EMMA D. PARSONS

Emma Darlene Parsons, 87, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Parsons was born Dec. 18, 1911, in Butte, Mont., and had lived in this community for the past 50 years. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Parsons in 1989.

Her survivors include a daughter, Francie Parsons, Independence; a son, Bill Parsons, Independence; and two grandchildren.

Cremation. Friends may call from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Arthritis Foundation.

VICTOR A. PROCTOR

Victor A. Proctor, 84, Odessa, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Proctor was born April 29, 1914, in Odessa and had lived in Odessa his entire life. He was a farmer and had livestock and row crops. In the 1950s and 1960s, he worked for MFA and Odessa Special Road District. He attended Barker rural school and Odessa High School. He was a Baptist.

His survivors include his wife, Dorothy A. Proctor of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Cheryl Proctor, Oak Grove; a daughter, Vickie McMullin, Grain Valley; a sister, Vivian Simmons, Odessa; four grandchildren, Tiffany and Jamie Proctor, Lance and Michael McMullin; and two great-grandchildren, Kellsi Proctor and Codi McMullin.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home. Burial will be in Odessa cemetery. Friends may call until 7 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the First Baptist Church of Odessa.

WALTER L. PUHR SR.

Walter L. Puhr Sr., 73, Kansas City, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999.

Mr. Puhr was born May 10, 1925, in Independence. He was a graduate of Rockhurst High School and had attended Rockhurst College. During World War II, he was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps and flew in more than 30 missions. He was the recipient of the EAME Ribbon with four bronze stars and the Air Medal with four bronze oak leaf clusters. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired in 1987 from Mobil Oil Co., chemical division. He was a golfer and member of Knights of Columbus and St. Mark's Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard L. Puhr.

His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Kathleen M. Puhr of the home; a son, Walter L. Puhr Jr., and his wife, Kathryn Puhr, Overland Park, Kan.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and David Stewart, Kansas City; a brother, Robert Puhr, Washington; a sister, Dora M. Ramsey, Independence; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where the prayer service will be 6 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

GUY C. "DICK" TAYLOR

Guy C. "Dick" Taylor, 86, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Independence Regional Health Care Center.

Mr. Taylor was born June 28, 1912, in Maryville, Mo. He was a World War II Army veteran. He had worked at Bendix-Allied Signal for 224 years before retiring in 1977. He had been a member of the International Association of Machinists Union, and its Retirees Club 314. He was a member of the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife of 57 years, Viola A. Taylor of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Dee Taylor, Gladstone, Mo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Richard Sales, Independence; a sister, Betty Crabtree; four grandsons, Gean and Scott Sales and Brian and Craig Taylor; and four great-grandsons.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Park Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

MARTIN J. BURKE JR.

Martin J. Burke Jr., 82, Prairie Village, Kan., died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital.

Mr. Burke was born June 2, 1917, in Kansas City. He retired from Burke Sales Co. Inc. as owner and president. He was a member of the Leawood (Kan.) United Methodist Church and the Leawood Lions Club.

His survivors include his wife, Estelle Burke of the home; one son, Don Burke, Independence; one daughter, Gloria Knight, and one brother, Joe Burke, both of Kansas City; four sisters, Marge O'Malley, Blue Springs, Marie Weyrauch and Rosemary Warner, both of Kansas City, and Loretta Veerkamp, Neosho, Mo.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Leawood United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 2915 W. 95th, Leawood, Kan. 66206.

MALVERN L. MORRISON

Malvern L. Morrison, 73, Blue Springs, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mr. Morrison was born Oct. 16, 1924, in Cameron, Mo., and lived in Kansas City for more than 20 years, moving to Blue Springs two years ago. He owned and operated Morrison Construction Co. for more than 30 years. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

His survivors include his wife, Muriel Morrison, and his mother-in-law, Luella Haynes, both of the home; one son, Stephen Norton, Euless, Texas; three daughters, Traci Morrison, Kansas City, Terri Lea Romack, Fort Worth, Texas, and Melinda Surbaugh, Coppell, Texas; one brother, Kenneth Morrison, Humansville, Mo.; two sisters, Norma Pitts, Flemington, Mo., and Mildred Floyd, Columbia, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Shannon Norton, Richard and Matthew Surbaugh, and Jessica Glauser.

Services will be at 7:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel, Independence. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Humansville cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

RUSSELL J. BECKMAN

Russell James Beckman, 73, Kansas City, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at Research Medical Center.

Mr. Beckman was born in Dakota City, Iowa, and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a broadcast engineer with various radio stations, including KMBZ and WDAF, was a Kansas City Reserve Police Officer for 30 years, and owned and operated Russell Beckman Reality in Kansas City and Independence for many years. He was a Methodist by faith, and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrial Workers Local 1259.

His survivors include his wife, Mary Beckman of the home; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Vanessa Ainsworth, Independence, and Mable and Errett Russell, Sebring, Fla.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

MARGARET PIPER

Margaret Clements Piper, 86, Lee's Summit, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the John Knox Village Care Center, Lee's Summit.

Mrs. Piper was born in Lone Jack, and had lived in several different place while her husband was in the Navy. She moved to Independence in 1960. She was a trust officer with United Missouri Bank until her retirement. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence and the BPW, and was formerly a volunteer at the Independence Regional Health Center. Her husband, Richard Piper, died in 1960.

Her survivors include one sister, Mamie Mulligan, Lee's Summit; one sister-in-law, Nellie Fae Clements, Independence; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were today at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee's Summit. Burial was in Lee's Summit cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army or the American Lung Association.

REBECCA L. SHEARER

Rebecca Lynn Shearer, 39, Polo, Mo., Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Liberty Hospital.

Mrs. Shearer was born Oct. 24, 1959, in Independence. She was a medical assistant at St. Luke's Occupational Medical Center, and a member of the Knoxville (Mo.) Community Church. She graduated from high school in Independence.

Her survivors include her husband, Brad Shearer of the home; three sons, Ron Burns Jr., Andrew Burns and Michael Burns, all of the home; her mother, Barbara Canterbury, Kansas City; three sisters, Elizabeth Kahn, Trabuco Canyon, Calif., Alice King, Polo, and Karen Jensen, Independence; paternal grandmother, Nellie Hirst, Independence; and her maternal grandmother, Esther Schaefer, Kansas City.

Memorial services were today at the church. Cremation with inurnment at Prairie Ridge cemetery, Polo. Arrangements were under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home, Lathrop, Mo.

SAMUEL A. WOODY

Samuel Alvin Woody, 76, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Mr. Woody was born May 11, 1922, in Houstonia, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a lumber jack for the Jack Jones Lumber Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1976, and was a member of the Teamsters Local Union. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Virginia Sutton Woody, died in 1975.

His survivors include two daughters, Charlene Chavez, Independence, and Sandy Cocuzzi, Green Creek, N.J.; one brother, the Rev. John D. Woody, and two sisters, Emma J. Everett and Edna M. Link, all of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Jody, Billy, Angel and Michael; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Disabled American Veterans.

MARJORIE M. SCHWAN

Marjorie M. Schwan, 80, Independence, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Schwan was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Slater, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area since 1935. She had been a seamstress for the Betty Rose Garment Factory, and did seasonal work for the Jones Store Co. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she was past president of the Altar and Rosary Society, and was a volunteer at Independence Regional. Her husband, Emil Schwan, died April 6, 1997.

Her survivors include one son, Clifford T. Sinnett, and one daughter, Gloria P. King, both of Independence; one brother, John L. Yager, Kansas; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.

JAMIE W. STAPLETON

Jamie W. Stapleton, 19, Buckner, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital.

Mr. Stapleton was born Jan. 4, 1980, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was a laborer for Walton Construction, and a member of Local 264 in Kansas City. He was a 1998 graduate of Fort Osage High School.

His survivors include his parents, Larry and Kathy Stapleton, and one brother, Jody Reed Stapleton, all of the home; his girlfriend, Candace Deal, Blue Springs; his grandparents, Carl and Vera Burns, Levasy; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Buckner. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Speaks Buckner Chapel.

HELEN S. ANSON

Helen S. Anson, 92, Independence, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Anson was born Jan. 23, 1906, in Perth Amboy, N.J., and had lived in the Independence area for many years. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service after 30 years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence, where she had served as pianist and organist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie F. Anson in 1986, and a daughter, Elaine Virginia Anson in 1971.

Her survivors include one son, Leslie Anson, Independence; four granddaughters, Karen Anson, Laylee Brown, Melanie Brown and Leecil Anson; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Glenwood cemetery, Perkins, Okla. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Music Ministry Fund at the First Baptist Church of Independence, 500 W. Truman Road.

BELINDA K. BAGGETT

Belinda Kay Baggett, 42, Kansas City, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Menorah Medical Center.

Mrs. Baggett was born Jan. 7, 1956, in Memphis, Tenn., and lived in Clarksville, Tenn., before moving to this area five years ago. She was a salesperson for Home Quarters Warehouse, and a member of the Church of God Prophecy in Raytown.

Her survivors include her husband, John C. Baggett, and one son, Mathew Myers, both of the home; one daughter, Tabitha Myers, Blue Springs; her parents, Tom and Bonnie Coffman, Clarksville; one brother, David Coffman, St. Louis; paternal grandmother, Rosie Coffman, Cedar Grove, Tenn.; maternal grandmother, Alma Smith, Martin, Tenn.; and one nephew.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Coffman cemetery, Henderson County, Tenn. Friends may call from 4 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

DONALD L. BURKETT

Donald Lee Burkett, 65, Independence, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital.

Mr. Burkett was born March 20, 1933, in Independence. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 36 years, retiring in 1989, and was a member of the American Postal Workers Union. He was an Army veteran, a 1951 graduate of William Chrisman High School, and an avid collector of Truman memorabilia. He was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and Boy Scout Troop 226 and coached baseball in the Kiwanis League in the late 1960s and 1970s. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and Kansas City Heartline, a support group for heart transplant patients.

His survivors include his wife, Marilyn Burkett of the home; one son, Russell Burkett, Independence; two daughters, Nancy Schumaker, Independence, and Marla Ruiz, Santa Fe, N.M.; two sisters, Betty Scott and Sandra K. Burkett, and one brother, Denver Burkett, all of Independence; and four grandchildren, Stephanie Schumaker, Christopher Burkett, Ariel Ruiz and Emilio Ruiz.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Kansas City Heartline, P.O. Box 10145, Kansas City, Mo. 64171, or the Midwest Organ Bank, 1900 W. 47th Place, Kansas City, Mo. 66205.

ROBERT P. "BUD" CARROLL

Robert Paul "Bud" Carroll, 56, Eldon, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Carroll was born Jan. 20, 1942, in Independence. He began his employment with General Motors Fairfax in 1974, and has served as president of United Auto Workers Local 31, and was appointed to the UAW International staff in 1990. He was appointed co-director for the UAW-GM Center for Human Resources, Region 5, in 1996, where he was currently working. He was a member of the Catholic faith. His son, Tony Carroll, died in 1973.

His survivors include his wife, Brenda Carroll of the home; three sons, Todd Carroll, Raymore, Mo., Tim Carroll, Oak Grove, Joe DeVall, Surprize, Ariz.; one daughter, Tricia Smith, Independence; his mother, Audrey Carroll, Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Lanetta Stout, Nashville, and Glenda Paris, Climax Springs, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and one nephew.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
