MICHAEL S. CALOHAN
Michael Stephen Calohan, 57, Independence, died Friday at his home.
Mr. Calohan was born June 7, 1940, in Kansas City. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of Carpenter`s Local 27L for 30 years. He owned and operated AAA Stuco and Plastering Inc. for 28 years until his retirement due to illness.
His survivors include his wife, Arlene Calohan of the home; a daughter, Shannon Calohan, Independence; his brothers, William Calohan, Stanley, Kan., and James Calohan, Kansas City; six nephews, and seven nieces.
Services will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark`s Catholic Church, Independence. Graveside services and burial at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Floral Hills cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, Kansas City Hospice, or the R. A. Block Cancer Support Center.
VIOLA PEARL PEWITT
Viola Pearl Pewitt, 92, Oak Grove, died Thursday, May 29, 1998, at St. Joseph`s Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Mich.
Mrs. Pewitt was born October 1, 1905, in Salem, Mo. She was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church and the Oak Grove Order of Eastern Star, where she was a past matron of 1940. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom Pewitt in 1975, her parents, and eight brothers and sisters.
Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lea and Kenneth Adkins, Waterford, Mich., three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.
AGNES PORTER
Agnes Porter, 84, Vista, Calif., formerly of Independence, died Friday, May 22, 1998, in Vista, Calif.
Mrs. Porter was born Dec. 18, 1913, in Frazee, Minn. She was a homemaker and a member of the RLDS church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clay "C.G." Porter.
Her survivors include a son, Clayton Porter, and a step grandson, Benjamin Lee, both of Oceanside, Calif.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Interment will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
JOHN H. COOLEY
John Hunter Cooley, 75, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, in Intensiva Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. Cooley was born Jan. 30, 1923, in Denver, Colo., and moved to Blue Springs in 1970. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and also served during the Korean War. He retired from the Navy in 1975 and was employed at the Bayer Corp. as a training coordinator. He retired from the position in 1988. He was a member of American Legion Post 499, the Golden City Lodge No. 1 the Scottish Rite Consistory of Colorado; the Ararat Shrine Temple and Josepha Chapter No. 63, OES, Kansas City. He was an envoy member of Beta Sigma Phi. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Merle Brown in 1969. He was a member of the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church, Blue Springs.
His survivors include his wife, M. Colleen Cooley; two daughters, Caroline L. Waksman, Fairfield, Iowa, and Carol Davis Swafford, Big Spring, Texas; five sons, John H. Cooley Jr., Delta, Colo., Ralph H. Cooley, Moscow, Idaho, Herbert P. Cooley, Phoenix, Ariz., Don R. Davis, Denton, Texas, Mark A. Davis, Blue Springs; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, where Masonic services will be 7 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or the Shriner Crippled Children's Hospital.
AILEEN BUTLER
Aileen Butler, 69, Independence, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at her son's home in Wheatland, Mo.
Mrs. Butler was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Maryville, Tenn., and lived in Independence for 40 years, moving to Wheatland six months ago. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Clarence W. "Shorty" Butler, died March 18, 1995.
Her survivors include one son, John Butler, Wheatland; one daughter, Connie Ireland, Independence; one sister, Sue Powell, Parsons, Kan.; three brothers, Jim Hutsell, Bill Hutsell and Charles Hutsell, all of Maryville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Karrie Hampton, Brook and Bobby Sheilds, and Kelly and Mike Butler; and one great-grandchild, August Sheilds-Smith.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Buckner (Mo.) cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.
WILLIAM A. "DELBERT" DODDS
William A. "Delbert" Dodds, 86, Independence, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Dodds was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Boyne Falls, Mich., and had lived in Michigan most of his life, moving to Independence three years ago. He had also lived in Lawrence, Kan., for nine years. He was a printing foreman for Grandville Printing, Grandville, Mich., retiring in 1974. For the past five years, he was resident manager for the Chihowa Retreat Center, near Lawrence. He was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation, and had been an elder in the church for more than 50 years. He had been a pastor in several congregations in Michigan and Lawrence.
His survivors include his wife, Hazel M. Dodds of the home; one son, Wiliam G. Dodds, Cantonment, Fla.; one daughter, Linda L. Johnson, Wyoming, Mich.; one brother, Emerald L. Doss, Grandville; one sister, Elna E. Harvey, Independence; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Sunday at the church. Graveside services were today at Mound Grove cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Grand Valley Michigan Building Fund, 4790 Jacob St. S.W., Grandville, Mich. 49418. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
R.G. "BOB" DOMSCH
R.G. "Bob" Domsch, 86, Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at his daughter's home in Lee's Summit.
Mr. Domsch was born Aug. 19, 1912, in Olpe, Kan., and had lived in Independence for 47 years. He was a sales representative for Wyssman Meat Co., retiring in 1984. He was an Army vteran of World War II. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, and served as chairman of the parochial school board, superintendent of the Sunday school and served as an elder of the congregation.
His survivors include his wife of 56 years, Esther Domsch, Independence; three sons, David Domsch, Independence, Christopher L. Domsch, Liberty, Mo., and Ronald W. Domsch, Grain Valley; two daughters, Sheryl E. Hand, Lee's Summit, and Joy A. Press, Leawood, Kan.; and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Lutheran High School Building Fund, 414 Wallace, Kansas City, Mo. 64125.
GARNETT STEVENSON
Garnett Stevenson, 90, Independence, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at the Rosewood Care Center.
Mrs. Stevenson was born Nov. 20, 1907, in Edina, Minn., and lived in Emporia, Kan., before moving to Independence in 1950. She was a homemaker, and had worked as a food supervisor for Resthaven. She was a member of Farm Bureau of Gove County, Kan., and the HDU Extension Club of Emporia. She was active in 4-H Club activities in Gove County. She was a member of the Heritage House residence organization, Heritage House Band of Independence, and the Village Heights and Heritage House RLDS congregations. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Albert Stevenson in 1977, and a son, James E. Stevenson in 1998.
Her survivors include her children and their spouses, Evelyn M. Strickler, Scott City, Kan., Harold F. and Jan Stevenson, Emporia, Robert M. and Shirley Stevenson, Reeds Spring, Mo., Emijean M. and Jack Lowe, Florence, Ariz., and E. Mae and Harry LaMastres, Richard G. and Carol Stevenson, Kay and Dub LaMastres, Sharon and Roger Tuttle, S. Sharee and Michael England, and a daughter-in-law, Beverly Stevenson, all of Independence; 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Garnett Stevenson Memorial Fund, in care of the Village Heights RLDS Church or the Kansas City Hospice.
HOWARD R. ELROD
Howard Ray Elrod, 57, Lee's Summit, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital.
Mr. Elrod was born April 28, 1941, in Halltown, Mo., and lived in Independence before moving to the Lee's Summit area more than 30 years ago. He was the owner and operator of Preferred Dental Resources for many years, and was currently an equipment specialist with Patterson Dental Supply Inc. He was active in sports and coached several youth teams. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene, Kansas City.
His survivors include his wife, Edie Elrod, and one son, Brent Elrod, both of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Scott Delk, Independence; one brother, Glen Elrod, Clinton, Mo.; six sisters, Erma Misemer, Topeka, Velma Goodrum, Lamar, Mo., Helen Bailey, Carl Junction, Mo., Betty Runion, Bethany, Okla., Ruth Human, Tulsa, Okla., and Rachel Elrod, Aurora, Colo.; two stepbrothers, Howard Landess, Independence, and Warren Landess, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and his stepmother, Dorothy Elrod, Lamar.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to Cancer Research in care of the funeral home.
JUANITA GALLUP
Juanita Gallup, 77, Sugar Creek, Mo., died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mrs. Gallup was born May 10, 1921, in Sugar Creek and was a lifelong area resident. Her husband, Bennie Gallup, died in 1993.
Her survivors include two sons, Richard Gallup and John Gallup, both of Independence; two daughters, Judy Smith, Altamont, Mo., and Marsha Stewart, Blue Ridge, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
MARGARET R. MAYO
Margaret R. Mayo, 72, Lawrence, Kan., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Mayo was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Independence. She completed her education at the University of Kansas. She was a judge at many rose shows for more than 20 years. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Cosmo Pals, Ladies Literary League and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and had been a life member of the American Rose Society for more than 20 years. She was also a member of the Topeka Rose Society and Lawrence (Kan.) Country Club. Her first husband, John R. French, died Sept. 5, 1984.
Her survivors include her husband, Hays C. May of the home; two daughters, Ellen Jane Young, Lawrence, and Susan Margaret Rardin, Littleton, Colo.; three stepsons, Hays C. May Jr., Kansas City, Frank L. Mayo, Dallas, and John C. Mayo, Houston; one stepdaughter, Beverly Dietz, McLean, Va.; one brother, Robert Roney, Blue Springs; one sister, Patricia Stringfellow, Prairie Village, Kan.; two grandchildren, Kristina Ellen Young and Nicholas John Rardin; 14 step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Lawrence. Private inurnment will be Wednesday in Chapel of the Resurrection at Grace Cathedral in Topeka. JENNIE M. MILAZZO
Jennie May Milazzo, 95, Indepence, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998.
Mrs. Milazzo was born Oct. 10, 1903, in Metaire, La. She worked as a practical nurse, a cook at the City Hall in Kansas City, and as a babysitter in her home and at Natvity Church. She was a member of the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Nativity Altar & Rosary Society, and was a former member of St. Michael's The Archangel Church. She had been awarded a Distinguished Service Award from the Salvation Army. She entertained and played bass in the Independence Senior Citizen Kitchen Band. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Natalie "Chris" Milazzo, and a son, Dr. T.L. Milazzo.
Her survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Antoinette M. and William E. Brown, Independence; one son, Phillip A. Milazzo, Jenks, Okla.; two sisters, Mamie LaMonaco and Pauline Gordon, both of Prescott, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church, 10017 East 36th St. Terrace. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at Sheil Colonial Chapel, Raytown, where the rosary will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church.
SHIRLEY I. MILLER
Shirley Irene Miller, 72, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Monroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Fla.
Mrs. Miller was a 1944 graduate of William Chrisman High School. She had worked for Chrisman-Sawyer Bank, and for Drs. Fouts, Chandra and Troeh for 14 years. She attended Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa. She attended the 39th Street RLDS congregation before moving to Ocala in 1983.
Her survivors include her husband, Duane Miller of the home; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Gary Miller, Independence, Terry and Judy Miller, Kansas City, and Philip Miller of the home; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Cremation was at Hiers Funeral Home in Ocala. A memorial service in Independence is pending.
INEZ PAIT
Inez Pait, 86, Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at her daughter's home in Kansas City, Kan.
Mrs. Pait was born Oct. 2, 1912, in Smithville, Mo., and lived in Leavenworth, Kan., and Smithville before moving to Independence in 1958. She was a sales clerk for the Jones Store in Independence for several years. She was a graduate of Smithville High School, and was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Independence for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Pait on Sept. 11, 1995, and an infant son and daughter.
Her survivors include a daughter, Lynda Griffin-Rust, Kansas City, Kan.; three granddaughters, Shari Kay Flores, Hesston, Kan., Julie Marie Griffin, Houston, and Lorri Lea Griffin, Independence; and four great-grandchildren, Rachael, L.J., Nikki and Stacy Kay Flores.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 3601 S. Sterling Ave. Burial will be in Smith cemetery, Smithville. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the directions of the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower, Mo.
EDWARD B. SMITH
Edward B. Smith, 77, Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Smith was born in Edwardsville, Kan. He was a coffee roaster for Folger's Coffee for 39 years, retiring in 1986. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II veteran, and a member of Rockwood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Smith.
His survivors include a son, David Smith of the home; four brothers, Raymond Smith, Bonner Springs, Kan., Harry Smith, Olathe, Kan., Frank Smith, Overland Park, Kan., and George Smith, Peoria, Ariz.; four sisters, Ruth Smith, Albany, Ore., Alma Keeton, Stayton, Ore., Eleanor Quinlan, Edwardsville, Kan., and Jesse Krauss, Sedgwick, Kan.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel.
GEORGE C. HANSON
George C. Hanson, 80, Marietta, Ga., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998.
A native of McLeansboro, Ill., Mr. Hanson spent his early childhood in Florida. He moved to Independence in 1932. He was a graduate of William Chrisman High School and a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Hanson retired from Amoco Oil Corp. in 1978 after more than 36 years of service. He moved to Cobb County, Ga., in 1988. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. Hanson, of Marietta; two daughters, Margaret Ann Hanson, Blue Ridge, Ga. and Linda Conyers, Marietta; two sons, Douglas Hanson, Wichita, Kan., and Bruce Hanson, Blue Ridge, Ga.; one sister, Laura Ferree, Raytown; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, in the South Crysler Restoration Branch, 16101 Salisbury Road, Independence. All arrangements are under the direction of the Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home, Marietta, Ga.
