ALTA M. BAKER
Alta Marie Baker, 78, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Mrs. Baker was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Grain Valley. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs and a volunteer on the Jackson County Election Committee. She was a homemaker.
Her survivors include her husband, Phillip Ray Baker of the home; one daughter, JoAnne Baker of the home; two sisters, Earlene Barnard and Gladys Harris, both of Grain Valley; one sister-in-law, Mabel D. Smith, Grain Valley; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home in Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. FAY COOK
Fay Cook, 77, Kansas City, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Cook was born Oct. 13, 1919, in Lamar, Ark., and had lived in this area since 1972. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vester Cook in 1989, and a daughter, Patricia Watkins in 1991.
Her survivors include a son, Gary Cook, Blue Springs; a daughter, Shirley Heffner, Independence; two brothers, Dan Clark, Chaffee, Mo., and Glover Clark, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; two sisters, Hazel Storms, Vanduser, Mo., and Myrtle Proctor, Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a step-great-granddaughter.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday at the Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
HELEN HARDER
Helen Kramer Harder, 98, Independence, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Harder was born Feb. 8, 1898, in Evansville, Ind., and moved to the Independence area in 1922. She worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant during World War II. She later worked for the Sturges Book Store in Independence and the Western Auto home office in Kansas City. She was a member of the Gudgell Park RLDS congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Harder in 1984, an infant daughter, Ruby Fern Kramer in 1918, ason, Ivan E. Kramer Jr. in 1996, a stepson, Byron "Bill" Harder in 1962, a grandson, Mark Butcher in 1979, and a great-granddaughter, Holly Butcher in 1986. Her survivors include a son, Robert D. Kramer, Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Esther Butcher, Lee`s Summit, and LaVon K. McKean, Independence; a stepson, Donald Harder, San Diego; two stepdaughters, Joy Browne, Independence, and Ruth Stanley, Topeka; six grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Temple Endowment Fund, Outreach International or the Gift of Hope Hospice.
PAUL N. POORT
Paul N. Poort, 64, Green Ridge, Mo., died Thursday, Feb. 6 1997, at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, Mo.
Mr. Poort was born April 1, 1932, in Fayette, Mo. He was a bus driver for the Green Ridge School District for 25 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Sedalia (Mo.) RLDS congregation and the Antique Tractor Club in Chilhowee, Mo.
His survivors include his wife, M. Arlene Underwood Poort of the home; two daughters, Janis Savage, Blue Springs, and Kathy Boyle, Osceola, Mo.; a son, Damian Poort, Windsor, Mo.; five brothers, Curtis Poort and Robert Poort, both of Sedalia, Gary Poort, Orange County, Calif., Merlin Poort, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Ronald Poort; eight sisters, Norma Elwell and June Williams, both of Independence, Shirley Warner, Kansas City, Joan Marr, Warrensburg, Mo., Joyce Moss, Phoenix, Ariz., Pearl Bradley, Dayton, Ohio, Diana Ellison, Liberty, Mo., and Gail Pettis, Sedalia; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were today at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor. Burial was in Mineral Creek cemetery, Leeton, Mo. A memorial fund has been established and contributions may be made in care of the funeral home.
STERLING C. WITHERELL
Sterling C. Witherell, 88, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Witherell was born April 22, 1908, in Dahinda, Ill., and had lived in Independence for more than 50 years. He was a truck mechanic until his retirement. He was the former president of the American Silkie Bantam Club for more than 30 years. He had also achieved his lifetime pilot`s license. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mable Witherell in 1995.
His survivors include a brother, Gale Witherell, Independence; a sister, Marian Boyer, Blue Springs; and two nephews.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
CARLTON F. PAWSEY
Carlton F. Pawsey, 90, Hamilton, Mo., died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at a nursing home in Hamilton.
Mr. Pawsey was born Feb. 6, 1908, in Hamilton and had lived most of his life in Hamilton. He had been employed by WPA, Johnson Construction Co., and Lake City Arsenal.
His survivors include his wife, Juanita Pawsey, Hamilton; two sons, Rex Pawsey, Independence, and Bill Pawsey, Dallas, Texas.; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at the Bram Funeral Home, Hamilton. Burial was in Highland cemetery, Hamilton.
LETHA J. WOODS
Letha Jane Woods, 97, Odessa, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at New Haven Nursing Home, Odessa.
Mrs. Woods was born Aug. 8, 1901, in Missouri City, Mo., and had lived in the Independence/Blue Springs area for 67 years before moving to Odessa a few years ago. She was a homemaker. She loved to piece quilts and crochet. She was an active member of Anchor Point Baptist Church, Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Fred Woods, and two children, E.J. Woods and Elmo Woods.
Her survivors include a son, Ernest D. Woods, Buckner; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brown Funeral Home, 300 Adams, Buckner. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Anchor Point Baptist Church, 25501 East Bundschu Road, Independence, Mo. 64056.
GEORGE M. LaROCK
George M. LaRock of Columbia, Mo., died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at Memorial Woodland Hospital in The Woodlands, Texas.
Mr. LaRock was born Nov. 9, 1916, in Las Animas, Colo. He graduated from Northeast High School, Kansas City, the Andrew Drumm Farm for Boys, and was a 1939 graduate of the University of Missouri. He worked for the State Association for Retarded children, was president of the Higginsville Association for Retarded Children, and on the board of Retarded Association of Missouri. He was on the board of Woodhaven Sheltered workshop for eight years. As a member of Cosmos Club International, he helped organize the Advent Sheltered Workshop. He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church. He was past president of TPA. He retired from Wilson Trailer Co. He delivered Meals on Wheels until his death. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Renee LaRock in October 1968.
His survivors include his wife, June LaRock of Columbia; two daughters, Janice Hendrickson, Hutchinson, Kan., and Judy LaRock-Mosley, The Woodlands; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, Columbia, Mo. Burial will be in the Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. JENNIE I. MAHURIN
Jennie Irene Combs Mahurin, 87, Independence, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Mahurin was born Nov. 29, 1911, in Conneaut, Ohio. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She had been a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Martin Mahurin Sr. in 1980.
Survivors include three daughters, Eva Sparks, Nevada, Mo., Joyce Ketterman, Salina, Okla., and Dorothy Turner, Babson Park, Fla.; a son, Harold M. Mahurin Jr., Blue Springs; a sister, Ruth Cook, Manvel, Texas; two brothers, Coral Combs, Independence, and Frank Combs, Dearborn Heights, Mich.; 21 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Hope House.
PEARL F. MOORE
Pearl Frances Moore, 89, Oak Grove, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mrs. Moore was born Aug. 30, 1909, in Blue Springs, and had lived in the Oak Grove area all of her life. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Oak Grove. She was also a member of the Oak Grove home Economics Club, the Dirt Daubers and a long-time 4-H leader. She was honored as First Lady of Oak Grove in 1993. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Harry Moore, in July 1989.
Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Charley Akin, Oak Grove; a son, Richard Moore, Oak Grove; five grandchildren; six step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Royer Funeral home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the Royer Chapel.
RAYMOND E. GADBERRY SR.
Raymond Everett Gadberry Sr. of Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Gadberry was born July 25, 1920, in Pittsburg, Kan., and had lived in the Independence area most of his life. He was a pilot with various airlines for 25 years, retiring in 1970. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
His survivors include a son, Ray Gadberry Jr., Gallatin Gateway, Mont.; two daughters, Jana Eisenbart-Buttgen, Independence, and Vicki Rhodes, Dublin, Calif.; one brother, Glenn Gadberry, Enid, Okla.; one sister, Ruth Bates, Columbus, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
LOIS F. SIGLOCH
Lois Frances Sigloch, 70, Raytown, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Sigloch was born in Lexington, Mo. She was a homemaker and a member of Six Mile Baptist Church. Her husband, William Vernon Sigloch, died in 1994.
Her survivors include one son, Ronald Sigloch, Raytown; and one daughter, Linda Sutton, Independence; seven grandchildren, Stacie Burks, Stephannie Sigloch, Shellie Hoffman, Wendle Sutton, Christie Bisbee and Kimberly Sigloch, all of Independence, and Ronald Sigloch, Grandview; and 13 grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
DEAN H. VANDERWOOD
Dean Henry Vanderwood, 91, Lamoni, Iowa, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Vanderwood was born Nov. 26, 1907, in Independence, and lived in Independence and Branson, Mo., moving to Lamoni in 1991. He retired from Westinghouse Turbine Engine Manufacturing in Kansas City, and after moving to Branson, he worked at Silver Dollar City. He graduated from William Chrisman High School, and served some time with the Missouri State Guard during World War II. He attended Stone Church, South Crysler and Blue Ridge RLDS congregations. He was an elder in the RLDS church and served as pastor in the Branson and Berryville, Ark., congregations. He did missionary work in Honduras and Mexico, and was an avid fisherman.
His survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dorotha Vanderwood, Lamoni; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gene and Carol Vanderwood, Lamoni, Wayne Vanderwood, New Hampton, Mo., and John and Kathie Vanderwood, Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Hazel Close, Lee's Summit; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were today at the Lamoni RLDS Church. The family suggests contributions to the La Buena Fe Honduras Medical Center. Arrangements for cremation and services were under the direction of the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home, Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.
DONALD E. BLACK
Donald Eugene Black, 54, Grain Valley, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at the Marian Health Center, Sioux City, Iowa.
Mr. Black was born Nov. 1, 1943, in Kennett, Mo. He was self-employed. He was a member of Independence Masonic Lodge 76 and the Wings Flying Club of Grain Valley.
His survivors include his wife, Sharon Black of the home; three sons, Damon Black, Buckner, and J.D. Black and Robert Black, both of Blue Springs; a half sister, Rosalee Bahr, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; one brother, Fred R. Black, Beaverton, Ore.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 7:30 tonight at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs; cremation. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.
EUGENE M. "GENE" BURKE
Eugene M. "Gene" Burke, 78, Kansas City, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Kansas City.
Mr. Burke was born July 20, 1920, in Kansas City. He was in the Merchant Marines and in the Armed Forces during World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Virginia Lord Burke of the home; one daughter, Dorothy Estevez; a companion, Tammy Rivera; and many other relatives.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Charter Funerals in Kansas City. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
JERALD L. CONNERLEY
Jerald Lee Connerley, 50, Kansas City, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998.
Mr. Connerley was born July 10, 1948, in Kansas City.
His survivors include his wife, Kathy Schmidt-Connerley of the home; two sons, Jerry Schmidt and Eric Schmidt, and one daughter, Stephanie Schmidt, all of Kansas City; and one brother, Earl F. Connerley, and one sister, Lillian Trapp, both of Independence.
