HOWARD W. WALKER

Howard W. Walker, 60, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999.

Mr. Walker was born May 1, 1938, in Abington, Pa., and had lived in Independence since 1992. He was retired from Prudential Insurance Co., and since his retirement, he had worked part time for I.P.C. Security and for the Independence Police Department in Handicapped Parking Enforcement. He was an honorary member of the Missouri Sheriff`s Association, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the 227th Aviation Battalion, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medal. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1738, American Legion Post 21 and the Vietnam Veterans of America. He was a Mason and member of McDonald Lodge 324 and the Ararat Shrine. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen M. Walker in June 1998.

His survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia "Cindi" and Fred Donahue, Independence; one brother, John Walker, and one sister, Marion Chubb, both of Pennsylvania; and three granddaughters, Crystal, Kelli and Ashley Donohue.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m.

Elmer L. Cummins

Elmer Leon Cummins, 69, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000.

His survivors include two brothers, William T. Cummins and Joseph Cummins, both of Oak Grove; two sons, Elmer B. Cummins, Oak Grove, and Bradley L. Cummins, Independence; two daughters, Brenda Smith, Dallas; and Beverly Hayes, Dillon, Montana; and four grandchildren.

Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Morticians Service, Kansas City.

James Thurlo Atkins

James Thurlo Atkins, Odessa, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Atkins was born Jan. 27, 1914, in San Jon, N.M. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Zala Eloise Christy on Jan. 17, 1947, and they resided in Warsaw, Mo., for more than 50 years until moving to Odessa in 1989. He worked for the Post Office as a clerk and then a carrier in the Warsaw Post Office, retiring in 1969.

His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Eloise Atkins; a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Lowell Moore, Odessa; a son and daughter-in-law, James A. 'Tom' and Judy Atkins, Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Calvary Baptist Church, Odessa. Burial will be in the Odessa cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa, and memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, Odessa.

JOHN A. BRAVENEC

John A. Bravenec, 33, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999.

Mr. Bravenec was born June 12, 1965, in Kansas City, Kan.

His survivors include his father, William K. Bravenec, Sr.; his mother, Alice M. Bravenec; a brother, William K. Bravenec, Jr.; a sister, Donna M. Hayes; and a grandmother, Ethel L. Allen.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Charter Funerals/Earp & Sons Chapel in Kansas City, Mo. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Bravenec family in care of the funeral home.

LESLIE CRAVENS

Leslie Cravens, 93, Lee`s Summit, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at John Knox Village Care Center in Lee`s Summit.

Mr. Cravens was born Feb. 1, 1906, in Wright County, Mo. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lee`s Summit. He was a Mason for more than 50 years and worked for International Harvester Company for 42 years. He was a resident of the John Knox Village before moving to the Village Care Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Cravens in 1996.

His survivors include a son, Robert J. Cravens, Blue Springs; a daughter, Judith Elizabeth Lord-Littleton, Colorado; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Langsford Funeral Home in Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Mt. Washington cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.

JOHN L. FERGUSON

John L. Ferguson, 73, Lake Lotawana, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Ferguson was born Feb. 28, 1925, in Kansas City, Kan. He worked as a shipping and receiving foreman. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #4, the V.F.W. Post 1000. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife of 35 years, Betty Ferguson of the home; a step-daughter, Martha Jene Shockley, Lake Winnebago.

Cremation under the direction of George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

JOHN L. FISHER

John L. "Red" Fisher, 79, died Thursday, February 11, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Fisher was born April 11, 1919, in Minot, N.D. He retired from Armco Steel. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Knights of Pythias American Legion Post 21, and the V.F.W. Post 1000. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Fisher in 1980, and his second wife, Marilyn "Jane" Fisher in 1991.

His survivors include a sister-in-law; two brother-in-laws; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens.

BESSIE EILEEN GEREAN

Bessie Eileen Gerean, 76, Glenwood Springs, Colorado, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999.

Mrs. Gerean was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Bismarck, N.D., and had lived in Independence for nearly 40 years. She was a member of the Rockwood Baptist Church in Independence. She also belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 3717 of Sugar Creek, and

served as Ladies Auxiliary President during 1991. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde E. and Dorothy Crandall Kunkel; and her step-mother, Ida Atkins Kunkel.

Her survivors include a son, Ronald Duane Buckles, Denver; a daughter, Deborah Eileen Ledeen; three sisters, June Wilson Kleber, Albuquerque, N.M., Iris Sitherwood, Mound City, Mo., and Dorothy Heck, Mound City, Mo.; two brothers, Clyde Kunkel, Springfield, Va., and Robert Kunkel, Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Andrew, Timothy, Kristin, and Tyra; and fifteen nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Speaks Midtown Chapel.

NOEL L. GRIFFITH

Noel L. Griffith, 63, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at Research Medical Center of Kansas City.

Mr. Griffith was born Feb. 10, 1936, in Mammoth Springs, Ark. He worked for Safeway until retiring in 1992. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Griffith in 1981.

His survivors include his wife of 22 years, Toshiko Griffith of the home; two sons, Kevin Griffith, Kansas City, and Brian Griffith, Kansas City; his mother, Rachel Cowen, Shenandoah, Iowa; a brother, Don Cowen, Shenandoah, Iowa; and a sister, Marjorie Barrett, Council Bluffs, Iowa; five grandchildren; and two nieces and two nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at New Salem Funeral Home in Independence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the New Salem Chapel.

ALBERTA R. MUNDY

Alberta Reika Mundy, 88, Independence, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at the Rosewood Health Care Center.

Mrs. Mundy was born Jan. 18, 1911, in Blue Hill, Neb., but had lived in Independence since 1967. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but started attending the Church of Jesus Christ, Missionary Restoration Branch in 1991. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron B. Mundy in 1965; a brother, Gerald Johnson; two sisters, Loretta Johnson Mundy and Lenora Johnson Brown; a still-born son in 1954 and one grandchild.

Her survivors include three sons, Aaron G. Mundy, Independence, William "Bill" H. Mundy, Powell, Wyo., and John L. Mundy, Independence; a step-son, Harold D. Mundy, Austin, Ark.; two daughters, Alberta P. Cunningham, Boone, Iowa, and Beverly J. Brooker, Independence; 29 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Laurence Johnson; three sisters, Ellene Anderson, Worland, Wyo., Caroline Denny, Worland, Wyo., and Eva Lee Hoffman, Tensleep, Wyo.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ, Missionary Restoration Branch in Independence. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Alva, Okla. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 on Monday. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence.

FRANCES I. WAGNER

Frances Irene Wagner, 70, Urich, Mo., died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at St. Luke's Medical Center, Kansas City.

Mrs. Wagner was born in Independence and had lived in Overland Park, Kan., and Houston, Texas, before moving to Urich in 1981. She was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church, Clinton, Mo.

Her survivors include her husband, Jim Wagner of the home; three sons, Mike England Sr., and Gary England, both of Independence, and Jeff Wagner, Miami, Fla.; a daughter, Jan Connor, Great Falls, Mont.; two brothers, K. Fred Heer, Blue Springs, and John Heer, Bentonville, Ark.; a sister, Helen Porter, Overland Park; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Clinton United Methodist Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Englewood cemetery, Clinton. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Vansant-Mills Chapel, Clinton. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society and may be left at the funeral home.

MARY V. FOLLMER

Mary V. Follmer, 88, Independence, died Friday, March 13, 1996, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Ms. Follmer was born June 23, 1909, in Jackson County, Mo., and was a lifelong Independence resident. She had been a self-employed hairdresser for 40 yeras.

Her survivors include 10 nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services were today in Salem cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer's Noland Road Chapel.

BENNIE F. HENRY

Bennie Franklin Henry, 89, Ozark, Mo., died Thursday, March 12, 1998, in Springfield, Mo.

Mr. Henry was born July 4, 1908, in Oregon, Mo., and had lived most of his life in the Kansas City area. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He worked for the Kansas City Zoo for 26 years, beginning as a zoo keeper and working his way up to assistant director. He retired in 1973. He trained the first African elephants at the zoo. He was a life member of the Friends of the Zoo, a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder. He was past president of the Young At Hearts Club, and served in many other capacities at the church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Henry in 1988, and a son, Thomas Studyvin.

His survivors include his son, Wayne A. Studyvin, Placerville, Calif.; three daughters, Jewell Harper, Amorett, Mo., Amy Ryan, Independence, and Shirley Cheatham, Springfield, Mo.; a brother, Bobby Henry, Peoria, Ill.; a sister, Violet Thomas, Springfield, Mo.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Independence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemtery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the Park Lawn Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

CHARLIE C. PASCHAL

Charlie C. Paschal, 90, Kansas City, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at The Groves Care Center, Independence.

Mr. Paschal was born Sept. 15, 1907, in Stout, Texas, and had lived in Aruba, Sunrise Beach, Mo., Independence, and the Kansas City area. He worked for Standard Oil Co. until retiring.

His survivors include his wife, Vivian Paschal of the home; a stepson, Gene Hansen, and a stepdaughter, Jeannette McKenzie, both of Independence; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Park Lawn Chapel. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

KATHRYN K. "KATHY" PETERSON

Kathryn Kay "Kathy" Peterson, 44, Manhattan, Kan., died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Mercy Health Center of Manhattan.

Mrs. Peterson was born Nov. 23, 1953, in Onaga, Kan. She grew up in Belvue, Kan., and attended Belvue Grade School. She graduated from Wamego (Kan.) High School in Wamego in 1971 and then attended and graduated from Crum's Beauty College in 1972. She also lived in Hays, Kan., before returning to Manhattan in 1995. She was a hair stylist for Hair Experts Design Team in Manhattan. She was a member of the University Christian Church was active in 4-H as a child. She was a homemaker and was with her children and their activities.

Her survivors include her husband, Rodney Allen Peterson, and two daughters, Stacey Peterson and Christy Peterson, all of the home; and her parents, Delbert and Clara Pinick, Belvue.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Edwards-Yorgensen-Meloan Funeral Home. Interment will be in Valley View Memorial Gardens cemetery, east of Manhattan. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society and left in care of the funeral home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, Kan. 66502.

MICHAEL P. SHELTON

Michael Patrick Shelton, 51, Independence, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Shelton was born Dec. 15, 1946, in Independence and he was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a millwright for Armco Steel for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

His survivors include four daughters, Terry Voyles, Tina Belke and Melanie Shelton, all of Independence, and Michelle Shelton, Raytown; four brothers, Danny Shelton, Tim Shelton and Pat Shelton, all of Independence, and Gary Shelton, Kansas City; two sisters, Irene Shelton, Independence, and Carol Meads, Harrisonville, Mo.; and 10 grandchildren.Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
