WILLARD L. SKEEN
Willard L. Skeen, 70, Independence, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Skeen was born Jan. 21, 1927, in Deepwater, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He worked for Armco Steel for 27 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member and deacon of the Carlisle Baptist Church, an Army veteran of World War II, and was lead guitar for Sky Blue Gospel and Gospel Jubilee bands.
His survivors include his wife, Beverly Skeen, and a son, David L. Skeen, both of Independence; two sisters, Lorene Spick, Independence, and Irene Russell, Catoosa, Okla.; and two grandchildren, Matthew Skeen and Megan Skeen.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.
FLOSSIE F. TWEEDY
Flossie Fern Tweedy, 89, Buckner, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Truman Medical Center East.
Mrs. Tweedy was born Jan. 24, 1908, in Wier City, Kan., and moved to the Buckner/Independence area in the early 1930s. She was a member of the Buckner Restoration Church and was active in the Women`s Department and Quilting Group at the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Tweedy in 1957, a daughter, Virginia McDaniel in 1989, and a grandson, Leon Tweedy in 1995.
Her survivors include two sons, Charles H. Tweedy Sr., Flemington, Mo., and Clifford L. Tweedy Sr., Buckner; a sister, Edith Tweedy, Sibley; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
CLYDE E. WALKER SR.
Clyde E. Walker Sr., 76, Independence, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Walker was born Oct. 5, 1920, in LaCon, Ill., and had lived in Independence since 1975. He was a welder for McLaughlin Body Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His survivors include his wife, Eleanor J. Walker of the home; two children; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
FORDA B. CLAY
Forda Bruce Clay, 73, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Clay was born Nov. 25, 1924, in Hot Springs, Ark. He was stationed in Alaska while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for General Motors for 40 years before he retired. He was a member of the Raytown Christian Church, and attended the Adam and Eve Bible Class. His first wife, Maxine Tressie Huff Clay, died in 1989.
His survivors include his wife, Pearl Clay of the home; a daughter, Mary Hankins, Olathe, Kan.; four sons, Robert Fox, Osawatomie, Kan., Steve Clay, West Plains, Mo., Jay Clay, Kansas City, Kan., and David Clay, Farmington, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Kathy Smiley, Westlake Village, Calif.; three stepsons, Andrew Thomas, Independence, Charles Thomas, Minneapolis, Minn., and David Thomas, Holdenville, Okla.; a brother, Jack Clay, Butler, Mo.; a sister, Eula Mae Gray, Kilgore, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Raytown Christian Church, 6108 Blue Ridge Blvd. Burial will be in Shawnee Mission (Kan.) Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
ERNEST N. "ERNIE" DELK
Ernest N. "Ernie" Delk, 77, Wichita, Kan., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997.
Mr. Delk was a retired flight line mechanic for Boeing Aircraft Co.
His survivors include his wife, Doris Delk of the home; a son, Michael L. Delk, Independence; a daughter, Marcia Twombly, Troy, Kan.; a brother, Darrell D. Delk, Meriden, Kan.; a sister, Norma L. Holmes, Topeka; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Central Branch RLDS Church, Wichita. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olive cemetery, Troy. The family suggests contributions to the church, 1650 S. Water, Wichita, Kan. 67213. Arrangements are under the direction of the Broadway Mortuary, Wichita.
MARJROIE M. "G.G." GILLUM
Marjorie M. "G.G." Burgess Gillum, 74, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Gillum was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Little Blue, Mo., and was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a secretary for J.M. Steinhauser Real Estate from 1940 to 1971, and for the Independence School District from 1971 to 1981.
Mrs. Gillum was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence, serving in both Homebound and Communion ministries. She also served as the church clerk. She had been a volunteer at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital and a member of the Jackson County Board of Services for Developmentally Disabled.
She was a charter member and past president of the Beta Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, and a former member and vice president of the Tirey J. Ford American Legion Post 21 Auxiliary. She was first attendant to the queen at the first Santa-Cali-Gon. Her husband, John T. Gillum, died in 1993.
Her survivors include two daughters, Stephanie Gillum Walker, Charlotte, N.C., and Cynthia Gillum Schuler, Independence; a sister, Allene Stillwell, Seal Beach, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Ronda Schuler Scott, Aimee Schuler, Melanie Davis Saunier, Christopher Davis, Joshua Walker and Lindsey Walker.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Independence. Friends may call in the Fireside Room at the church immediately following the service. The family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Funeral Home.
LEONARD E. GUSTAFSON
Leonard E. Gustafson, 66, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Gustafson was born May 26, 1931, in Chicago, Ill. He was a salesman for Commercial Refrigeration and a member of the Lutheran faith.
His survivors include his wife, Marilyn J. Smithmier Gustafson of the home; a son, Kenneth Gustafson, and a daughter, Cathy Kushner, both of Warrensburg, Mo.; two brothers, Carl Gustafson and Arthur Gustafson, both of Chicago; two sisters, Doris Westlund, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lenore Nichols, Tampa, Fla.; his mother, Elsie Gustafson, Chicago; and six grandchildren.
Services will be 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg. Burial will be at a later date in Warrensburg Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
LINDA S. HURST
Linda Sue Hurst, 51, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Colonial Manor in Glasgow, Mo.
Ms. Hurst was born July 24, 1946, in Boonville, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area since 1967. She had been a credit manager for the Foley-Bellsaw Corp. since 1981.
She retired as a master sergeant of the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1987. She also served in the National Guard for one year and in the Air Force for eight years before going into the Reserves. She was a member of St. Paul`s Lutheran Church, Independence, and was a graduate of Brunswick High School.
Her survivors include her parents, Ercel and Nadine Hurst, and a sister, Dorothy Biere, all of Keytesville; her companion, Marcella Fite, Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Berry Funeral Home, Salisbury, Mo. Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery, Salisbury, with graveside services provided by Salisbury VFW Post 391. The family suggests contributions to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Salisbury, or the Colonial Manor Nursing Home courtyard project.
MARY E. SPRINGER
Mary E. Springer, 75, Independence, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, in Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
She was born in Galloway, Mo., June 7, 1922, and moved to Independence in 1945.
Mrs. Springer was a motel manager and owned a business with her husband, Edgar, who survives her. She retired in 1979. She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church, attending at the Christ United Methodist Church, Independence.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Gary, Independence, and Larry, Carrollton, Texas; two daughters, Connie Zuck, Lexington, and Donna Springer, Independence; brother Wayne McConnell, Modesto, Calif.; 29 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, at New Salem Funeral Home with burial in New Salem Cemetary. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, at New Salem Funeral Home.
FRANK "SKIP" D`ALLESSANDRO
Frank "Skip" D`Allessandro, 73, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mr. D`Allessandro was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Camden, N.J. He was Catholic by faith. He was a member of VFW Post 30, Blue Springs. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He had worked at Blue Springs Bowl and managed a restaurant.
His survivors include his wife, Claire D`Allessandro of the home; two sons, Anthony D`Allessandro and Alan D`Allessandro, both of Worcester, Mass.; two daughters, Rosann Query, Worcester, and Linda Golubski, Blue Springs; a brother, Anthony D`Allessandro, Worcester; and a sister, Teresa Barbale, Worcester.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
MYRTLE L. FRIEND
Myrtle Lodica Stowell Friend, 91, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at her daughter`s home in Bates City.
Mrs. Friend was born Dec. 4, 1905, in Dunseith, N.D., and lived in Independence and Littleton, Colo., before returning to Independence in 1961. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Colbern Road Restoration Branch.
Her survivors include her husband, Michael Joice Friend, Independence; four sons, Carrol Friend, Independence, Michael Donavon Friend, Holden, Mo., Glen LeRoy Friend, Grain Valley, and Lyle Duane Friend, Oak Grove; two daughters, Amaryllis Ruchaber, Independence, and Rosemary Lodica Harcourt, Bates City; a brother, Ben Stowell, Sibley; a sister, Dolly Grubb, Odessa; 30 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren;and four great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of Reppert-Brown Funeral Home, Buckner.
JAKE T. OSOWSKI
Jake Thomas Osowski, infant son of Ed and Debbie Osowski of Independence, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
His survivors also include his paternal grandparents, Chester and Ella Osowski, and maternal grandparents, Jim and Janice Cottrell, and Robert and Barbara Lane, all of Independence; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Wiercinski, Kansas City; and his maternal great-grandmother, Nellie Poole, Odessa.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
RAYMOND F. STEWART
Raymond Floyd Stewart, 71, Independence, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Stewart was born Jan. 30, 1926, in Kansas City, Kan., where he spent most of his life. He served two tours of duty in the European Theater of World War II. He was an active athlete and especially in professional baseball.
His survivors include his wife, Helen Stewart of the home; a daughter, Dr. Donna Carroll, Blue Springs, a stepdaughter, Mary Strobel, Independence; a sister, Evelyn Hulse, Lee`s Summit, a brother, Donald Stewart, Kansas City, Kan.; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Hawes, Amanda Carroll, Tyler Carroll and Jessica Carroll.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Maple Hill cemetery, 2301 South 34th St., Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Speaks Suburban Chapel.
ELLEN "NELLIE" M. McQUILLAN
Ellen "Nellie" Marie McQuillan, 90, Linn, Kan., died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at the Linn Community Nursing Home.
Mrs. McQuillan was born June 10, 1908, in Green, Kan. She was a member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan McQuillan in 1978.
Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John and Pat McQuillan, Independence; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Kay Baney, Raytown, and Patricia and Douglas Rhodes, Independence; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Sheil Colonial Chapel.
JOSEPH A. MONAHAN
Joseph A. Monahan, 59, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at the Independence Regional Hospital.
Mr. Monahan was born Jan. 19, 1940, in Pittsburg, Kan., and had lived in the Independence area for 36 years. He retired in 1996 after 36 years of service as an investigator with the Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights. He was the pack leader of Tiger Cub Pack 383 in Independence. He was a member of the Blue Springs Elks Club. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian A. Monahan in 1990.
His survivors include his wife of 39 years, Barbara L. Monahan of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Erin Louise and James York, Independence; his mother, Mary C. Monahan, Knoxville, Tenn.; two brothers, John Monahan, Haysville, Kan., and James Monahan, Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Marilyn Reda, Knoxville; and five grandchildren.
