JOHN V. BUNYARD
John V. Bunyard, 92, Independence, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Bunyard was born July 1, 1907, in Ada, Okla. He was an insurance agent with Monumental Life until retiring in 1972. He was a longtime active member of Maywood Baptist Church.
His survivors include his wife of 65 years, Edith Bunyard of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Dorothy Bunyard, Independence; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Roger Hitch, Grain Valley; two brothers, Mark Bunyard, Chillicothe, Mo., and Basil Bunyard, Kansas City; two sisters, Eula Brown, Kansas City, and Helen Cloe Woody, Independence; and grandchildren, Kathy Rice, Holly Bunyard, David Bunyard and Lyle Hitch.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Maywood Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time at the church.
FLOREINE H. BURNS
Floreine H. Burns, 84, Lee's Summit, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at the Lee's Summit Hospital.
Mrs. Burns was born March 24, 1915, in Flemington, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She had taught music for more than 40 years and had been a member of the Birchwood Baptist Church, where she was very active in the music of the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale C. Burns in 1989.
She is survived by several nephews and cousins.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the building fund at Birchwood Baptist Church, 3883 Blue Ridge Boulevard, Independence.
WILLIAM C. DUTTON
William Clyde Dutton, 74, Kansas City, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Washington cemetery, Independence. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mortician's Service, Kansas City.
MARTHA G. HIGBEE
Martha Gale Gilbert Higbee, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Higbee was born Feb. 26, 1920, in Kansas City, and had lived her entire life in this area. She had worked for the Quartermaster in Kansas City during World War II and the Hotel President. She was employed by the Independence Examiner in earlier years. She was a lecturer on antiques for many metropolitan groups. She was a member of St. Mary's Church.
Her survivors include her husband, Philip J. Higbee, of the home; a son, Philip Andrew Higbee, St. Clair Shores, Mich.; two daughters, Roxanne T. Higbee-Ponak, and Michele Elizabeth Rohaus, both of Independence; and six grandchildren, Sarah and David Ponak, Jonathan and Zackary Higbee, Charles and Ryan Rohaus.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Midtown Chapel.
VIOLA "TOOTSIE" LEIGHTER
Viola "Tootsie" Jones Leighter, 99, Oak Grove, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Crescent Health Care of Oak Grove.
Mrs. Leighter was born Jan. 29, 1900, in Columbus, Kan., and moved to Missouri in 1917, where she was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Oak Grove. She was preceded in death by a son, Gene L. Leighter, and a daughter, Norma F. Morrison.
Her survivors include a son, Gordon R. Leighter, Mountain Grove; three daughters, Leslie N. Douglas, Marjorie Mainard and Alice M. Hilt, all of Oak Grove; 17 grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Greenwood (Mo.) cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Jackson County Association for Retarded Citizens.
JEWELL L. MYERS
Jewell L. Myers, 80, Kansas City, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Independence Regional Hospital.
Mr. Myers was born Dec. 22, 1918, in Turney, Mo. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He retired in 1981 from A.P.I.
His survivors include his wife, Catherine "Katie" Myers of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Marcy Myers, Los Angeles; a sister, Helen Taylor, Cameron, Mo.; and a granddaughter, Chelsea Myers, Los Angeles.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
WILLIAM J. NEVILLE
William J. Neville, 67, Independence, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at the Regency Care Center.
Mr. Neville was born Oct. 18, 1931, in Kansas City, and grew up in Assumption parish in Northeast Kansas City. He was a 1949 graduate of DeLaSalle Academy. He served in the Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict. He retired with 44 years of service from the Federal Reserve.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Danna Neville, and his daughter, Nancy Neville.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight at Sheil Colonial Funeral Home, where the rosary will be said at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to Cancer Action.
RONALD G. "JIM" STILLWAGON
Ronald G. "Jim" Stillwagon, 59, Odessa, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Lafayette Regional Health Center.
Mr. Stillwagon was born Feb. 13, 1940, in Marceline, Mo. He had been employed at Lake City Ammunition Plant. He was an Air Force veteran and served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
His survivors include his wife, JoAnn Stillwagon of the home; his mother, Edith Ansbaugh, Independence; a son, Don Braden, Kansas City; two daughters, Penny White, Carrollton, Mo., and Rhonda VanDeventer-Marrs, Odessa; a brother, Rolla Stillwagon, Springfield, Va.; two sisters, Neva Godard, Pleasanton, Kan., and Judy Williams, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association.
WILLIAM L. BARKER
William L. Barker, 71, Strasburg, Mo., died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mr. Barker was born Feb. 12, 1927, in Kansas City, and had lived in Fontana, Calif., before moving to Strasburg in 1961. He was employed for 28 years at the Ford Claycomo Plant, retiring in 1989. He was a member of St. Bridget`s Catholic Church, Pleasant Hill, Mo. He was a member of UAW Local 249 and had served as a trustee, vice president and president of the local. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy R. Fox on Jan. 9, 1983; a daughter, Margo Barker, and a son, William L. Barker.
His survivors include his wife, Barbara Barker of the home; his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Earl Wingard, Strasburg; a stepdaughter, Rhonda Wilkinson, Lathrop, Mo.; a stepson, Chris Noel, Stewartsville, Mo.; five sisters, Margaret Whiteside, Blue Springs, Anna Lewis, Independence, Alice Barker, Kansas City, Joe Helen Barnett, Torrance, Calif., and Jerrie Hogue, Pleasant Hill; three grandchildren, Keith, A.J. and Caitlyn Wingard; and four step grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bridget`s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Strasburg cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Stanley & Son Funeral Home.
LOUISE CLINES
Louise Clines, 88, Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at Truman Medical Center Easts. Clines was employed at the Andrew Drumm Institutes as a house parent for 11 years and retired in 1974. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Clines in 1979.
Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Guy Rice, Blue Springs; her grandson, Preston "Butch" Rogers; and several caregivers.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence.
DEAN B. KELLY SR.
Dean B. Kelly Sr., 81, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Kelly was born April 27, 1917, in Kansas City, and had lived in Raytown and Blue Springs for the past 45 years. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1945, serving on a troop ship and a destroyer. He and his father owned the Dean Kelly Clothier, a men`s clothing store for approximately 30 years. He later was employed at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 28 years, retiring as chief of security. He was a member of Ancient Order of The Hibernians.
His survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann Kelly of the home; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Dean B. Kelly Jr., Lawrence R. Kelly and Timothy V. Kelly, all of Kansas City, Michael P. and Joyce Kelly, El Cajon, Calif., and Donald M. and Theresa Kelly, Raytown; two daughters and one son-in-law, Carol S. Perks, Liberty, Mo., and Tricia D. and George Picard; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John LaLande Catholic Church, Blue Springs. The family suggests contributions to the church building fund.
ERIC E. KINTIGH
Eric E. Kintigh, 34, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital.
Mr. Kintigh was born Nov. 6, 1963, in Vis Bauten, Germany. He was a registered nurse at Truman Medical Center.
His survivors include his wife, Denise Kintigh of the home; his parents, Jerry Kintigh, Centerville, Va., and Roberta Bartlett, Great Bend, Kan.; paternal grandfather, Paul Kintigh, Norton, Kan.; and maternal grandparents, Ralph and Ruth Opie, Great Bend.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter`s United Methodist Church, Blue Springs. Previous memorial services were Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Great Bend. Arrangements are under the direction of the Webb-Freer Funeral Home.
MINNIE E. LEAP
Minnie E. Leap, 93, Independence, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Leap was born Jan. 21, 1905, in Kansas City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman F. Leap in 1965.
Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jean and Donald Reickard, Warsaw, Mo., and Lavon and Jim Kuder, Independence; three grandsons, Larry Kuder, Glenn and Kenny Habermehl; two granddaughters, Linda Reickard and Sharon Hoyt; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
MICHAEL J. SHIELDS
Michael James Shields, 15, Bates City, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998.
Michael James was born Nov. 20, 1982, in Independence, and had lived in Independence until moving to Bates City in 1995. He was a freshman at Odessa High School and a member of the football team. He had also been a member of the Odessa Little League Wrestling, eighth grade wrestling team and eighth grade track team. He had been in the Cobra Martial Arts of Kansas City since 1992 at the Whatsoever Community Center. He was a life member of the United States Judo Association, Colorado Springs, Colo.
His survivors include his father and stepmother, Jim E. and Susan Shields, Merriam, Kan.; his mother and stepfather, V. Marie and Kevin McGaughey of the home; a brother, Justin Shields of the home; two sisters, Wendy S. Cronister, Kansas City, Kan., and Jamie M. Willey, Lee`s Summit; maternal grandparents, Ernie and Betty Bales, Napa, Idaho, and Jim and Gene Scott, Mountain Grove, Mo.; his paternal grandparents, Ernest Shields, Slippery Rock, Pa.; his step maternal grandmother, Joyce McGaughey, Garden City, Kan.; his step paternal grandparents, George and Emma Sinclair, Shawnee, Kan.; and two nephews, Samie Willey and Cody Cronister.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Odessa Middle School. Burial will be in Concord cemetery, Bates City. Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Thursday at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral home, Odessa. The family suggests contribution to the Odessa High School Wrestling Program in memory of Michael J. Shields.
LeROY D. BRADFORD
LeRoy Daniel Bradford, 75, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Bradford was born June 24, 1923, in Parsons, Kan. He attended Wichita University for two years before entering the military, and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950, with a degree in architecture. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, practicing primarily in Missouri and Kansas, retiring in 1987. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the Independence Knife and Fork Club, Blue Ridge Kiwanis Club, and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
His survivors include his wife, Carol Bradford of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Paul Cocks, Kansas City; three sisters, Zoe Decker, Andover, Kan., Doris Hanson, San Antonio, Texas, and Dorotha Vanderwood, Lamoni, Iowa; 11 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
He donated his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center School of Medicine. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart or American Diabetes associations, or your favorite charity. Private arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
RUBY LINDSEY
Ruby Sperry Lindsey, 91, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at the Monterey Park Nursing Center.
Mrs. Lindsey was born in Higbee, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area most of her life. She was a Christian. Her husband, Herbert Lindsey Jr., died in 1976.
Her survivors include five sons, Ronald Lindsey, Urich, Mo., David Lindsey, Grain Valley, and Herbert Lindsey, Richard Lindsey and Philip Lindsey, all of Independence; a sister, Sarah Admire, Independence; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Crossroads Hospice of Kansas City.
