ROBERT L. LEWIS
Robert L. Lewis, 64, of Bates City, formerly of Blue Springs, died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at the home.
Mr. Lewis was born April 14, 1932, in Kansas City. He worked at the General Motors Leeds plant for 30 years. He was a member of the Hickman Mills Church of Christ.
His survivors include his wife, Donna J. Lewis, of the home; three sons, Joseph S. Lewis, Dallas, Robert A. Lewis, Tulsa, Okla., and Johnathon B. Lewis, Blue Springs; a daughter, Barbara S. Lewis, Mission, Kan.; four granddaughters and one great-grandson.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Newcomer`s Floral Hills Chapel. Interment will be in Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hickman Mills Church of Christ, The American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer`s Association.
MADLYN L. MAY
Madlyn L. May, 73, of Blue Springs died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at the St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City.
Mrs. May was born on Dec. 9, 1923, in Milan, Mo. She moved to Independence in 1958, then to Blue Springs in 1995. She was a homemaker and a member of Topps in Independence and Blue Springs. She was a member of St. John LaLande Catholic Church, where she served as a eucharistic minister. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. May, on June 24, 1993.
Her survivors include two sons, Mike May, Blue Springs, and Mark May, Independence; four daughters, Mary Susan Clements, Cindy Salerno and Julie Robinson, all of Blue Springs, and Pam Ferguson, Lee`s Summit; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial in New Salem cemetery in Independence. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at New Salem Chapel. A rosary service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association of Kansas City.
DOROTHY O. WILSON
Dorothy O. Wilson, 86, of Kansas City died Thursday, March 20, 1996, at Kingswood Manor.
Mrs. Wilson was born on Dec. 10, 1910, in Sarcoxie, Mo. She was a graduate of Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., and received a master`s degree from Northwestern University. She taught in Missouri public school systems in Independence, Gilman City, Hardin and Cole Camp. She was a music teacher in the Kansas City School District until her retirement in 1976. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Boulevard United Methodist Church and the PEO Sisterhood.
Survivors include her daughter, Diane W. Blackwelder, Ames, Iowa; her son, Maurice Wilson, Springfield, Va.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial in Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Memorial contributions may be sent to Central Methodist College.
MOHLER L. COTTEN
Mohler Lorenzo Cotten, 80, Wichita, Kan., died Saturday, March 15, 1997, in Wichita.
Mr. Cotten was born April 24, 1916, in Natoma, Kan. He was a Navy veteran. He was a sheetmetal worker and had retired from Beechcraft.
His survivors include his wife, Doris E. Cotten of the home; four sons, George Cotten, Austin, Texas, Forrest Cotten, Wichita, and Larry Cotten and Ricky Cotten, both of Derby, Kan.; a daughter, Pat Alley, Blue Springs; and 12 grandchildren.
Services were today at the Smith Mortuary, Derby, Kan. Burial was in El Paso cemetery, Derby.
FLORENCE L. GLOMSTAD
Florence L. Glomstad, 89, Independence, died Thursday, March 13, 1997, at the Rosewood Health Center.
Mrs. Glomstad was born in Faribault, Minn., and had lived in the Independence area since 1974. She was a licensed practical nurse at several area hospitals, including St. Luke`s and St. Mary`s. She retired in 1974. She was a member of the South Crysler Restoration Branch Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Roy Glomstad.
Her survivors include a daughter, Leota Beebe, Independence; two grandsons, Dick R. Long and DeanN. Long; two granddaughters, Darlene L. Sweeden and Patricia Limbaugh; 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the South Crysler Restoration Branch Church in Independence. She will be cremated with inurnment in Mound Grove cemetery at a later date.
RUTHE M. GOUTY
Ruthe M. Gouty, 73, Independence, died Friday, March 14, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Gouty was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Chicago and lived most of her life in Illinois before moving to Independence in 1979. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, South Crysler congregation.
Her survivors include her husband, Paul A. Gouty, Sr. of the home; two sons, Paul A. Gouty, Jr., Kansas City, and Mark A. Gouty, Independence; two daughters, Susie Smoot, Independence, and Marcia Ryel, Bend, Ore.; one sister, Paulette Fragiosa, Altadena, Calif; and five grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the RLDS South Crysler Restoration Branch, 16101 Salisbury. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery.
KENNETH G. KEESEE
Kenneth G. Keesee, 64, Independence, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at the Illini Community Hospital, Pittsfield, Ill.
Mr. Keesee was born March 16, 1932, in Urbana, Mo. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers-Hoisting and Portable Local 101 of Kansas City. He was employed by Bowen Construction of Kansas City. He was a member of the Fountain of Life Church, Independence.
His survivors include his wife, Alyce Campbell Crownover Keesee of the home; a stepson, Tim Crownover, Independence; three stepdaughters, Lin Templeton, Anna Soto and Susan Crownover, all of Independence; two brothers, Loren Keesee, Independence, and Vernon Keesee, Hermitage, Mo.; two sisters, Evelyn Butler, Independence, and Helen Bushnell, Redway, Calif.; his mother, Bessie Keesee, Independence; 12 step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Lummis Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, Ill. Burial with military honors at Crescent Heights cemetery, Pleasant Hill. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Pleasant Hill Fire Department.
LARRY K. LOVE
Larry Kendall Love, 53, Kansas City, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at Parklane Hospital.
Mr. Love was born Oct. 16, 1943. He was a former supervisor and clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years. He was an avid golfer and pool player. He was a member of H.P.A.C and graduated from LaPlata High School, LaPlata, Mo. He attended Northwest Missouri State University.
His survivors include his wife, Rosemary Love of the home; two sons, Jeffrey L. Love and Jason C. Love, both of Grandview; two stepsons, Gerald E. Wiggins, Kansas City, and Jonathan B. Wiggins, Lawrence, Kan.; his parents, Lawrence D. Love and R. Roberta Love, LaPlata; two brothers, Stephen C. Love, Liberty, Mo., and Randall Love, Leavenworth, Kan.; a granddaughter, Ashleigh DiMattia; a step granddaughter; and four step grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to8 tonight at the chapel.
OLIVETTA M. MOORE
Olivetta Maurer Moore, 91, Pompano Beach, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at the John Knox Village in Pompano where she lived.
Mrs. Moore was born Sept. 25, 1905, and grew up in Independence. She attended William Chrisman High School. She was a registered nurse, graduating from the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing in 1934. She had lived in Florida since 1968. Her husband, Stanley Moore, died in 1975. She was a former member of the Independence Pioneers Chapter DAR, of the Fort Lauderdale Women`s Club and the EE Chapter PEO and ofthe Federated Garden Club.
She is survived by a son, John G. Edwards, Provincetown, Mass.
There will be a memorial service at a later date at the John Knox Village, Pompano Beach.
THORALF K. OLTVEDT
Thoralf Kenneth Oltvedt, 77, Lee`s Summit, died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Oltvedt was born in Minneapolis and had lived in the Independence area since 1960. He worked for Electric Machinery in Minneapolis, Worthington Electric in New Jersey, and retired from Pitman Manufacturing/Emerson Electric in Grandview. While at Pitman, Oltvedt was sent to France to help educate country officials in how to use Pitman machinery. Oltvedt also helped establish a school for Pitman engineers in the United States. After he retired, he became a chaplain at the Sanitarium, continuing in that service at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center until his death. He was also head of the audio/visual department at the RLDS Stone Church, an elder in the RLDS church, and a guide for many years at the RLDS Temple. He was also active with the Lee`s Summit Social Services. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Alice Oltvedt of the home; two sons, Gregory T. Oldtvedt, Minnetonka, Minn., and Reed Oltvedt, Kansas City; two daughters, Carol Carter, Blue Springs, and Shauna Holmes, Fort Washington, Md.; one stepdaughter, Glenda F. Johnson, Independence; one sister, Irene Shuster, Brooklyn Center, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS World Hunger Fund, the Temple Endowment Fund, or to the Lee`s Summit Social Services Fund.
ULYSSES N. PARIS JR.
Ulysses "Junior" Namon Paris Jr., 66, Independence, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Paris was born Jan. 4, 1931, in Kansas City, and had lived in the area all of his life. He was a 1948 graduate of East High School in Kansas City and served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1948 to 1953. He worked for the Independence city water department from 1954 until 1995 when he retired. He was of the Christian faith. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Shell City Hunting and Fishing Club.
Survivors include his wife, Doloris A. Paris of the home; two sons, John D. Paris of the home and Steve Parkhurst, Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, Ernest L. Paris, Lee`s Summit; and five grandchildren, including Cassy and Stephanie Thompson of the home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Old Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.
JOSEPHINE M. ROBINSON
Josephine M. Robinson, 84, Blue Springs, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Robinson was born March 6, 1913, in St. Joseph, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She worked as a bookkeeper for 47 years for S.S. Kresge on Independence Square, and Kmart. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Methodist Church and the Lydia Circle, the Greater Kansas City Square Dance Club, Queen of Hearts, and she was honorary "Grandma Jo" to the Truman High School girls` volleyball and basketball teams from 1977 to 1983. She did volunteer work forthe American Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Haskell "Robbie" Robinson, her parents, David and Allie Pugh, one sister, Frances Castle, and a nephew, Charles David Castle.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel. Friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Red Cross in lieu of flowers.
EDITH TAYLOR
Edith Taylor, 92, Independence, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at the Swope Ridge Care Center in Kansas City.
Mrs. Taylor was born Feb. 6, 1905, in Tennessee. She and her husband, Joe M. Taylor, were farmers in Wardell and Pascola, Mo., for 20 years.She had lived in Independence since 1979. She was a member of the Baptist Church all of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe M. Taylor, and two daughters, Bonnie and Wilda.
Her survivors include one brother, Jack Taylor, Caruthersville, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Wardell Memorial cemetery, Wardell, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.
RICHARD W. THATE
Richard William Thate, 59, Independence, died Friday, March 14, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Thate was born Sept. 14, 1937, in Norborne, Mo., and lived in Independence for the past 20 years. He wasa foreman for the Lake City Ammunition Plant for 26 years, retiring in 1990. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
His survivors include his wife, Barbara, of the home; one daughter, Ethel Jackson, Independence; three brothers, Victor Thate, Houston, James Thate, Norborne, Mo., and Tyrone Thate, Lee`sSummit; and two grandchildren.
Services were today at Gibson Funeral Home in Norborne. Burial was in Fairhaven cemetery in Norborne. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
WAYNE D. YOUMAN SR.
Wayne David Youman Sr., 61, Kansas City, died Friday, March 14, 1997, at the Truman Medical Center-East Long Term Care Center.
Mr. Youman was born in Ucross, Wyo., and had lived in the Kansas City and Independence area since 1974. He was a truckdriver for Carefree Quarries. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Teamsters Union Local 541. He was of the Assembly of God faith.
His survivors include a son, Wayne Youman Jr., Sugar Creek; four daughters, Diana Ognibene, Claycomo, Mo., Karen Turner, Kansas City, Lanette Gehring, Hinesville, Ga., and April Youman, Independence; one sister, Donna Hanson, Salem, Ore.; and 17 grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Midtown chapel. Burial will be in Oakridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the First Church of the Nazarene, 900 S.W. Lakeview Blvd., Lee`s Summit, Mo. 64081.
JOHN H. BAKER
John H. Baker, 90, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997, at Liberty (Mo.) Hospital.
Mr. Baker was born Jan. 3, 1907, in Richwoods, Mo., and had lived in Independence for 40 years. He worked for AT&T for 38 years, retiring in 1971, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of Greater Kansas City. He was also a member of Rockwood Baptist Church and Potosi (Mo.) Lodge 131 A.F.&A.M. His wife, Irene Baker, died in 1978.
His survivors include five brothers, Buryle C. Baker, Ironton, Mo., Ben C. Baker, Belleville, Ill., Chester H. Baker, Rolla, Mo., Don F. Baker, Florissant, Mo., and Jim D. Baker, Cameron, Mo.; and a sister, Mary Ann DeGonia, Cadet, Mo.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
