FLORENCE A. GOULDSMITH

Florence Antoinette Gouldsmith, 99, Independence, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998.

Mrs. Gouldsmith was born Jan. 3, 1899, in Bloomington, Ill., and lived in Andes, Mont., before moving to Independence in 1947. While in Montana, she wrote for a local newspaper and served as postmaster. She was a member of the Resthaven Restoration Branch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Gouldsmith in 1971, and her sons, Lester Lynn, Wayne and Claire.

Her survivors include two sons, Delmar Gouldsmith, Buckner, and Giles Gouldsmith, Orting, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were 1 p.m. today at Mound Grove cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

MARY G. RILEY

Mary Georgia Riley, 79, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999.

Mrs. Riley was born Jan. 2, 1920, in Bicknell, Ind., and moved to this area in 1947. She worked for the Bendix Corp., and then worked for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 20 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Mount Washington United Methodist Church and Eastgate Chapter 367 of the Order of Eastern Star. She graduated from high school in River Rouge, Mich., and was a Navy veteran of World War II. She married her second husband, George Riley in 1972 and he preceded her in death in 1976.

Her survivors include two sons, William M. Haynes Jr., and James R. Haynes, both of Kansas City; one daughter, Mary Beth Nelson, Sheboygan, Wis.; one brother, Robert J. Cullen, El Paso, Texas; one sister, Betty Watson, Alta Loma, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

ALVIN G. HAUSE

Alvin George Hause, 107, Hendersonville, Tenn., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, in Tennessee.

Mr. Hause was born April 27, 1892, in Nicholsville, Ky., and had lived in Topeka, Kan., in his early childhood. He moved to Argentine, Kan., where he graduated in 1912 from Argentine High School with honors. He attended Kansas City Junior College in pursuit of a journalism career. He worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star. He joined the Argentine Baptist Church in 1913. He then accepted a position as assistant secretary of the YMCA in Argentine. In 1915 he became licensed to preach and entered the Kansas City Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1916, he served as student pastor at the Wolcott (Mo.) Baptist Church. In 1917, he was ordained by the Wolcott church and was correspondent for the Baptist Denominational papers. He graduated from the seminary in 1918 with honors and accepted the call from the Maywood Baptist Church, Independence.

He married Bertha 'Smiles' Hunter on July 25, 1920. While at Maywood, he was secretary/treasurer of the Baptist Ministerial Alliance, chairman of several committees of the Southern Baptist Convention, president of the Englewood-Maywood Improvement Association, was a regular contributor to all the church and secular papers and was known as 'The Children's Preacher' for his story and object sermons and chalk talks. In 1933 he was called to the Bales Baptist Church in downtown Kansas City. His book, 'A Church at Work, ' on principles of church administration and leadership was published in 1936. The Doctor of Divinity degree was conferred on him by the Western Baptist Seminary in 1953. He was president of the Missouri Baptist Minister's Association and was Missouri Representative on the Southern Baptist Convention Radio and TV commission. He also served on the Kansas City Ministerial Alliances' Board, on the Board of Governor & Executive committee, Citizens Association, Kansas City, on the Board of Trustees of the College of Osteopathy and Surgery, Board of Trustees of Lakeside Hospital, and on the executive board of the Missouri Baptist General Association for many years.

He served the Armour Heights Baptist Church in south Kansas City in 1959 and moved to Orlando, Fla., in 1961. In Florida, he served the Florida Shores Baptist Church and was active in the Wekiwa Baptist Association. He was elected pastor emeritus of the Bales Church in Kansas City in 1965. He moved to Bradenton, Fla., in 1967 and later served as interim pastor at the West Bradenton Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Bertha 'Smiles' Hause on Feb. 12, 1988. They had four children, Truett Alvin Hause, David George Hause, Dwight Hunter Hause and Lois Elaine Hause. Alvin G. Hause is survived by three children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Burial will be Thursday in Bradenton.

ROBERT L. HARTSELL

Robert Leon Hartsell, 59, Clinton, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Mr. Hartsell was born in Foster, Mo., and had lived in the Kansas City/ Independence, area for more than 35 years before moving to Clinton approximately four years ago. He had been a tractor trailer driver for the Leeds General Motors Plant until retiring in 1990 after 30 years of service. He also worked for Little Robert's Auto Salvage delivering parts as a yard man.

His survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Hartsell of the home; two daughters, Pamela Sue Roberts, Weaubleau, Mo., and Tonya Michelle Sawtell, Independence; sons, Robert Duane Hartsell, Timothy Micah Hartsell and Jeffrey Wayne Hartsell, all of Independence; two sisters, Clara Belle Martin, Osceola, Mo., and Blanche Chamberlain, East Lynn, Mo.; two brothers, Kenny Hartsell, Jericho Springs, Mo., and Leroy Hartsell, Archie, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Blackman Chapel, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time at the chapel.

LORENA C. BADDER

Lorena Catherine Badder, 99, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.

Mrs. Badder was born Sept. 26, 1898, in Tell City, Ind., and had lived in Independence for more than 70 years. She was a member of the Eden Heights RLDS congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ammon Badder in 1991, a son, Ward Badder in 1996, and two granddaughters.

Her survivors include two sons, Robert G.Badder, Independence, and Charles E. Badder, Holden, Mo.; two daughters, Maxine Hattey, Bates City, and Edith Keehler, Independence; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.

ZOE E. PETERSON

Zoe Ellen Peterson, 89, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the Monterey Park Care Center.

Mrs. Peterson was born April 8, 1908, in St. Marys, Kan. She was a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple and a former member of Mount Washington Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Peterson, and a son, Clayton Peterson.

Her survivors include two sons, Gilbert Peterson, Lee`s Summit, and Cletus Peterson, Independence; a daughter, Beverly Ammon, Waukee, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Kansas City Baptist Temple, 5460 Blue Ridge Cut-off. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City.

MILDRED JOHNSON

Mildred Johnson, 87, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Warsaw Health Care Center.

Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 19, 1911, in Independence, where she had lived most of her life. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Baptist Church, where she served as a hostess. She was a volunteer for several years with the American Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon C. Johnson in 1993, and a son, Donald E. Johnson in 1998.

Her survivors include a son, Duane Johnson, Edwards, Mo.; a sister, Dorothy Denham, Independence; grandsons, Duane A. Johnson and Donald A. Johnson, both of Independence; granddaughters, Cindy Tong, Louisiana; Duanita A. Johnson, St. Louis, Susan D. Waggoner, Blue Springs, and Jamie Welch, Grain Valley; and great-grandsons, Brandon L. Johnson and Erick Johnson; and great-granddaughter, Michelle Johnson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

EDWARD W. BURKE

Edward Warren Burke, 80, Blue Springs, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Burke was born May 17, 1918, in Leavenworth, Kan. He was the owner/operator of Burke`s House of Antiques in Marshall, Mo., and founded, owned and operated Burke & Crosby Vending Co. for the past 30 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the North Spring United Methodist Church.

His survivors include his wife of 42 years, Mary Helen Burke of the home; six sons, Edward W. Burke II, Los Gatos, Calif., Gary W. Burke, Orangevale, Calif., Stephen E. Burke and Robert A. Burke, both of Folsom, Calif., Michael F. Burke, Salina, Calif., and Thomas E. Burke, Blue Springs; three daughters, Judi A. Godinez, Independence, Connie M. Maggio, Grain Valley, and Terri K. Helton, Blue Springs; two brothers, John D. Burke, Mission, Texas, and Robert Burke, Leavenworth; three sisters, Shirley Mustain, Springfield, Mo., Emmajean McEvroy and Ruth Parsons, both of Leavenworth; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be noon Saturday at the church. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the building fund at the church.

PEARL E. JARBOE

Pearl E. Jarboe, 86, Independence, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Jarboe was born Aug. 12, 1911, in Brookfield, Mo., and lived in Excelsior Springs, Mo., before moving to Independence 40 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank D. Jarboe, and a daughter, Donna L. Roofener.

Her survivors include three daughters, Lola J. Richardson, Lynnwood, Wash., H. Elaine Halastik, Independence, and Edna P. Brundick, Lee`s Summit; a son, Donald Kelly Jarboe, Blue Springs; a sister, Lola Young, Excelsior Springs; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Cremation. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the family to help defray funeral expenses.

JOHN H. MOSS

John Henry Moss, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Moss was born May 28, 1922, in Buckner. He worked for the Jones Truck Line for 33 years, retiring in 1979, and was a member of Teamsters Local Union 41.

His survivors include his wife, Alma Moss of the home; two sons, John R. Moss, Bates City, and Jerry W. Moss, Independence; two brothers, Everett Moss, Kansas City, and Russell Moss, Independence; two sisters, Ada Mae Woods and Florella Reynolds, both of Independence; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

MARVIE O. SMITH

Marvie Opal Smith, Warrensburg, Mo., died Monday, May 18, 1998, at the Western Missouri Medical Center.

Mrs. Smith was born in Chilhowee, Mo., and she graduated from the Chilhowee High School before attending Warrensburg Normal School (Central Missouri State University). She taught in the rural schools and was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She was a charter member of the Hickory Grove Homemakers Club and was a member of Lady`s Elk and several bridge clubs. She and her husband farmed in the Chilhowee and Warrensburg areas until retirement in early 1980s. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Smith on July 19, 1985.

Her survivors include a daughter, Vivian Brown, Kansas City; a granddaughter, Debbie Swartz, Blue Springs; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia Foundation and may be left in care of the funeral home.

BARBARA J. KIRK

Barbara Jean Kirk, 52, Independence, formerly of Columbia, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Graveside services were today at Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Arrangements were under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

NORRIS C. LIMPUS

Norris C. Limpus, 94, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Limpus was born Oct. 16, 1903, in Everett, Mo. He owned and operated Limpus Manufacturing Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1978. He was an avid horseman, accumulating many awards and honors for training and showing horses. He was a member of the Northwestern Foxtrotter Association and the Arkansas Cavalcade. He was a life member of the Jackson County Sheriff's Posse.

His survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ida May Limpus of the home; a brother-in-law, William Searight, and his wife, Jane, Anaheim, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

DONALD J. MONTEL

Donald Jacob Montel, 74, Oak Grove, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Montel was born Nov. 1, 1923, in Silver Lake, Ind. He was an operating engineer at the Medical Center of Independence, and a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was an elder of the Church of Jesus Christ, Oak Grove Restoration Branch, and a member of the Union of Operating Engineers and the Fleet Reserves of San Leandro, Calif.

His survivors include his wife, Marcella J. Green Montel of the home; a stepdaughter, Lloy Jane Stowell, Grain Valley; a stepson, James A. Green, Jonesboro, Ga.; a daughter, Sandy Tusing, Indiana; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a niece, Susan Butcher.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley.

CHESTER R. ROLLINS

Chester R. Rollins, 93, Grain Valley, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Rollins was born April 28, 1905, in Cullman, Ala. He was a professional chef, and a member of the Plaza Heights Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia Rollins in 1968, and a son, Joseph Rollins in 1992.

His survivors include a son, George C. Rollins, and a daughter, Shari L. Anderson, both of Grain Valley; six grandchildren, Shari Chrisman, Shawn Fry, Norman and Joseph Anderson, and Kurt and Buddy Cannata; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Saturday at the church; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Single Ministry of Plaza Heights Baptist Church, 1500 S.W. Clark Road, Blue Springs, Mo. 64015. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

RAYMOND W. SCHELP

Raymond William Schelp, 77, Independence, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at the New South Park Care Center, Kansas City.

Mr. Schelp was born Sept. 27, 1921, near Concordia, Mo., and had lived in Independence for 42 years. He and his wife, Lexie, were radio and television entertainers for many years, and he did commercial delivery work in the Kansas City area. He was a 91st Infantry veteran of World War II, and was in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the Musician's Union, Teamster's Union, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000.

His survivors include his wife, Lexie Schelp, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond Schelp Jr. and Leslie Schelp, Morgan Hill, Calif., and Michael and Katie Schelp, Independence; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Suzanne Schelp-Pierson and Ron Pierson, Warrensburg, Mo., Karen and Randy Tope, Phoenix, Ariz., and Renee Schelp, Colorado Springs; a brother, Hoby Schelp, Independence; a sister, Edna Mahnken, Concordia, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Commemorative services will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Private entombment will be Thursday at Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Disabled American Veterans.
