IDA E. DENNING
Ida E. Denning, 71, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Miss Denning was born July 12, 1926, in Victoria, Kan., and had lived in Independence for 20 years. She was a sales representative for the Gas Service Co. for 28 years. She was a member of St. Mary`s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society at the church, and the Siena Club.
Her survivors include six brothers, Carroll Denning, Shawnee Mission, Kan., Art Denning and Dennis Denning, both of Salina, Kan., Max Denning, Hays, Kan., Ralph Denning, Russell, Kan., and Ad Denning, Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Armella Rusler, Hays; and 42 nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery, Lenexa, Kan. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.
GARLAND DILLON
Garland Dillon, 78, Pleasant Hill, Mo., died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Dillon was born June 12, 1919, near Strasburg, Mo., and had lived in the Pleasant Hill and Strasburg areas most of his life. He was a well-known area stockman and a graduate of the old Strasburg High School. He was an elder and Sunday school teacher in the Strasburg Union Church, president of the Strasburg cemetery Association, and on the Cass County Zoning Commission.
His survivors include his wife, Marjorie E. McMillan Dillon of the home; a son, Larry Dillon, Oak Grove; a daughter, Judy Vanderpool, Blue Springs; a sister, Arlene Gandy, Independence; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Stanley & Son Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill. Burial will be in Strasburg cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the Strasburg cemetery Association or the church.
LADONNA S. HURST
LaDonna Sue Hurst, 48, Higginsville, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Research Medical Center.
Ms. Hurst was born in Hot Springs, Ark., and lived in Lawton, Okla., before moving to this area eight years ago. She was a teacher at the Lakeview Woods State School for the past five years. She attended Texas Women`s University, Eastern Illinois University and Central Missouri State University. She held a master`s degree in physical education and a specialist degree in special education. She was a member of the Odessa Evangelical Free Church.
Her survivors include her mother, Billie Hurst, one brother, Anthony Hurst, both of Lawton, Okla.; one sister, Bobbye Aaron, Kempner, Texas; and her maternal grandmother, Evelyn Perkins, Lawton, Okla.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
LANDIE L. OLIVER
Landie Lee Oliver, 38, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Oliver was born March 22, 1959, in Independence. He attended Fort Osage High School and was a Navy veteran. His survivors include his parents, Orlando E. Oliver and Joan Casey Oliver of Woodridge, Ill.; one daughter, Miranda J. Oliver, Blue Springs; one sister, Vicki A. Workman, Blue Springs; one brother, Randie R. Oliver, Kansas City; his maternal grandparents, Mary Casey, Blue Springs, and Tom and Edie Casey, Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
ELLA O. PAGE
Ella Opal Page, 93, Stockton, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at the Stockton Nursing Home.
Mrs. Page was born Oct. 8, 1904, in Marceline, Mo., and lived in Brookings, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Richmond, Mo., before moving to Independence. She had lived in California before returning to Independence in the 1970s. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and the White Masque Players, serving in numerous offices, including production manager and president. She and her husband, W. Earl "Barney" Page, wrote and directed the 1935 Easter morning pageant at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, and continued to direct the pageant for nine more years. She participated in all church sponsored radio dramas on KMBC. She created puppets, and began using puppetry in worship and teaching, and also wrote and directed many presentations for puppetry. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Her survivors include one sister, Dora S. Cox, Stockton; one niece, Betty Morgansen, Bates City; two nephews, Jean E. Cox, Stockton, Mo., and Kenneth E. Williams, Kansas City; grandnieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center Hospice.
DAYMON H. PARK Daymon H. Park, Kansas City, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City.
Funeral services were today at Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel, Kansas City. Burial was in Leavenworth National cemetery.
WILLARD S. PHELPS
Willard Stanley Phelps, 89, Independence, died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Rosewood Health Center.
Mr. Phelps was born Jan. 6, 1908, at Mayville, Mich. He was a terminal manager for the Maiers Motor Freight Co. in Vassar, Mich., for 33 years, retiring in 1968. He was a Mason and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha.
His survivors include three daughters, Carol Ann Haller, New Jersey, Joanne Murphy, Kansas, and Mary Ann Evans, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
NAOMI R. RUSSELL
Naomi Ruth Russell, 76, Osage Beach, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at Osage Beach Health Center.
Mrs. Russell was born March 18, 1921, in Chilhowee, Mo. She was the editor of Herald House Publishing for 44 years. She was a member of the Oak Hill RLDS congregation. She was preceded in death by a daughter, LaVeta June Anderson.
Her survivors include her husband, Orrin Russell of the home; a son, Roderick S. Russell, Lake Ozark, Mo.; a brother, Walter Schwensen, Overland Park, Kan.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five nephews; and one niece.
Memorial services will be at a later date. Her body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center School of Medicine, Kansas City, Kan. The family suggests contributions to the Parkinson`s Research Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hedges Funeral Home, Osage Beach.
RAYMOND E. WHITE Jr.
Raymond Earl White Jr., 50, Apple Valley, Calif., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at St. Mary`s Regional Medical Center.
Mr. White was born Oct. 4, 1947, in Kansas City, and lived in Sarcoxie and Joplin in Missouri before moving to California in 1985. He was a diesel mechanic for Cummins Diesel for eight years and for Yellow Freight for 19 years. He was a graduate of Joplin High School, an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of the Baptist faith.
His survivors include his wife, Linda White, and a daughter, Rebecca Sue White, both of the home; two stepsons, Patrick Denner, Hampton, Va., and Richard Allen Denner, Springfield, Mo.; three brothers, Jay White, George White, and Charles White, all of Joplin; three sisters, Pat Likely, Independence, Eileene Taber, Joplin, and Mary Pollack, DeSota, Kan.; and one grandson, Ryan Denner.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Butler Funeral Home Chapel, Bolivar. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Bolivar. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
MICHELLE C. BLAKELY
Michelle Colleen Blakely, 44, Lawson, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Liberty (Mo.) Hospital.
Mrs. Blakely was born Aug. 11, 1953, in Memphis, Tenn. She owned and operated Jane`s Cardinal Drive-In in Lawson. She was a Sunday school teacher at the Lawson Baptist Church. She attended both Lawson Baptist and the Old Union Christian Union churches in Lawson.
Her survivors include her husband, Frank Blakely of the home; one son, Franklin Blakely, Lawson; one daughter, Christy Long, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; her parents, Judy and Bobby Parton, Lawson; one brother, Lawrence E. Cady Jr., Kansas City; her maternal grandmother, Mona Thompson, Independence; three stepbrothers, two stepsisters; and two grandchildren, Nikolas Blakely and Brooke Long.
Funeral services were Sunday at Jarman Funeral Home, Lawson. Burial was in the Old Union cemetery, east of Lawson.
BESSIE M. CANTERBURY
Bessie Marie Canterbury, 83, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at St. Mary`s Manor in Blue Springs.
Mrs. Canterbury was born Aug. 31, 1914, in Oakland, Mo. As a child, she played piano while her father played the fiddle for box dinners and church socials. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Hubert R. Canterbury, and two infant children, June and Shirley.
Her survivors include two daughters, Jean Steinman and Thelma Anderson, both of Blue Springs;two sons, H.R. "Bud" Canterbury, Independence, and Robert E. "Bob" Canterbury, Fort Dodge, Iowa; a brother, Robert E. Cartmill, Independence; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Buckner Hills cemetery. Friends may call until 8:30 tonight at Reppert-Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer`s Unit at St. Mary`s Manor.
VIOLA M. CONWELL
Viola Maybelle Conwell, 90, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Conwell was born Aug. 2, 1907, in Muldrow, Okla. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Blue Springs. She was a mother and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer B. Conwell, Dec. 2, 1995, and one son, Lloyd B. Conwell.
Her survivors include one son, James Conwell, Oklahoma City, Okla.; five daughters, Virginia Lung, Helen Stallbories, Patricia Brock and Ruby Dryer, all of Independence, and Kay Mahan, Seattle; 29 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.
