 years as a labor superintendent retiring in 1986. He was a member of Labor Union Local 264 and an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 5th Armored Division.

His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jean Jeffries of the home; one son, Tom Jeffries, Blue Springs; three daughters, Debi Beam and Laura Jeffries, both of Independence, and Penny Reser, Buckner; one sister, Mildred Parker, Webb City, Mo.; six brothers, Nile Jeffries, Fearl Jeffries, Gene Jeffries and Nelson Jeffries, all of Independence, OrvilleJeffries, Buckner, and Cecil Jeffries, Sibley; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m Tuesday at the New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in Six Mile cemetery, Sibley. Friends may call 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Six Mile cemetery Memorial Fund, 419 Seminole Drive, Independence, Mo. 64056.

ALICE M. RENFROW

Alice Marie Renfrow, 87, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.

Mrs. Renfrow was born May 23, 1910, in Independence and had lived in Independence all her life. She moved to Blue Springs one and a half years ago. She and her husband, James P. Renfrow Sr., started Industrial Valve Works and later Machinery Spare Parts on Truman Road in Independence, where she was vice president of the company until she retired at the age of 70. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was past chief of the Independence Temple Pythian Sisters 150. She bowled on the Rockwood Country Club league for more than 15 years. Her husband died in 1981.

Her survivors include two sons, James P. Renfrow Jr., Lee`s Summit, and Danny Renfrow, Blue Springs; three daughters, Pam L. McClure, Birmingham, Ala., and Betty J. Johnson and Patricia M. Brown, both of Independence; a sister, Louise Johnson, Independence; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel.
