ALTON K. GRAHAM SR.
Alton Kirk Graham Sr., 96, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Graham was born June 23, 1901, in Lathrop, Mo., and lived in Independence for more than 30 years. He had been a grain sprouter for Cargill Grain Elevator for 25 years, retiring in 1966. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Independence. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eliza Graham in 1940, and a son, Alton Kirk Graham Jr. in 1976; and two grandsons.
His survivors include his wife, Hattie G. Graham of the home; three daughters, Thelma M. Copridge and Barbara E. Nutter, both of Independence, and Marsha G. Graham of the home; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Second Baptist Church, 116 E. White Oak, Independence. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
EVERETT G. LEE
Everett Gale Lee, 75, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Hospital.
Mr. Lee was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Milford, Mo. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and received two purple hearts. He retired from Livers Bronze Co. in 1988 as a draftsman.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Lee of the home; one son, Kim Allen Lee, Kansas City; one daughter, Linda AnnPoole, Kansas City; two brothers, Gaylord Lee, Kansas City, and Bob Lee, Wichita, Kan.; one sister, Dorothy Fay Platt, Houston, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Chapel. Visitation is 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
MATHILDA "MARGE" LUPTAK
Mathilda "Marge" Luptak, 77, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Luptak was born March 1, 1920, in Chelsea, Wis. She moved to Independence since 1994 after living most of her life in Chicago. She was a machine operator for Mars Candy Co., retiring in 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband Ivan G. Luptak in 1992.
Survivors include her goddaughter, Alice C. Zittlow, Independence; two brothers, William Zittlow, Grand Rapids, Minn, and Gustva Zittlow, Medford, Wis., and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Oak Park, Ill. Burial is in Mount Emblem cemetery, Elmhurst, Ill.
DOROTHEA L. MCDOLE
Dorothea Louise Spargo McDole, 82, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. McDole was born Feb. 19, 1915, in Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada, and lived in Vancover before moving to Independence in 1959. She ran a beauty shop and grocery store in Vancover and a bakery in Independence. She was an ordained teacher in Cornerstone and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She volunteered for various organizations including Laurel Club, Meals on Wheels, Monday Luncheons, the RLDS Auditorium and Temple and the Independence Regional Health Center for 13 years. She cooked for church camps and dinners for many years. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Stanley Spargo, and her daughter, Pearl Miller.
Survivors include her husband, Glenn McDole, of the home, one daughter, Louise Benedict; four step-children, Stewart McDole, Lamoni, Iowa, Cal McDole, Glenda White and Joyce Baler, all of Independence; three sisters, Marjorie Nastave, Independence, Lenore McHenry and Alice Wood, both of California; one brother, Gene Porter, Ohio; two granddaughters, Jennifer Bendict Whitney and Lindsey Miller; two grandsons, Derick Benedict and Mark Miller; 11 step-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial is in Mound Grove cemetery. Visitation is 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Cornerstone Building Fund, 1316 S. Osage, Independence, Mo. 64055.
GRACE A. REISS
Grace Alene Reiss, 85, Liberty, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Reiss was born May 5, 1912, in Ramsey, Ill. She also lived in Greenwood and Courtney, Mo. She was a homemaker and a member of the Greenwood Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Reiss in 1979 and stepsons Frederick Wayne Reiss and Clyde Reiss, Jr.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Warner, Apache Junction, Ariz.; one stepdaughter, Nellie Mincey, Maryville, Mo.; and three sons, Jack Leroy Reiss, Charles Gary Reiss, both of Independence, and Robert Gene Reiss, Weston, Mo.; 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel. Visitation is 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. A private burial will be in Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens.
MARGARET C. TURNER
Margaret C. Turner, 94, Kansas City, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Mrs. Turner was born Nov. 16, 1903, in Orrick, Mo. She worked for Easterling Silver Co. She was a member of the Unity Temple Church on the Plaza.
Survivors include one son, Ancil Turner, Independence; one sister, Alice Cherry Holmes, Kansas City, and one granddaughter, Donna Phillips.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. today at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial is in Union cemetery, Orrick, Mo.
GEORGE E. WRIGHT
George Edward Wright, 65, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Wright was born Nov.16, 1932, in Kansas City, Kan. He was a navy veteran. He owned Wrightway Body Shop and was vice president of the Midtown Optimist Club and Outstanding Member Recruiter in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Wright, one daughter, four sons, Victor, Lucky, Jeremy and Anthony, all of the Kansas City area; one brother and two sisters.
Cremation. No funeral services Burial is in Leavenworth National cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family through the George C. Carsons and Sons Funeral Home.
ELEANOR M. ALLEN
Eleanor M. Allen, 80, Kansas City, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Woodbine Healthcare Center.
Mrs. Allen was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Neosho, Mo. She worked for TWA for 32years in the payroll department. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 55 years and a member of Northgate Baptist Church.
Her survivors include her husband of 40 years, Aldella Allen, of the home; a sister-in-law, Margaret McSparren, Independence; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Mondy, at Mount Moriah and Freeman Chapel, 10507 Holmes Road. Burial will be inMount Moriah cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, at the chapel.
RUTH M. GALLAGHER
Ruth M. Gallagher, 76, Lee`s Summit, formerly ofIndependence, died Oct. 7, 1997, at Lee`s Summit Hospital.
Mrs. Gallagher was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Arma. Kan. She lived in Independence for 33 years before moving to John Knox Village in 1993. She was active in the Independence music club for many years and sang in the Messiah Choir for 15 years. She was a volunteer at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center and then at Lee`s Summit Hospital, until her death.
Her survivors include her husband of 52 years, John F. Gallagher, of the home; one daughter, Martha Carlton, Independence; onegranddaughter, Dawn Hoyer, Independence; one grandson, Matthew Carlton, Atchison, Kan.; and one great-grandson, Zachary Carlton of Independence.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, at the Village Heights RLDS Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.
MILLARD C. HARMON
Millard Cole Harmon, 71, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Harmon was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Horton, Mo., and lived in Independence for 22 years. He retired as a truck driver from the Jack Cooper Co. in 1991. He was a Baptist and member of Teamsters Local No. 41. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Violet Harmon, of the home; one daughter, Leitha Wilford, Pomona, Kan.; two step-daughters, Linda Smith, Independence, and Sheila Engelbrecht, Oak Grove; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Garden. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to Children`s Mercy Hospital.
EVELYN M. HEAVNER
Evelyn May Heavner, 74, Buckner, formerly of Independence, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Heavner was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Freeman, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Heavner, in 1996.
Her survivors include three sons, Joseph L.Robinson, Overland Park, Kan., Arthur L. Robinson, Schell City, Mo., and Carl C. Robinson, Clinton, Mo.; three daughters, Sylvia M. Nichelson, Buckner, Patricia A. Reed, Independence, and Effie L. Johnson, Appleton City, Mo.; one brother, Thomas E. Hamilton, Osceola, Mo.; one sister, Catherine Heater, Independence; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons NolandRoad Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
